I am 63 and have been swimming since I was a little kid, and had swimming lessons in Jr. High. I wanted to lap swim for fitness and because I absolutely love the water, so I signed up for adult swim lessons to learn how to swim better. I had a great instructor and never regretted it a bit. I swim 3 x per week but am thinking about challenging myself to swim every day for a month, like one of his other videos! By the way there is an elderly gentleman who looks about 90 yrs old that I see swimming laps! He is a great inspiration! I want to be 90 and still swimming!

try Total Immersion swim training . I took their seminar because it is a system based on taking non swimmer into lifetime swimmers.I mean they are not competitive swimmers for the most part but they can swim distances easily train for fitness, weight loss triathlon but not directed only to those seeking to become an Olympic sprinter .TI is the way to learn for regular people who want to obtain the skills needed to move forward to gain heath in an efficient pleasant manner. I love the feeling of being in water, the meditative aspect, the gratification of accomplishment. 😻 My mother was a swimmer, and was still teaching water exercise to a group of women in the pool at her condo 3 weeks before she died at 102. She swam a mile in the ocean just about every day going from her place to the pier and back. My hero. And I married a swimmer, so when he joined a masters team in our 50’s I did too. 😍 now I’m 77 and carrying on by myself.

I used to swim competivily in highschool. I had a love and hate relationship with it, but swimming competivly transformed me. I thankfully stopped competive swimming after highschool, but I still hit the pool for a few laps because it helps me feel good everywhere. More energy, better cardio, clear mind, back pain relief, and makes me feel younger.

Thanks for the reminder! I actually haven’t gotten in a pool in decades. I’ve been more of a kickboxing, Zumba, weightlifting, hiking, walking person. After suffering a concussion nearly five years ago, my symptoms are so severe, that I’ve literally laid around all day. I have moments when I can walk, or do Xi Gong, but without consistency. While my symptoms have improved, I’m now finding that nearly every attempt to be minimally active, causes some type of injury. It makes complete sense, because of having so completely inactive for so long. I’m so grateful for the reminder to take to the water! My community has a new recreation center, with a pool, nearby. I’m going to try swimming, because it will have the least impact, and I’m more likely to avoid injury.
To the benefit of the pool being Zen, and a place that greatly reduces sensory input, it makes me think about us all having initially developed in a private pool. 😉 I’m sure the sensation of being in a womb, has some healing value to us!
Thanks again for this video, because I forgot about swimming, when I saw similar videos a month ago. 🤕

A childhood drowning accident made me fear of water and not able to float. I always made effort to conquer it by not say no to water sport except when swim skill was essential. I also never had access to a pool (hate gym’s indoor pool). I just moved into a retirement community that has a good pool that only about 10 people use semi regularly. First time in my life i am able to use the pool 3/4 times a week. It was wonderful to be in the water, so calm and relaxing. I am using tools to learn how to free style. It doesn’t feel like a workout. I often use the post drill float to pray and thank God for giving me this opportunity to be comfortable in the water.

I’ve swam for fun for years. I’ve started using swimming as part of my weight loss journey in May. During the gym shut down, I started running long distance. After 3 months of doing distance running, my joints started popping. They weren’t painful pops, but I started having pains I’ve never had and didn’t like the long term impact that I think it would have. So as soon as the pool re-opened, I replaced my long distance/HIIT running with swimming. I love it and will NEVER go back to running. No body pains, great calorie burn, and it partners well with my weight training routine.

I just went snorkling in hawaii and realized I'm still pretty okay at swimming and will be joining the gym on Monday. It's the 1st thing since getting fat i feel like i can do and will be easy to stick with.

Hi Fares, this video‘s email notification arrived with the following wording: „...But did you know that it's actually better to swim a short workout 7 days per week, than it is to swim 2 or 3 longer sessions per week?“ , however, I did not see that this fact has been explained comparatively as to why it‘s better to swim shorter but more frequently in comparison to swimming longer laps 2/3 days a week. You clearly explained why swimming every day is good but did not do the comparison. Possible that I missed it and if I did miss it, please let me let me know where to find the answer to that question. Thank you for inspiring us all ! 🏊🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️

Great question! The frequency of swimming really depends on your goals. This video talks more about the general health benefits of swimming every day. If you're looking for elite performance, then there's no question swimming 6-7 days per week is optimal because you're trying to develop your feel of the water to your body's maximum ability. For 'most people', they're not looking for elite performance so much as routine, physical and mental health. Swimming everyday can be great for this. If you're limited on time, then absolutely swimming 3x/week can still yield great performance and health benefits. It's a balance. If you swim 'longer' you're more likely going to swim at a slower average pace. Swimming shorter workouts more frequency allows you to maintain a higher pace...if that's what you're looking to do.

Fares Ksebati Thanks so much for sparing your time,Fares! Appreciate it. I do 5X1,750m. (freestyle) and I feel just fine (let the muscles recover during the weekend) Sometimes I wonder if I shall split the total distance on 7 days of the week but then whenever I do less than 1,750m a day I feel I‘m not done. Anyway, my Y cancelled all classes this week and it‘s a matter of time they close the pool so my concerns today might be irrelevant soon... Stay safe.

Currently I am swimming 10x-11x per week for three months now (building up gradually from 4x per week). I am only swimming breast stroke and free style (also doing leg and technical exercises) and have some issues with recovery. Generally when i double dip, I do breaststroke in the morning (333m warm up, 666m speed, 1000m endurance by focusing on technique and remaining as high as possible in the water and around 200m warm down depending on time) and free style in the afternoon (333m warm up, 1666m pullboy normal speed, 666m pullboy speed, 333m free style with legs and around 200m warm down). Other days I alternate between freestyle and breast stroke (1333-1000m, followed up by alternating leg exercizes and extended pullboy - 1000m and finished with vertical kicking (dolphin and freestyle) or by relaxed swimming (breast stroke) with special focus on 15m dolphin with recovery swim. Backstroke I cannot do because my left ankle hurts from kicking inverse (I went to multiple physicians and they cannot find the cause) - which is a shame because that was my strongest stroke as a child (I even won some junior competitions and could swim for hours like that), and butterfly was never really my thing (I could never find the rythm of it ever and I am frankly neither good in it nor do I see the point when comparing it with the more efficient freestyle). Next to this I play football (European) 1-2X per week. Any tips (especially in terms of diet) how to improve recovery ? How do professional athlets recover (as far as I know they train around 30 hours (36km swam + dryland training) per week versus 12-16 hours of sports (around 20-22km + footbal) I am doing, so it must be possible)? I understand that swimming more styles would probably help, but that is not the tip I am looking for. How does a pure breast stroke or butterfly specialist recover (free style I can do even when my arms are sore just by pulling less strong and focusing on my frame, body position and rotation) ? Or is it a question of just getting used to it ? How long will that take (I am 36yo) ?
Also one final point: I am doing this to improve myself in terms of discipline and extend my endurance and pain threshold without injuring myself + I am having a blast every time once I have entered the water (I just feel good there).

Once you jump in you never wanna get out!!! Yes, I swim every single day, one hour. My pool is heated at 80 degree so I can swim anytime of the day, and I love the evening schedule for shade and no sun exposure, but some time I do the 2pm time. I am 70, no arthritis pain, no back pain ,sleep like a baby 8-9 hours straight every night and don't know what means insomnia. Swimming is a good remedy for those seniors and people overall who struggle with sleeping due to stress or aging. Nothing can slow me down, after swimming schedule is the one hour walking daily. The half day hiking on weekends is a piece of cake. The problem is I cannot find a workout partner to go along with my activities. I wonder why people prefer the couch and the big screen instead.

I swim 3/4 times a week and i never get tired of it because like any other sport it makes me feel better but also every single workout session is like a challenge to improve and swim better. Next year i wanna do my first 10k in open water and this is also a motivation. And as you say in the video, the best thing about swimming is that you get no injuries and you kind of disconnect from everything when you are in the water, it remains me about the sensation when i go to the cinema only that this is better because afterwards you always feel better, doesnt matter if the actors are good or not. Cheers!
