If you have ever travelled to Vietnam you'd know that there is simply no need to buy fast food crap when you are literally surrounded by amazing local food everywhere you go
No. They don’t take it personally. They just didn’t think about going in. Cos it’s still relatively expensive and they r not open to trying, nice they still stick to local food. It’s just local being truly local
Yeah, I'm Vietnamese and these fast food are expensive af, you're considered rich man to just dine there everyday (for special occassion, it's pretty decent, but that's it).

Salomé : nope it's not expensie at all , im vietnamese and i can confirm that a burger cost the same as a normal lunch.
here in the philippines, when i was younger, we considered fast foods as luxury, good but expensive, we would rather eat in small cheap independent local store called "karenderia" regularly and eat in this expensive fast foods occasionally. but that was then when the philippines was underdeveloped. now fast foods are full and everywhere, now that we can afford them.
The country is among those having the highest rate of entrepreneurship, which opening individual restaurants is easy. McDonald just simply outcompeted by local businesses with cheaper prices, quality services and good food. Many international banks recently pulled out of Vietnam as well
The same situation still happens in Vietnam. Fast food is still relatively expensive in Vietnam. One meal of fast food could get me 4 traditional meals, and they're not even as tasteful
I’ve been back to Vietnam many times. Not once have I considered eating American fast food there. Why eat unhealthy crap when you can get fresh and delicious local food at a fraction of the cost.
@msc14111990 I guess you've never been to Vietnam huh? Bun cha (grilled pork noodles with dipping sauce), pho (of course but it should be from the north of Vietnam), banh mi (vietnamese traditional burger) and many other delicious dishes accross the country, you might think again
As a Vietnamese I felt great about the big fast food guys failing. It means the smaller vendors are thriving. I would say it's the low cost, around-the-corner availability, familiar good taste, and the service (i.e. food being prepared right in front of you by a friendly person that you know by face and name). The sharability and "chicken" factors have nothing to do with it. We Vietnamese eat a lot of beef too, and French fries are very sharable. McD and BK had an easier times getting in the other Asian markets maybe due to people's willingness to adopt new things, but they didn't come in and completely dominate. Street foods still rule the streets in India, China, Japan, Korea etc. Given time and proper strategy they may thrive in Viet Nam as well, like KFC did. But they can never win against or replace the traditional street food culture, it is our way of life in Asia.
As a Vietnamese do you agree that street vendors are much more affordable for the average Viet. Even as a third world country Fast food is considered a luxury for most citizens. And still too expensive for those who don’t live above the poverty line??
yeah... just admit that macdonalds is too expensive to eat there daily. as a kid growing up in a developing country, i wanted to eat at macdonalds all the time, but it was too expensive to eat there when ever i wanted.
Carlos Leon Lol then you don't need to get noodles? Vietnamese food does not consist of noodles in everything. Go get yourself Banh Mi or rice plate or something.
Some Vietnamese might be asking themselves about why they should enjoy some expensive and unhealthy junk foods instead of a lot of so delicious and cheap also very healthy local foods .....,
I think this perspective has some validity, but it also ignores the success and pervasiveness of fried chicken fast food options in Vietnam. Three new fried chicken shops have just opened in my neighborhood (in Saigon/HCM). One of them is Popeye's, another is a local franchise, and there are still many KFC's and a few Jollibee's around. These chains are finding more success than burger options here, but they are certainly not more healthy.
I'll tell you why: _Fast food: just in menu _VN food: everywhere and diverse _Fast food: expensive, not enough _VN food: The price is stable, cheaper, full of ingredients, processed sophisticatedly, very full _Fast food: call "fast" but wait up 15 to 30 minutes to eat _VN food: this lady takes less than 1 minute to bring you a typical dish, very hot and delicious
Yes, 1minute to 3. if a Vietnamese street fast food stall serves more than 5 minutes for a dish, he will lose the customer and must close the door. Vietnamese cuisine is really fast food, Mc donald is just slow food
When I was a kid I was so confused why McDonald's was called a "fast food restaurant", as it was neither fast nor cheap at the time in my hometown. It was much more expensive than most of the local restaurants and street food stands, and you needed to wait much longer as well. The food was so pricey that poor people couldn't afford it, and the others only went there occasionally for some special events, like a reward to the kids or just made a decision to dine out as a whole family on a festival. It was never perceived as "fast food" until the recent ten years when people started to get enough income to eat there more often, and food from other stores starts to cost you almost the same as well. So the situation in Vietnam is not surprising to me. The only problem is the marketing strategy - what do you think you are in the eyes of the Vietnamese? If you think you're a fast food restaurant, which is not true in the local's eyes, then everything you put on the marketing strategy would be a joke to them. The marketing strategy they used in my hometown tended to work, as they tried to make themselves look "convenient but luxurious". It filled the gap between "fine restaurant" and "top-level fast food", which is why people would still go there occasionally.
@@hansenyang4014 I'm from a city in a relatively poorer region in China. Twenty years ago a set in McDonald's cost you twice but with only half the portion than a local fine restaurant, five times or even more than the local food stands where you can have a pretty good meal. It still costs you slightly more than the local food stands now, but the price there is finally the same as the average level fast food restaurants. The only problem is that people don't get used to their style of food, and McDonald's hasn't changed much in the past twenty years (compared to KFC which is pretty much a Chinese restaurant now). That's why it's big but not huge in my hometown, and they're sometimes even struggling in some pretty busy areas - if I can eat in the local restaurants or KFC which serve the food I like more, why bother going to McDonald's?
@Suyaris I don't know where you are but for me it's still expensive, even with other fastfood chains. The price gap is even futher if you compare it with smaller provinces.
Not really. I'm Vietnamese and I honestly admit that Vietnamese foods are not clean and healthy even they taste very good. Vietnamese foods consist of a lot of sugar and salt than Western fast foods in general. We pick local or vendor foods bcz of our budget.😁
Nothing to do with it. Here in Australia, VN people can afford it, but still refuse to east western foods, preferring to stick to their own cuisine. Something that has baffled me, because there is a lot of good tasting western food out there.
Tom B it’s because most Vietnamese who grow up in Vietnam are not accustomed to cheese/butter or dairy use in cooking which a lot of Western cuisines use so they assume that all Western cuisines are greasy and fatty. Also South East Asian cuisines are heavily spiced compared to most Western so to the Vietnamese palate Western cuisines seem “bland”. Me, I find each kind of cuisine has its own beauty but I’m the odd one because I was raised in a Vietnamese-French culinary family.
Totally agree, most of my family tends to find Western (specifically American) food to be either too bland, or too sweet. We grew up eating a lot of pork, seafood and rice using sauces and liquid spices such as Fish Sauce, lime, shrimp paste, and chili garlic a lot. Steak and chicken was always kinda eh.
I tell you why, for having been there several times : the vast majority of the Vietnamese do not eat unhealthy crap. The Vietnamese are, most of them, wise people who are not fooled by a flashy advert.
Lol it’s actually because they go out to locals more, and some of that included unhealthy food. Its extremely common for students to buy some food (unknown ingredients and origins) from ur Miss Huong local stand up store. One of my friend still go there with her friends if they can (we’re in different school)
Vietnamese food are the best!! In Vietnam, you won't be interested in any of the fast food because there are so many better food options! Local, healthier Vietnamese food!😋 Oh mi gosh, I miss Vietnam so much.
Vietnamese people love to eat vegetables, we eat a lot of vegetables for healthy balance, not just a lil salad. With Vietnamese people, they are Fatty foods not Fast foods
Mc donald không phải thức ăn nhanh đối với chúng tôi. Những người bán hàng đường phố phục vụ 100 bánh mì /giờ mới thực sự là thức ăn nhanh. Mcdonald phục vụ chưa thực sự nhanh 🤣
Here in Canada, a giant bowl of Pho is roughly $11 while a Big Mac meal is around $10. While the Big Mac is a little cheaper, I'd rather go with a bowl of Pho because not only I get more bang for my buck but also because the people working on Pho restaurants are very nice and cheerful.
@@assussin0 nah in brand-name restaurants in hcmc its around 2-3 dollars now (can go up to 4$ and more but I have hardly seen prices like that before). Cheaper spots can be about 1.5$.
What has been under reported is that a book written by a North Vietnamese general, long after the war, states that the US was a day away, twice, from winning the war. All the demonstrations by domestic leftists in the US actually stopped important advances at these two instances giving the north life saving time to hold on.
Who wants to eat McDonald's expensive and unhealthy junk food when you can have excellent and healthy Vietnamese food for quarter of the price? And by the way, fast food is not the one people think: if we understand the meaning of "fast" the same way, then the Vietnamese street food is the fast food _par excellence._ Indeed, when you order a _phở_ or a _bún bò Huế,_ you have it right away; at McDonald's, you need to wait until 10 minutes after payment until you get your burger or your French fries!
They are not healthy, street food vendors often getting their materials from questionable source resulting stomach ache and other health risks. Unless you manage to find upright vendors who lived on their own code of business, it is not recommend to earting outside. Food poisoning is a serious national issue in Vietnam for years. Ofc there are many family restaurants that are slightly more expensive but offering safer and better food.
@@quchi7232 Shaken beef(com bo lu clac), chicken pho, banh mi bbq pork with pickled veggies. Also try deep fried cornish game hen with orange rice and plum sauce dip for the game hen. If you live in California go to pho 79 for beef pho. Also vietnamese beef stew pronounced bo kah. I eat it with rice but they usually serve it with bread.
Newsflash, Mcdonalds was originally 1960 ourdoors burger restaurant. Today they microwave frozed plastic wrapped food with no regard for hygiene, taste, nor customer satisfaction. Before, in USA, restaurant were scare, now you can have real cooked and prepared lunches for same price . Fastfood era has, is and will continue to be in decline.
South East Asia food industry is always gonna be the toughest to breakthrough. Fast food chain can have growth because of population growth and younger people being accustomed to western food. But competing with things like singapore, bangkok, or malaysian hawkers, or even Indonesian and Vietnamese cuisine is almost impossible. Their spices and food taste is centuries ahead.
Why would anyone pay high price for disgusting food when you can find anywhere on the street delightfull, natural and cheap food like banh mi or pho?? Keep it up Vietnam
Believe me, I’m a Vietnamese and you’re running a lot of risks buying street food. Always find a restaurant or at least a store front, a cart is risky. I got food poisoning from a “banh trang tron” (Mixed rice papers) once. Learned my lesson, never did it since.
Vietnamese people are very smart. They prefer spending their money at the local street vendors rather than giving them to the greedy American corporations.
@@MinhNguyen-ff6xf yeah but those are kinda a get together, and are reasonably priced for what we're getting. Most people I know consume hot pot buffet on a monthly basis, but less so for sushi, and even less for fried chicken. But it's not like no one eats there, I do go to KFC and Jollibee from times to times for their 50k combo(chicken, drink, rice, and with Jollibee soup). That's a good enough deal for an occasional meal for me and most people in my circle. Mcdonald's charge 60k for a burger with small fries. 60k. That's already 10k higher than I'd pay normally. And for a meal like that lol. I've been there once and I'm never going to pay them out of my pocket ever again with that absurd price
I know in some parts of Vietnam we have traveling vendors too, I remember back in Saigon we had an uncle who would push a small noodle vendor cart through the neighborhood like an ice cream man in the states or a ramen vendor cart in Japan. It was called mi go and I would bring my own bowl he would put everything in there for 70 cents.
This has a lot of variety too, you can get some sauteed corn with salted egg, bánh mì, Vietnamese bean dessert, all sorts of traditional Vietnamese dessert and they're sold for super cheap and super delicious.
Dude! There are vendors everywhere in Vietnam. From local park, to ally, to street. You’ll find them everywhere selling either fresh fruits and vegetables, snacks, and food that will fill up your belly.

All the comments are saying the same thing, which is true. Vietnamese food is incredible, its so fresh and healthy, makes you feel good when you eat it. I can't imagine that with all that good food readily available and so affordable that you would spend money on stodgy burgers and chips
I lived in vietnam for over 18 years. The local food there is awesome, id say better than my home countrys' food. If i'd had an option for fast food from these chains or local food, local food anyday everyday
Wow a lot of people are looking way to deep into this. Have you had Vietnamese food? It's amazing, fast, fresh and smells incredible. Why the heck would you go to a McDonald's or Burger King when the streets are lined with incredible food?
The BBQ Jerk that’s a huge assumption you’re making. When I was in Vietnam last July I didn’t see any dirty street food vendors. In fact most of my meals in Asia came from street vendors. I Never got sick. And if you get parasites that might mean you made a poor choice in buying from that stand. Just pick a stand with a lot of customers and you’re safe. Either way, McDonald’s could never compare to Banh Mi or Pho.
American food is the most popular food in the world. There are tens of thousands of American restaurants all around the world in almost every country. Even the Vietnamese love it. They are willing to pay 1 or 2 days wages for a meal. There are 17 McDonald's and 13 Burger Kings in Vietnam. How many KFCs, Pizza Huts, Taco Bells, etc.?
@@RedRider1600 I hate it. Do not say a whole nation's people love it. It just personal preference. I never see taco Bell even in China. No one eat taco here. And it's Mexican food.
It's the same with Starbucks, I've found. I go to a Starbucks in Bangkok and it's nearly the same price as back in the US, so it's seen as a luxury when you can get better coffee on the street or in small local cafes at a cheaper price. Starbucks would go belly up in Vietnam, though with how amazing Vietnamese coffee is.
Yeah, but the thing is that in these sorts of places they're seen as middle/upper class food. I'm from the Philippines and McDonald's is the sort of store you go to if you've got college educated parents in comfy middle class jobs. Less well off people just go to local, family-owned stores, if anything at all. And McDonald's and Burger King are far more popular here than they are in Vietnam.
Vietnamese food is my favourite. It's tastes good, there's a lot of variety, it's healthy, filling, etc.. I would eat it every day if I didn't have to drive 30mins away.
Wow Vietnamese are actually smart! Don't give your money to faceless companies who pool all their money to the top 1% who are unhealthy. Support your locals!
The problem more I think is american perception as well. Japan and Korea have a bit of an american fascination with both countries receiving relief support for decades despite having rocky beginnings so eating American fast food is kinda like eating like americans (this is a general deduction from family and personal experience in Korea.) China honestly just likes chicken and most fast food push chicken harder there for success, Vietnam on the other hand has more adults, young and old that aren't used to american culture and probably aren't interested or as fixated on it.
I'm an American expat living in Saigon for the past 6 years: 1) Mc D's is expensive compared to local food and more of a luxury, not a convenience...some just buy coffee and sit outside and talk for 2 hours 2) There are so many options for great local food in Saigon as well as a variety of unique, small-run international options for more affluent Vietnamese and for expats/ And, outside of Hanoi and Saigon, most of VN is rural with locals who spend their money more carefully and wisely 3) The local food like banh mi is faster and everywhere 4) There are cheaper fast-food chains like Lotteria that the VN like better and there are more of them 4) KFC does pretty well because Vietnamese love Fried Chicken, not hamburgers. Good people, good taste!
Nah, mcd's is not that luxury, it just doesn't taste good, so we vietnamese don't like it, easy and simple (compared to some local dishes thats kinda true but not really)
@Godon Gurando is another T-800 OK subway is the worst lol. They are not that tasty compare to our banh mi and those sanwiches are expensive as hell. I tried it once out of curiosity and no more subway for me. Wouldn't want to throw my cash out of the window like that

On the other hand. In the Philippines, a fast food chain called jollibee is the most popular fast food restaurant In the country, more popular than McDonald's.
Yes, they are. The Vietnamese just can't afford it. For the ones that can, they are even willing to pay 3 to 10 more to eat at McDonalds. There are 17 McDonalds built in just 4 years. ua-cam.com/video/y4nPWz4aONY/v-deo.html
Americans just can't handle that other nationalities don't like their food and drinks. I'm Australian, and I've heard SO MANY Americans call us stupid and uncultured because we effectively chased Starbucks out of most of the country. Our local coffee is much cheaper, healthier and tastes better, but yeah sure okay keep believing that Starbucks is better Americans. We who learned from the Italians (home of the espresso) know nothing
I live in Ho Chi Minh... You can literally grab a filling and absolutely delicious fresh sandwich from pretty much any street vendor within a few mins of ur home for $. 5-$1.... Whereas Mcdonalds price their burger meals at around $4 and you still feel hungry after... Vietnamese food is delicious! McDonalds, meh!
I wish it had failed here in Europe. The small local restaurants that give towns so much character are having their business taken by chain restaurants from America. People visiting the towns eat at chain restaurants because they already know the menu, instead of trying something new and exciting with a local restaurant. Can you imagine, visiting a new and beautiful place with so much interesting cuisine to offer, only to eat at McDonalds? But that's what tourists do now. That's why chain restaurants are strategically placed in places with a lot of tourism, to leech tourism revenue from the locals and send it back to their corporate offices in America. As if they didn't have enough money, they have to steal it from other countries. Then, the one I really don't understand is Starbucks. Starbucks is an American coffee business that sells "European"-style coffee in the U.S., so why would they open stores IN Europe?! It's insane to me when I see American tourists going to Starbucks in droves when there's a genuine local coffee shop, the thing Starbucks tries to emulate, right across the street!
@James- I can see where people would want to do both. Traveling can be disorientating, so retreating to something familiar after you might have been lost for 4 or 5 hours has value. Once I found my hotel and got familiar with an area for a bit then I would venture into new places.
Compared to their local food, fast food cannot hold a candle especially in a country where you can find delicious food literally in almost every corner at a cheap price. I can't wait to visit Vietnam again.
Just make sure to go to a good vendor, beware of bad ones, there’re everywhere. If you can, try and ask some local Vietnamese the next time you visit for food shops around the area they’re from, they’ll know what’s good what’s bad. Also, food in the outer city (in the locals) are much cheaper than in the inner city (just make sure to have a Vietnamese friend with or know some vietnamese before hand)
When in vietnam i want to eat their local food, not western food. Vietnam has a very good local street food. western countries should not try to change that.
true but Japan is more influenced by American culture so that's fair they got a nice balance actually, tho it's funny that they actually order KFC for christmas dinner as a tradition
I agree they're more influenced by American culture but that tradition at eating at KFC is limited. Out of probably hundreds of friends (I live in Japan) I know maybe 2-3 that have done that. KFC is good, I've eaten it like 1-2 times since I moved here 4 years ago, but expensive compared to other food and it doesn't match that higher price with higher quality. (Even though it's most definitely higher quality than American KFC)
Fu Fu fresh local beef, fresh ingredients with lots of veggie. ofc way more healthier than frozen and full of chemical beef with artificial flavouring sauce in a bun.
Ikr. American food such as burgers and pizzas heavily rely on fat and salt for their appeal, whereas Vietnamese food actually have tastes, nutrition, and flavors that our bodies crave. So, why would Vietnamese eat that American crap?! That's like trade in a new red convertible Ferrari for an old Chevy Vega. LOL
And taste, and nutritional value, and the sense of being well-fed/nourished .. Also, burgers and fries are hardly appetizing sensorially compared to, say, a bowl of steaming pho - pho looks better, smells better, feels better on your skin and mouth due to the warmth of the broth. Really surprised the fast food chains have not folded completely yet as of now.
Vietnamese here. There is just no comparison between the value one receives from our local fast food vs other international fast food. I can get a bowl of phở with freshly prepared beef, crunchy breadsticks, herbs, and egg for less than $2. It's an affordable hearty meal that won't raise your choresterol. If I went to a McDonald's, the cheapest set probably costs around $5, and it wouldn't even be enough food to make me full. Vietnamese service is fast. In those other restaurants you would have to wait in line and then wait for food, while as at a local restaurant you can just shout your order, take a seat and wait till they bring it to you promptly.
our loca food is so tasty and we don't need any foeign food which may not match our taste. In my case, I go to KFC if I want to enjoy ice cream - so cheap.
blahblahboii it is not we are poor idiot it is because these fast food ar not good for health and our local food is just way much more fit with our tastle i would pay much more if fast food deserve it but it wasn’t

Europa Man I am confused: what is MGK PS: the reason why Banh My in our country is so cheap is that banh my is ubiquitous there( in America it’s hard to find such kind of bread so those who sell Banh My have to make it themselves). The second reason is that our meat is cheaper( this is because our way of hanhdling meat is not as sophisticated or “civilized” as you guys do but to me, a Vietnamese, it’s harmless). Finally, it’s all about profit. Take it like this: you can easily live on 200 dollars a month in Vietnam, but this is not the case in America. As a result, those who live in America have to raise the price of Banh My in order to make more profit
There are 17 McDonald's in Vietnam and 13 Burger Kings. Doesn't sound like they are doing too bad, especially considering a meal is equal to 1 or 2 days pay for many Vietnamese.
@@RedRider1600 the thing is, i tried Burger King twice. I thought they had good burger or someshit but I regretted right after I have the first bite. KFC is way better.
Hoàng Linh Nguyễn So eat KFC. Asians love KFC. The Chinese love McDonald's, but they love KFC even more. American fast foods is not just hamburgers. Try Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.
American fast foods are not doing as well in Vietnam as in China, Japan, and Europe because Vietnam is still a poor country. A McDonald's meal is 1 or 2 days pay for the Vietnamese. Most Vietnamese make less than $7 a day. Many make only a few dollars a day. Imagine if a McD's meal cost $150 in the US, which is a day's pay for Americans. How often would we be eating at McDonald's? How popular would McDonald's be in the US if a meal costed $150? But still even with the relatively high prices, they are doing well enough. There are 17 McDonald's and 13 Burger Kings. Who knows how many Pizza Huts, Taco Bells, KFC's, Starbucks, etc., are in Vietnam. If it was really a failure there wouldn't be that many. 17 of 1 restaurant is still a lot, especially when you consider how expensive it is for them.
Wavemaker sorry! Many people can afford it! They spend 4-5$ for bubbles tea every day! But burgers are just no no, Maybe once a month but not for every day! Banh mi is tastier for us! KFC, Pizza Hut and loteria are doing just fine!

Elsiskk I traveled in Vietnam for a month, and partly agree that Starbucks are always filled with Korean and Japanese XD. It seems easy to answer that cuz they dont know Vietnamese . The restaurants located in tourist area in Hanoi and HCMC are more expensive than the street vendors, but you have to learn some vietnamese words to try the latter :D . To be honest, banh my(and kebab) is much better than Subway sanwiches, but in guide book you can only get one of 25K(not 10-15k lol).
Zenbeach Traveler Not really. The US won every major battle, and most of the small ones. The South Vietnamese lost against the North who were backed and supported by the 2 largest communist countries of the day. The US was not in the war when the war was lost in 1975. There were actually 2 wars. The first one ended in January of 1973 with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords. The US left when that war ended. Most US combat troops were already gone in 1971. The withdrawal started in 1969 when President Nixon was elected. He won the election by promising to turn over the fighting to the South Vietnamese, bring US troops home and end the war, which was what he did. The commies reneged on the peace treaty and restarted the war after the US pulled out. South Vietnam lost the war in April of 1975 with the fall of Saigon. Don't be an ignorant moron.
I have been to Vietnam many times and stay between 3 to 9 months each time. Every time I would walk past a McDonalds or a KFC they would be very busy with Vietnamese customers, so it seems they are popular there. When I want fast food I would go to Vua Banh Mi and have one their delicious Banh Mi as they have many types on their menu and every one is so good. I have been waiting to go back to Vietnam since I had to cancel my trip there because of the CV19 outbreak. One of the first things I will have is a Banh Mi from Vua Banh Mi. However I do avoid Vietnamese street food and a Vietnamese friend told me if you really want to get sick eat street food. I walk past them and stuff is left out in the open and flies on it and exhaust fumes from the heavy traffic stuff that should be kept cold out in the open. I love Vietnamese food, but no thanks to street food.
Been living in Vietnam as an expat for 10 years, and this is very accurate. The Vietnamese are spoiled with choices, and the local food scene here is the most diverse that I ever saw in any Asian country which I have been to. My favorite VN noodle soup dishes are Bun Moc and Bun Mam (forget the popular Pho Bo). And there's a local wrap-roll restaurant called Hoang Ty - wherein the sauce is a mix of fermented fish paste and pineapple. Worth a try!
I was surprised when I saw Japanese and other southeastern nations people eat at Burger(which was on news by horse meat scandal in Europe just that days) in Istanbul instead of trying beautiful and delicious Mediterrenan kitchen.

I'm a Vietnamese and it's true that McDonalds and a few other fast food chains are total flops in Vietnam. Vietmameses grow up eating healthy food with a little amount of fat so that's one of the reasons why I think not many people go to places like McDonalds. Also, our homemade meals and traditional dishes like bánh mì & phở are so much tastier, healthier and cheaper than fast food. Just think about it, a donut smaller than my palm is even more expensive than a big bowl of phở. I don't see the point in spending a lot of money on something so fattening and unhealthy :D

Ngoc Ta Good point. Sometimes when traveling, I choose what I hope is the more hygienic fast food (over street food) option, even though at home I wouldn’t. Unfamiliar stomach bugs which don’t bother local people could really ruin your trip.
Among Asian cuisines, Vietnamese cuisine is considered one of the best. Freshness, flavor balance, texture, and temperature in Vietnamese cuisine are all well understood. The French have had a great influence on Vietnamese culture, but recently Vietnam's tourist industry has been booming; as a result, the food culture is becoming more diverse. Vietnam has a relatively long coastline for its land area, and most of the region is tropical. Food rots more quickly since it's so hot and humid, but with all that sunlight and water available, the local flora and fauna from both the land and sea actually provide plenty of food with a large variety of ingredients. Rain forests after all are huge reservoirs of biodiversity. Fast food chains in Vietnam have to compete with both the high quality, high quantity, and low prices of local food vendors. Restaurants that serve foreign food have an easier time appealing to tourists, who probably aren't traveling abroad just to eat fast food they could find in their home countries.

Yes, 1minute to 3. if a Vietnamese street fast food stall serves more than 5 minutes for a dish, he will lose the customer and must close the door. Vietnamese cuisine is really fast food, Mc donald is just slow food
Flash food :))
THIS. this is such a perfect response.
I agree. Just curious, where are you from?
lol yes, they are not fast compare to street food in SEA, and too expensive for people there
@@hansenyang4014 I'm from a city in a relatively poorer region in China.

I know VN people here in Australia been here 30+ years. They still refuse to eat western food. Won't even try it.
Totally agree, most of my family tends to find Western (specifically American) food to be either too bland, or too sweet.

Just make sure to go to a good vendor, beware of bad ones, there’re everywhere. 1$/1' banh my is better than 4$/almost 15' hamburger
A burger here in VietNam cost about $2, and you have to wait 10-15 minutes. The Banh Mi costs just under $ 1 and within 5 minutes

$1 is an expensive one in Vietnam. Most Banh Mi are only 50c
@Europa Man but some how we still healthier than 33% of the us obese population hmmmmmmm
Europa Man I am confused: what is MGK
PS: the reason why Banh My in our country is so cheap is that banh my is ubiquitous there( in America it’s hard to find such kind of bread so those who sell Banh My have to make it themselves).
Fake meat ? What is fake meat to you ? 1$ Banh Mi can get you a fine roasted pork belly Banh Mi with vegies. That is something you don't know.

Not really.

I have been to Vietnam many times and stay between 3 to 9 months each time. Every time I would walk past a McDonalds or a KFC they would be very busy with Vietnamese customers, so it seems they are popular there. However I do avoid Vietnamese street food and a Vietnamese friend told me if you really want to get sick eat street food. Been living in Vietnam as an expat for 10 years, and this is very accurate.
