They ask the occupation question in part for insurance/workers comp or third party liability stuff, but mostly so providers can rule out or account for occupational safety hazards and diagnose and treat accordingly. If they see you’re an office worker with back pain they might ask you about like if you sit in a chair all day and give you recommendations to try a different/better chair or try standing up more before other means of treatment. Versus if you’re a construction worker who comes in with wheezing and coughing up blood they might ask you questions related to your jobs or do different tests to see if maybe you came in contact with or regularly work with something toxic that could be causing it first. Not to be a dweeb about it though, I just had to end up explaining this to patients myself when they get annoyed they were being asked about it and accused us if having nefarious intentions
