The van is just a marketing prop. Visma, as a software company, are using this to promote the brand. The information they have in the van is the same every other team have at a hotel room. Sprint stages are always long because they're flatter compared to lumpy or mountainous stages therefore the distance is meant to hurt the legs so only the strongest get to sprint at the end! That's why all the Belgien "Sprint" Classics are really long, although the terrain in those races has changed over the last few years becoming increasingly lumpy. Today the Peloton rode exceptionally slow as a silent protest against the ridiculously difficult previous 2 stages that have already been declared the toughest opening stages in TdF history because coming in to the finish outside the organisations slowest estimated time really messes with TV companies etc!
About the round bottles, those bottle cages DO hold regular round bottles, so they can get neutral service bottles. The thing, tho, is that it's apparently more beneficial to have the empty aero bottles, so if they can they'll get the proprietary aero bottles.
All that Cav drama on the first day sure made him look desperate for coverage, but he is a showman and his entire salary for the year is about these stages and maybe that was rope-a-dope where he suddenly stuns the field in a sprint and gets the record.
Teams can use prototype product for up to a year before its on sale, if they apply for the UCI documents for it. Kask did this with their elemento helmet the year before it came out.
I think I heard today in the German commentary of the tour that a new bike/ frame has to be either already on the market or going to get on the market in the next 12 months after the event for it to be allowed in the race
Love the new daily podcast. Means I can get my daily TDF fix that isn’t as stuff as some other channels. Also WTF you didn’t give us a heads up about this TDF fantasy league thing. That’s sounds fun as ! Keep crushing it. Cheers !
Aero bottles 👍👍… they store better on a counter or on a fridge shelf.. they stack more efficiently with less wasted space between bottles.. rectangular with a width wedge saves watts.. it’s the bottle cages/holders that are going to be proprietary to the bottle…
It's a good point that aerobottles' biggest PIA is you can't stand them up to fill them or set them out on a table to grab. BUT, that doesn't mean they couldn't be designed with at least a flat bottom. Not as stable as round bottles with flat bottoms, but at least more stable than ones with pointed bottoms. A domestique can carry a lot of bottles more efficiently if they are flat, btw. I sometimes carry a spare water bottle in my rear jersey pocket and a flat aero one sits way more efficiently and comfortably against my lower back than a round one, same volume of water.
Tomorrow is going to be great. 3 races (1) breakaway race (2) GC race (3) broom wagon race. I think Almeida might go in the break for Pog to catch him.
I just enjoy these so much. I’m not subscribing to Peacock here in the U.S., so you lot are my primary source of TdF news and analysis 😁 I look forward to these videos each day!
I love this as well as the Lantern Rouge recap. I watch that and then this and pretend I have enough time to watch the race but it takes like 20 minutes instead of 5 hours.
re: the data van, as soon as I saw it mentioned on GCN, I went, 'oh yeah, like an F1 pit wall'. although F1 teams (well the bigger ones anyway) also have teams _back at HQ_ who get the live stream of data and are constantly running and updating models for pit / tyre strategies. It would be really great I think for the TdF to have similar information available to the broadcast. Also of note, the team radios in F1 are open if you have the right TV provider or F1 subscription ("Sky Q customers press the red button blah blah" which I'm sick of hearing as I don't have access to it but get the Sky sports broadcast on my local paytv channel).
Are the aero bottles more aerodynamic than round bottles or are they more aero than no bottles on the bike. The way they fill in the front triangle, I think they are more aero than having nothing there.
I can confirm the Trek SLR aero water bottle holder will hold a normal round bottle…I assume it’s what the Pros are running. The round bottles actually click in with a positive sound…So, neutral, teammate, opponent, etc will work.
what is Men's Ascent Aero Jersey. Because I don't know what that means for gains on the road bikes and does that mean it will work for all of it the flat and the claims also could you mention it on a never video of your please
The aero bottles are quite common in triathlon. Sometimes riders ride them completely empty and use other hydration methods. The bikes are more aero with the bottle on them than without typically. I imagine it's only Cav as it's benefit will be greater than weight when sprinting at high speeds. Whereas the other rides it is probably marginal in the peleton the whole day.
I remember messaging the Ribble-Weltite team back in the day over why they used circular bidons and aero socks instead of aero bottles and overshoes and they said it was due to race logistics. They were the original aero demigods, so if they didn't pick them then I can't see them catching on
I'm super up for a bottle redesign like this. But only if there's a standardized size like we currently have so that they can be shared. No proprietary bull**t please Trek. A few watts gained but I do think they look a lot better (preference) and that shape is actually easer to slot into a back pocket (D-Shaped). Bidons have gone through generational changes of the years, from those metal flasks in the 30's to the rubberized plastics we have now. Currently they're up for sale by Trek and sold out. So it'll only be a matter of time before they turn up online. I'm having a crack at 3D-printing and mounding my own design and making the design free for all. I think it's the way we need to go.
Just make sure you aren’t saying a hard ‘go’ at the end. It’s close to Yo-nahss Ving-eh-gaw. The ‘o’ sound at the end is similar to the ‘o’ sound we have in ‘gorgeous’, but shorter.
Those aero cages being used also accept round bottles; that’s what the side cut outs are for. I’m with Jimmi … by the end of the year they’ll all be using them.
12:20 it is actually forbidden to transmit live data from bike as far as I know. Btw not the first one to do that, I reckon Phonak did that back then 😮
they're on something these cyclists haha. Bini, Wout, Remco, Roglic, Jonas had some nasty crashes this year and they're back crushing it at the top level.
Loving the pod guys, really excellent. Kind of shocked you guys didn't pick up how historic it is that he's the first black rider to win a stage, not just that he's Eritrean, but that he's black in a completely whitewashed, hyper privileged sport.... Hugely significant day for the sport, but hey...🤷🏻♂
Go back to yesterday's comments wall and see I put Girmay’s name on there. EF is in a very good position they could send some up ahead and make the race very uncomfortable for UAE and Visma. Tom Pick is my pick in stage 4.
My race plan: Send Healy in a breakaway, most teams cannot afford the gap to open beyond the 2:21 minutes. If they bring Healy back, send Costa, when Costa is back to the Peloton, Powless time to go. Another good thing about tomorrow's stage is Jonas Abran… will push from the start because he wants the points given at the 50k mark. Stay in his wheel and let him do the work. I can't see any Sprinter rider going for it. Obviously, They won't do it because they will stick all riders protecting the yellow jersey like he's a 5-year-old child and that is exactly what UAE and Visma want. Control the pace of the race.
A big Fluff of the day goes out to almost all the commentators. The phrase " He represents all of Africa" is just stupid and racist. Africa is not a country it is a continent. When a white guy from say Belgium wins they never say all of Europe is represented! They stopped short of saying he represents all black people. Don't get me wrong I think his stage win today was great!!! But stop the stupid hyperbole and exaggeration.
Why can’t people just accept that they’re incredibly talented, once in a generation athletes. Cycling is the only sport where this is even a suggestion, and it’s tiring and frankly disrespectful to the level of training and effort that they put in.
First and foremost, they cannot because they have no proof and they would just be speculating (as you are). Its down to the UCI to catch the dopers - then it can be spoken about as the proof is there. Secondly, most people do not want to hear them ramble on about doping over and over again (they do enough rambling as it is).
I'm loving the Pro Show! Tony's been great, looking forward to seeing him again
The aero bottle cages can also fit round bottles. I saw photos on a stage preview somewhere 🤔
The Cannondale ones definitely can.
The Trek ones can fit both forsure
Gonna miss Tony for the next few days he's a cheeky lad haha

Dimension Data did something similar few years ago
As you haven't seen many Cube bikes about , i do believe they have a tour stage win. Well done Biniam.
Enjoying these Pro Shows... nice morning watches to get the day started. Keep them coming

Perfect pronunciation of Vingegaard :)
John has Vinegar or Tadpole Catcher for the win
its "ving-eh-go" not "vinna-go" but close enough

I'm not so much into race cycling but you make it enjoyable to watch and listen to this topic on the show. Thanks for your work
Lots of firsts at this year's Tour so far. So Happy for Biniam and Richard. As for Cav time is running out.
All that Cav drama on the first day sure made him look desperate for coverage, but he is a showman and his entire salary for the year is about these stages and maybe that was rope-a-dope where he suddenly stuns the field in a sprint and gets the record.
I’m loving this daily round up of the TdF. Thanks guys!
America's Cup and yacht racing changed enormously with the use of tech, and the cost increase to compete then knocked a lot of players out.
My daily routine is going to be, watch the stage highlights from the TdF official channel then jumping onto this, love it!!
Teams can use prototype product for up to a year before its on sale, if they apply for the UCI documents for it. Kask did this with their elemento helmet the year before it came out.
Wow, I sure hope they make that Van Rysel a lovely black/blue colour when it comes to market.
I wish Lidl partnered with Giant. Lidl Giant would have been a fun thing to say. But Lidl Trek is funny too.
I was already hyped for the Tour but you're making me double-hyped!! Great ep
I think I heard today in the German commentary of the tour that a new bike/ frame has to be either already on the market or going to get on the market in the next 12 months after the event for it to be allowed in the race
Correct, it’s a new UCI rule (Article 1.3.006)

Aero bottles 👍👍… they store better on a counter or on a fridge shelf.. they stack more efficiently with less wasted space between bottles.. rectangular with a width wedge saves watts.. it’s the bottle cages/holders that are going to be proprietary to the bottle…
The Trek bottle cage is also compatible with round bottles.
Girmay looked very comfortable winning. Of all the sprinters, he made it look easy
stage wins for DSM, Arkea and Intermarche, yellow for EF, green and mountain jersey for Uno-X. who would have guessed
Trek’s aero bottle cages also fit round bottles.

The trek cage works with round bottles not just aero ones

As a Brit living in Denmark, the best phonetic way of describing how to say "Vingegaard" is like "Finger-gore" (But with a V instead of the F) ;)
Not quite. Gård is like Emily said and Vinge is like vignette.
12:20 they never could get sensor readings from the riders as that’s forbidden by the UCI (just like in team cars) so it’s just tactical data

Emily's pronunciation of Evenepoel was pretty spot on!
Who would have thought that a podcast with no video footage of the actual tour might be the best way to keep in touch with the tour for free.
Try ‘The Cycling Podcast’

Also btw, Producer Emily is killing it!
@Emily your pronounciation of gård (gaard in English) is spot on but Vigne is pronounced like the same letters in vignette. If that helps.
Girmay went back to Eritea during/after the season. The team found out he didnt train (nearly enough) there. So they had a friendly chat....
Last stage could be a crit around eifel tower, that would be extra rad.
The new VR bike, Is ir like new protype runners being used in comp by pro's once they go on sale within 3months they can be used.
There’s rumors of rain here (Galiber) tomorrow also.
