I love designer things but it’s so important to have a reality check now and again and remember we’re all over paying for the brand. When I buy designer stuff I try to imagine it without the logo or that it’s on the shelf in an outlet and think if I really like it for what it is and not just the branding and hype.

And I guess the people who really enjoy it are the people who get a vip experience because that's what you're actually paying for. Makes sense then that chanel doesn't want to sell online.

I used to work as a seamstress- it’s a very eye opening industry into how clothing and bags are made. Specifically I used to sew bags. Most bags, even leather ones, will have a headliner style foam layer and a a Cotten layer over that which will have adhesive on one side (the side against the foam layer). This is so as to insert hardware, like purse feet or twist locks, and then have the interior side of the hardware not rub against the leather lining side and show dents and imprints. But it will absolutely disintegrate like that if left in super hot and dry, or super humid and hot conditions (ie a garage or attic). We call it dry rot where I live. Generally, your bags in your room or inside your home will not disintegrate like that for several decades, or longer if they are well taken care of.

And this is why I use my Birkin as a work bag. For me, It's a bag. A beautiful bag, but a bag nonetheless. Their very purpose is to carry our things. Especially the Birkin, as the conceptualisation was for Jane Birkin to be able to fit everything in a bag.
Love them and use them. ❤️

Humidity and moisture can destroy a house in a short amount of time much less a Birkin. You have to take care of things. There is no such thing as an indestructible bag if it isn’t properly stored…I check all of my bags inside and out every couple of months and they are all stored painstakingly. My first round of designer bags I didn’t do that (this is years ago) and I destroyed some gorgeous bags without much effort 😬

I understand your love for handbags. I am kind of obsessed, too. Just love having them, playing with them--they really ARE like grownup toys. ha. I think vintage is a great way to go! I don't buy new, and never have--I have used Ebay (due diligence is always important, but I have found some wonderful sellers I count on and who always come thru) and love the treasure hunt. Figure if these bags have lasted as long as they have by the time I find them, and they're still in great shape then, it's worth it. There are so many great places to get vintage. He used leather as the stiffner, and the final stage of putting the black finisher on the edge, it ended up way too thick.
But the point is taken that it's mostly illusion that we're in love with.
It's the image of glamour and the imaginary lifestyle we think will descend on us by owning them.
    It's just material stuff.
The humidity caused structural breakdown of the bag. Eventually we all break down including houses.
But your bags won't be breaking down at that rate.
Wear your Birkin or Kelly to lunch at the Botanical. Make occasions for them. Enjoy them!

Really enjoyed watching his restoration - thanks so much for sharing the link with us. Excellent point about what could be going on "underneath" our vintage purchases 🤨🤔🧐 that otherwise appear okay externally. (Off topic - this could be a metaphor for us as well; externally we appear great, but inside, we're a mess.). Anyhoo, his USD estimate was probably based on a Google search of inflated resale prices, which for a pristine, store-fresh Birkin 25 in a desirable color & leather sometimes go for $30k USD. It's hard for most people to find out current Hermes retail pricing. Overall, I think the fact that he was able to restore the bag is a testament to Hermes leather quality.

Honestly- I started my collection in 2006 and the bag I got that year (17 years ago!) is still in perfect condition and the vachetta still smells like new. Same for an LV Vernis that I got in 2007- they are in amazing condition. I honestly would recommend to keep them in the dustbag inside their boxes. The leather hasn’t cracked, the canvas hasn’t cracked or warped. I think (my hypothesis) stopping them being exposed to oxygen and light prevents their deterioration. I’ll caveat that by saying that I live in a high altitude city - with minimal humidity in the air….

While not all bags are created equal in terms of quality materials and craftmanship, they're just bags and many are made in a very similar way that includes glue, cardboard, etc. A good reality check when one things about how to best spend one's money. The quality of the brand should speak for itself with or without a logo. That being said nobody should be paying an arm and a leg or treat it like a newborn child. That being said learning HOW to store your bag PROPERLY so it can last for a long time is still important. Jane Birkin wasn't obnoxious with her bags but she didn't "baby" them either.

Steve is amazing! He take forever to finish but he is really good! I live near by his shop! I’m not sure if the bag is real (the handle make me question, but it may be the storage conditions that deteriorated the handle maybe)… but I believe if you left any bag is a bad weather it will get ruin! I’m actually amazed that that leather was not beyond repair! We need to be realistic with our bag. It’s just leather!… with some cartoon inside! 😂😂

I have decided to have a few " useless" bags i consider "art" or i just love due to the colour, these are now 3 and then ca 2 chill every day designer bag and one business designer bag. I would use bagcharm and twilly to fresh up the design and make it work in the different seasons. Then i would hopefully have more money to be social, go to spa and feel less stress about aging...

The Birkin shown in the video was not properly stored leading to its disintegration, I was very shocked too at how badly it’s lining crumpled! However, Jessie, you needn’t worry about your bags as you take of them well, though I agree with you that we should really be using our bags. I am a culprit of hoarding handbags 😅

I think that may be something they use to keep the bag from losing structure? I don’t know how to make a bag, but that would make sense - leather can soften over time, so they may put something in the bag to keep it from sagging.

  • @tara_nguyen
    @tara_nguyen Рік тому +2

The leather do need to be touch. The oil from your hands will condition it. Otherwise, it'll dry out. That's why Vuitton vintage vachetta leather is always cracked.

It's a testament to Hermes' leather that it's even able to be restored from that condition. I think you can at least rest assured that your current Hermes pieces will last. All of the manufacturers have some sort of stiffener layer for their more structured bags so I'm not surprised about that.

I want to downsize too. I still have a handful of Chanel bags I could sell. But it’s the price increases that scare me into thinking I’ll regret it one day. But in the Hermes side, I still want to grow my collection. Not even that video can deter me, because I know how I care for my bags and I would never let a bag get to that state.

Bags esp luxury bags are meant to be used if possible constantly and taking good care of the bag and enjoying the bags when carrying them. Taking various precautions like putting inserts to keep the interiors. clean and the bag in its original shape and also to put twirly on the handles of Hermes Birkin or Kelly for aesthetics and at the same time to keep the handles in good condition.
By not using the bags constantly make it the most worn and best purchased bag.
Hence no pt having so many bags but end up not using them often and subject them to external environment that can damage the bags beyond repairs which is costly.
To me js have a few bags that you constantly will reach out and not having the risk of the luxury bags being exposed to the all types of environment eg humidity and fungal growth.

    Hi Jess
Thanks for suggesting that restoration video, I enjoyed it.
However, each and every video I have ever watched on how to spot a fake birkin, has stressed that the feet are hammered, not screwed. In fact, they all clearly say that if you can just turn the feet, let alone totally unscrew them, that means the bag is certainly a fake.
I have no idea what the inside of a real birkin would look like, but I have cut up many fake bags to harvest the hardware from them, and their inside look like the bag in the video.
It would be interesting to hear the opinion of an expert, hopefully this lady has not paid $5000 to fix a fake, thinking it was real.
On a different note, perhaps you would enjoy watching another similar UA-cam channel. It's called Hahn Atelier. He is a Korean leather maker who re-design old damaged designer bags (or just old style bags) into new, beautiful, up to-date models. Most of the bags he receives for re-modelling are LV iconic bags. He recently remade an old speedy damier ebene into a stunning tote bag, with new handles, shoulder strap and a magnetic closure.
He also makes bags and wallets from scratch. His videos are made in ASMR style, no talking, just relaxing music and actual sounds of hammering etc.
Thanks again for another interesting video Jess.

The inner lining of the bag that was removed and tossed... it's too smooth. It doesn't look like goatskin (which is was Hermes uses inside of Birkins).

      @ginotanabe4598 Рік тому

I agree with you too. Even though it was dirty, there was no texture to the lining. And chevre (goatskin) has texture. He lined it back with lambskin and he told me that was the client's request. :)

Anything that cost more than the bare cost of an item is “luxury”. We pay for the Logo. Even in the jewelry industry, the cost of a new chain will be at 52% more than the cost of gold material in the chain. But we pay for the “craftsmanship” to make the chain. Even tho the chain is machine made.

To be honest we don’t know the specific conditions that the Blue Jean Birkin was stored in but clearly it wasn’t stored properly. An LV sales associate told me not long ago to keep a desiccant moisture absorbing pouch (similar to the ones in vitamin containers) inside the bag and not to use stuffing inside. So keep the humidity down and generally good air flow. . . . I live in a dry climate and I include the desiccant pouch in my stored bags but I still stuff them. If I lived in a damp environment I would be doing more.

I am not a Birkin owner but I’ve had a lot of designer handbags. That bag looked fake to me. 15$ would have authenticated it and that question would be answered. Several commentators on that video thought the bag to be fake also and one was an authenticator. I did restore a vintage Chanel that had pieces falling out of it like the video. What ever lining they used just fell apart. The Japanese resellers call this “blow powder.” It was gross but it’s clean now. I don’t think it was worth 30,000 if it was real.

@@JessiestyleI don’t know. I know this is from awhile back, but I watched that video as well and took a few screenshots. There’s a few details that are quite often wrong on even the best of the best fakes- the pearling of the pins and the saddle stitching. The way both were done on that bag was completely consistent with authentic Hermes. The main thing that gave me pause personally was the blind stamp. Context matters a lot too though and the client having owned the bag for years and been willing to pay $5k for the work done lends some amount of credibility to at least the fact the client believes (or knows) it to be authentic.
