My dad used to have a business card for some soil science consultant with a little comic of people building the Tower of Pisa with one guy saying to the other "And we can save a fortune if we skip the soil tests!"
      That always cracked me up.

My favorite I've done is the USS Missouri, just because of its size. It's 3 sheet kit but the completed model is close to TWELVE INCHES LONG. Its absolutely massive compared to other metal earth kits. The hardest part of ships is always forming the contours of the hull.

I know this comment is 7 years after but I had to say something because I’m almost finished with the Mars Rover for a friend who has his name on a plaque that’s supposed to go to Mars. I’ve built all types of models, my own RV aircraft and am a hobby machinist. Short of electrical, I used every skill I acquired over 50 years of working with metal except on a miniature scale. These little kits presented a very rewarding challenge with equal amounts of frustration. When I first started building it I thought there was no way I’d ever do this again but I was committed to finishing it. I have a warning for anyone, I think building them is seriously addictive. My only tip is get some tools mentioned in these comments and other videos. I only stumbled across the videos today and didn’t realize how popular they are. Thanks for sharing your models and information.

Great reviews and tips. Here's one for everyone. When doing any curved surface use a appropriate size dowel and a mouse pad. Roll it like you would a rolling pin and you'll get perfect curves with no creases.

5:24 That building is probably the hardest and most fragile building I've done. It broke on several taps and I was ready to just give up but i managed to finish it. But as you said, there is several design flaws in it making it hard to make perfect.. I use tape to hold some thing in to place. Ive built around 20 puzzels :)

Just built the A-10 warthog, most frustrating thing i have ever done... I built the tie bomber and im pretty sure i glued half of it... the biggest problem i have with these are the directions being very unclear sometimes and forming circles.

My third metal earth model is Iron Man , the first two being R2D2 and Imperial Star Destroyer.
Broken quite a few pieces and there were times I thought I would give up but I'm glad that I put it through.
I would say the shin parts are virtually impossible to fit in.
Overall it's an incredible artwork with minor flaws.

I always add a touch of superglue whenever I have loose fitting connections like on your Snow Speeder. It is also pretty handy for reattaching parts when you accidentally bent a piece back and one too many times and it snaps and breaks on you. It truly is an invaluable tool for making these models, especially the ones with a lot of really small pieces.
The only problem that I have ran into with superglue (like the super thin liquid super glue in small bottles) is how long it takes for the glue to set up. It honestly isn't a big complaint really, it would just make things a tiny bit easier to assemble in certain spots. I have experimented with hot glue for its quicker drying time, but it really doesn't seem to want to stick to the metal very well. Super glue in those really small syringes would be best for precision, and ease of use. There are other faster drying superglues, I just don't happen to have any on hand at the moment.

      Epoxy glue 2 parts

    • @STSGuitar16
      @STSGuitar16 Рік тому +1

@@johnbangkok5004 i feel like that would end up wasting a ton of epoxy, though. Like, I just use super glue as needed, which is probably less than ten times through an entire build, and when I do use it there is typically a good stretch before I need to use it again. Seems like the epoxy would set up before I could use all of it, even if I only mixed it up in small batches. Plus it would be overkill in terms of how strong it is.
That did make me think about UV resin, though. Pretty sure that stuff sets within seconds of shining the UV light on it, so that could potentially be useful. It would be difficult for some areas where you can’t get a good angle on the light to be able to set the resin, but all in all that might be one of the better options. That said, a medium viscosity super glue with a really fast dry time is still the ideal option, imo.

Really cool video, thanks. I bought a couple of these at a star wars themed store on a whim thinking that they were for kids and it would be a fun quick little thing. I had no tools to speak of, I'm currently using fingernail scissors (plus some folding) to separate the pieces off of the sheets and tweezers to put the things together. I have some needle-nose pliers but I like the tweezers as they feel a bit more precise to me. The rounded parts are the hardest for me, I've had more success making a pretty rough shape to connect and then adjust into a better circle.
I did an x-wing first (not the one you have though, apparently there are two x wings), then I did the first order snowspeeder, and recently I picked up the model t. Unfortunately none of these are on your list, I was hoping to get a feel for how difficult these are in relation to the rest. At first I was surprised that they weren't that easy, but I think I've gotten the hang of them (at least the ones I've done).
Yours all look great. In particular I think the tanks and the capitol building look the coolest so I might go for one of these next.

I purchased the Captain America shield today. It was my first one. Wasn’t too difficult. I just don’t like the way they designed it. The shield has a huge split down the middle that runs about three quarters in, and you are to put the two ends together and “close” the split. Finished product you can still easily see the split down the middle if you’re really looking. Still really fun. Nice collection, I’ll be purchasing more!

I'm surprised you thought the Neuschwanstein Castle was simple. That thing drove me crazy from start to finish.
We must have gotten different versions of the Dubai hotel. I finished that one in less than 15 minutes while watching TV. I thought it was as easy as the Eiffel Tower. [EDIT: Your model is the Iconx version. Haven't built that yet but it looks hard. I made the ME version.]
Those are my only disagreements. Thanks for posting this video. Anybody thinking about getting into Metal Earth models should watch this first so they don't try to start out with a Tie Fighter or something and get frustrated right off the bat.

Fellow Communist (nice user name!) I started with the Darth Vader Tie Fighter. Turned into a super-glued mess as well.
Start with easy ones like the Metal Earth Eiffel Tower (15 minutes, no frustration), and work your way up from there. Other super easy ones, other than what's mentioned in the video, include the Metal Earth Arc de Triomphe and Burj al Arab (not the Iconx versions)
If you like Star Wars, the Imperial Star Destroyer is the easiest (guy in video seems to agree). Takes maybe 30-40 minutes, with very little difficulty

    • @jlazell
      @jlazell  8 років тому

I definitely recommend starting with the monuments. You need tweezers and/or needle nose pliers, some round items to bend curved parts on (screw driver shafts, pencil, dowel rods etc) possibly some glue. I like to bend the pieces back and forth until they fall off the sheet but some people prefer wire cutters. I don't know what else to recommend right now, try searching Metal Earth Tips and Tricks. Good luck!

I am on my fifth kit. I built the F4u Corsair, B17 Bomber, Star Trek Enterprise, and Cessna 172. I am working on the dragonfly now. Of all of these, the Cessna was the most difficult. It is only one sheet, but it had some real challenges. The rear window of the cabin has to be bent before attaching that section to the sides. If it is not bent, the tabs for the wings will be too far apart. The attachment for the propeller is weird and kept falling off. I would attach it last. Finally, the bottom of fuselage required manipulating it between the sides to fit six tabs. I found this impossible. I got the back four tabs into their slots and just bent the front part into position.

Not very reliable. I just finished a model (Shanghai Financial Center) that only had seven pieces and four steps that turned out to be extremely hard.

These are difficult kit ! View it as a challenge. I've just finished the Hogwarts Express Iconx and it a real challenge. The hand rail along the boiler are so small it is impossible not to bent them. Nice result .

hey great collection. i have been buying these since last year and i got around 50 of them, but only got 3 done.
what do you use to glue some parts in if in case it breaks of or something? thanks.

on occasion I've needed glue and I've had great success with model CA glue. So far I've always gotten away with using it on the tabs on the inside so it's never been visible. plus with CA glue you put it on, maneuver the parts exactly where you want them, then spray or dab on the accelerator and it dries instantly.

Some of these metal earth models are expensive. The prices start from $6.00 to $34.00 depending on model, license, level, gold, color, and attractiveness according to what metal earth model you buy off from Amazon Prime.

jeff hightshoe just finished building the ISD. Fitting the top and bottom was the most satisfying part. Don’t give up if you are frustrated. Maybe you did not put the middle parts in correctly

I "completed" the Delorean in about 10 hours with nippers and tweezers. I broke three parts but the rest still fit. It was my first one and and really fun but pretty difficult

A few days ago I built the X-Wing as my first model of these.
    To almost perfect condition.
    Took just over 4 hours.
With my right hand in a SERIOUSLY immobilizing casting after I had broken my wrist.
Is the X-Wing model just that easy or can I actually say I've got some skills at this kinda stuff?

What tools did you use to get everything so perfectly round, I can't even do it on the Mars rover.
