My favorite part about watching 'Songs That Define a Guitarist' is seeing how many of the same songs/albums Pete and Phil pick! Also, "Stone Cold Crazy" is absolutely genius! It's a shame that Queen never did more songs like that.

Townshend's performances at Woodstock and Leeds are the reason I bought an SG Special when I became a (bad) guitar player. My pick for PT would be "Young Man Blues" from Leeds. Thanks, guys. Great episode.

Don't neglect Knopfler's solo albums. He has become such a great storyteller in his songs (no surprise, as he was an English major). Shangri-La is probably my favorite of his solo albums.

In truth, there is only one guitarist who has left me open mouthed at a live concert - I have seen so many greats, Clapton, Howe, Iommi, Mark Knopfler, Gilmore, Blackmore, but it is Randy Rhodes because I had never seen such a guitarist!

Great choices for Rory Gallagher! And I so agree with the comments on his soloing. While there are many very fast, very technical players who can amaze with their abilities, its the melodic choices along with the precision that really sets Rory's playing apart. His solos seldom feel self-indulgent-they feel organic to the music. Thanks again!

I'm pleased to see you guys together .. I enjoy watching your videos since I have the same interest in Music as you guys .. well almost same taste ..
Rory Gallagher is my favourite life time Hero when it comes to guitarist because he can sing unique, write songs very talented & compose the track into a unique style & he was also unique & RAW ..Now all those other guitarist can not do that ..
All Rory's albums are classics just as every track he created.
I love all the tracks of the Deuce album .. I would have picked "In Your Town" to define him because Thin Lizzy was highly influenced by that track .. it was recorded live by the way...
The style Rory developed by 1979-80 does not define him .. He change his band to a 3 piece to return back that raw energy .. all his albums define him . .

Since the time of the Covid 19 pandemic you have become my great reference for rock in general and progressive rock in particular along with the hard music of the 70s. I quite agree with your rankings and before buying a vinyl I watch your videos. They are big fans of Deep Purple, UFO, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Bad Company, Génesis (Gabriel), Yes, King Crimson, Camel, Caravan, ELO, Tull, Rush, Rolling Stones, Beatles (of course). Hug friend. Always enjoy these episodes. Great to see Knopfler come up and I agree Pete, as much as I love Telegraph Road it would have to be Sultans but I would perhaps suggest the live version from Alchemy. He has been recording solo albums every couple of years since 1996 and whilst Phil is correct they tend to be more folky there is still a lot of songs that sound like Dire Straits.

Throw Neil Schon in there with the guitar players Sammy Hagar has surrounded himself with. Must admit I like solo Sammy Hagar a lot and presume he’s the main player on those albums but it’s hard to know for sure. That is a great live album though.

Thoroughly enjoyable show Pete. I shall watch regularly now and back track over the previous episodes too. You and Phil are a great match for this (I followed Phil here). Looking forward to checking out the rest of your channel. For what it’s worth, from those I’m qualified to talk about, I’d pick: Bernie Torme “On Fire”, Rory Gallagher “Sugar Mama” (from “Live Taste” - I can taste his guitar and cabs at the beginning), Brian May “Brighton Rick” (Hammersmith 75 version with ‘Three Blind Mice’), Eric Clapton “All Your Love” (Bluesbreakers mono), Pete Townsend “Sparks” (original studio version), Mark Knopfler - “Twisting By The Pool” 👍

Great show this is a nice replacement for the guitarist corner (which I still miss). Phil Aston is a very knowledgable and nice guy. Its nice to see a mix of lesser and more well known guitarists showcased here. As a lover of 80s music especially I hope we see some more 80s players here, I would love to see Dave Meniketti discussed as he is underrated both as a vocalist and a guitarist. Vito Bratta and Lynch would also be nice to get a spotlight although I would expect that 99% would pick Wait so that might not be a very surprising guitarist to cover. Keep it up :)

I watch this series to learn about guitarists that I don't know much about. In this case, Bernie Torme. Thanks guys. You give me a great starting point. Wasn't Bernie a guitarist who was considered for Ozzy's band after the death of Randy Rhoads? Maybe I'm wrong...

Always enjoy this shows in that many song choices are not always the obvious ones that show off the guitarist. Interesting point about Brian May's Stone Cold Crazy riff being that no one else was doing at that time except maybe Tony Bourge. Well. Metallica covered both Stone Cold Crazy and Crash Course in Brain Surgery. Says alot about these 2 songs in the early 70s.
