You need to explain to your department that what they did was wrong. Don’t be a puppet. You are either promoting this behavior or you tolerate. Both are TERRIBLE. Your department racially profiled and violated the rights of those students. It has nothing to do with how difficult the officers job is. Those students didn’t attack the officers. He said “we are too quick to judge.” When in fact, your officers where extremely too quick to judge a bus full of college students and athletes. Your officers did not once treat them as such. Those officers put them young aspiring ladies through an traumatized experience and did not once apologize to them at all. It felt like to me that they where disappointed that they didn’t find any criminal activities to profile them on. The bus driver and the young ladies spoke and answered questions with so much respect, and the whole time the cops where speaking to them as if they where criminal. Assuming the worse. At best, the bus driver should have just gotten a ticket and kept it moving. I’m sure these cops, collectively, have a lot of experiences doing their jobs, and that their intuition told them there was nothing suspicious on this bus with those college students. They just chose to be assholes and put them young black college women through a traumatized experience. Meanwhile, real criminal where probably passing by them as they where being assholes to some college students. Shameful to the State of Georgia…Just pure shameful!!! Ok I'm done. I tried to watch the whole interview. I tried to give this sheriff a chance. What a total waste of time. First the reporter failed to do his homework. He failed to contradict or question statements made by this person that were clearly false regarding traffic stops in general and this stop in particular that were clearly false. Buses traveling in the left lane in Georgia is not illegal, the regulation only applies to transport trucks like semi's. The regulation specifically says it does not apply to buses. There is no such thing as open air alerts, he completely made that shit up. Furthermore Georgia's ruling on drug search dogs usage clearly states that the use of drug dogs in the course of a routine traffic stop without reasonable suspicion shall be considered a violation of civil rights. And no they are not doing this all over the country. This person was so shifty, his body language was giving off so many clear indications of lying that I couldn't take it anymore.

Wrong, the only color they care about is green. This happens thousands of times every day all over the country, and for the most part, the people being pulled over are white and so are the cops. They screw everyone equally and then they steal from them using asset forfeiture. No charges are filed, but you have to prove your innocence before they will return your property. They are road pirates using fraudulent methods to make contact with travelers and search their vehicles fraudulently as well. Any type of assets you have in your vehicle that they discover, they will take using asset forfeiture. They are not required to file any criminal charges, but you still must prove your innocence before the criminals will return your stolen property. This happens all across our country to the tune of billions of dollars every year. And the law is written that the local cops and District Attorneys office get to keep these assets for themselves. Now you know why these cops are out there on our highways victimizing passers by. Greedy bully's who enjoy using their badges and guns to stop you, search you, and steal from you. Using fear, threats, and violence if you do not cooperate and let them rob you.

Second, the officer who told them to enjoy the rest of their trip should have instead apologized for wasting their time. Third, the sheriff and the officer in charge at the scene should have publicly apologized to the citizens of Hinesville for wasting their tax payer dollars and resources. Fourth, the sheriff said his officers did not go through their personal belongings, but the body cams show differently. They even opened a package sent to one of the young women by her aunt. Exactly. They can make what they’re doing try to sound official. It’s still illegal. They are using pretext traffic stops to target drivers. They are stopping people to get access. They think have a drug dog “already there “ means that can dog sniffs on every car that crosses their paths. They can’t. In order to legally call out the dogs - there needs to be probable cops of some kind of drug activity. They didn’t have it. A dog getting an “air hit “ is like a smelling a fart in the wind. however, there is a separate GA statute regarding buses and motorcoaches - O.C.G.A. § 40-6-53(a) specifically relates to three-lane interstate highways, and the letter of the law is express in this.. but, there is specific signage on this stretch of highway that specifically restrict trucks, and such signage is required by the other statute related to trucks, so it's very clear to see how and why the bus driver or any larger passenger transport vehicle might be confused.. in my opinion the statutes are too ambiguous and should be addressed with legislative clarifications.. with all that said, it appears there was initially a valid reason for the stop but it quickly devolved into 4th and 14th amendment violations.. they overstepped the boundaries the moment the officer stepped onto the bus to begin lecturing the passengers.. the action of the officers was purely shameful and clearly pretextual

Also, what RAS was found to have their dogs do a "Terry Smell" (terry frisk) on the outside of the vehicle, then searching their personal belongings only to find NOTHING because narc dogs pick up on ANY substances, including legal medications. Drug dogs are notoriously inaccurate on the side of the road and there are numerous studies to prove that. What caused the actual suspicion that there were actually drugs on the bus other than what the officer said to his associate, there's a bunch of young girls on it, so he's sure they have some weed? Maybe he's ok with putting his kids through this, like it's no big deal, but most people find it intrusive, demeaning, offensive and embarrassing. Just because it may be within the letter of the law, doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do. Especially, all day, every day. I'm an old bald headed white guy who has backed the blue for most of my life and this is just wrong. You just shot your whole defense to the search your deputies conducted in the foot. To make an apology, thanks for admitting that it can be done better. If you are aware that it could be better, then why wasn’t it done better?
Your deputies are idiots to think that an open air search of a commercial vehicle that is historically used for transporting passengers and luggage, that regardless of whether anything was found, it would not be able to be used because there is no way to prove that the smell was reasonably expected to be a result of the current passengers, and you admitted to that yourself.
If you think that this wasn’t a traumatic experience for these young ladies, then I suppose you are okay with everyone of these women to search your property, your family’s property, as long as they “put it all back together.” Your department treated these women like meat, not people. There was no concern for the traumatic experience that having one’s property rifled through has on the public. You’re reaction is only because you have a firestorm. You didn’t address this proactively, this is a reactive response. You don’t see wrong for wrong, you only see what happens when you are forced to deal with it. I have no trust for you, or your department. You put a bunch of incompetent thugs with guns on a bus. Do you honestly believe that the people that elected you and fund your department had this expectation for what was going to be done with the funds entrusted to your department, with the trust that is afforded to you and your deputies? Remember, you said there is no way to tell (where the smell is from). That is simply an admission of going blindly forward with violating the public’s right to privacy with no reasonable suspicion or probable cause. That’s just shaking the tree. If you are not ashamed of yourself and your department, then I would say to you that your “faith” is not where it needs to be.

Knowing what your ancestors went through you should be ashamed. When the deputy got on the bus and saw black kids. And what he said in the car about they must have drugs. Shame on you

    Let me translate:
"done everywhere in Georgia and in the United States"; Translation: Since people just sit there and allow there Constitutional Rights be violated because they are afraid of us, cops everywhere get to do pretty much whatever they want
"Not unusual to get a hit by the dog"; Translation: Officers routinely do things to cause the dog to get a hit, so even though it wasn't really a hit we can say it was and do whatever we want.
"Me deputies did nothing wrong"; Translation: WE violate rights all the time, its common practice
"I misspoke about no searches"; Translation: I screwed up and didn't realize the bodycam was released but corrected myself once I knew that the truth was out there

Oh my God. Isnt that one of the most abused part of American policing ?if a policeman says the dog alerted how do you audit that.how do you querry that.whats an alert ?its like saying i heard my dead grandmother speak to me this morning"how do you prove that .this must stop

Exactly right. Copsplaining is the method used to relate to citizens the truth of how cops operate illegally in our society. They lie, cheat, steal, assault, and murder on a daily basis and have no intention of changing their ways, ever. Get the picture?

Race became a factor for the search.
The stop was " Enterprisal" in nature Ie. Racketeering
The stop was pretextualized and escalated beyond the pretention into an attempt to profit from the possession of items deemed verboten.

A routine traffic stop = constitutional rights has to be violated. The state of Georgia has forfeiture laws that allows seizure of money and property without a warrant if officers suspect if you're a drug trafficker. A federal lawsuit needs to be filed against that department.....PERIOD!

First of all, the first officer entered that bus without permission or RAS to do so, that ALONE violated this entire traffic stop. Having a narc dog sniff outside a vehicle without RAS is just like an officer doing a Terry Frisk without RAS. Narc dogs are considered officers of the law, so therefore they should be held to the same standards as an officer of the law.
Sheriff, if your officers could have did "better" then that means they didn't follow the "letter," FYI.
Their is NO way they should've had that dog do a "Terry Smell" (terry frisk) without RAS or PC. Sheriff, what was the RAS or PC to have the dogs sniff the outside of the bus in the first place??? It was a simple left lane moving violation. That's why y'all getting so much public heat from this traffic stop, FYI. Them dogs even hit on legal medications, so y'all need to be CAREFUL of when you bring out the dogs, without RAS or PC.

You saw the prescription drug bottle and how he looked it over like he was thinking about opening it. That might be the only thing that he realized he couldn’t do. I actually think these cops needed something to do and they stumbled into a giant public relations disaster. Those daggone body cameras and other video are a complete nightmare, aren’t they, Mr. Sheriff??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The traffic stop itself wasn't any type of racial profiling. But as soon as the deputies stepped onto the bus and assumed the women were a "a bus load of school girls" and "there is most likely weed". They assumed wrong because he later asked "other than the driver are there any more adults on the bus?". And another deputy or two needed to correct his assumptions and informed him they are all college students. He assumed if they were high school kids they would most likely have drugs on them? What if they were high school students on a away game? Would they have detained all of them and talked down to them in a more condescending way? That sherrif is badge blind. Of course his deputies could never do wrong.
Canine drug dogs have to have more accreditation. Because with the wrong training a handler can have the dog hit on anything, especially if that is used as probable cause to search beyond the 4th amendment.

The sheriff said that the officers have a lot of leeway to give out there but they gave the young ladies no leeway in the way they treated them. They also gave them no compassion which he also referred to as well. Additionally, the language in which they spoke about the young ladies while not in their presence was also disrespectful, course and disgraceful. The lead officer while reporting back to headquarters via the radio transmitter acknowledged that they had a bunch of young college girls on the bus. Once they got on the bus and saw who they were dealing with they thought they would be able to find something on a pretextual stop. If those young ladies have been from Duke University or UNC they would have ticketed the driver and allowed them to be on their way.
