- He's the best player Robbie Fowler played with, a two-time UEFA Champions League winner, and for many Liverpool fans, the one that got away. Steve McManaman is the latest special guest on the Robbie Fowler Podcast as he lifts the lid on the nature of his controversial Anfield exit in 1999, becoming a Galactico at Real Madrid and why Nicholas Anelka failed at the Bernabeu.
Robbie and Steve also reminisce about the hilarious night they - and Robbie's painter/decorator cousin, Paul - partied the night away with Ronaldo (the real one!) in Madrid. Don't miss it!
The Robbie Fowler Podcast | In conversation with Steve McManaman | Episode 11 | In partnership with McDonald's UAE.

Macca was successful abroad because he is so bright and intelligent and open minded. Class player technically very good
A very bright and nice guy - And his wife is the same - how many British footballers wives are law graduates with multiple language abilities !
@@deethebee80thought that as well very impressive
Met Macca outside Anfield when I was about 8 years old (around 1997). Asked for his autograph but had left our pen in the car. He went to his car, got a pen and signed an autograph for me and chatted to my dad for around 10, minutes. Meant nothing to him (and probably nobody here!) but meant everything to us!
👍
I met him in 96. He gave so much time. Was great.
He's born an bread Bootle some good people down there. I know from experience. Macca grew up a Everton fan probably acted how many of everton players did when they seen kids outside the ground in the 80s. Remember football back then wasn't the commedity is now an players where just normal lads. Not like some of these players these days.
I met him once expecting a 30 seconds cant really b arsed chat. But he was top class. Signed my shirt. Chatted football for ten minutes. Cant fault him
its called class that and its great to be on the end of, nice one ;)
One of the most underrated players from that era. He was really really good.
Underrated?? ...
@@mafiosol_buenavida Yeah, what's your problem?
@@Giannis_V82 No problem. He's definitely not underrated though. Most people appreciate how good he was. Mind you, could have been even better with better injury luck and attitude. In my mind he underachieved ...
@@mafiosol_buenavida He is underrated though. Ask people who do they consider as the best players in the mid 90's and onwards in the PL and they don't even mention McManaman.
@@Giannis_V82 Then those people don't know football or his era dated before theirs. Added to that most people who do apply a rating have done so fairly i.e. he is hardly overrated as he is underrated - devastating in his day, could have done so much more considering his talent. Most people share that opinion. No question one of my most favourite players.
Been an avid supporter of Liverpool for 25 years and Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman were the reasons why.
plastic
Macca broke my heart when he left, he was the reason i started supporting Liverpool
Good player but abit extreme lol 😂 I wasn’t that bothered tbf
@@karlatkin01 i was only a kid at the time lol
@@karlatkin01 I'm sorry but he's one of Liverpool's best ever midfielders. When he left it was like the end of an era. The 90s basically. He was a great player with true world class ability. I mean he was wanted by Barcelona and Real Madrid. Says it all really and you say you weren't bothered. Stop lying to yourself buddy

I’m 31 and still have a figurine of him in my room with a ball at his feet mid turn. Really interesting to hear about the Madrid move, I was only eight or nine at the time so all I remember is the uproar, but it’s really nice to hear his side of the story and can totally understand why he felt he needed to leave. He’s got a good head on his shoulders, lovely to see the banter between him and Robbie
I remember being relieved when the Barca deal didn't happen and gutted when he left for Real. One of my favourite players in the 90s when I first started supporting Liverpool.
I dont think he sounds gutted to have left! And his commentary on liverpool games is none too complimentary either. This interview although opening up a new chapter on Steve, doesn't give any credit to liverpool.
@@patcronin9056 If you're talking about THIS season then my commentary wouldn't be too complimentary either. He had a wonderful career and it turned out to be the correct decision to leave for Madrid..Maybe he's a bit sour as to how it all transpired but..I for one don't begrudge him for leaving..I begrudge Suarez and Coutinho
CS From The US here; I think the same thing happened when
KEEGAN went to Europe, but a key "X Factor" is when 1 UK
Player ships out you can usher a Local Talent in, which
may have been an issue in the past, and is certainly a
Bigger Problem Today, though Liverpool seem to be working
in Academy Trained and / or outside local talent into the Club,
along w/ CHELSEA in tandem w/ making Trades / Transfers.
European & S. American Leagues, and to some extent, the US,
are heavily Local & develop players in an ongoing cycle,
which cuts out huge losses when Players join UK / European Clubs.
That makes for Solid National Teams, which England has,
but more than 75% of the EPL and Div 1 (EFL) has drifted from
the Homegrown concept; The Problem w/ the US is, even w/
Huge Numbers of Footballers, is,
A: being stuck a "Bubble" w/ Local Tournaments
CONACAF Cup Competitions, and MLS Players
from that Region tend to be
B: Tier 2/3 Players, resulting in
C: A "semi- "Retirement" League" for Top Int'l stars;
In Theory, compared to the US, the UK has a less steep hill
to climb to Repair things, vs the US, who need to solidify the
US Players w/ European Clubs by,
D: Making Bids to get into the Europa / UECL, and
Champions League to Expose Teams / players to Scouts,
Kids / Current players that may,
E: Like MLS Teams and want to play in the US earlier in their
careers vs considering / signing to a MLS Club in the
declining stage; A, B, C, & D doesn't literally help England
any more than it would aid the US, but figuratively
it could be beneficial, along w/ the prior points on "re-investing"
in Local UK Talent to break England's W. Cup Curse,
along w/ the rest of the UK; But as the guys said, Clubs
are so ingrained in Recruiting Int'l Talent to better their
teams, that the cycle may be impossible to break.
Macca & Robbie were like Batman & Robin..They used to, singlehandedly, destroy teams..Just ask Aston Villa, Newcastle, Arsenal etc.... What a ball carrier this dude was and his stamina levels were quite amazing.I was gutted when he left for Madrid (on a free transfer btw) but i understood (as all Liverpool fans did) that Macca had been there for 10+ yrs and he left with our blessing
I remember these guys back in 1996 versus Aston Villa at Anfield. Both Players destroyed Villa in 7 minutes. It was Heavy Metal Football and the Football I'm sure Jurgen Klopp now would be proud, watching.
@@LIVERNIL723 The problem with us in those days is that we were very good attacking but not so great defensively.. Thus the reason we didn't win the league... But we were very good to watch
@@simonforrest2522 exactly. Plus we would struggle against lower league teams especially away. Macca would be man marked and if they other players weren't on top form Liverpool struggled

I just love this show.
Great player and great to listen to, very intelligent analyst. Went hell for leather to learn the language when he moved to Real Madrid, unlike Bale who still can't speak Spanish after years in Spain, ignorance at its best.

Brilliant podcast and i love Macca always my favourite Liverpool player
I never had Sky so couldn’t watch any games but got a chance to see him live at Selhurst Park in 98. One of my favourite players. Was devastated when he left. Really good insight from him to know what really happened. Also him and Ally McCoist are the best co-commentators in football atm.I also agree with him about Haaland, Mbappe, big money transfers and high wages.
Another great pod... great stuff lads! YNWA!!
The 2 best players from Liverpool 90's. Best moments from these guys, fowlers 9min hat trick against arsenal (I was at that game) and Maccas goal against Celtic, run from own half. Belters. Top lads
If you were at the game, time stood still for you. Fowler scored a hat trick in 4mins 30 seconds
Impressive, intelligent man.
Steve well said I met you in Hale Barns cheshire in a DIY and I said I was pleased you better yourself at Real Madrid All the best Steve A very smart player and Father. You made the correct choice
The way he says "ing" at the end of words, just sounds so funny.
Thank You for these Podcasts. They have so far been fascinating and Insightful with many different subjects so far being visited and discussed in great lengths.
As a lifetime supporter, I request the subject of the 1995/96 (one of my all time favourite seasons) where we played at times some exceptional football but fell short of really having Silverware to show for. If there is one result I could change apart from May 1989 is the FA Cup Final 1996. I felt ultra disappointed after losing to Manchester United. It really had an effect on me back then.
Not sure if this podcasts been born out of the current circumstances but there's been some great insights into the engine room of football throughout lockdown on here and others. Cheers 👍🏻
Loved the Liverpool teams of the 1990's even though they were not very successful. However, they had that Britishness about them and my favourite players from the 1990'e were Rob Jones, Don Hutchinson and Robbie Fowler. I also liked Michael Owen a lot, but never forgave him for playing for Man. Utd. Mcmanaman was our best player from 1997 tp 1999 and never believed he would leave and when he left I lost a lot of respect for him. In the 1990's I used to dream about which players Liverpool should buy and I always wanted Thousand in midfield instead as we never had a proper holding midfielder since Mcmahon left. I also wanted Alan Stubbs as centre half as Mark Wright whom I liked was always injured and dreamed of him playing with Southgate. I also wanted a better keeper as I never liked either Grobelaar nor James. I think at the time I wanted Liverpool to sign Nigel Martyn. Another dream player I wanted Liverpool to sigh was Eion Jess from Aberdeen. However, my dream was for a return of Dalglish as manger especially after he won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1995. I did not want Houllier , but I was proven wrong and the man (RIP) was a great servant to the club and brought Liverpool up to the 21st century with his greatest signing being Hyppia a club legend.
I wonder how many times Robbie says ‘obviously’ during a whole podcast
My fav Mecca😍 lookin forward to more wonderful guests. Many thanks Robbie😬
I met Steve in Hale Barns in a DIY store called him an Evertonian playing for Liverpool He was shocked Then I said I was pleased you better yourself going to Real Madrid He smiled
Should of had more England caps instead of sticking Scholes on the left wing.
Stevie went from playing Thursday night matches to playing Wednesday/ Tuesday at Real:)
I lived in Spagna.and met javier clemente who told me,he was the best pure midfielder in europe at the time.
Co commentator gets to "what a hit son, what a hit, Take bow son, take a bow" "they think its all over it is now" Studio pundits are lower on the pecking order in a football sense,
The radio commentary to Shearer falling into sudden silence at the TAA corner vs Barca

He mentions Souness - ugh, Souness....ugh. Otherwise, I enjoyed this! Good podcast Robbie!
Superb insight to a club legend. Shame he left early, but can understand why.
Macca absolutely ripped us apart in the 95 league cup final
Never forget maccas goal at highbury one night to win game ,magic 30yarder into top corner...❤️
Could have been an international standard runner as well. So fit. Two CL titles at Madrid. Great career and huge final goal
Macca was an amazing player. He was so successful with real madrid meaning, he made the right moved
Just remember mate we’re u come from kirkdale
El Macca, an LFC great.
Slightly before my era but always heard the stories of how he left us for free and basically the narrative the club wanted to run. Hearing this You have to respect his decision and I hate it when clubs don't pay the local lads the money they deserve because they think they shouldn't care about the money. We don't want a similar situation with Trent...the kids won world best Right back TOTY awards and Is probably one of our lower paid players. Tie him and Curtis down and were laughing for a longgg time.
TTD is still just a kid hence why he's one of the lowest paid - he will be rewarded in time. Unquestionably one of the best right backs in the world. Why unbalance him with a sudden over-escalated monetary hike?
@@mafiosol_buenavida I agree mate but just wouldn't want to risk losing him. Suppose the club will know where his head is.
just wow. How badly Everton had to screw it up when they could not sign up an Evertonian kid that was a child of two massive Evertonian parents over Liverpool? :D
Great player, should have had alot more England caps, but seriously what's in them lever arch files???
He didn't sing You'll never Walk Alone anyway lol
Annoying how someone can leave Liverpool like he did and then comes back claiming to be Liverpool all over.
As much as I like these podcasts, does anybody else find it weird how often the hosts refer to the guests by name? Every single question has to involve a "Steve".
Yeah even worse in earlier ones he was calling everyone there nickname 😂😂 ‘scholsey’ ‘Stevie’ etc. he’s a pure weapon man that accent.

Hoddle made a mistake not selecting Steve in the 98 world cup. 1996 was a great team Venables knew his team and players
More than earned his place in the 98 squad, alas never delivered internationally, seemed to perform within himself.
Mc manaman never got the respect he deserved from England, for me he’s one of the the top 10 English players of all time better than beckham and scholes
How about comparing apples to apples, you picked three players who played different positions! And we all know why you picked two Manchester United players!

Dont get married if you want to go abroad and be successful Steve had a good wife
17:40 It pains me to say it but the premier league wasn't very strong in the 90s. Utd were the dominant force, but barely did anything in Europe until '99. It was a similar level to how Italy is now.
So it did seem like England had a ton of great strikers because they scored so many goals in the league, but Robbie Les Wright Cole etc. probably weren't quite the world class players that they seemed. Likely more Di Natale, Immobile and Insigne level.
Until I listened to this podcast I've got too admit that I have always held a massive gauge too awards steve, but there is always 2 sides too a story! Now I understand what went on, feel a bit of a c**t now....sorry steve.

If McManaman could finish he'd bag 20 goals every season. One of the worse finishers I've seen bar the odd exception naturally. Ran down his contract and fucked off meaning we couldn't get a much needed transfer fee. Good player but that's about it.
Macca defends his exit and pretends nobody thinks bad of him for how he left? That's delusional. McManaman was only our best player when he was number 17. When he was given his number 7 and the massive wage rise,he clearly took his foot off the gas and coasted those three seasons at Liverpool. He wasn't half the player he was. Watch his Celtic goal where he ran from London to score a worldie (I know he played number 7 then)....and the sliced shot from the dead ball line against Spartak Vladikavkaz and he was off the scale, the two goals and man of the match in the League Cup final against Bolton and the introduction of his step over properly.... but then he was given number 7....and he became an average top player.
I looked up to McManaman so so much and although he argued that he didn't cost anything and left for nothing, it was the drama week in, week out of seeing my favourite ever LFC player failing to agree terms and that disappointment and pressure building every week...plus the three average seasons as number 7 was more of a disappointment than signing a mega star and him flopping. McManaman was amazing when he was trying to prove himself and impress but the moment he got that number 7 shirt with the big contract, he changed and I saw a player that simply didn't want to be there and that disappointment McManaman will never understand.
Thankfully Patrick Berger came and soothed the wound...but it still smarts to this day Macca. Tell Mary and Frank Cody I said hi....it's been a long while, they might not even be with us anymore.
Yet madrid signed him🤔
