OTT is a lovely preset! I highly recommend to anyone to learn the device and its parameters to really get its full potential. Those threshold bars are super useful for fine tuning the amount of gain reduction/boosts on each band. Cool vid, Ahee.
Thanks for being the first one to actually do a solid tutorial on every part of OTT! As far as your Ableton Racks go, even though they were made in Live 9, I'm assuming they'll work in 10 just fine right?
Very helpful for someone coming to this from FL...The one thing I don't understand why the default setting on both the ableton version and the plugin version is the amount at 100%...almost nothing sounds good at that amount.
Louder != better, when comparing any FX, specially compressors dont forget to check LUFS meter - to have before/after make same loudness, that way you can compare without brain tricking you with louder=better
vacuum regular totally true, tho after Developing an ear for it I’ve also realized that the gain differences are a huge part of the process, especially how it ties into how my templates with limiters on the groups work. ✌️
6:10 would be cool to automate the the time dial all the way down to get that smear effect during a drum fill then back to unity on the 1 just to have that smear effect for a sec. But ya I imagine it being used on a drums here on there just as an effect real quick.
Actually I did use OTTs on some vocal the other day and I'm leaving it there cause it sounds great. Of course, it is inside a vocal chain where I had cut most of the bass out, plus it's one of those autotuney robotic chorusey parts that kinda sound well when squashed up like that. So yeah, even some vocals may benefit from properly tweaked OTT
I rarely use OTT. But I find that having a clear goal when using it helps alot. What do I want to enhance? More punch? Less punch? And so on :) Great tutorial 👍
I'll adjust the 'high' output gain down to the same level as the mid output. OTT can add a weird filtery sound in the highs so that helps dial it back a bit.
I love your videos. I like the fact you are sharing some really good information and do it clearly and in a way that I can use it myself. I bought your Skrillex template too and the racks. The template is brilliant and I am just starting to dig into it a bit more. Thanks for your work!!
It's not very informative to A/B the effects of multiband dynamics on individual elements without gain matching the output. Of course when you throw an OTT on your channel strip and whack up the output gain to +13db it's likely gonna sound "better"... that's just because our ears are attuned to prefering loudness. At this point you're not fairly comparing the actual dynamics processing. I do understand the context: you're using these effects creatively, not transparently as part of a mixdown. Still, if you're not careful this is a great way to destroy a tune, and if you're not aware you should be level matching, using a multiband compressor is probably doing more harm than good.
@@lancemezh6345 I guess it's fine to mess around with OTT creatively in the way shown in the vid so long as you're level matching your input / output. This isn't a mixdown tutorial, so I won't comment on when/how/why you should use multiband compression in that context. I've heard some people say that when you start out you should dial in a value that sounds good, and then back off about 50%. I hadn't heard this when I started so can't comment on it personally, but I can see the wisdom in it: subtlety is key and something that you just learn to get right over time.
If people don't know how to use a compressor then multi band compression is definitely too advanced. My advice is; learn basic compression and parametric eq'ing, then move on to multi band compression.
ReAKTIV thank you. I've made electronic music since 1992. My first sampler was a 12 bit Ensoniq EPS that I bought with a friend along with two Technics 1210s and a cheap mixer. I still have own and use one of the turntables. I'm an old fart is what I'm saying. I switched to Ableton on version 4 for fucks sake 😀 If you want another advice then it would be to look into getting a Pushtec and Pultec VST for upwards and downwards compression like in the good old days. The pushtec/pultec defined the sound of groups like *The Prodigy* and to me they are Top 3 of all times - both mix-wise and in their songwriting. They were among the first big room techno acts, if not _the_ first. There probably wouldn't be a Scrillex without them. So look into that if you like this sort of compression. Peace ✌️

Great content man! It's not really relevant to the video, but I'm curious to know if you're willing to share: Do you have a day job in addition to being a producer or are you doing it full-time?
Hunter White Thanks. I’ve had several odd jobs in my life, started off delivering pizzas, worked at a farmers market, was a lighting designer/VJ, made music for a circus, but I’ve reached being a full time producer/DJ for ~ 3 years now. ✌️👽 if you’re looking to do similarly, Try to practice in ableton everyday, constantly try to learn new things and as talent develops actively search for ways to monetize your skills. It was a gradual shift for me. Cheers 👽✌️
OTT is a multiband compressor after all! Why is everyone afraid to use the attack and release settings in conjunction with the gain reduction it gives AND THEIR EARS? It is never good to go extreme with multibands because It creates uneven results in audio spectrum. Harsh settings is rarely good and they are only good when you know where to use them. Don't be afraid to be a boomer at first in order learn and break the rules in the end but, you have to know them first!
The one big problem that makes me reconsider using ott regularly is the fact those band crossfades mess up some sounds’ phase. I have no problem with the plugin itself but people should be aware of this when using it
Great vid man really helped, where did you get that amen break sample from? Been struggling to find some that actually sound crisp and sit well in the mix
So I want to start bouncing my group stems from Maschine plus and mixdown inside of Ableton to try this. I usually have an xpander on my drum group inside of Maschine plus . I’m wondering is i should leave that on ir get rid of it to leave room for the OTT inside of Ableton
Having used a fair number of multi-band compressors I'd say those time setting are pretty strange for use with edm. Usually you'd want a lot more attack in the low end and a lot less release. A 50 ms attack will only affect two full cycles so the waveform will be pretty distorted on sub-bass transients (basically turning sinewaves into ramp waves). And a quarter second release is two whole beats at 120 bpm so the compressor will pretty much stay down.
Also its pretty clear that if you put heavy compression on something with heavy delay and reverb you are probably gonna wanna turn the dry wet on the delay and reverb down. Or better yet run them after the compressor if possible.
Hey, great vid. Might sounds like a stupid question but just making sure, if I download/purchase your Magic Boxes, I can see and adjust the parameters of the effects contained within each macro if I wanted to, right?
7:15 imo this sounds fine to me, I mean maybe the amount is up a *bit* too high and the reverb is kind of blown out as a result but it sounds ok otherwise, I did notice a lot of crackling though, it that just the video or the sample itself or what
