So with the air pumps, the oxygenation of the water is not coming from the air being pumped into the water, it comes from the bubbles popping at the top and when little micro droplets land on the water they trap air. You can do same thing with a water pump as long as the water coming out disturbs the surface of the water and makes bubbles. I think this is why your big Thai got root rot, you had air pumping in, but with the leca there wasn't any space for bubbles to pop and land back in the water. If you look at most deep water culture set ups there is a lot of space between the basket holding the plants and the surface of the water. Little droplets landing on the roots also makes them grow like crazy, works really well on cuttings.
I added an air stone to my phalaenopsis orchid rooting in black tea and I've been able to regrow more roots in the last 2 months than in the entire 6 months is been in rehab.
I love how fast ,yet thoroughly you explain everything! Thx u. I believe I saw my plant that will be shipped to me any day now in your video!! I love all your plants , soils, fertilizers etc. I became a great plant parent because of you guys 😊. Thx again!!
PH..TDS/PPM… Know what you’re feeding your plants! Dial these in and you’ll go from a grower to a shower in no time 😉 🌱🌴. *Side note* I’ve personally been using LEAF LUX since release and for me it checks every box for what your plants need! It’s definitely made with years of growing experience!
They’re such important metrics. Tried to keep it simple in this vid, but keep your ph within range to uptake nutrients properly! And ppm tells you how much nutrients are in your water! IYKYK 🙌
The way I found you was those 3d printed biopots you sell that fit into the tall canning jar. They were a perfect way for me to try semi-hydro and I still use them to this day! Thanks for all the educational vids lately.
For most of my plants, I let my nutrient water reservoir dry out and water before my LECA does. It works so well. It’s easy and wow, my plants grow much faster and larger. Working out light requirements and adding nutrients to my water made a difference too. I didn’t worry about nutrients as much when I grew in soil. It wasn’t until I used supplements with LECA that I realized how beneficial it is to have control over them. I use full strength for every watering for every plant that has healthy roots but to each their own. It’s fun to experiment and test limits. Grateful you’re putting out content that can help make plant care more rewarding. This hobby is so great but I think people give up because they don’t like the end results. It’s like… there are so many options. Find what works. Something will.
I love to hear this!! I almost always water full strength too, it just can be dangerous to suggest I guess. Glad to hear you’re finding success with hydro nutrients and supplements. It really is a whole nother game, and the results become addicting to chase! Thanks for the kind words and always leaving insightful comments on the vids! 🙌
My ghost has such leaves , growing it in coco which i keep wet all the time. Its quite easy because it stays wet even up to 2 weeks (depends on temps, root size etc). Coco is , imo, easiest hydro you can do. No need for reservoirs, flushing, wicks, leca. Just coco, pot and water it when top goes dry.
Nice! The key with LECA is that it doesn’t stay wet all the time, that’s why it tends to grow faster than soil, coco, and other media that holds lots of water
@@prettyingreen If coco is treated as coco and not as soil (nutrients wise), results are +- same . Some plants grows a bit faster in coco for me and it applies mostly for plants with fine root system for which leca balls are too "big" to latch on. Basically all my plants in coco have "hairy" and more robust root system which allows those hair latch onto small coco parts. What surprised me a lot were anthuriums. They root and grow like crazy in coco coir. Its just mindblowing. Coco really needs to be fed properly since its easy to get nutrient lockout (cal, mag) with cheap brands. I have some plants in leca, some in coco (or coco-perlite) and i prefer coco because of maintenance, flushing etc. If you have a lot of plants and kids, every minute saved is godsend haha. However, as i said, growth rate is +- same for me once i learned how to treat coco. Most important part is to NEVER water coco with plain water and use nutrients which are made for coco especially.
Logically I know I my plants would be happier if I finally broke up with aroid mix and switched to leca… but my brain just can’t process not making a huge mess everytime it’s time to repot or add a new aroid pole into the mix 😂 there’s just something about putting your hands in soil occasionally that I can’t break up with yet. One day I’ll grow up and be the hydro queen that I know my plants want me to be 😂🤞
I knew it, the fertilizer isn't available in EU! I have tried to look for a one bottle semi hydro compatible fertilizer in EU but there is none. Kaylee Ellen's fertilizer hasn't either come available in the EU yet... I have a baby on the way so I'm nervous if I can find time to measure several solutions with a pipette and alter the pH every time I water!
Righto, here I am proud of my aroid mix and now seriously considering leca or pon... Oh, brother 😂❤ thanks for the info, also very funny way to get this out to us, love the humor involved
Do you think I could do leca in a terracotta pot, set in a little tray of water? My obsession with filthy aged terracotta is the only thing holding me back from trying leca. I feel like leca would allow me to water my plants in place which would be a dream come true for me cause I have like 250 plants and moving them to a sink or tray so I can flush water through the soil sucks.
I like how simple the process is for your nutrient solution, some of the other ones out there seem a bit overly complicated, any chance we might be able to get a big jug at some point?
Yup! All goes into the water. The hydrogen peroxide slowly releases oxygen into the water (h202), and that sterilizes the water from nasty stuff that causes root rot
@prettyingreen Just for clarification. Do you need to have (rain water /RO) or will tap water be okay? Will leaf lux help adjust my tap water? I just purchased a kit and would love some insight.
I dabble in hydroponics but I doubt your claim of faster plant growth. If that were true, wouldn't all professionals use hydroponics systems? But they don't most use soil. In my own experiments I've seen huge pH-shifts due to microbial activity.
You doubt the claim of hydroponics growing faster than soil? Professionals in Cannabis use hydroponics because it grows plants faster, producing higher yielding crops. Houseplant professionals don’t because these systems are prohibitively expensive. More air in the root zone, faster growth. Look up soil vs hydroponics time lapse here on UA-cam.
@@prettyingreen Hm I should have clarified I was talking about house plants only. I know that for example salad or tomatoes are often grown in hydroponics. Though veggies are very different than philodendron, my tomato plants show me as much. Don't get me wrong, I'm very interested in the subject and even have a sort of ebb and flow system going that works really well. But the hobbyist standard semi hydroponics setup so far doesn't work better than soil. I think the pH swings and lack of oxygen are problematic.
@@AcrylDame You would be surprised how well almost everything grows in hydro. Even nepenthes pitcher plants that aren't really supposed to get nutrients from their roots absolutely explode. I'm honestly surprised the house plant world hasn't picked up more things from the cannabis industry especially in regards to cloning techniques. I think people are catching on though, I might be completely off but I think the dutch grow house commercially in hydro and I think there's a couple Costa farms plants that come with baskets stuck on the roots, suggesting they started in hydro.
@@snatchclap I got my Nepenthes in a self watering pot and they grow very well. It wouldn't surprise me if they grow well in semi hydro as well. I might invest in a bigger ebb and flow system. The one I have running can only house small plants.

Great info about the pumps. Thanks
The little droplets in my opinion work better because it simulates the humid environment the roots are craving
