- Опубліковано 19 лис 2024
- The latest episode of the Robbie Fowler Podcast features a man who terrorised defences back in the 80s and 90s, first with Watford and then Liverpool and England. He wasn’t a bad rapper either. It’s John Barnes.
In a wide-ranging chat, Barnes opens up on the influence the late Graham Taylor had on his career, how his move to Anfield was a culture shock in more ways than one and what REALLY happened during his ill-fated eight months in charge of Celtic Football Club.
'Digger' also gives his verdict on Liverpool's current malaise and explains why Thiago Alcantara's arrival may have done more harm than good.
The Robbie Fowler Podcast | In conversation with John Barnes | Episode 9 | In partnership with McDonald's UAE.

John Barnes is the reason I began supporting Liverpool as a kid. Great great player.
Same here! Reason i'm a LFC supporter is because of John Barnes
He was my favourite player ever. Awesome, especially before the big injuries. His role at Newcastle showed what a baller he really was. Legend
I wanted to be john Barnes
Same here….I was a young kid in Jamaica during the late 80d and been a Liverpool fan since.
Man Utd fan here I’ve seen John since his Watford days and can’t praise him enough what a player he took so much racist abuse and handled it with such dignity and strength also I always knew how disciplined he was as he mentions regarding doing whats right for the team especially with England he alway tracked back and played in the system he never went off on glory runs left right and centre anyway this channel is superb as the player featured are from my era so dont care if it’s our biggest rivals channel there’s a lack of quality podcasts out there
John Barnes, a hero of mine, even now off the pitch. A humble intelligent gentleman with class and talent.
Well said
aye think he is misunderstood at times, but what a player. and a role model. bit before my time but no doubt he would be in the squad if he was younger and at same level of fitness. but he would probs have to play AM as our wingers are Olympic runners, reckon that would of worked with the false nine and him swopping about in games to fry defenders heads? jota mane salah being fluid and moving about too. would fry defenders heads that.
John 'Digger' Barnes..My childhood footballing hero and still remains so to this day..YNWA
Same mate
Ditto 👊
A great role model, on and off the pitch
He wouldn't have laced Beardslys boots
@Pocket Lawyer I bet Barnes couldnt put it over the bar from 2 yards instead of into an open net... 😮. It think the super fast and talented Sean Dundee was the GOAT!
As a left-footed kid supporting Liverpool in the late 80s and early 90s these two were absolute idols for me. Great to hear them talking about old times.
This is me too.. born in 78
John Barnes was my football idol when I was a teenager. My favourite player and he was such a special player, he could get past players, great football brain, fantastic pass and could score every type of goal. To me if he was playing, the team would win. He stood out and that's in a team with footballing geniuses.
The 1987-88 team was so good. McMahon, Houghton, Beardsley, Aldridge, Johnston, Barnes, just an amazing side.
Very true. I went to the FA Cup Final in 89.
Plus Ronnie Whelan, Steve Nicol, Alan Hansen
We literally had goals from everywhere... Craig Johnston with those late runs from MF..Lol..Good old days
It certainley was, it was a major blunder by Souness to get rid of a lot of those players, Staunton, Whelan and Gary Gillespie, with the youngsters waiting in the wings they would have guided those players.
Greatest Liverpool side in my opinion. Bruce between the sticks, Stevie Nicol, Hansen at the back, Whelan, Houghton and McMahon busy in midfield, Aldo and Beardsley up top....... but the best was Digger Barnes. Legend. That team would have won the European cup for sure. Only Kenny and Stevie are above Barnesy.
I was thinking to myself last week after watching the Ian Rush podcast wouldn't it be great to hear from John Barnes! What a player John was too...he has them skills alright
John Barnes was my icon here in Cork Ireland. I played left wing for primary school and I used to pretend to be John Barnes. What a legend and what a player.
Brilliant, Fantastic Memories of LFC in the late 80s and 90s, King Kenny, Mr Moran, Mr Evens running ANFIELD and winning everything, what a Team this was, We Thank The King for giving us John Barnes, defo The Kings' greatest signing! YNWA John!
Love this man. What a player. Such a shame his prime years were when Liverpool couldn’t compete in Europe.
Absolutely..Our front 3 would have torn Europe up imo
@@simonforrest2522 Yes, the european ban had a major impact on the club, and was a factor in Liverpools gradual decline.
@@DavidSmith-fs5qj True, shame LFC fans never accept the impact their behaviour had on English football.
Maggie thatcher an uefa were dead set on getting English clubs banned from Europe due to every English club having troubles in Europe and unless you were there don’t chat shit about people’s actions a wall collapsed in a shit hole of a ground that was not fit to stage a game bent uefa again no one got shot they ran an nocked a wall down yet young lads got man slaughter charges an they never threw a punch
@@davidhigham6117 let’s accept English fans behaviour was totally unacceptable in those days. Alas, it was one of the reasons Hillsborough happened. There would have been no need for pens in stadia had there been no trouble previously. It was those pens that killed us
Shows how money completely runs football, John Barnes always has been one of the more knowledgable men in football, but doesn’t have the important ingredient , the backing. Top man John Barnes.
The best player I personally have ever seen as a 41 year old Liverpool fan !!
Spot on analysis by Barnes of Liverpool's difficulties this season. He has more understanding than most the so called pundits inflicted on us by the media.
Wish you were managing a club, your understanding of what it takes, your optimism and your logical way of thinking are infectious and I'm sure there are many clubs that could use catching this kind of infection.
the legend! the reason i started watching football. still my hero to this day!! John Barnes, wa gwaan brother
Racist!!
Would like to see some interviews with ex players you rarely see interviewed like Jimmy Case, Mike Hooper, Gary Gillespie, Barry Venison, Mark Walters, David Johnson, Joey Jones, Sammy Lee, Kevin MacDonald, Steve McMahon, Rob Jones, Steve Finnan, Peter Beardsley, Paul Stewart, Dean Saunders, Jari Litmanen, Terry Mac, Lawrenson, Hanson, etc.. Cheers.
Respect to John Barnes. He could do it slow, or fast, but he could get to the line. He did it at the right time. You could catch him if you can, but he was the England man.
This man talks so much sense. I cannot believe that he isn't more prominent in broadcasting or management.
Barnesy proper Gent, classy, a good man. I remember 4 years old during 1990, in the Garden playing footy with Dad, he was Gazza and I'd be Bansey. Thanks for the golden memories John and cheers Robbie for bringing him on. A real legend,
Barnes my Favourite Liverpool player ever. He was my hero as a kid. What a player he was. Great memories. Thanks John Digger Barnes
I have so many favourite,s, but Barnes is certainly one of them...
this is the one I've been waiting for, my hero used to watch him at Watford, then watched him at Liverpool
Barnsey's a legend!! Thanks guys - great podcast, keep 'em coming!!!
Really open, insightful and interesting interview. Very sad that Barnesy never given the chance to contribute more at managerial level and I think we all know why :(
Why?
I remember going to Anfield and watching John Barmes play as a teenager. I had watched Dalglish play when I was a kid too. And John was on a par skill wise with Kenny. That's the best compliment I can give to Digger.
Quite a compliment too mate
Barnes is better than Dalglish skill wise what a brain and so silky
John barnes should have a statue at Anfield simply majestic matches Arsenals Henry!!
John Barnes was an amazing player, handled some racist abuse with complete strength and dignity but unfortunately didn’t do so well as a manager.
I think Kenny was another level.
Boss stream Robbie.
Fantastic insight from the Big Man. Best wishes Digger.
96 ❤ YNWA
As a left footed left winger growing up in Manchester in the 80's I was desperate for United to sign Barnsey, he oozed class and was so exciting to watch at Watford and I was gutted when he signed for Liverpool! He was untouchable in his first few years at Liverpool and until he got that horrible injury and would be worth millions in today's market!
Same here. United should have signed him. If we hadn’t let Beardsley go in the early 80’s and signed Barnes, how earlier would we have won the league?? That Liverpool team in 87/88 was unbelievable. They won the league by 9 points but they were playing football that was out of this world.
My childhood hero...
What a legend.. John Barnes.. legendary player!
The reason I wore Diadora boots...
Had the pleasure of meeting john barnes a true lfc legend, the main reason why i supported liverpool as a kid. Great interview.
Wonderful stuff from John . Great player , great man, very interesting to hear him talking about football. Talks almost as good a game as he played! Since Jimmy Greaves, and before Stevie G , my all time favourite player. I still like watch clips of him playing.
JB is spot on about the press in Scotland 👍 it's pretty common knowledge they've always had an anti celtic/Irish Catholic (Pro-Rangers) agenda and the propaganda spreads to the fans to cause unrest. John experienced it first hand back in the day and Neil Lennon has experienced it in the past few months more than any other manager in Scottish football history.. No coincidence he's an Irish Catholic....
Everyone likes John Barnes, even Man U supporters!
Very true mate, I'm a Manc United fan and as well as admiring him for his football ability I think he's very interesting to listen too on other subjects.
Man United fan confirming this statement
Always loved Barnes
John. Barnes proper legendary footballer. 🍻🍻
Robbie. Fowler too. 🍻🍻
Absolutely!!
Brilliant analysis by Barnes on our current problems and being stuck between 2 ways of playing!
I thought the exact same thing too... I think the reason may be because Klopp was unable to pursue our evolution fully due to the god awful crisis of injury..I still think that's the overall plan..To become a more possession based team but with the ability to switch modes as we see fit..But , as we know, we need our best players available this to work
Amazing player. shame we wasn't in Europe to play that Milan side. Great show 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
JOHN BARNES a great person, human being , player, manager, Press are shite
An incredibly skillful and dynamic player who could run rings around an opposition. Hated the bugger, but only because he didn't play in my team. From a Man Utd supporter..
Love this podcast man, lockdown been shit this time and all these have been great. Hope you can carry this on for a long time.
Great podcast John Barnes was a fantastic player for Liverpool
Digger
What a man !!
You'll never walk alone
My idol growing up. 1988/89/90 seasons he was head and shoulders above everyone. Reminded me of how Henry made professional players look like non league players, he was in the same category. He was a delight to watch. He could have peeled the banana thrown at him with his left foot in that infamous incident.
Great interviews the stories are brilliant John Barnes in his prime was superb 👍 LFC
Barnes is a very engaging character and strong personality. Great to listen to.
There is only one john barnes a true Lfc legend magic number 10 what a top bloke YNWA🔥96🔥
John Barnes. Favourite player of all time.
I could literally listen to him all day.
Im a united fan but have to give credit where its due, robbie n john barnes both class act's.
Two of my favourite players and a great episode 👍🏾
The attitude "oh, it's john barnes, we should win" was not one the fans had at celtic.
It was putely john barnes' attitude.
His tome at celtic was indeed shirt but it was characterised by incompetence, pretentiousness and narcissism on his part. He was a rookie coach with no qualifications for the job appointed on the sole basis of nepotism from dalglish.
I remember at tynecastle barnes persisted with his 4-2-2-2 system he saw brazil even though it was not working. The players themselves changed it and turned around the game. Barnes lost the dressing room and fans because he was not a good manager, which calls fir more than soundbites.
With barnes gone, martin o'neill came in and won the treble.
"If i go to a club, i would have to be number one". With his recird thos attitude shows why he failed at cektic. He is a man convinced of his own genius, but a legend only in his own lunchtime.
He was a great player, bit doed not have any if the attrubutrs to be a good manager, in attitude, temperament, knowlege, people skills or seeing the big picture.
It is little wonder he has not made it as a manager anywhere.
John Barnes was a lot better than Sadio Mane.
That's not even a debate
Barnes was better than most
😂 😂 😂 no shit Sherlock
The Man The Myth The Legend! Hero of The Kop, Legend of ANFIELD! John Barnes LFC Forever YNWA!
A disgrace that he did not get more chances at management in England. Highly intelligent and breaths football.
John Barnes needs to do punditry. Great insights.
i agree but he is way too honest and opinionated for the mainstream media , look back at what he says about racism in football , the FA and media like to half arse racism and barnes points out their hypocrisy
Karanka Out , Barnes in. Wouldn't do any worse in our situation. Robbie's right, Barnes should still be involved in football, this podcast just shows what a great man he is too!
Barnes you legend 🙌
He is a great man as well as player. Love to the guy.
Between 87 an 89 superb player!!
Probably the best player in the world between 1987-89.
Thanks Robbie....really enjoying these. #10 Barnes one of the best around. Respect 🇧🇧
43:50 JB on his typically shocking treatment by the celtic fans and board.
Your welcome bhoys
One of the best football flags ever.
“At least Barnes can rap”
Yup, what they didn't mention was he'd won the Manager of the Month award the week before.
Players at Celtic didn't rate Barnes, and martin o Neill was being lined up,, and looking back what great decision that was,,,, if he was good maneger he would calmed situation and got viduka to play second half,, players didn't rate him in training or his man manement style,,
And I'm a Liverpool fan who loves Barnes the player,,,
@@littlebrayutd It was probably to do with what he said in the interview about players always going along with the manager if they can see that the board are behind the manager, but readily kicking up a fuss over anything if they sense that the board aren't fully behind the manager. And, as you said, Martin O'Neill was already being lined up and already had the backing of the board in advance.
Let's have it!
It's hard listening to Barnes because he speaks so fast....he speaks as fast as he used to run down the wing....what a player he was. I remember watching him when I was 10 years old at Anfield against Southampton.....brilliant.
It really is not.
@@eightiesmusic1984 it really is
@@tubbybeaver4471 Just pay attention. Full stop at the end of a sentence, should not be too difficult either.
@@eightiesmusic1984 I didn't say I didn't understand him, I said it's hard to listen to him because of the speed he talks at....it's not a difficult concept....
Ooh score...you're killing me on punctuation ...yaaaawwwwwwnnn
@@tubbybeaver4471 Ridiculous response. Grow up. It is not hard to listen to John Barnes. Nonsensical assertion.
These are brilliant - Thank you so much.
Just landed at this Podcast what a treat 👌
Great Podcast 🏆 Watched all of them
Very interesting comment from Barnes regards Graham Taylor.. Enlightening...
I must add, the managers and coaches back then sounded great, players as well as managers seemed to take the piss a lot yet still do great quality work.
Paul Ince hiding rancid fish under the seating of his teammates' cars.
By God digger was 💯 percent accurate about his analysis of Liverpool s style and what was required going forward ,as time has proven.. Barnes was a brilliant player so exciting and creative
I wish I owned a club, Digger would be my first port of call for the gaffers job. 😆 Complete trust & backing, if we lose 20 on the spin I'd back him to get us out the sh*t 😆
Legend
Who is digger?
Digger was John Barnes's nickname at Liverpool
@@darrenwatson3726 hi Darren back in the day there was an American tv series called Dallas
One of the main characters was Willard Barnes, he was working in the oil fields, because of his ability to sniff out the oil reserves he became known as (digger Barnes) ie, digging for oil, that’s where John Barnes got his nickname
John Barnes the best Liverpool player world class England should have built the team around him. He was Englands Maradona He had the skill and brain to play at the highest level
Magic player.
Great interview and insight from a Marvelous footballer...Was given a rough deal at Celtic for sure.
Absolutely unbelievable he hit the nail on the head character focus on how the play acts if his attitude is right he's going to be good barnes is great
The best LFC player I've ever seen in my lifetime.
😂😂😂
John Barnes is class man great guy
Excellent podcast. Nice work 👍
Brilliant episode
Unbelievably, England today still has a ''quality player/flair football'' problem even though England has quality players. As John and Robbie eluded, this problem happened then, and it still continues.
Regarding Liverpool in the 1980s, that is one of the all time great teams in the game's history, the football was superb.
These podcasts are legendary
My favourite player of all time. Would pretend to be him on the playground in the school days
Nice to see John without DVDs behind him named Cumhungry Guzzle Girls XXIX and Soapy Tatwink Express XVII, like the ones he had behind him on Sky Sports News. That really put me off John, and he'd been my idol since he masterminded Celtic to a 3-1 defeat at home to a part-time Highland XI and mapped out Tranmere's route to the FA Cup Preliminary Qualifying Round. (In all seriousness, Barnes at Watford and early Liverpool - just wow)
The best Liverpool team we ever had. Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton, Aldridge and the list goes on. 🤗🤗
My hero of LFC started with Barnes, then God, the Gerrard... all brilliant men, humble, intelligence and generous in every sense
Barnes majestic in the ‘wing back‘ chair there la. ✨💫
John Barnes what a legend
Barnes was the rolls royce on the left, glided past defenders with apparent ease.
I agreed with Rodney Marsh's view on Robbie. If only he wore boots in his actual size 🙃
Has the joey Barton interview been removed I was half way through. what happened?
He probably said something stupid as usual. Robbie didn't wanna get sued. Must be the Strandel incident.
listen to the podcast version
Why have all other vids on channel gone private?
John Barnes; The first player I've ever seen to wear tights in English football.
And gloves!!
I remember when Barnes bought Raphael "Schite" for 5 million of the strength of a vhs tape demo.
😂😂😂
Need to see one of these with Big Jan
john barnes is best ive seen on this show by a mile, celtic were idiots to sack such a quick guy
John Barnes 900k from Watford, bargain nowadays lol.
First player to get 10k a week and caused outrage at time
@@richardkelbie5362 Boy was he worth it..He's the main reason i fell in love with Liverpool tbh
Shit at Celtic
Out of his depth
Thought his reputation would get him through
DISASTER
My all time GOAT 🇯🇲
Best player I’ve seen live
Racism was prevalent In the 90s still. Remembering a game at Old Trafford where a black player tackled digger Barnes, and the United player got racially abused by my mate.. think that was first time I realised how I had to rethink my 80s upbringing
On the wirral. Best place to be. Was lucky enough to interview Bruce, Roy and Phil. Oh as well as Aldo.
He says at the end he started in management in 1999 and has had 1 year out of 21 working, yet how many chances has Steve Bruce been given to show that he doesn't do much at a club?Strange.
100% with you Asad Barsney was my hero no one better
He’s hyper active and wants everything now not a quality of a great manager but a great player Robbie must be so respected in the football world just to get these guys on haven’t checked if he’s had Ferguson on yet if not hope he does
Robbie Fowler, the Rocky Balboa of Football!
Goodness, this is so educational :-)
