I always wondered if there are kaiju which have anthropophobia. Like, if humans can be terrified of creatures they dwarf, maybe they're not the only ones and maybe a human might be terrifying to a creature several times its size?

That one seems a bit up in the air. Mythbusters tried it out once, and found the elephant they were working with seemed pretty apprehensive of the mouse, but it was pointed out that this was a white lab mouse, which elephants don't see that often, so it might not have been mice in general.
In any case, a mouse can certainly scare a much larger human.

I never thought that red knees venom would be weaker than a typical house spiders venom.
But also educating everyone about spiders is really important, i honestly wish the first spider I picked up wasn't a jumping spider and was a tarantula like a red knee due to how generally docile they are, but of course jumping spiders has helped quite the number of people get over their fear of arachnids! If anything they should change the Tarantula in animal crossing to a OBT 😂

Being into arachnids most of my life I've dealt with so many people that are "arachnophobic" or "hate spiders" for no reason. I had this fun situation with a horse girl in school and about how she hated spiders and they were scary and had to mention it because I had a print out on my binder of my passed away spider stevie that I had for a long time. I saw she had Horses on her binder and immediately told her I was terrified of horses (which I am scared of horses since I fell of a horse as a kid and shattered my arm and also had a different horse rip a chunk of my hair out). She said my fear was ridiculous since the horse didn't mean to break my arm and I proceeded to tell her that her fear is ridiculous since no spider wants to be anywhere near her.

Good point! I find it interesting that arachnophobia is almost socially accepted because "Spiders scary, yo!", whereas fear of horses or dogs is generally considered "silly". In reality, a dog can be much more dangerous than any tarantula ever could. But then again, phobias are by their very definition irrational so logic doesn't really apply to them.

I have two kids and have been teaching them that spiders aren't scary but my oldest is in kindergarten and has been having conflicted knowledge from other kids saying they are "gross" "scary" etc. Yesterday my kids followed a stink bug and were telling the neighbor boy not to squish him and that he won't stink as long as we don't touch or poke him. Your channel absolutely has an impact, though. If not for you, I genuinely think I'd still be near-terrified of spiders, and 100% would not own the two tarantulas that I have now. I've experienced similar issues whenever I tried to join Animal Crossing groups and trying to debunk and misunderstood facts about tarantulas, especially the Brachypelma portrayed in this game. Like I try to be accommodating towards people are arachnophobic and maybe I'll tell a few things what makes them not scary, but I know that isn't enough. I don't show pictures anymore after I've gotten into arguments with people saying what I say doesn't count for just because I didn't own a tarantula back then, and that doesn't qualify me to have a saying in things, which I think was insulting.. I research tarantulas on a constant basis and I started my education 4 years ago just to get my first 2 last year. Seriously, I appreciate you doing a video to debunk the myth behind these misunderstood critters.
I run my own Discord group and sometimes I display my tarantula images on there. I use the spoiler tag so that people can navigate photos without freaking out. It seems to be helping but having to do this through mobile is rocket science....

I used to be absolutely terrified of spiders. When I was a very small child (about 1.5 y/o), I almost picked up a black widow. My mother yelled/screamed and according to my Grandmother, that terrified me beyond terrify. From that point on I was horrified anytime I saw a spider. When I got into my 30s, I was just sick and tired of being afraid so I got my first tarantula, Rose Hair. It took me a while but after taking care of her and learning I am no longer afraid. Now, I have 7 and I would love a whole lot more! Thank's Kat for the videos, they're great! :-)

I heard that in Animal Crossing you can even turn your island into some kind of "tarantula island"... This involves deforestation, I think. What are your thoughts about that (if it's even a thing)?
Anyway, after that, I did not expect this degree of accuracy to the natural world from this game!

    • @sylph4596
      @sylph4596 3 роки тому +5

That's because of the way that insects are set to spawn in the game. If you have no flowers, no trees and no tree stumps then insects that spawn on those can't appear on the island. Leaving only ones that spawn on the ground, tarantulas/scorpions, or ones that just fly in the air without needing flowers around them. It's not meant to be accurate to real life, just the way that tarantulas are set to spawn on the ground so you can make them more common by getting rid of everything else.

    Relatable and informative :D.
I once posted a screenshot of the L. parahybana in Planet Zoo to one of their discords and got a trigger warning too. I complied and added the warning/spoiler tag, but I also felt the same way. I ended up writing a big blurb about how these animals are misunderstood/fragile and how the number of people with medically significant arachnophobia is probably much smaller than most people think. Thankfully the mod in that place actually agreed and said they would look into it rather than ban me.
It's just absurd how a place for communicating about a game with these animals already in these games would need a trigger warning. Gore or nudity I understand, even if I'm not affected by seeing it, but these are just animals. They share this planet with us and are just trying to live their lives 😣

One day I hope to get a red knee, Arizona blond, or the rose hair one (science names are slipping me rn) my mom looked at me like I was crazy when I was excited at seeing the one at the pet store, it looked like a sling, probably the size of a quarter or silver dollar.

My fear of spiders comes from when my dad brought me to see arachnophobia in 3d when it came out when I was 7. It has gotten better by watching your videos. I no longer fear spiders or tarantulas. If I come across one in daily life I can observe it or relocate it safely outside. 🙏

Tarantulas don't "chase," but there i a legend about it that people keep sharing. The huge Central and South American huntsman spiders do something like chasing, the species colloquially called the Brazilian walking spider. They are incredibly docile during the day and are easy for us to spot when they fail to get back to the trees to hide during the day. There's no intention to bite or harm it's just a really ineffective hiding instinct. They are generally arboreal, but hunting often includes running around at ground level at night. When threatened, they try to escape. Their method of escape is up, even if it's climbing the very thing that threatens them. So hilariously, they will try to climb the nearest thing to get away and that is sometimes... you. They were once considered the world's largest spider, so this usually invokes a terrifying experience in the person being climbed. Freaking out while being climbed by such a large spider is a good way to get bitten. No one ever accused these spiders of being particularly smart, but their behavior gets misinterpreted very easily. These spiders are actually edible and are so docile that kids are known to play with them during the day. It's not really play for the spider, though. They are just lethargic and trying to endure the abuse to get away and find a better place to hide. Poor spiders. Lol

I went to visit my daughter and her family in Santa Ysabel California one time a few years ago. We went out one day and when we came home we were greeted by a beautiful big tarantula on her front door! It was beautiful! I enjoyed its visit. We all went into the house and left it on the door. Later it had moved to a post on the front porch then it disappeared. I have no idea what kind it was but I was so happy!

Those animal crossing groups are ridiculous. I was muted/half banned because I commented on a post that someone posted the pioneer women table set. I just simply commented and said “oh my mom loves pioneer women! I tagged her in this too’ I never thought that it looks like the table set in the game” a few weeks later I get muted, because I said the name brand of the item. There was no rules, but they tried to indicate they had a good reason. It was weird. I feel your “getting banned”
Love your videos! Love animal crossing 💕

Great video! I grew up keeping Ts. Got my first one in 90s (G.porteri) and I kept them ever since (+ scorpions). As I learned the hard way people are super afraid of them but there is literally no reason. Even my OWs are good. It`s all about respect. I give them naturalistic enclosures suited for every individual genus and I do a ton of research to keep them in good condition. I don`t handle them. Many people are like: "How can you even sleep?" or "They will kill you." No they will not. They want to be alone, secure and undisturbed. Even the infamous OBT is 99% time likely to retreat into the safety of its burrow. I love my arachnids and I find them to be fascinating.

I've heard from some keepers and in my own experience that behaviour and housing can correlate a lot. Give em the correct environment and they tend not to be defensive
