I used a fanny pack on my missions trips with my church. It was great to have! I kept a small first aid kit, pen, notebook, cash, credit card, ID and passport. I took it everywhere. It was much easier than carrying a purse or backpack. I do keep it in the front because anyone can come up behind you and access the pockets.
I don't know why people would have a problem with a 'fanny pack' we call them 'bum bags' here. I use mine for hunting all of the time it's the perfect way to carry stuff because a backpack means my shoulder is not clear for the stock of my rifle or shotgun.
One of the best ways to collect water is to tie a plastic bag around medium size leaves. But you have to collect it before the sun gets too high, because that will evaporate. Leaves precipitate water which is what we are collcting here. We have been doing this for ages in the arid regions of Rajasthan that has little vegetation. Its called Transpiration. Very very handy. You will need 10-20 plastic bags per person (depending on type of trees, amount of humidity, season etc)
Walmart sells a comparable pack made by "Outdoor Products" of decent quality and similar size for $6.97. They can be found in the camping section. I have used them for years for the same purpose and CCW, and they have held up well for the money.
If nothing else this reminded me to put one of my emergency blankets into my new pouch lol. As far as filters you should stick to the sawyer that bag goes with, 100,000 gallons vs the 30 you said that frontier one does. Stay well friends.
Nothing wrong with a "fanny-pack". I carry my extended first aid kit in one. If sitting in a vehicle or carrying a backpack, i just twist it so its on the front. Even works when i compliment my backpack with an old Swedish combat harness i added extra magazine pouches and a Blackhawk hatchet too.
You can also carry it 'messenger bag' style instead of around your waist, which I do since I bike around a lot. This is where you sling it over one shoulder and down across your body. The pack can be on your side, your back, or your front. But this way, those who are 'fanny pack' conscious and fear of not looking cool (even though there's nothing wrong with that and I do carry it like a fanny pack), can look cool.
I have a survival kit in a fanny pack.. so easy to wear for walking in the woods I have a lot more packed in mine... Including expanded first aid kit with bleed stopper and larger bandages and gauze I could not believe the amount of supplies I could stuff into this little fanny pack I tried to keep everything at a minimum weight I do have one of those filter straws and Water purification tablets and a water bag..
The inclusion of the space blanket is top tier. A lot of kits, that you can buy, don’t include a shelter. The elements are the first, and most dangerous, concerns. Not everybody knows what a ferro rod is or how to use a compass (might not know where you need to go) but a 5 year old would know how to wrap themselves in a blanket. It’s the biggest difference maker when it comes to survival.
I was putting a bag together for spring bike riding and now it's going to be a fanny pack instead. I'm going to add a patch kit to it and my mini bike pump to go with the cheap plastic rain poncho. Last year I got caught in at least three 50°F downpours/thunderstorms out of nowhere and nothing was open because of the pandemic. The water carrier is a great idea too, since I have rescued at least one other bicyclist who had no water, no container and a flat tire and no tools biking on a national trail! Poor guy.
@@12345678927164 Unfortunately they have drawbacks they aren't is easily found they're a little on the big side the little ones might be okay but you have to worry about gas they do have a tendency to fart and they have teeth at the other end clean skinning a baby bear does have a little bit of ethical dilemma I'm not worried about that much but it is still hard to come by
Thank you and another great video. I do agree about moving it around to your back instead of carrying it on the front but remember if you fall backwards you can injury your back. I understand that a backpack can do the same but that is smaller and in one small area.
I have a very similar setup in a Maxpedition pouch. However, I also include a 1200 calorie Mainstay bar for some food. Instead of a few bandages, I put a Bratpacker Gear ultralite first aid kit, added a needle with some nylon thread and a fresnel lens. As much as anything the fresnel is redundancy for my eyeglasses, so I have some ability to read if my glasses are lost or broken. Otherwise, the whole pouch is covenient enough to go into a back pack or pants cargo pocket.
My coworkers often carry a fannypack with their regular everyday items in it, i.e. wallet, keys, phone cable, etc. Just so they're not weighing down their pockets. They usually have it in a vehicle, not on them. More like a grab & go pouch. I'd add some BZK wound wipes for those bandaids, maybe a mask, hand sanitizer & a pair of latex gloves.
I used a fanny pack for years while skiing. It did not interfere with the physical act of skiing, downhill or cross country. It carried my lunch, water bottle, and first aid kit.
It never hurts to have that one item you didn't think of. I carry most of these items in my EDC bag, but I do like that little compass he attached to the zipper pull.

Excellent video! I have a kit very much like that I take on day hikes. I've started packing a mylar poncho instead of the blankets, though. They'll do everything the blankets will do, but also make it much more convenient and effective if you need the additional warmth, but need to stay on the move at the same time (like you're fighting off hypothermia while still trying to make it out of the woods and back to your vehicle). I also include one of those cheap clear plastic ponchos in case someone else is with me and we both need protection from the weather while we keep moving (a lesson learned because I always brought my jacket when we went out, but my wife never did, so I would give her my jacket and then I'd be cold - so now I bring TWO jackets). ;-) If you decide you have to hunker down for the night, you can make a small emergency shelter and line the back of it with the reflective poncho, then seal the front using the clear poncho as a door. That will block most of the wind (much more quickly and effectively than piling up tons of debris), but the clear poncho still allows the radiant heat of a fire built in front of your shelter to reach you (which reflects off the shiny poncho behind you as well) - it's like an emergency hot tent.
This video motivated me to find my Vanguard waist pack as I buried it in a pile of backpacks in my attic. Sootch, you inspired me to put together another survival kit (fifth in last two weeks). I described The Pioneer by Vanguard in a previous comment. A couple of other features I had forgotten about is (1) the naugahyde bottom hides an attached bright orange rain cover and a (2) bungee cord on top to store a layer of clothing or should you remove your outer layer like a rain jacket. I also had attached a OneTigris EDC pouch on the left hip molles. On the right hip molles I clipped a HAWG hoster I had custom made with carbon fiber and a UTICLIP which stabilizes the holster for a quick draw. A double magazine pouch is attached to the waist strap behind the holster.
I have 2 or 3 head lamps. Have one with my solar charger because that head lamp is rechargeable from walmart. And one in my small belt bag with fire starting/ first aid kit. The recharger and light is in a pouch of it's own molled to my larger first aid kit. And I keep a headlamp in my Large Alice Rick as well. So I have a headlamp wherever I need it and won't forget the headlamp, no matter what gear I have.

I use the exact same Helikon bag as my edc for my trips and excursions into the woods. It is much more capacious than it seems. Made of Cordura. There is a hole on the back for mounting this pocket on a regular belt. I use the second such bag as IFAK in the shooting range.
Coming off of carpal tunnel on my wrist I would put a one handed fire starter in there. You have to assume a possible injury situation. I keep a small thumb lite attached to outside of bag.
I have carpal tunnel as well. One product I would love to try is the Grayl water filter, but I can see it potentially aggravating my wrists with its operation.
I still use a fanny pack in the warmer months. When I hike, I always take it with me, even if I'm carrying my sling bag. Ease of access. I've also added small pouches and phone cases to the belt. Great video as always!
Those mylar blankets are good for signaling (they have been seen by rescue aircraft and have saved lives ) and in making Mors Kochansk typei supershelters but they are not going to keep you very warm for a prolonged period in frigid temperatures. Take one into a very cold situation and try it out for several hours ( or until you get cold) before you stake your life on it in an emergency situation. There are some mylar bivvies that are quite compact that are reviewed elsewhere on UA-cam that might be better but they have condensation issues. If you have a clear drop cloth, cordage, little duct tape and one of those emergency blankets you can build a supershelter that combined with an external fire might actually keep you alive.
My waist pack is made on a padded belt like on a hiking pack . I can attach the bottom of a back pack to it so the packs weight will rest on the top of the waist pack which puts the load on my hips and relieves the weight off my shoulders. The fanny / waist type bag I use is made by Cabela's for fishing . I can also add suspenders to it if needed for use without a backpack . . A good thing is that I can add two 1 quart military canteens , 2 - 1 pint double walled metal bottles ( for hot coffee / ice ) and a pistol and a knife with no problems . I know this video is about going mini . I use this set up mainly for deer hunting . Oh , the gun I carry on is a snub nose 44 Rem Mag for a last chance defense from an attacking bear or a wild hog . Enjoyed the video , it's a good mini kit to carry , I would add some spare batteries , required medications and one of those WALLYMART 5x7 ft nylon mini traps , it's real small when folded . Again enjoyed the video , Hand salute from a VET !
Just some info for you, purification tabs don’t take care of particles but they do disable viruses, so if there is a chance excrement or dead animals have got in the water you are drinking tabs would be better than a straw. Virus particles are too small to be caught in handheld filters. I would recommend filtering then boiling if you are worried. Also Tactical Fanny Pack!!

I recently condensed the majority of one of my "bug out bags" into a butt pack. Of course mine is MOLLE compatible so I can strap it to my main pack and have it as a "cut the weight" option. It also has a belt, top of pack handle and cross body/shoulder strap for multiple carrying options.
I think I would add a couple bars of some kind either a protein or granola, and they have water in small pouches I think a couple of them, just to get you started, since you have the room. AWESOME video as always!!
My Lowe's has a roll of tan plastic painter dropcloth tear-off pieces next to the little red flags as you exit the store, I take one every time I leave store, fold it and store it next to the space blanket, for a quick disposable rain cover or poncho to go along with blanket, adds almost no extra weight or bulk.
...back when I was staking mining claims farther North, we carried a roll of electrician's tape and a kotex pad as our 1st.Aid Kit, in case we whacked ourself with the axe or brush hook. I added an eyecup, always getting stuff in my eyes...plus two big garbage bags with which to improvise a diy sleeping bag or tent...

Fanny pack is a great ideaI to carry as a minimalistic means but you can just about have most of the items In an altoids tin except for the Paracord, water filter and the headlamp. I enjoyed the vid and the exotac line-up but not there price tag associated with most of there products IMHO. I understand that its a quality item so that's to be considered. Thank you.
Great pack, but if you're not using this in conjunction with your edc I'd like some sort of self defense option. This is extra important for civil unrest. Maybe include bear spray or a tazer.
Suggestions: 1.) A sawyer bag but not a Sawyer filter? Yours filters 30 gallons and the Mini claims 100,000 2.) Ditch that baby knife and get a Leatherman Skeletool or Wave 3.) Bic Lighter 4.) Cargo Tape 5.) Put the whistle on a neck lanyard
You should have an old smartphone and a power backup in a small setup like a waist pack. If you turn off the smartphone, the battery should last a couple of weeks. The boot up time sucks, but offline, your old phone can allow access to any info you have already downloaded, like maps and survival guides. If you have access to a cell tower, even a phone without service can access 911 services. Your old phone can also sniff out open wireless access points so you can get on the internet or public access points for internet services you may already pay for. You may be able to access GPS data. Perhaps most importantly and adding to your note taking capability, you can take pictures. Perhaps you are lost, so you can take pics of landmarks to try to avoid walking in circles. You can also record video and audio messages. The power pack backs up this emergency phone and your regular phone.
I like your videos a lot. What I would like to hear or see how your preparedness saved your day or even your life. I know it´s better to have it and not use it instead of needing it and not have it. Keep on going keep the good work up.
This is a good idea - and not just for survival. Also works great when you're out at a state fair, theme park, on a hike, or whatever. I tend to wear these kinds of packs on my side so it's not out of my sight but doesn't completely get in the way either. BTW, does anyone know of a pack like this that has a bit more squarish design (i.e.: better looking)? Thanks!
An option for sure but still prefer a Remora or Fat boy if for nothing else the option to carry a backup firearm. And yes the ladies have always had the right idea about carrying purses, satchels or whatever you want to call them.
It's kool to see this video because I'm currently working on a minimalist/summer edc kit using a waist pack. I intend to mostly carry it as a sling bag. I also like butt pack over fanny pack, sounds much better lol
I prefer a slightly bigger one that lets me carry a water bottle of some sort, an a micro peashooter, but this is way better than another backpack to loadout. Thx for the vid.
ditch the pencil and paper, bandana can do the work of the filter if you know how to choose good sources of water, a bic lighter would be worth adding, i'd prefer a "proper" knife (more substantial folding knife), more cordage (lesser poundage paracord 95-375, or bankline lets you carry far more feet). I'm liking the homemade fire straw fire starters. compact and self contained/protected. Most people don't carry anything like this regularly, why? because they are too bulky and impractical. Lighten up, rely more on skills and knowledge than gadgets. Need to slim down to True essentials. Pencil and paper is not an essential, the straw is not essential if you know what you're doing.
Fanny packs are great. My load out is similar, plus I carry a TQ. Mine is a Spiritus Systems. Keeps me from having to carry it on my body armor somewhere.

One idea I use especially for hiking is an old “h” or “y” harness known as 782 / deuce gear. Its basically a Fanny pack for your butt and it’s attached to a belt which can hold other things like canteens and other pouches. Hooked onto the belt is something like suspenders or backpack straps and it’s like a low bering load.
Great video Sootch! I had a walmart fanny pack survival kit that I put into my backpack that I carried for work as another layer of my work GHB. Unfortunately, that particular bag got stolen from my car so I had build another one.
One more comment about the whole fanny pack idea. I think one reason these get a bad rap is because many just look bad (i.e.: poorly designed). Haven't seen many fanny packs that I would consider good-looking, but IMO a more squarish or body-contoured design is better. Look at cops. They carry alot of stuff around their belt and waist and most of the time it works fine. It's all in how you do it. If it appears you've got a distended gut or a bulbous protrusion out your backside - yeah you can look pretty silly. But it doesn't have to be that way. I think we just need gear companies to design these packs with aesthetics in mind.
I have one and figure if stuff goes south fast where I live it will probably not get much attention if I use it to get out. It is not tactical looking (although maxpedition organizers fit well inside). I think they are a good option and they will fit under most smaller packs.
I edc the bandicoot with a surplus canteen and carrier on the strap slung over my shoulder , I wish the strap was longer to cross body carry if needed.
Carry an aspirin. Carry a compass. Carry a glass breaker. Carry a space pen. Carry a fire steel by all means - also, carry a lighter. Carry a cigarette. You don't smoke? Well, the other guy does, and he has food - carry a cigarette. Carry a P-38 (the can opener, not the aircraft). Carry some batteries. Carry a CH751. Carry a toothpick. See how much space that lot takes up? Carry another cigarette; the other guy is in a bad mood, and I think he's carrying a gun.
I have a CAT(Caterpillar) heavy duty fanny pack. I have a lot af your kind of equipment in it, and some more. But on the outside i have a combo, flashlight and compass and carabiner. Besides the compass i have a small light so i can find things in my pack even in darkness.
Most likely not something I would go for over just my standard backpack of gear. BUT for my 9 year old to get him into EDC or maybe a survival/bushcraft kit he can just slip on and it not be to much gear/weight but enough to help him understand for sure. Might even make an even simplier and "safer" version for my 5 year old.
Hi sootch, good selection of things in your pack, if I may suggest a small repair kit , ie needles , roll of dental floss for thread, small roll tape, safety pins incase a zip goes out,and some painkiller med. Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, dust mask. I'm sure I could go on and on, but that would defeat your excellent small pack, does that bag allow you to carry it across the body like a knapsack ? . Problem with that waist pack is, I would not have it with me. I'm still fond of the idea with the survival kit in the steel bottle. You usually have a place for a (spare) bottle in your gear when you are out and about and there are even some bottle holder waist pack if you want. Also a bottle does not look awkward if you carry it with you.
I prefer to call it a waist pack; fanny in certain countries is a derogatory expression for a female part. It seems that it is coming back in as an EDC bag. I hike with one by Vanguard and it has a 12 to 15 liter capacity and can carry two water bottles or one bottle and a cooking kit in the other pocket; two retention straps can hold a small tarp on the bottom. The pack came with a hand warmer sleeve similar to the ones football players wear on the field in super cold weather and it has its own belt. I wear the pack in back and the hand warmer sleeve in front with an rechargeable hand warmer by Ocoopa. I've actually done overnight hikes with just this pack in warmer months. The main pocket is large enough to pack a woobie and a military poncho. I take a small folding stove and trioxane tablets for boiling water for my coffee in a 450ml titanium cup. It has organizational pockets for smaller survival tools. My head lamp is an Olight i3T EOS that has a hat clip. My food are a couple of Clif or energy bars. I found the Vanguard pack at Green Top on sale for 29 bucks. Green Top is where I buy my 2A supplies.
You need to put one of those windup flashlights in that pouch. Coghlans makes a nice one. Regular flashlights will run out of charge if you have to hike for long long hours.
I just tested some clear hand pump ones that sat in some ancillary emergency bags I had for over a year. I got a bunch from Dollar Tree at one point. They still turned on, which was cool. So I decided to juice them both up by hand for 15 minutes again and leave one on to see how long it would stay on. Switched it on at 5.01pm and it was still going and bright at 8.30am the next morning. Pretty good for a Dollar Tree flashlight.
I like Helicon Tex products. I've got the Matilda and the smaller pack with the two water container pouches on the sides. This fanny pack however doesn't impress me
Swap the headlamp for a Petzl E+Lite! It's more compact! Still puts out enough light and you can carry extra CR2032's and it will still weigh less and take up less room than the other headlamp you have in the pack right now! Also maybe add a Cyalume light stick.

The mylar space blanket can also be used to collect and funnel rainwater or morning dew.
Soak up water with the bandanna (dew) like you said & wring it out into the space blanket.

Thank you and another great video. I do agree about moving it around to your back instead of carrying it on the front but remember if you fall backwards you can injury your back. I understand that a backpack can do the same but that is smaller and in one small area.
I usually put the pouch in back, off to one side. I don't put it right over my spine.
I have a very similar setup in a Maxpedition pouch. However, I also include a 1200 calorie Mainstay bar for some food. Instead of a few bandages, I put a Bratpacker Gear ultralite first aid kit, added a needle with some nylon thread and a fresnel lens. As much as anything the fresnel is redundancy for my eyeglasses, so I have some ability to read if my glasses are lost or broken. Otherwise, the whole pouch is covenient enough to go into a back pack or pants cargo pocket.
My coworkers often carry a fannypack with their regular everyday items in it, i.e. wallet, keys, phone cable, etc. Just so they're not weighing down their pockets. They usually have it in a vehicle, not on them. More like a grab & go pouch. I'd add some BZK wound wipes for those bandaids, maybe a mask, hand sanitizer & a pair of latex gloves.
I used a fanny pack for years while skiing. It did not interfere with the physical act of skiing, downhill or cross country. It carried my lunch, water bottle, and first aid kit.
I purchased a similar pack from Walmart. It has water bottle pouches on both sides. I used it once on a bike day trip. It worked out well.

It never hurts to have that one item you didn't think of. I carry most of these items in my EDC bag, but I do like that little compass he attached to the zipper pull.
I have a slim 2 pound fanny pack survival kit. Great for walking away from camp, leaving the main pack in the tent.

Excellent video! I have a kit very much like that I take on day hikes. I've started packing a mylar poncho instead of the blankets, though. They'll do everything the blankets will do, but also make it much more convenient and effective if you need the additional warmth, but need to stay on the move at the same time (like you're fighting off hypothermia while still trying to make it out of the woods and back to your vehicle).
I also include one of those cheap clear plastic ponchos in case someone else is with me and we both need protection from the weather while we keep moving (a lesson learned because I always brought my jacket when we went out, but my wife never did, so I would give her my jacket and then I'd be cold - so now I bring TWO jackets). ;-)
If you decide you have to hunker down for the night, you can make a small emergency shelter and line the back of it with the reflective poncho, then seal the front using the clear poncho as a door. That will block most of the wind (much more quickly and effectively than piling up tons of debris), but the clear poncho still allows the radiant heat of a fire built in front of your shelter to reach you (which reflects off the shiny poncho behind you as well) - it's like an emergency hot tent.
I have that exact pack in black! I use it to carry when I exercise
in LA fanny packs have been "in" now for many years, so it's not a big deal. furthermore, consider, you can wear it like a sling pack as well
This video motivated me to find my Vanguard waist pack as I buried it in a pile of backpacks in my attic. Sootch, you inspired me to put together another survival kit (fifth in last two weeks). I described The Pioneer by Vanguard in a previous comment. A couple of other features I had forgotten about is (1) the naugahyde bottom hides an attached bright orange rain cover and a (2) bungee cord on top to store a layer of clothing or should you remove your outer layer like a rain jacket. I also had attached a OneTigris EDC pouch on the left hip molles. On the right hip molles I clipped a HAWG hoster I had custom made with carbon fiber and a UTICLIP which stabilizes the holster for a quick draw. A double magazine pouch is attached to the waist strap behind the holster.
My get home bag is a fanny (waist) pack I have had for decades. It has everything I would need to get home.
I have got this exact Helikon Tex waist pack since last summer and I can fully recommend it.
I would add 2 fully deflated medium sized folded trash bags. Maybe a few sandwich bags with zip locks.

I have 2 or 3 head lamps. Have one with my solar charger because that head lamp is rechargeable from walmart. And one in my small belt bag with fire starting/ first aid kit. The recharger and light is in a pouch of it's own molled to my larger first aid kit. And I keep a headlamp in my Large Alice Rick as well. So I have a headlamp wherever I need it and won't forget the headlamp, no matter what gear I have.
Being of Scottish heritage, I wear a kilt & sporran on occasion.
Plenty of room in the sporran for survival/EDC.

I use the exact same Helikon bag as my edc for my trips and excursions into the woods. It is much more capacious than it seems. Made of Cordura. There is a hole on the back for mounting this pocket on a regular belt. I use the second such bag as IFAK in the shooting range.
Coming off of carpal tunnel on my wrist I would put a one handed fire starter in there. You have to assume a possible injury situation. I keep a small thumb lite attached to outside of bag.
I have carpal tunnel as well. One product I would love to try is the Grayl water filter, but I can see it potentially aggravating my wrists with its operation.
I still use a fanny pack in the warmer months. When I hike, I always take it with me, even if I'm carrying my sling bag. Ease of access. I've also added small pouches and phone cases to the belt. Great video as always!

Those mylar blankets are good for signaling (they have been seen by rescue aircraft and have saved lives ) and in making Mors Kochansk typei supershelters but they are not going to keep you very warm for a prolonged period in frigid temperatures. Take one into a very cold situation and try it out for several hours ( or until you get cold) before you stake your life on it in an emergency situation. There are some mylar bivvies that are quite compact that are reviewed elsewhere on UA-cam that might be better but they have condensation issues. If you have a clear drop cloth, cordage, little duct tape and one of those emergency blankets you can build a supershelter that combined with an external fire might actually keep you alive.
My waist pack is made on a padded belt like on a hiking pack . I can attach the bottom of a back pack to it so the packs weight will rest on the top of the waist pack which puts the load on my hips and relieves the weight off my shoulders. The fanny / waist type bag I use is made by Cabela's for fishing . I can also add suspenders to it if needed for use without a backpack . . A good thing is that I can add two 1 quart military canteens , 2 - 1 pint double walled metal bottles ( for hot coffee / ice ) and a pistol and a knife with no problems . I know this video is about going mini . I use this set up mainly for deer hunting . Oh , the gun I carry on is a snub nose 44 Rem Mag for a last chance defense from an attacking bear or a wild hog . Enjoyed the video , it's a good mini kit to carry , I would add some spare batteries , required medications and one of those WALLYMART 5x7 ft nylon mini traps , it's real small when folded . Again enjoyed the video , Hand salute from a VET !
Just some info for you, purification tabs don’t take care of particles but they do disable viruses, so if there is a chance excrement or dead animals have got in the water you are drinking tabs would be better than a straw. Virus particles are too small to be caught in handheld filters. I would recommend filtering then boiling if you are worried.

I recently condensed the majority of one of my "bug out bags" into a butt pack. Of course mine is MOLLE compatible so I can strap it to my main pack and have it as a "cut the weight" option. It also has a belt, top of pack handle and cross body/shoulder strap for multiple carrying options.
Love my Bandicoot. When I really need to down size the EDC bag it's my go to.
Can be worn as a chest pouch.
I think I would add a couple bars of some kind either a protein or granola, and they have water in small pouches I think a couple of them, just to get you started, since you have the room. AWESOME video as always!!
My Lowe's has a roll of tan plastic painter dropcloth tear-off pieces next to the little red flags as you exit the store, I take one every time I leave store, fold it and store it next to the space blanket, for a quick disposable rain cover or poncho to go along with blanket, adds almost no extra weight or bulk.

...back when I was staking mining claims farther North, we carried a roll of electrician's tape and a kotex pad as our 1st.Aid Kit, in case we whacked ourself with the axe or brush hook. I added an eyecup, always getting stuff in my eyes...plus two big garbage bags with which to improvise a diy sleeping bag or tent...

Fanny pack is a great ideaI to carry as a minimalistic means but you can just about have most of the items In an altoids tin except for the Paracord, water filter and the headlamp. I enjoyed the vid and the exotac line-up but not there price tag associated with most of there products IMHO. I understand that its a quality item so that's to be considered. Thank you.
Another alternative would be using a chest pack that are convertible to sling bag/waist pack so you can use the same bag in various scenarios
Yes, I don't have a chest pack but the fanny pack I have. I wear it cross body.
Only thing I'd add is a cheap emergency poncho from the dollar store.
Great pack, but if you're not using this in conjunction with your edc I'd like some sort of self defense option. This is extra important for civil unrest. Maybe include bear spray or a tazer.
Been running this fanny pack as a survival kit for a good while and I like the system. The pack seems to be of good quality also.
Suggestions:
1.) A sawyer bag but not a Sawyer filter? Yours filters 30 gallons and the Mini claims 100,000
2.) Ditch that baby knife and get a Leatherman Skeletool or Wave
3.) Bic Lighter
4.) Cargo Tape
5.) Put the whistle on a neck lanyard
You should have an old smartphone and a power backup in a small setup like a waist pack. If you turn off the smartphone, the battery should last a couple of weeks. The boot up time sucks, but offline, your old phone can allow access to any info you have already downloaded, like maps and survival guides. If you have access to a cell tower, even a phone without service can access 911 services. Your old phone can also sniff out open wireless access points so you can get on the internet or public access points for internet services you may already pay for. You may be able to access GPS data. Perhaps most importantly and adding to your note taking capability, you can take pictures. Perhaps you are lost, so you can take pics of landmarks to try to avoid walking in circles. You can also record video and audio messages. The power pack backs up this emergency phone and your regular phone.
I like your videos a lot. What I would like to hear or see how your preparedness saved your day or even your life. I know it´s better to have it and not use it instead of needing it and not have it. Keep on going keep the good work up.
This is a good idea - and not just for survival. Also works great when you're out at a state fair, theme park, on a hike, or whatever. I tend to wear these kinds of packs on my side so it's not out of my sight but doesn't completely get in the way either. BTW, does anyone know of a pack like this that has a bit more squarish design (i.e.: better looking)? Thanks!
An option for sure but still prefer a Remora or Fat boy if for nothing else the option to carry a backup firearm. And yes the ladies have always had the right idea about carrying purses, satchels or whatever you want to call them.
It's kool to see this video because I'm currently working on a minimalist/summer edc kit using a waist pack. I intend to mostly carry it as a sling bag. I also like butt pack over fanny pack, sounds much better lol

I prefer a slightly bigger one that lets me carry a water bottle of some sort, an a micro peashooter, but this is way better than another backpack to loadout. Thx for the vid.

Maybe check runners packs. They have the water bottle holders on the outside of the pouch.
ditch the pencil and paper, bandana can do the work of the filter if you know how to choose good sources of water, a bic lighter would be worth adding, i'd prefer a "proper" knife (more substantial folding knife), more cordage (lesser poundage paracord 95-375, or bankline lets you carry far more feet). I'm liking the homemade fire straw fire starters. compact and self contained/protected. Most people don't carry anything like this regularly, why? because they are too bulky and impractical. Lighten up, rely more on skills and knowledge than gadgets. Need to slim down to True essentials. Pencil and paper is not an essential, the straw is not essential if you know what you're doing.
Fanny packs are great. My load out is similar, plus I carry a TQ. Mine is a Spiritus Systems. Keeps me from having to carry it on my body armor somewhere.

One idea I use especially for hiking is an old “h” or “y” harness known as 782 / deuce gear. Its basically a Fanny pack for your butt and it’s attached to a belt which can hold other things like canteens and other pouches. Hooked onto the belt is something like suspenders or backpack straps and it’s like a low bering load.
It’s best to look it up cause im not very good at explaining things 😅

Great video Sootch! I had a walmart fanny pack survival kit that I put into my backpack that I carried for work as another layer of my work GHB. Unfortunately, that particular bag got stolen from my car so I had build another one.
You can wear the pack, sling the pack, or use it as a break away from your pack. The versatility is incredible.
I can totally see making that a first aid kit to accommodate your other packs or bags.
Money saving suggestion: instead of buying tinder you can use dryer lint.
One more comment about the whole fanny pack idea. I think one reason these get a bad rap is because many just look bad (i.e.: poorly designed). Haven't seen many fanny packs that I would consider good-looking, but IMO a more squarish or body-contoured design is better. Look at cops. They carry alot of stuff around their belt and waist and most of the time it works fine. It's all in how you do it. If it appears you've got a distended gut or a bulbous protrusion out your backside - yeah you can look pretty silly. But it doesn't have to be that way. I think we just need gear companies to design these packs with aesthetics in mind.
i have one a bit biggar with more pockets. i carry lixarda small twig stove , small monocular, folding cup ,kfs, and pan. small mirror and bic. Derek

I have one and figure if stuff goes south fast where I live it will probably not get much attention if I use it to get out. It is not tactical looking (although maxpedition organizers fit well inside). I think they are a good option and they will fit under most smaller packs.
I edc the bandicoot with a surplus canteen and carrier on the strap slung over my shoulder , I wish the strap was longer to cross body carry if needed.
Carry an aspirin. Carry a compass. Carry a glass breaker. Carry a space pen. Carry a fire steel by all means - also, carry a lighter. Carry a cigarette. You don't smoke? Well, the other guy does, and he has food - carry a cigarette. Carry a P-38 (the can opener, not the aircraft). Carry some batteries. Carry a CH751. Carry a toothpick. See how much space that lot takes up? Carry another cigarette; the other guy is in a bad mood, and I think he's carrying a gun.

I have a CAT(Caterpillar) heavy duty fanny pack. I have a lot af your kind of equipment in it, and some more. But on the outside i have a combo, flashlight and compass and carabiner. Besides the compass i have a small light so i can find things in my pack even in darkness.
Most likely not something I would go for over just my standard backpack of gear. BUT for my 9 year old to get him into EDC or maybe a survival/bushcraft kit he can just slip on and it not be to much gear/weight but enough to help him understand for sure. Might even make an even simplier and "safer" version for my 5 year old.
Hi sootch, good selection of things in your pack, if I may suggest a small repair kit , ie needles , roll of dental floss for thread, small roll tape, safety pins incase a zip goes out,and some painkiller med. Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, dust mask. I'm sure I could go on and on, but that would defeat your excellent small pack, does that bag allow you to carry it across the body like a knapsack ? . Good suggestions - that repair kit should probably contain a small tube of cyanoacrylate glue.
Recommend carrying a wire saw in ur survival pack. Tremendous cutting power for the weight.
Problem with that waist pack is, I would not have it with me. I'm still fond of the idea with the survival kit in the steel bottle. You usually have a place for a (spare) bottle in your gear when you are out and about and there are even some bottle holder waist pack if you want.
Also a bottle does not look awkward if you carry it with you.
I used a fanny pack for my fishing kit many years ago. It worked out quite well.
I prefer to call it a waist pack; fanny in certain countries is a derogatory expression for a female part. It seems that it is coming back in as an EDC bag. I hike with one by Vanguard and it has a 12 to 15 liter capacity and can carry two water bottles or one bottle and a cooking kit in the other pocket; two retention straps can hold a small tarp on the bottom. The pack came with a hand warmer sleeve similar to the ones football players wear on the field in super cold weather and it has its own belt. I wear the pack in back and the hand warmer sleeve in front with an rechargeable hand warmer by Ocoopa. I've actually done overnight hikes with just this pack in warmer months. The main pocket is large enough to pack a woobie and a military poncho. I take a small folding stove and trioxane tablets for boiling water for my coffee in a 450ml titanium cup. It has organizational pockets for smaller survival tools. My head lamp is an Olight i3T EOS that has a hat clip. My food are a couple of Clif or energy bars. I found the Vanguard pack at Green Top on sale for 29 bucks. Green Top is where I buy my 2A supplies.

I carry the Vanquest Dandrite Fanny pack . I carry it across my chest and it holds plenty of gear. Glad to see you doing a video on the Fanny pack .
You need to put one of those windup flashlights in that pouch. Coghlans makes a nice one. Regular flashlights will run out of charge if you have to hike for long long hours.
I just tested some clear hand pump ones that sat in some ancillary emergency bags I had for over a year. I got a bunch from Dollar Tree at one point.
They still turned on, which was cool. So I decided to juice them both up by hand for 15 minutes again and leave one on to see how long it would stay on.
Switched it on at 5.01pm and it was still going and bright at 8.30am the next morning. Pretty good for a Dollar Tree flashlight.

I like Helicon Tex products. I've got the Matilda and the smaller pack with the two water container pouches on the sides. This fanny pack however doesn't impress me

Swap the headlamp for a Petzl E+Lite! It's more compact! Still puts out enough light and you can carry extra CR2032's and it will still weigh less and take up less room than the other headlamp you have in the pack right now! Also maybe add a Cyalume light stick.
