    You know, I actually found the discussion about the chairs not only amusing, but also strangely fascinating! Who would have thought so much went into something so simple as a mass produced chair
    EDIT: Also as a Brit I want to expand on Drachs point of the British use of Hydrocarbons as weapons during 1940. Mass use of Hydrocarbons to burn stuff was not just limited to throwing 55 gallon drums at tanks using Catapults! It also included massive use of emplaced flamethrowers on the beaches the British even *thought* might be at risk. As in you land here, and ARGH FIRE.
    So as a Brit I will say to all you Americans... thanks for all the oil we put to incendiary purposes in that desperate year!!!!

    • @princeoftonga
      @princeoftonga Рік тому +6

      Also there was a thing called a flame fougasse. Basically 4-6 55 gallon drums half full of just about any oil product with some sort of explosives in the bottom. Bury them in a bank or tall verge or whatever with the openings aimed at the same point and you have a single shot anti vehicle flamethrower. Nasty.

    • @whyjnot420
      @whyjnot420 Рік тому +5

      My favorite British thing in this overall context is the Livens Large Gallery Flame Projector. For me, talk of emplaced flamethrowers without mention of it is like talking about the Earth's atmosphere without mentioning Argon. Sure it was very complicated and barely ever used because of this fact, but damn it is awesome... and utterly terrifying.
      (Argon only makes up about 1% of the atmosphere, so not much, but at the same time after nitrogen and oxygen, argon is the third largest contributor to its composition... just in case anyone was wondering precisely what I meant there.)

    • @TomFynn
      @TomFynn Рік тому +2

      In WWII one of the reasons why the Japanese would resort to banzai attacks even when ordered not to was that with American firepower and the Japanese refusal to surrender, it was either Death by Maschine Gun or Death by Liquid Fire. Many opted for the former. If nothing else at least you died in the open air and not some dark, stinking bunker.

    • @princeoftonga
      @princeoftonga Рік тому +1

      @@TomFynn interestingly some analysis indicates that the increased use of flamethrowers (either vehicle or backpack mounted) actually increased tendency of even the Japanese to surrender. If you look at the later battles such as Iwo Jima and Okinawa where flamethrowers were more common. proportionally more prisoners were taken than in earlier battles such as Saipan.

    • @TomFynn
      @TomFynn Рік тому +2

      @@princeoftonga Facing a flame thrower, I would certainly throw in the towel. But with the mindset of the Japanese soldier at the time, my guess would be that most would opt for the banzai charge. And most of those who opted to surrender would be killed by their own superiors, long before they were killed by suspicions and jaded Marines. But I have no hard data on this. Which made me think that I have never seen any study (out there, surely, but out of reach for the amateur) which details what the average Japanese grunt at the time thought. Gung-ho, Tenno Heika Banzai? I am only following orders? We gotta get out of here if it's the last thing that we'll ever do? I simply have no idea.

    I from the Postal Service after 34 years of service. I was involved with a number of maintenance programs at the national level and my travels took me into many USPS facilities. I seem to recall seeing those aluminum framed chairs in several larger post offices and I wonder if they came out of a GSA warehouse somewhere as ships were decommissioned.
    I've always thought the shock the British navy and public felt over the loss of the Hood was in some part due to the British media's constant use of the phrase "the mighty Hood". Call a ship " mighty" enough times in print and in the newsreels and people start to believe it. That also contributes to the myth of German superiority. Any ship that can sink the mighty Hood must be special indeed. The believers in all things German will remind us that it took most of the British fleet to put the Bismarck down.

    Very interesting. My question is: How many cupholders does the battleship have, and how does this compare with other countries' capital ships. I know Japanese battleships had just enough cupholders and no more, but the Kriegsmarine was famous for having too few, sometimes none at all. The Royal Navy, being consummate professionals, would not want their beer to spill in the middle of a fight, so I'm sure the cupholder issue was properly addressed in the design stage. But what about the French and Italians?

    I think I am missing something here. Ted Briggs said she was turning and her rudder is at 20 degrees on the wreck. The momentary heel against the direction of the turn is, as I understand it almost impercetible. Hood responded quickly to the rudder so we are looking at a mere few seconds in time. So Ted was feeling the heel towards Bismarck and the hull is now deeper in the sea and less exposed than before. What did I miss?

    I thought that HMS Hood had 4 steering positions the Conning Tower, the lower Conn which below it, the engine room and auxiliary position in the steering compartment. The steering engine is IIRC immediately against the bulkhead with the fore most 4" HA magazine and runs via the port shaft alley to the steering compartment.

    Drach, the US battleship fleet was stationed in San Pedro, it's not San Diego. Massive access to oil in the Los Angeles area.

    38:40 I have one of those chairs since I was 14, came out of a renovated school. A great investment, didn't cost me 1350 though lol

    I would love to lecture on New Jersey. However, I do not have a beard. Is that permissible?

    @55:14, I'm sure Drach meant Lexington at Coral Sea. Yorktown was NOT scuttled at Midway
