    Hill End NSW is one of my most favourite places in Australia & well worth visiting if you enjoy stepping back in time to enjoy the quiet life 👍👍

    Hello, I just wanted you to know that I found this video very interesting. I actually live at Rylstone and I go past Hill End on my way to Bathurst but I've never actually stopped there to visit however I am going to do so in the near future thanks to your video. Your channel just came up randomly, and I now plan to watch some other ones and subscribe. Your dog Max is adorable and reminds me of my own border collie, Clancy, who now resides over the rainbow bridge! Take care now, and thank you!

      Hi, Thanks for the supportive comments. We have been to Hill End many times over the years (we live in Bathurst) and always find something new to see. I'm sure you will enjoy your visit(s). Max is a pretty chilled fellow but can be naughty when you least expect it. My next videos will be the Darling River Run and the Flinders Ranges, I hope you will enjoy them. Thanks for watching.

    A mate used to own a shack near the campground. His father bought it in the fifties of an old miner in the pub. We spent many a holiday there as kids. One day back in the early 90s, we arrived at the Hill end Hilton late in the evening to find the locks had been cut off and replaced by (we found out later) npws.
    We cut it off and went about our weekend away with the boys.
    We had fixed up the Hilton very well. Wet back oven , gas fridge, new veranda . We used to pick the plums as kids from the trees beside the Hilton and make sauces. It was a yearly thing we did with my mates Dad.
    Npws took it!

    I stayed in that pub about 40 years ago ... I remember getting horribly drunk, One thing I was told by a local, don't go walking around at night (drunk or sober) because there were still many old open mineshfts all over the area waiting for you to fall into !

    Hill End was a huge city during the Gold rush, one of the largest in the country. For some reason, much of the history has been covered up.

    I will go and live there any day of the week, who can I contact to go and have a look? We toured the far west of Queensland 16 years ago and there were a few ghost towns, the buildings were straight out of British Colonial Style, the Hotels were amazing, some of them doors open full of dust with bottles still on the shelves, even the bar stools, beautiful stained glass with counters that looks like a few millionaires spend a lot of time in there with the hoypeloy on the verandas outside. And there were usually about 3 to 4 hotels in a town, I can imagine the miners spending all their money on Drink and fast women, and the family back in Brisbane were waiting for the riches that never came until they get the telegram , "Mr james Smith died the way he lived, of consumption and was laid to rest in the Baptist Cometary of St Johns" lol!

      The town is open like any other town and comes under Bathurst Regional Council, you can contact the Bathurst information centre for more info- 1800 681 000, www.bathurstregion.com.au/ A lot of the buildings are owned and maintained by National Parks and some of the private ones come up for sale now and then. Thanks for watching, Part 2 comes out on Sunday evening.

    My uncle used to live in Hillend he also used to work for national parks, part of his job was to shoot the goats until the animal welfare kicked up a stink and it had to stop. He use to live in one of the little welsh minners cottage and he had a three threes pickle jar full gold to hold the door open.

    Where is the photo of the Welcome Stranger, lth largest nugget ever found ?

    • @paulwashere.2121
      @paulwashere.2121  2 місяці тому

      The Welcome Stranger Nugget was found in Dunolly, Victoria not Hill End. You are thinking of the Holtermann nugget which weighed in at 285kg.

    • @lookupfromdownunder5218
      @lookupfromdownunder5218 2 місяці тому +1

      @paulwashere.2121 I am talking about the life sized photo of the nugget,that was almost as tall as its discoverer. The photo was signed by all of the witnesses. I stood next to the original photo that was enlarged by the Herald for posterity. It is probably in a private NPAW collection now. I was 10 years old then, I am 70 now.
