If I remember right Ashley was not playing during this part because she was filming in NY so Pike was in autopilot during the Sphinx Challenge so the moment Travis impaled her with Craven Edge it was a genuine moment of “oh shit, I just killed Pike and Ashley is not even here”
@@transientanus Matt on the other hand played it as an awesome heroic moment for Pike. She was saving her best friend (who was spinning off into a void and threw the sword back through the door trying to catch something).
I actually cried when Grog stabbed Pike. One of the most painful moments in the series. Also, the bard hurting a sphinx emotionally with a song is the most dnd thing in this show. It's really funny to me hearing the sphinx's advice to Scanlan being "Let love find you" knowing whose coming. Love will absolutely find him, and probably try stabbing him.
The main questions for whether a dragon feels threatened or at risk are: 1. Did they fly? 2. Did they breath on you? The big U did neither vs. Grog. Black Dragons love to play with their food.
As soon as he said, "Wound me," I was immediately thinking, _"Cutting Words_ or _Vicious Mockery_ is going to be the solution in the end." - I didn't expect Scanlan to make _me_ cry as well.
I really love the LoVM version of this challenge - and Sam's beautiful singing. If it makes you feel better Sam was a musical theatre kid before he became a voice director. The original was an ongoing fight with minions as they desperately searched various planar portals to find letters - the challenge being to figure out Kami's name. Fun challenge on Tabletop for the players but hard to land well in animation... not to mention costly in the time budget. This was a gold star alteration.
It could have been made a little more obvious, because a lot of reactors I've seen are left asking why they didn't let Grog keep fighting, but Grog was pretty badly hurt by the time Keyleth cast her spell, he just couldn't feel it through the blood lust (The CR folks talked about it during a watch along) Also, at one point you see Umbrasyl toss Grog above his head and snap at him without making contact, like a cat with a mouse. Once he stopped playing it would have been over. (See the moment he yelled "Enough" and blasted Kam against the wall.) Grog bought the party the time they needed to get away, but only barely. Another detail I think was neat, there's a blink-you-miss-it moment where, after Grog's first "big" hit with the blade that draws that fountain of blood? we get a wide shot and see how big that cut actually is, it looks like Umbrasyl nicked himself shaving, and it's like "...oh. Oh NO." Scanlan's song had no damned right being that catchy. He went for the 80s rock ballad, the bastard. It was stuck in my head for AGES. :D
It’s very easy to describe to a player how “you feel that, despite your massive wounds, you’ve never felt more powerful. Yet, it’s still not enough… you need MORE.” The player looks at their hp and decides that, from a role play perspective, they would stay and fight even though everyone else is trying to run. That seems much easier to convey in a ttrpg than a show. Especially since people can stop to say what’s going on instead of relying on viewers to pick up visual details or context clues. I think it would have helped to show Umbrasyl fight other experienced characters outside of the initial takeover of Emon and show how strong he can be before he finds Vox Machina. That way, when he’s effectively toying with them, it’s more obvious. Truth be told, I don’t know where that extra scene could be placed, but I figure it would help people less familiar with ancient dragons realize their danger more easily. Spoilers for this and next episode in the next paragraph, as a heads up. This was also the first and only scene where Grog got to use Craven Edge on a big opponent. Every other big enemy they fought he couldn’t even hit, and because of events next episode, this was the only real opportunity they had to show both its potential and its drawback. I almost wonder if they put the sword plot line in, then got to this point and realized they hadn’t done a lot with it, and so they had this as a last chance moment to show it off and didn’t think about the potential misinterpretation the viewers might have that Grog was winning. As someone who’s seen this entire campaign and loves watching reactions to the show, I remember seeing this scene and realizing how easy it would be to misunderstand it. It’s still a phenomenal fight imo, but I completely understand why people question the team’s choice to run.
the funny thing is, the silent treatment DOES work on craven edge. percy got the sword first in the campaign and he was immediately hands off when it started speaking to him since he was fresh off the whole demon posession and wasn't about to mess with anything else like that. he kinda just sat it aside for awhile while he tried to figure out what to do with the sword and after awhile of percy not responding, craven edge stopped begging for food and just went silent. it didn't start talking again till percy gave the sword to grog, which is when it started talking to grog instead.
Umbrasyll didn't use his breath weapon, or even really fly, he was very much playing with his food. Grog would have very quickly found that out once the dragon got bored
I actually looked it up so: Myths are stories that are passed down about how or why something came to be. Legends are designed to teach a lesson about a real person in history, with a few facts dramatically changed.
Hypest moment in the entire series for me, cranked the volume as it started. I wish the entire 22 minute episode had been just that fight scene, like how the original live play episode was just 3 hours of their most brutal combat yet.
21:37 I think it was changed so they could show only the two vestiges that will fit in this season and then look again next season to show the rest, since in the camapign Kam just gave them the full list at once (and they cant ask him anymore...) Also makes it more useful in general, since Scanlan the bard rarely showed it off in battle.
They are sparing some time letting Vex be good at the broom and bow right away. In the game she had to roll to keep balanced - until Percy build a seat on it
And she had to actually practice shooting from such an unstable, moving position. I'm sad we lost the breakfast target practice sessions of roast chickens flying everywhere
@@hhylobates4098 I guarantee you that magic key Scanman finds in Umbrasyl's horde is the mansion. We could still get that scene for another silly trick shot reason. Though, an arrow to the neck just might not be amusing in the context of the show.
Other commenters already mentioned this, but I give the Blindwave crew credit for picking up on this: no way Grog was winning that fight. Kraven Edge was making Grog more powerful but Umbrasyl is still an ancient dragon and Grog wasn't doing all that much damage to him. One thing worth mentioning - without Kraven Edge, Grog couldn't even put a scratch on Raishon. It's not to say that Grog (or anyone on Vox Machina for that matter) are weak. It's just that ancient dragons are OP to a ridiculous degree.
Sam would improv a few bars of a rewritten pop song everytime he used his bard abilities, which was fantastic ... but now to see what it looks like when he gets to collab on Scanlan Originals. Perfection! I'm assuming his inner theatre kid is loving it

@@baseballjustin5yeah, I really only speed it up during the fight scenes... When you speed it up during the role play scenes the emotional weight of some of the scenes just does NOT hit because it's moving so quickly.
@@rgractor Yes the man was real, but it’s the tale of him that makes it a folktale. His story is used to explain why there was a huge spread apple trees in the United States.
@@johnmichaelchance1151 oh yeah, there’s definitely a legend. But there’s no evidence of those other two being actual people, so I thought the distinction worthy.
He really did plant a LOT of apple trees though. Not so much the sort of apples we eat, but more the sort we make into cider. And he did it because at the time, if you could prove you were using land you owned it. So he planted trees, all over the place, over and over again, then sold the land that he now owned to settlers.
A Legend is based on some real truths, but over time has become distorted with each retelling (such as King Arthur) A Myth is a tale that wasn't based on any true elements but was instead meant to be a way to pass on wisdom , either helpful or cautionary (such as Pandora's Box) Folktales can be a blend of both but are more localised to a specific region or culture (such as Johnny Appleseed), unlike Legends or Myths which are more universal and widespread across multiple regions and cultures (such as Atlantis and the Great Flood, multiple cultures have those myths.)
I mean it's a change from the campaign because they don't have time... In the campaign, she had to roll for a balance check EVERY time she tried to fly until Percy made a seat to attach to the broom for her ... She also had to practice aiming her bow while flying on the broom... So yeah it wasn't as quick as a recovery as they are portraying on the show... She had to find her "broom legs" as it were.
I kind of had an issue with the fact that Grog couldn't wound the Sphinx, but then the dragon and sphinx fought, and the dragon kicked the sphinx's ass. But then Grog holds his ground against the dragon...
I think it’s like a Water beats Fire, Fire beats Grass, Grass beats Water type situation. Grog probably can’t do much against the protective magic of the Sphinx, as well as getting a small buff once he actually broke into some blood.
Yeah, it didn't play out exactly like that in the campaign.... But he still did absolutely accidentally skewer Pike on his sword.... That's the important part that needed to happen... How it happened exactly wasn't necessarily as important.
@@MoviesAndTvShowsAreSubjective I agree it's subjective and they were no doubt right to drop the show if this episode was bad to them. I also reserve my right to say that I think their opinion is wrong. Got nothing to do with them really, I just had an idea for a funny way to say it at the time of my comment.

A Legend is based on some real truths, but over time has become distorted with each retelling (such as King Arthur)
A Myth is a tale that wasn't based on any true elements but was instead meant to be a way to pass on wisdom , either helpful or cautionary (such as Pandora's Box)
Folktales can be a blend of both but are more localised to a specific region or culture (such as Johnny Appleseed), unlike Legends or Myths which are more universal and widespread across multiple regions and cultures (such as Atlantis and the Great Flood, multiple cultures have those myths.)
Of course, Vex picked up broom-riding quickly. She's half-elf.
Grog probably can’t do much against the protective magic of the Sphinx, as well as getting a small buff once he actually broke into some blood.
im pretty sure the pocket dimension the Sphinx took them too very likely had a role in its invincibility
To be fair, it's incredibly stupid to jump in front of a Berzerker in the middle of combat.
its also incredibly stupid to decide to wield a demon sword a vampire lord used to own.....
Yeah, it didn't play out exactly like that in the campaign.... But he still did absolutely accidentally skewer Pike on his sword.... That's the important part that needed to happen... How it happened exactly wasn't necessarily as important.
ah, the episode that made me drop the series.
What a truly rídiculously bad take😂
@@Epicdance001why? if someone doesn't enjoy a show then they should not watch it.
I love the show but it is not for everybody
@@MoviesAndTvShowsAreSubjective I agree it's subjective and they were no doubt right to drop the show if this episode was bad to them. I also reserve my right to say that I think their opinion is wrong. Got nothing to do with them really, I just had an idea for a funny way to say it at the time of my comment.
@@MoviesAndTvShowsAreSubjective In my opinion this was great episode and it seems really weird you'd watch until half way through season 2 of a show and drop it on a great episode. Not to mention the cliffhanger.
