It was a complete overkill. And he deserve it.
I feel like most people still dont understand that what the king did to Maleficent was a rape allegory. He stole her innocence and she was never the same. I feel no pity for him as I feel the director intended.
I don’t think the director intended for you to feel pity for the King. If anything this scene is frames so you’re rooting for Maleficent the entire time. It’s more a power trip than anything.
I don’t think that an innocent baby of his deserved to be put in a death like sleep, which Mal intended for there to be no breaking as vengeance, though. What she did was wrong there. She had every right to hate Stephen for what he did to her, but what makes her a villain is the fact that she took out her vengeance against him on an innocent child.
The only thing that ruins the whole rape metaphor for me is that Maleficent’s wings grow back. When someone rapes another person, the victim can never get back the autonomy that was stolen from them.
I love how she performs a clapback at Stefan by saying that the only way to reverse the curse is by True Love's Kiss. It's not only supposed to remind Stefan of the love they once shared, but also to represent how she no longer believes in the power of love itself. Because of how he betrayed her, she's left so heartbroken and distrusting that she can't even open up her heart or mind to the idea of love again. She believes so little in it that she thinks that Aurora's curse would never be lifted because true love doesn't exist in her eyes. This added reversal part is also a reference that only Stefan would understand; he's the one who told her about True Love's Kiss, but he's also the one who broke her heart and betrayed her. By doing this, Stefan is forced to remember the moments from his youth that he and Maleficent shared, as his daughter's curse reversal literally relies on the very thing that he once gifted Maleficent.

I love the way when she was casting the curse, she was looking at the king, as if saying "this is the pain you made me feel and now I'll make you feel it, tenfold."
Stefan took her wings to become king, a show of strength and testament to the former king. He thought he would get away with it but this scene was his true test, the test of the real courage and bravery of a king. When Maleficent was cursing Aurora, everyone was looking to him to do something but instead of intervening, he begged maleficent to not do it. A show of what a coward he truly is.
To be fair he didn't love his wife and daughter he only cared about power he even forgets his true love was Maleficent but his ambition of power ends up destroying him.
To be fair, if a demon witch lady busted into my castle and said they were going to curse my heir, I'd try to get them to stop. Sure, he's a dick, but it's like trying to get someone who broke into your house with a gun to not shoot your child.
The meaning behind a man clipping a fairies wings makes his cowardice truly shine, his applauded exploitation of a fairy in her sleep, in fact, rewarded by the king, makes this film really mean something. The way I see it, she should never have cursed aurora, even she knew that, I think maleficent should have at least killed him, but moreso than that cursed him to never be with his family, title or life ever again.
This film is so beautifully written. As a kid, you empathise with the villain which is actually a good way of improving children's mindset about good and bad and that there are people who are grey. But as an adult, this scene is truly iconic. I have never felt female rage at its peak this much in any film
It does actually remind people not to hurt others and still think it's ok to do so. No it isn't! But it's also not good to take revenge either, because then you still look bad even though you were wronged. None of it in any way is right.
Also at the same time, she was only after her wings back after he stole them. Any love she had for him is gone period. Once you step over that line, there is no love left. Think about that before you cross that line.
*"I like you begging. Do it again."* That line was so chilling. All I could think about how vulnerable and hurt Maleficent was in the woods, how Stefan had taken everything from her. As horrible as her actions were, I wanted Stefan to eat shit in this moment.
Because she was lame? I mean, the whole movie and this scene in particular are lame, irony is that Angelina Jolie actually does make some good performance, but being somewhat good in a schlock of a movie isn't enough for an Oscar. Being good in a good movie, that's something different.

Out of all the disney remakes I really think this is by far the best, since it actually retells the story anew and doesn't just put what was already there into shiny live action. Also Angelina as Maleficent is just perfect !!
The facial expression change at 1:19 gives me chills She looked almost like a puppy for a second there, and then a turns to a malicious smile as if she'd cared for the invitation
Fun fact in the original disney movie they used this animation trick where they had film of people doing the movement they wanted the animated character to do. And for maleficent i think i heard that the woman who originally portrayed 'Vampira' did the facial expressions movement
I love how this scene showed how much power Maleficent truly had as a direct descendant of the phoenix and as basically the reincarnation of the phoenix
She kind of just cursed herself....she said that the princess would be 'beloved by all who meet her' - so she just cursed herself to love her. On the plus side though, it means that Aurora will never have to fear a revolution, a revolt or people conspiring behind her back, they won't be able to bring themselves to betray her.
"You would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair”
Very like. Though a bit of me was also thinking in the style of Miss Havisham's words from 'Great Expectations' "Love her, love her, love her! If she favours you love her. If she wounds you, love her. If she tears your heart to pieces - and as it gets older and stronger it will tear deeper - love her, love her, lover her!....Hear me.......I bred her and educated her, to be loved. I developed her into what she is, that she might be loved. Love her!"
You know I always felt so bad for Aurora's mother. After that curse was placed on the child and after King Stefan sent her away, the poor woman never saw her child again.
And what's worse is that king stefan didn't cared at all when he was told that his wife died. He was just obsessed in taking revenge on maleficent. I was like "bro, you are the reason why this is happening. You literally broke a innocent woman's trust by drugging her and cutting off her wings because you cared more about becoming king than the love she felt for you. 🤦🏽♀️"

Let's be honest Stefan should've known he had this one coming for a long time after a cruel betrayal and stripping the identity of Malaficent for his petty ambitions. So Malaficent wanted to get him where it hurts.
That's one of the plot holes. He did this to a powerful magic fairy who was leader of the Moors, yet didn't do anything to even prepare for Maleficent. It doesn't make any sense.
He did it for power and wealth, if she showed up earlier.. he would be busted - she is alive, he just cut off her wings. That's not exactly what the King wanted. He broke her heart. She was broken and literaly weak. Can't expect that she will just get up to bring back what belongs to her. She became sad, cold and harsh - like many humans would be. Her normal human reactions sopped her from going for fadt "Heartbroken Fairy Revange". After some time she had strenght and found way to hurt him back. It's not really plothole. He is just stupid and ignorant. She is more human than we think.
@ASZ - The MoonWalker. Except that would make Stefan not just a little stupid, but borderline mentally retarded stupid... like pulling on a tiger's tail stupid. If we assume Stefan was that stupid that only further widens the already big power gap between him & Maleficent. Maleficent was a powerful fairy with super-human strength, rapid self-healing and various magic powers (curses, telekinesis, lightning storms, shape-shifting, etc) who led superior armies of magical creatures. Stefan was not only a physically weaker crazy mortal with no magic powers who led inferior weaker armies who always lost, but now he's also borderline mentally retarded stupid? The movie is like Godzilla (Maleficent) vs. a very stupid Bambi (Stefan).
Maleficent loved him. I believe Stefan thought Maleficent won't come for him because of that. Also, Maleficent stayed quiet for so long, until the birthday of the princess. Stefan probably thought Maleficent has forgiven him
“Beloved by all who Meet her…” Maleficent didn’t realize she was kinda Included in that…. and can we also point out the fact that Maleficant brought a KING to his knees?! that’s Pretty badass!
Something I just noticed on my most recent viewing of this great movie and this scene: The curse was made to, in a couple different ways, reflect Stefan's past betrayals of Maleficent. Think about it: 1. The curse against Aurora will come to pass "On her sixteenth birthday..." Maleficent and Stefan had their first kiss on her sixteenth birthday. 2. "She will fall into a sleep like death..." A forced sleep, a LOT like how Stefan drugged Maleficent with a sleeping potion in order to then cut off her wings.
Small Diaval moments I appreciate during this scene. 1) Cawing when Maleficent does her evil laugh as if he too is evil laughing. 2) How his caw sounds like “uh huh” after her invitation statement. 3) His concern gesture when Maleficent started to “cry”. 4) Aggresive caw at Stephan at 1:49
Stephan's fault in this movie. Why should the mother suffer? I still think that in that scene when he's talking to the wings and a messanger comes in to tell him that the queen is asking for him that what she wanted to ask him was to bring their daughter back for one day so that she can see her before she dies. I don't think Stephan was a good husband either in this film.
Even in the original movie, when there’s an occasion like this, everyone was to be invited, even the people of the lowest class. So by not inviting Maleficent, they insulted her gravely.
A random evil fairy going around cursing babies over jealousy BUT still gave the baby a chance to wake up and have true love along with immortality as long as she was sleep, I see some sympathy there in the original and not just a simple evil fairy. Or maybe Maleficent wanting to see if true loves kiss does exist because she never had true love. And this is exactly why the Maleficent movie was needed villians need more backstories and not just go around cursing babies over not receiving invitations and be known as "the most evil".
@@deannalovette1509 in the original., maleficent's cursed is for the baby to die. the third fairy just changed it a bit since she's not powerful enough to take it away.
this scene was absolutely beautiful, the acting, the body language, actual language, the facial expressions, the tones of voice, everything was soooo real and perfect.......and the whole thing was a serious power move too
Weirdly enough, this one act of goodness Stefan performs - prostrating himself to gain mercy for his baby - saved both Aurora's life and Maleficent's soul. If he hadn't compelled Maleficent to put in the "true love's kiss" bit, Aurora would have fallen asleep forever, and Maleficent would have to spend forever living with her guilt.
Angelina really was the perfect fit for Maleficent. The condescension and pettiness is just gold. Stephan really did deserve it though. He basically stole Maleficent’s identity, as relied on her wings to assist her in protecting the Moors. Without them, she couldn’t get anywhere as quickly as she would’ve liked due to seemingly inability to teleport, something that was different from the original. The curse also parallels Maleficent in a whole lot of ways. During Stephan’s “true love’s kiss” scene, not only was Maleficent 16, but the kiss also happened as the sun was setting. Everything here just works and flows so naturally, makes sense since with the original, we could never get this level of characterization.
Angelina really was the perfect fit for Maleficent and I also agree Stephan really did deserve it, but baby Aurora did not deserve it. Maleficent knew Stefan cursed her for the crown, power and wealth... yet for 16+years Maleficent let Stefan keep & have fun with all the reasons he betrayed & mutilated her... meanwhile she instead went crazy evil to target an innocent baby. Also, this story makes Maleficent's "true love's kiss" curse counter-productive. If Stefan or his wife didn't "truly love" Aurora then the curse didn't truly hurt them and if either one did "truly love" Aurora then even their kiss would cure Aurora... Maleficent didn't know anything about Aurora's birth mother so Maleficent got unusually lucky since I would wager most new mothers do "truly love" their babies. Second, Maleficent obviously implied romantic love, but in her curse she only used the word "love" so "friendship love" even works. Yet, it's crazy for Maleficent to believe "true romantic love" doesn't exist based only on her sample size of 1 ex-boyfriend, who she knew was a poor loser thief who had nothing going for him. The original doesn't have those problems, among others.
@@PyroDrewI think the curse really took a toll on the parents, especially Stefan. He went insane, constantly visiting the wings and even talking to it to the point that when his wife asked to see him before she passes, he ignored and continued to stare at the wings. Even when Aurora came back, he just shunned and continued to go in his crazy plan to finally kill Maleficent. He still dies tho, which he deserved.
@@thalasowo3373 Stefan was definitely crazy. At the end of the movie he tries attacking Maleficent, who is a super-strong rapid-healing powerful fairy with vast magical powers, with a mere dagger. It's comical. Seconds earlier he even saw the iron chain on her which not only didn't severe her leg/ankle after carrying an adult man in full plate armor, but she didn't even have a walking limp after that. Iron was more of a minor inconvenience for her in this film and Stefan more than anyone should have known her true weakness was drugs which he successfully used against her earlier. That aside, on the topic of deserving, if Stefan deserved death for mutilating Maleficent then Maleficent didn't get her punishment for deliberately putting an innocent child in a coma which she believed there was no cure. As well as for kidnapping Phillip against his will and being a creepy child stalker to someone else's kid for ~15years. Can you imagine if some creepy human living in the woods was able to adopt someone else's child who they deliberately attacked and put in a coma after stalking the child for years? It's absurd. And Maleficent was the only individual around when the child's father "accidentally" died, yet Aurora just blindly believes Maleficent despite knowing Maleficent's history of deceiving her.
@@PyroDrew I do agree with you about Maleficent's very very questionable action. Do you think if she was never betrayed by Stefan she would've loved Aurora, giving gifts without the curse? She was scorned but even grief she shouldn't have eve done that. Her seeking revenge is understandable but what is not good is her directing that anger at an innocent child. Although I feel like Aurora was a symbolism of Maleficent's innocence. Maleficent was naive and gullible in which Stefan took advantage of to get the crown then eventually he had Aurora. Stefan had Aurora by destroying Maleficent's innocence and taking advantage of her kindness. What Maleficent did is reasonable but it's not excusable.
@@thalasowo3373 Well Aurora was blessed/cursed to be "beloved by all who know her", so that implies everyone and everything, including Maleficent, with or without Stefan betraying Maleficent. I agree her seeking revenge is understandable, but Maleficent knew Stefan sacrificed love for power and wealth before, so there's no guarantee he wouldn't do the same to Aurora after the curse either. Therefore, attacking baby Aurora was not only evil and inexcusable, but unreasonable and illogical given what she knew of Stefan. Maleficent was still the innocent victim after Stefan attacked her, but she lost her innocence after she attacked baby Aurora. Maleficent and Stefan didn't just do 1 bad thing once, but throughout the entire movie both couldn't stop being jerks and doing several bad things.

This added reversal part is also a reference that only Stefan would understand; he's the one who told her about True Love's Kiss, but he's also the one who broke her heart and betrayed her. By doing this, Stefan is forced to remember the moments from his youth that he and Maleficent shared, as his daughter's curse reversal literally relies on the very thing that he once gifted Maleficent.
very well said.

Aw yeah, she’s gonna curse that baby to the rhythm of her sorcery~
Oh yeah~ 😏
Anybody tell me why did she.. Curse the child.. Did she hate the queen or??? Im confuse..
This isZoree king stephan is the man maleficent thought loved her, he betrayed her by stealing her wings when she was asleep (the former king ordered anyone who would bring him maleficent’s wing would be the next king and will marry his daughter) hence why maleficent cursed his child. you should watch the full movie 😉
@@adrianogao8243 i watch when it came out but i missed the ending.. On tv so sad.. So instead she should curse the king or queen not the child.. Dont u think... King stefan is selfish. And used maleficent if i was angelina i would be angry at him and take revenge at him too..
I love the way when she was casting the curse, she was looking at the king, as if saying "this is the pain you made me feel and now I'll make you feel it, tenfold."
Yeah of course.
No it's a form of selfishness, evilness and hatred

Do it again."*
That line was so chilling. All I could think about how vulnerable and hurt Maleficent was in the woods, how Stefan had taken everything from her. As horrible as her actions were, I wanted Stefan to eat shit in this moment.
WHY DIDN'T SHE GET AN OSCAR FOR THIS
Yesss
Yesss... Why❓
Because she was lame? I mean, the whole movie and this scene in particular are lame, irony is that Angelina Jolie actually does make some good performance, but being somewhat good in a schlock of a movie isn't enough for an Oscar. Being good in a good movie, that's something different.

Something I just noticed on my most recent viewing of this great movie and this scene: The curse was made to, in a couple different ways, reflect Stefan's past betrayals of Maleficent.
Think about it:
I absolutely love how when Stefan says she's not welcome, she smiles like "you actually think I care what you think" hahahaha

Have you ever noticed that it was Auras parents fault that they couldn't spend time with their child for 16 years and not maleficent

The eerie thing is she performed her so well it’s almost EXACTLY similar to the original animated maleficent. She does amazing acting as any form of magical being in any fantasy movie like this.
Exactly! She uses almost the exact same lines from the original movie!
Angelina Jolie was QUITE LITERALLY the best to play the role of Malficent...HANDS DOWN!!!
this scene is just so iconic
2:55 That part is absolutely epic!
Most badass fantasy character ever!
Thought so until I saw Charlize Theron's Ravenna in Snow White. She didn't have that badass looking magic and wings but she still nailed it. They both couldn't have been better!
@@matter8138 True story😍
She didn’t do anything wrong and now she wants revenge so I’m on maleficence side for a reason
No one cares

Phantom B you cared to comment ya low life troll
Cait Cat Skull Although I think it was very wrong of her to curse an infant who did nothing wrong and completely ruining her life, I do think the king deserved it what he did to her was Horrible .
This is the most iconic moment in all of sleeping beauty history if you ask me, which is why I was so excited to see it in this movie. And goodness gracious, they made it 10 times better. Everything is so good!
The fact that Maleficent was affected by her own curse. "Loved by all who meet her."
