If you have a desktop, get a hard drive swap tray. I use one that lets you put three drives in the space of tho front 5.25 slots. Whenever you want to try something new, slide out your windows drive and slide in a blank one. One hint place your data on a separate drive so you have access to it on any operating system you a playing with.

I have an Icy Dock Flex Trio that I use for booting multiple OSes, and it’s funny that you mentioned the separate HHD for data. I bought an 18TB for this purpose, and one of my drives that I imaged from a laptop is walled off from it. I think that the laptop SSD that was imaged still has the laptop chipset instead of installing generic desktop chipset drivers with Windows Update.

Yes mate that is just what I have in my older main desktop running Windows 11 Pro unsupported hardware, and I do have another SSD installed in another tray with Windows 10 Pro on it for the eventual loss of compatibility that Microsoft will set in place. All I need to do is simply swap the data and power leads to the drive I am wanting to update and access that OS etc etc.
I have two ssd drives in my machine, one has win 10, and the other linux mint. Just select boot options on startup.

My solution to dual booting was to build a Linux PC as well as a Windows PC. That way I have options if one of them fails. I have been using Linux again after drifting away from it for a few years. I am very impressed at how well it works now. It is much easier to use. Except for a couple of games and programs I prefer using my Linux PC now even though my Windows PC is more powerful. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for this info. With windows stopping support for win10 in 2025, and my rather new computer not able to run Win11 , I have a sour taste towards windows now. Forcing me to replace my motherboard just to run 11. Nope
It is always better before installing Linux to choose for try to see whether everything works like your wifi, sound etc. Saves a lot of trouble afterwards. If some things do not work and too complicated to solve i do not install and look further.
Highly recommend to use individual drive for each system and choose while booting (p.s. watching this video in a Debian system)

As I already have a dual-boot setup (W10 / Linux Mint) I tried this approach of using rEFInd on my Dell laptop to make the boot menu look a bit more user-friendly that the standard grub. However, I could only get it to work if I disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS setup. It certainly didn't work straight away as your video suggests. I'm a little unsure as to how much reliance to put on Secure Boot to be honest. It seems like a good idea in principle but in practice just a way of having Microsoft act as a gatekeeper. I'd love to know what others think about this.
in my experience every time a large company has talked about security, it's about securing control over their client base rater that actually helping the client be safe... i wouldn't trust them if i was you.
For my dual boot setup I just put Win11on one SSD and Linux Mint on another SSD inside the same PC and when I want to use either one I just restart and hit F8 for the boot menu and then choose which one I want .... Very simple and easy.
I ditched windows and bought a new desktop PC without an OS and put Ubuntu on it. I first tried to install Linux Mint XFCE but all I got was a green screen so paid out £80 to have it reset and Ubuntu on the PC. It's the best decision I ever made ditching windows on one desktop and will be ditching Windows on the main desktop when the SSD breaks.

Linux does not spy on you. Saying that Linux also has telemetry is not accurate. You just chose ubuntu which is getting closer and closer to being windows in that aspect. Other distros will not do this. Maybe Zorin would have been a better option for this video or Linux Mint.

Great informative video (as usual.) However, I have been checking out WSL, and it seems like a great idea. Windows and Linux running side by side, no worries about choosing an OS at start up. No worries about virtual machines, partitions... they just work together. My biggest concern though is if it's too good to be true. I have watched several videos on the subject with the grain of salt that these folks are experts on the subject, and their expertise far exceeds mine, and therefore I may not achieve desired results.

If you dual boot with dual drives, how do you know which drive has the boot loader??? Thx for sharing/helping I'm thinking of installing Win 10 on one of the win 7 dual boot drives, but am afraid I might kill the boot loader and lose everything...

I see what I can do, pretty easy to use Linux
If your printer is on when you install Linux, 95% of the time it will automatically install it.
I offer the following remarks ,NOT as a criticism of Brian's video.
1. Back up data (or image system) before doing this.
2. Dual booting is OK until Windows changes something on an update. If you don't understand how to fix boot loaders, dual boot is not advised for newbies. While it works, it is fine, however....
3. Highly recommend using a virtual machine or a separate spare PC. OR swap out the hard drive (SSD/M.2 drive) and clean install Linux.
4. @5 min harvesting data - an Ubuntuism, not a general request. Mint and MX don't ask this.

Great video last time I did this with you I could not get back into windows just kept booting into Linux so ended up wiping hard drive and started again couldn't get used to it but thinking might give it a go again thanks

@Britech. Never, and I mean never, run graphical applications ( they run in user mode ) as root. Do not edit root files with sudo in a graphical application, like a text editor, as shown in your video ( /boot ). This is bad practice and a security risk. DO NOT teach people to do this. ONLY edit root config files in the terminal using either nano or vim. However, editing user configuration files ( in /home ) is perfectly fine and safe in a graphical text editor as you do not need /root permissions to do this.
On Linux Mint and Debian which I use you can't edit any system files unless you open them as root. You have to enable the root account to do this. You should also create a system restore point with Timeshif before you do it. So if anything goes wrong you can restore your computer back again.
Ubuntu or Mint Cinnamon. That's the big cuestion? I think i'll go for Cinnamon. What do you all think of that??
Or just have a second SSD with Linux installed and change the boot drive every time. It's a hassle but it is safe.

Is this still working for you? I've done a lot of research, and can't find a good answer about if a dual-drive, dual boot system is actually stable long term using this method. Some people online say it's unstable, I would imagine it's safe if you're careful as you described.

Still on Win 10, and it works fine for now. Now, I have two more computers with Linux. The problem I have is HP bios. Whatever I do, HP bios doesn't allow me to turn on Virtualisation. Some advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

If I decide to do this I shall go Linux Mint Cinnamon as I have tried that many times before. Just one question is how do I remove the Linux and/or the virtual machine setup should I not want it anymore??

Hey im having issues with my pc, it keeps turning on and off by itself. If its connected and the power switch is on it'll just turn on and off and then keep doing that then it'll work for a bit then shut off. Can you pls help

Can anyone please help me. I need to password protect a new Crucial X9 Pro external HD. It has hardware encryption built in. But no password options. Running win 10 Home. Yes, I know.. Still, hoping some kind soul can help me password protect this device. Bit Locker is not an option on Windows 10 Home.
Do not dual boot win and Lin. Bad Idea. Use two separate boot partitions and two separate HDDs. That is the best way to do it. Then win can't interfere with Lin.
how severe are the risks? i really want to dual boot but i'm on a laptop and only have one ssd
@@aims__8785 Your SSD doesn't come close to having enough storage capacity to do anything really useful. If you let Linux use the windows boot partition, when a major update is done on windows, windows may cause the Linux OS to become unbootable until you fix it and you will spend time figuring out how to fix it.

@@QuikRay I actually have a pcie slot which is being used by an 16gb intel optane ssd which came with my laptop. And after booting up a live os of linux mint, it says to install it i will have to disable the optane technology. If i can't even use the optane ssd with linux i might as well remove that ssd and replace it with a high storage nvme and then i will be able to dual drive dual boot.

refind does not work on older generic bios booting I tried it it's a fail !!!
