  • A slide show of my USB powered Walnut Wonders computer speakers with Mark Audio CHN-40 (2.5 inch) drivers. I am $112 all in on this project including the reclaimed walnut board. No filters/crossovers needed folks. You could save $25 with cheaper wood, binding post, and drop the USB connector with little to no loss in sound quality. These little drivers are amazing.

    Recording Equipment:

The speaker's placement is about 20 inches apart, and 20 inches from the mics.
Source volume at 50%, Speaker volume at 75%
The spectral analyzer screen shots were pink noise recorded 3 inches from the center of the driver and 3 inches from the slot port.
    Early Impressions and Comments:
Can a $13- 5 volt(1.8watts into 8ohms) chip amp drive good drivers with just USB power? Can a single full range driver sound good without filters? The answers are a resounding YES!!! The amount of SPL's and Dynamics that I'm getting from these is shockingly good. Clean midrange and highs. Adequate bass for near field listening. With my passive prototypes connected to my Topping MX3 amp with 38 watts per channel they held their own even better.
If this is the low end of the Mark Audio line($20 each), I definitely foresee some future Mark Audio projects soon.

Cool build! Thanks for sharing! About to dive into some grills for my 2tdx towers thanks to your other video.

Thanks! Keep them thin and round the edges near the tweeters to prevent edge diffraction.

@@DonnieMulligan going with 3/8 mdf backer board and the screw to magnet on the speaker, since I didn’t put them in prior to veneer, then hot gluing a magnet to the grill. Putting in some metal between the grill and the fabric to protect it from the kiddos. Will try routing the edges for the diffraction , thanks for the tip and let me know if you have any other suggestions. I really appreciate your work, i have all the parts to build the Gr research towers and center just need time to do it! Your videos are great, thank you Donnie!

The big things with grills seems to be to not have any flat edges near the tweeters. Rounded edges only to prevent edge diffraction. I am still a newbie at this but a lot of online folks agree it is sound science.

I'm using a $2 version of that amp to drive a pair of bookshelves. They sound great.

The Drok amps are surprising. I found two for $13 on Amazon. The power on/off and volume knob make it a no brainer!

Great job. Inspiring. Is the PAM8406 based amp, really stereo?

Yes, I confirmed it while testing connections. 5 watts stereo in 4ohms. About 2 watts in 8ohms. These Drok amps boards are nice. Has a Power On/off/ volume knob, no hiss at max volume. Very stable. Great little 5V amp board.

I am happy how they turned out as is. Adding a sub was never part of the plan.
