Ziemer is all over the place with short bursts and bent notes, battle goes for a very sweet light-hearted sound, and Sumi Jo goes with a joyful strength. Sumi Jo was my favorite.

Even though I've always loved Kathleen Battle's voice, I prefer Sumi Jo's performance of Voices of Spring, primarily, I think, because of her incredible vibrato, which really enhances this music. Of course, this is a personal preference: Some people dislike vibrato.

@Caribman9999 I never cease to be amazed by the different ways individuals hear "appreciate" music. My purely personal feeling is that Sumi Jo and Maria Callas are like chalk and cheese. Ms Callas has always "left me cold" The one voice I adore above all others you feel similar to one I dislike. Truly human taste is an unsolvable mystery! Enjoy your music what ever it may be!
Not being an expert in in classical music and opera, I tried to compare Sumi Jo's performance on this video with others by Ute Ziemer, Natilie Dessay, and Kathleen Battle. I find they differ enough to say that all of these ladies take liberties with the piece, which is not a bad thing.
I don't think that her German is better audible at all.Everyone is entitled to their opinion but did you actually listen to Kathleen Batlle's performance properly?It's pure joy and with Karajan conducting nothing can trump that.Sumi Jo is an incredible singer and I love her performance of Caccini's Ave Maria or Mozart's Der Hoelle Rache.

i'm korean, but i did like battle's video better with karajan, its my opinion but it is the voice of spring and spring reminds me of calm happiness :) and karajan's orchestra was just wonderful uplifting battle's voice that it made her voice sound sweet

I watched the original Stooges short that featured Christine McIntyre singing "Voices of Spring." You can look her up on Wikipedia-"Christine Cecilia McIntyre, a native of Nogales, Arizona, is mainly known as the beautiful blonde actress who appeared in the Three Stooges shorts from Columbia Short Pictures. McIntyre was also classically trained as a singer, having attended the Chicago Musical College, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1933.
well, I think her voice is powerful enough not to let the orchestra overpower her. I think the balance is actually pretty good. Her voice is so well controlled though eh? that's amazing!
IN the music world and where Opera is concerned, it seems as though we judge as best those who sing the loudest and highest. I happen to like both Sumi Jo and battle, however, Battle always seems more finessed to me.
True, she does tend to wear dresses that are really something else... and this one is... well, honestly, it's quite funny. ^^U Still, who cares what she's wearing, as long as she sings like that... she could be wearing rags and I'd still want her on a stage. *___*

My favorite recording of this is by Mady Mesple. I think Sumi is better in French repertoire. Her French arias album is superb.
