The "scent" you are talking about is just a mix of animal droppings and rotten food unfortunately. They do clean the area thoroughly everyday, but it's just not enough with how many tourist around. Source : im a local.

Ahh right! I expect the monkey poo and bird poo but not the food/garbage. I saw them cleaning the stairs. Unbelievable how much trash is left behind!
