I doesn't help your video credibility if you use out of focus images to compare lenses. The close-up at 1.4 at 9:25 is not focused on the metal at all. Why even include it to compare sharpness?
The samples shots you used seriously make it look like you had a bad sample of the lens - I'm not a pro, but it doesn't look like any typical kind of aberration, it looks like a glass element inside is misaligned
Yeaaah, actually you got a bad copy of 35mm f1.4 - it's front-focusing. I had the same problem, fixed it with sigma usb dock. So basically what you got on f1.4-2.8 with that lens werent' aberations - it a front/back focus.
neither of them, I have now sony a7r2 and owned a7s before, so it worked incorrectly on a7s (via leea4 adapter), that's true, but after I switched to a7r2 it started working properly with leea3.
Before you buy sigma, there are couple of things you should know. ( pls, I'm not being biased. It's from my past experience. Last sigma lens I owned was 50mm 1.4 EX DG) 1. Probability of getting a bad copy is quite high. 2. If you are in countries like USA, you may get that replaced however in countries like India, you may have to gulp with it. ( check the return policy before you buy). 3. Few Sigma lenses, as Matt pointed out are hyped. So it's important to set the expectation right before you buy. 4. Re-sale value of Sigma lens is way too low. Last two lens I sold were 12-24 FX and 50mm 1.4 EX DG. Both sold for 50% less. If you don't have he money to buy a new Nikon/canon. Try and check for used lens rather than going for a sigma.
Probably the most entertaining of Matt's videos, so far. And not due to the lens being reviewed, but rather due to Matt cracking jokes and being way more relaxed than in any of his other videos.
Great review Matt!! I really like the walk-around/on location footage mixed with your traditional talk to the camera review style with 100% comparisons. Entertaining and informative.
I have a very good example for several months. The tree's are just out of focus. It surely has nothing to do with any aberrations at all. Mine is tack sharp at 1.4 and its focus works perfect. Stunningly even. I think the fault percentage should be around 2% on my device. I use a Canon 5d mark III and a 6d. I really hate the fact that there is no weather sealing tho. Since I use it on festival grounds and clubs.
I just concluded testing my copy of this lens against the Nikon 35mm f1.4G, I used a tree with no leaves, range about 20ft. At F1.4 I need many hundreds of percentage crop to get even close to the blur you have in your test! At f1.8 my copy is razor edge & corner. The thing I did notice was chromatic in the corners wide open, but right in the corners. The Nikon is really great and its caught up with the Sigma by about f3.2 Both lenses close to new - never been dropped, has yours?.
thanks for the feedback. I suggest you do the same test. It is not common to shoot wide open, at a tree, and check the edges - but it is there. Another Avid fan of the lens (Jonathon Stewart Photography) remade the test as he doubted it - and found the aberrations even middle of frame.
A few points to note. People saying the test image of the trees is out of focus, that this was a defective lens or was caused by front focus. 1st - check the earlier samples such as the 100% crop at 5.37 - it is tack sharp. 2nd in the tree shot, at f1.4, shooting around 20 meters away - I had 51 meters DOF - it was NOT out of focus. I realise this lens is sacred for some people - but it is not perfect. That said, this is not usual usage. A fan of the lens re did my tests & found problems too.
Get the Sigma lens calibrated to your camera body...and you will rectify all the problems you experienced. Focusing on tree leaves at a distance, or shooting wide open at close range should be perfectly sharp. If its not....then you got a front/back focus issue.
Matt, thanks for the review, always helpful, really. In this case as an owner of really good pieces of glass I have to tell you that I´m pretty sure you´ve got to calibrate the D800 AF to the lens, I´ve compared my Sigma 35 f1.4 to the best primes out there and nothing gets close from 1.4 all the way up. Cheers Matt.
Great video brother I love how much in depth you get into reviewing equipment and the somewhat live uploading of the shot right after its taking makes your videos fun to watch!
Two questions....1) Can't you get rid of CA through lightroom? 2)What do mean Calibrate the lens, and how would you do it? As always, thanks for the review!
*Matt, the sample you reviewed was not a good sample,* I had one exactly like that too. But when it was reprogrammed, it then lived up to the hype when I got it back. It really is that good, the hype was not unwarranted.
I wonder about from 6:35 onward, if there was a focusing problem with that particular sample? That would explain why it got sharp at F8 because DOF would have fixed the issue. I have the same combination of lens and D800E and will try replicate the test tomorrow (it's dark right now).
it was in focus, it was a side crop as I mentioned. And I also said I highly recommend it in the 35mm f1.4 market. Certainly possible it was a dodgy copy - but generally they have even higher QA standards for review samples.
The camera used; was it full frame with the both lenses? Quick tip! the Sigma 35mm - although it's initially designed as a "full frame" lens actually works much better on an APS-C.
I really don't see corner/edge softness as an issue for this kind of lens. You don't buy a 1.4 in this focal length to shoot subjects like a line of trees 75' away, and if you did you probably wouldn't choose to shoot at anything less than f/8 or so. 95% of your shooting is likely to be close subjects wide open for that blown out background, in which case corner and edge sharpness isn't even an issue. Good review otherwise, thanks Matt. I'll hopefully be picking one up eventually.
HI Matt, got my Siggy 1.4 35 last month took it with to HK and shot a bunch of shots in Sham Sui Poh and I loved every bit of it. In fact I'm gonna stop buy Nikkor lens if Sigma continues to build quality glass like this. Saw the new model Sigma 120-300 2.8 and that's really nice to. If you want me to post a few let me know where to post. Thanks John
Matt, do a focus adjust (or a reaserach about it) or else you can conclude ridiculous conclusions like - 24-70 @2.8 is sharper than 35 Art @2.8... if focus is right - then Sigma is sharper @ 1.4 than this zoom stopped down to f4.0. in fact Sigmas 35 Art main advantage and review praise was that it was the sharpest lens to that time wide open - noone had expierienced such a resolution at f1.4 before - but your images was just out of focus (even at f2.8 and above).
I have to say that I admire your fearlessness when it comes to photographing strangers. It makes me super nervous to the same. Thanks for sharing the review.
Hey Matt, about the 35mm ART lens... Do you use this lens and if so, Did you find a need to calibrate it prior to taking it out to the field before shooting?
Lovely review. I can choose between the new 50mm 1.4 Art and the 35mm 1.4 Art from Sigma.I have a 70D (APS-C). For portrait, street which one will you choose ? :) Thank you
This was my first 'pro' glass I picked up for my D600. I really enjoy shooting with it compared to the 24-85mm 3.5-4.5, which is just good but not inspiring. The colors are crisp and bokeh is creamy on the sigma. I was thinking of getting a 85mm next, but after Matt's review maybe I should look at the 2.8 zooms. Thanks for all you videos. I especially enjoyed the brief video of the Diamond Hotel in Manila, because that vacation I proposed to my fiancé. Cheers!
Question for you, thatnikonguy, do you ever use that Hoodman eyecup without your glasses on? I'm asking because I'm thinking of getting the glasses version for my 5DIII, but I only wear glasses occasionally...
Hi Matt, have you done AP fine-tune on the D800 for the Sigma? I thought mine was soft at F1.4, but after fine-tuning it, it is the sharpest lens that I have ever seen.
I gotta say, even with a 5Dc focus system, my 35 1.4 does amazing. Always sharp, always impressive. I'm usually shooting between 1.8-2.2 and I love it.
Matt I am curious to know if you actually AF fine tune the Sigma with the D800E. I am a big nikon fanboy and I dont usually stand behind 3rd party.I have a D800E myself and its focus is notoriously bad. After getting it back from Nikon for AF repair, I have to fine tune the AF on all my lenses by huge margins, close to -20. The tree shot and fountain shot you did I couldnt help but think the lens need AF adjustments.I had the nikon 35mm, but this one is much better below f/2.8 and hence the sale
Hey Matt, for a long time I thought you were so wrong with this lens but now that I have tested this my self, I can only confirm your observations. The lens seems to be sharp in close ups but if you try a highly detailed scene one can come to the same conclusion as yours. Thanx!!
Agreed. It seems like it's just out of focus. I also noticed the small part in the left bottom corner looks much better, so I'm pretty sure the lens was front focused. Matt should have focused manually using live view.
By any chance, did you run an AF microadjustment on it? I own a sigma 50 f1.4 and I had to do it - after that, the detail and sharpness at f1.4 were top notch
I'm quite happy with my Sigma 30mm F1.4, which is just almost the same in terms of specs. Why did I get it? Because it translates to just under 50mm on my cropsensor, and it's a fantastic focal length for me. Sadly, I don't have a top-notch lens to compare it with, but it's definately a LOT sharper than the Canon 50mm F1.4, which for that reason I have sold.
Matt - price aside. I do love the Nikon 50mm 1.8G and have a crop sensor Nikon (D7000) but I find it very tight for my use. Do you think this (35mm 1.4) would be better and is of great quality and a high standard?
I own the 24-70 and Sigma ART. If you test like Matt, you may get the same results. You need the USB dock and careful calibration because 1.4 is SHALLOW stuff. Once done, the ART lens will easily best my 24-70 and it's very sharp wide open. Both great lenses, but the Sigma is a better lens at 35mm.
It's unfortunate you weren't able to test this lens out on your newly acquired 1DX. Based on your results you might have either gotten a defective copy or you need some kind of AF adjust/calibration on the camera. I know you live in Australia but here in the US all the major retailers have this lens available/in-stock (even Pentax mount). Sigma might be short-changing the rest of the world in terms of stock but everyone I've known who has wanted this lens has had zero problems acquiring it.
Hi Matt,..you really do need to adjust that lens with Sigma USB dock....if you haven't and you will see that lens shines..... to me... that lens is still outfocusing for short focal distance
totally agree....Matt needs to adjust it with Sigma USB dock to adjust each focal distance focusing offered by the dock.... 1.4 razor sharp...on my 5d mk III after got adjusted with the dock
Hi Matt, 1st of all I'd like 2 thank u for bring out these awesome videos I have learnt a lot from them.Matt I have two questions to ask you: 1) What was that website you once recommended to converting f-stop value to T-stop for Any lens reviewed? 2) I'm looking for Constant lighting kit for applications for Macro indoor work as well as Outdoor work. Could you or Anyone recommend which type of lighting to go for? Thanks Note: I will mainly be doing Food cooking filming work in my home kitchen.
Is it even worth getting the 35mm on crop (wont be be upgrading to ff anytime soon) instead of the 30mm which is half the price? Ive heard the IQ is not that far off from the 35mm but haven't seen a decent review comparing the two side by side.
at f1.4, maybe that is called focus shift. it happens to fast lens that have no floating lens element. that's why sometime you miss the focus on small number aperture like f1.4
There's definitely something wrong with your sample. I bought one, and with no adjustment it's THE best lens optically in my bag, mounted on a D800 it easily out resolves the 24-70mm Nikkor. Oddly I will say that the first few days I shot with my lens, I did get a couple front focused shots, but they disappeared and never returned. Maybe the focus helicoils just needed breaking in or the lubricant worked in or something, I don't know. I've been using the lens for 2 years now and it's always been a razor after the first couple days. It's also become my most used lens in my bag. (Scenics)
hi sir, i am just beginner. i have already canon 100mm L. i can get all bokeh and closed to object . what is 35mm advantages ??? ..... i have also canon 50 1.4 85 1.8 .... should i buy 35mm ???
I gladly sold my Nikkor 24-70 to purchase this Sigma. I don't shoot trees or the sun, I needed a lens for shooting environmental portraits and my widest prime was a 50mm. I disliked using the 24-70 on my D800 because it just wasn't sharp enough and I wasn't shooting below f4. I loved the 24-70 but I am happy to have made the switch.
I have been wanting to try this lens out because I have heard wonderful things. I am both a professional photographer and film maker. The question I have for you is the focus ring nice when using manual focus?? I currently own the older Sigma 50mm and the focus ring is pretty terrible compared to the Canon version. Would you him say the focus ring on this is comparable to the Canon for video production?? Thank you in advance!!
Nicest review from you I've seen yet. Great style and like the "overlay" style of displaying the photos on top of the video as you continue the action. Do have two suggestions though: if you want to do an A-B comparison, try putting both images side-by-side at half width rather than one after the other. Also, for all finished shots it would be nice to include the technical details (aperture, shutter speed & ISO) as you flash them onscreen--can help us appreciate sharpness vs bokeh, etc.
Check your lens for front focus. In the last images there might be a slight hint of spherochromatism (color bokeh). The green around the highlights may indicate like the focus is off causing a lower sharpness. At least that's how it works with my primes (and some zooms). At f1.4 focus accuracy really starts to matter. Focussing in live view should take the doubt away
@@JeremyGalloway I saw Matt once talk about it, and he said that he sometimes does that, and then talk to those people afterwards, because telling them beforehand would ruin the moment. He grabs the moment and then tell people what he's doing.
please help me to choose... if you should choose only 1 or 2 lenses for nikon d750 (fx) body which one you think the best lens range for wedding (the most usefull)? 16-35mm(nikon f4 VR) , 24mm (nikon f1.8g), 35mm (sigma f1.4 ART), 85mm (nikon 1.8g) or else? please can you sort from the best choice to the end ..
One of those reviews I like. Practical and comprehensible. But I was really suprised about the poor performance of the Sigma at 2.8. Maybe Jonathan is right and you got a defective one. Thank you Matt, it´s been a while, but this is a great review again!
Don't even know how Matt made this test, but my Sigma 35 1.4 have no blur! It's very very very sharp!!!
I doesn't help your video credibility if you use out of focus images to compare lenses. The close-up at 1.4 at 9:25 is not focused on the metal at all. Why even include it to compare sharpness?
my thoughts exactly...
LS_scape totally agreed!
The samples shots you used seriously make it look like you had a bad sample of the lens - I'm not a pro, but it doesn't look like any typical kind of aberration, it looks like a glass element inside is misaligned
Said the guy who would go on to be a pro😂😂🤣🤣
That totally is not Chromatic Aberration. It is front/back focusing which can easily be fixed.
Yeaaah, actually you got a bad copy of 35mm f1.4 - it's front-focusing. I had the same problem, fixed it with sigma usb dock. So basically what you got on f1.4-2.8 with that lens werent' aberations - it a front/back focus.
Hi, did you have a. Nikon or Canon? I heard the 50mm sigma Art had some focus inconsistency, what about mother 35mm
neither of them, I have now sony a7r2 and owned a7s before, so it worked incorrectly on a7s (via leea4 adapter), that's true, but after I switched to a7r2 it started working properly with leea3.

If you don't have he money to buy a new Nikon/canon. Try and check for used lens rather than going for a sigma.
Prasanth Sylvester Good advice. totally agree, particularly no.1
Probably the most entertaining of Matt's videos, so far. And not due to the lens being reviewed, but rather due to Matt cracking jokes and being way more relaxed than in any of his other videos.

Bought the sigma 35 art. Used it on a 1DS MKii ii. Photos are very sharp and crisp!! So sharp looks like I did some ps sharpening. July 2022!!

I'm just now looking to buy one of these.... What's your opinion on general Sigma lens character vs a Nikon 1.4
Great video brother I love how much in depth you get into reviewing equipment and the somewhat live uploading of the shot right after its taking makes your videos fun to watch!
Two questions....1) Can't you get rid of CA through lightroom? 2)What do mean Calibrate the lens, and how would you do it?

can't wait to get this lens! incredible

Your video editing suddenly became much better! Loving the new layout and intro! :)
I just bought this lens a 3 weeks ago and it hasn't came off my camera since. Love it!
I wonder about from 6:35 onward, if there was a focusing problem with that particular sample? That would explain why it got sharp at F8 because DOF would have fixed the issue. I have the same combination of lens and D800E and will try replicate the test tomorrow (it's dark right now).
I have this lens and I love it! I used it for environmental portraits for my clients and it works well.

The camera used; was it full frame with the both lenses? Quick tip! the Sigma 35mm - although it's initially designed as a "full frame" lens actually works much better on an APS-C.
I really like the way you presented this review! More energy to it, so much more fun to watch!
I'll hopefully be picking one up eventually.
because many people own a 24-70 and are considering a prime for the perceived sharpness benefit, as much as the extra aperture.
Matt, what do you mean by "calibrate your lens' focus"? Is it a setting on the camera? How do we do it? Can you make a video on that? Thanks!
This lens is absolutely unbelieveable! My favorite lens and appreciation for Sigma and prime lens.
Hi Philip, I have the same result as you, mine is very sharp averywhere at every aperture
HI Matt, got my Siggy 1.4 35 last month took it with to HK and shot a bunch of shots in Sham Sui Poh and I loved every bit of it. Does the Nikon 35mm 1.4 perform any better? Surely you should compare like with like. Thanks for the information anyway.
Sorry matt once this lens is calibrated its stellar. best lens I own and sharper than my 24-70 nikon.
You calibrated for a Canon or Nikon?
Matt, do a focus adjust (or a reaserach about it) or else you can conclude ridiculous conclusions like - 24-70 @2.8 is sharper than 35 Art @2.8... if focus is right - then Sigma is sharper @ 1.4 than this zoom stopped down to f4.0. in fact Sigmas 35 Art main advantage and review praise was that it was the sharpest lens to that time wide open - noone had expierienced such a resolution at f1.4 before - but your images was just out of focus (even at f2.8 and above).
maybe it isn't such a ridiculous conclusion.
the nikon 24-70 is an amazing lens hence the price tag.
Thank you
This was my first 'pro' glass I picked up for my D600. Cheers!
Hey Matt, we want a re-test for this lens..Are you sure you got a good copy?
9 years after the images u got here at still top notch
Question for you, thatnikonguy, do you ever use that Hoodman eyecup without your glasses on? I'm asking because I'm thinking of getting the glasses version for my 5DIII, but I only wear glasses occasionally...
Hi Matt, have you done AP fine-tune on the D800 for the Sigma? I thought mine was soft at F1.4, but after fine-tuning it, it is the sharpest lens that I have ever seen.
Does sigma have good quality in their other lenses? Have been a little weary to buy given their cheaper price....
nope - next video live tomorrow.
Fantastic. How do you get over just taking pictures of people without feeling weird?
@Alberts Kuks , your are correct the lens was not correctly in focus the sigma 35 is way more sharp its annoying to see reviews like this.
Hey Matt, for a long time I thought you were so wrong with this lens but now that I have tested this my self, I can only confirm your observations. The lens seems to be sharp in close ups but if you try a highly detailed scene one can come to the same conclusion as yours. Thanx!!
Hay I like your hat...... I don't really. Lols
What kind of hat was the hay wearing?
Hi Matt, I suggest that you AP fine-tune this lens on your D800e and then make a new video.
Seeing this fish market makes me want to live in Sydney. You should be called: That Lucky Guy.
Hey Matt. What eyecup are you using on the D800E, it looked great.
Great outdoor review Matt, very informative with humor mixed in. I agree with everything you said.
Love these out and about reviews, Matt!
Matt - price aside. I do love the Nikon 50mm 1.8G and have a crop sensor Nikon (D7000) but I find it very tight for my use. Do you think this (35mm 1.4) would be better and is of great quality and a high standard?
Just bought the 24-70 Tamron for Nikon..so happy :)
you have a bad copy, my sigma is not like that
I still suggest you try it yourself. Green tree, at a distance - side crop - may not be something test charts show - but its a reality.
I like the new intro! You need to set a date for Europe (Ireland in particular)...would be great to get you over!! :)
HI! what about the IS ? do you have any problems by not having it?
It's unfortunate you weren't able to test this lens out on your newly acquired 1DX. Based on your results you might have either gotten a defective copy or you need some kind of AF adjust/calibration on the camera. I know you live in Australia but here in the US all the major retailers have this lens available/in-stock (even Pentax mount). Sigma might be short-changing the rest of the world in terms of stock but everyone I've known who has wanted this lens has had zero problems acquiring it.
Do you think it would worth to buy this lens in DX? Thanks
Hi Matt,..you really do need to adjust that lens with Sigma USB dock....if you haven't and you will see that lens shines.....
to me... that lens is still outfocusing for short focal distance
The birds at 5:30 are like wearing plague doctor masque.😷
totally agree....Matt needs to adjust it with Sigma USB dock to adjust each focal distance focusing offered by the dock....
1.4 razor sharp...on my 5d mk III after got adjusted with the dock
Hi Matt, 1st of all I'd like 2 thank u for bring out these awesome videos I have learnt a lot from them.Matt I have two questions to ask you:
1) What was that website you once recommended to converting f-stop value to T-stop for Any lens reviewed? 2) I'm looking for Constant lighting kit for applications for Macro indoor work as well as Outdoor work. Could you or Anyone recommend which type of lighting to go for? Thanks Note: I will mainly be doing Food cooking filming work in my home kitchen.
Is it even worth getting the 35mm on crop (wont be be upgrading to ff anytime soon) instead of the 30mm which is half the price? Ive heard the IQ is not that far off from the 35mm but haven't seen a decent review comparing the two side by side.
At f1.4 and the distance to the trees (around 20 meters) it would have had around 53 METERS depth of field. It was not out of focus.
Did you use a dock to fine tune the lens?
Your new intro is very nice, Matt
at f1.4, maybe that is called focus shift. it happens to fast lens that have no floating lens element. that's why sometime you miss the focus on small number aperture like f1.4
Very well done video Matt, One of your best so far! I love the new style :) Cheers
Waiting list? One particular camera store in Copenhagen has it in stock.
Are you going to review the sigma 17-35 f/1.8?
cheers buddy
what is your best 35mm lens in terms of sharpness?
Thank you in advance!!
post it as a video response - love to see the results. My crop was from centre right edge.
Is that field curvature on the leaves? Or do you mean aberration in terms of simple edge sharpness?
Hi Matt, have you ever try shooting with two 60×60cm softboxes with speedlights? Can you make and review on that? Would very much appreciate. Cheers!
Love the new intro Matt!
Matt, don’t you think it’s rude to take picture of people close up without asking them first?
It is rude!
@@JeremyGalloway I saw Matt once talk about it, and he said that he sometimes does that, and then talk to those people afterwards, because telling them beforehand would ruin the moment. He grabs the moment and then tell people what he's doing.
And slagging off their outfits 😂
Nice review, the Lens didnt Focus right tho. Therefore the comparison to the Nikon was pretty much useless...
please help me to choose... if you should choose only 1 or 2 lenses for nikon d750 (fx) body which one you think the best lens range for wedding (the most usefull)? 16-35mm(nikon f4 VR) , 24mm (nikon f1.8g), 35mm (sigma f1.4 ART), 85mm (nikon 1.8g) or else? please can you sort from the best choice to the end ..
thanks buddy
One of those reviews I like. Practical and comprehensible. But I was really suprised about the poor performance of the Sigma at 2.8. Maybe Jonathan is right and you got a defective one. Thank you Matt, it´s been a while, but this is a great review again!
