Considering there are cameras present, this is probably the best food that place has ever served and it was still substandard!

I remember speaking to an elderly lady who lived in aged care. She said the worst was that sometimes she’d want cheese and crackers for dinner, or eggs on toast but there was no choice for a simple supper. She had to eat the set ‘mushy food’ - she said if she was at home she’d have choice. I can’t imagine not having choice :(

The sad thing about this is that the aged care facility would have prepared better food on the day of your arrival, knowing the consequences of serving the "usual food". It is similar to when a facility is receiving an "unannounced visit" by the Royal Commission, Accreditation agency, etc, always more staff are rostered on, better food is served, etc.I find it disturbing how many residents are on supplements (Fortisip, compact protein, sustagen) in aged care. Particularly when aged care is so multicultural now, it is impossible to serve each nationality their traditional meals. And for cooks to serve hot, delicious meals to so many residents is almost impossible with all the food texture variables and food allergies prevalent in aged care now. Also understaffing affects food intake, so not enough staff to feed everyone. Bad situation and only getting worse. Good luck Maggie.

I wish we’d address aged care and have an investigation after the report was released during Morrison.

This was an absolute eye opener! Maggie and her team did a wonderful job, but I’m not sure it will convince the bureaucrats that fund these places! 😔

I worked in aged care as a nurse. One evening the patients had two cold chicken nuggets. I swear. That was it.

As an aged care therapist I can tell you that the average aged care resident does not eat very much, so the meals must be nutritious, tasty and visually appealing.

The main problem is that they only allocate a few dollars for every meal served..... keep kitchen staff to a bare minimum.....& use the cheapest ingredients......

Sutton park, which was the home my father was in had wonderful food. Talking to the chef was most enlightening and i found out that not only were the meals appropriate size but residents had good variety. She told me that wherever they can use butter or cream they did as this helped the residents keep weight on which helped when they became ill. They also had everything cooked on site from soups to desserts. My dad who was very fussy very much enjoyed the food. For those who did not want two cooked meals a day there were lighter options with mixed sandwiches, quiche etc. So my point is not all nursing homes have bad food and perhaps the cooks/chefs may need better education.

I worked in aged care both in Auzzie and NZ. The cooks always did their best. Food wasnt allowed to be salted when cooking because of health concerns. Mist elderly cant handle spicy food. Upsets their digestive systems. Consequently the food can seem a bit tasteless . I remember how much salt some of them would sprinkle on their food then complain it was too salty.

The food is so very unimaginative. At my work we have one salad, it’s exactly the same salad they have had for 15 years, no dressing of course. I cringe when I look at some of the food they serve. And the kitchen staff think they do a great job 😫😫😫

Maggie this is such an important issue good for you for brining some publicity to the public. Aged care unfortunately has become a big money maker for investors, which of course means cutting costs. Keep up the good work, you are a wonderful person

Can I add, about bloody time! Nursing home food is appalling. Hopefully they'll move on to hospital food next. I had a friend in private hospital getting cancer cut out and the rubbish he was fed shocked me. It's as if nutritionists don't know what causes cancer and heart disease etc, when surely they must. He couldn't wait to get home and eat fresh, nutritious meals.

Many aged care facilities including Anglicare don’t have a kitchen. The meals are bought in from offsite.

Ohhh Maggie dear and our favourite cook !!
Nobody expects to “ nourish” the elderly in nursing homes…
What some DO expect, would be, to wait for them to “pass” so they can get others in their place,
in order to bring more money into the pockets of the people owning the homes !!
Shameful and disgraceful behavioural policies in many of these places…

It’s the owners of the homes that want to spend as little as possible so they can keep getting their big salaries and profits , all at the expense of the older residents who are too scared to complain

Having worked as an RN in many aged care facilities throughout Melbourne, I can attest to the corruption, greed and neglect in many areas, and food is certainly one of them. There is no excuse for such lousy meals. These people pay a fortune to be in these places, then all their pensions are also taken!! And as for the ACFI and audits, well obviously these are a joke aren't they, otherwise we wouldn't continue to have substandard care in these places where the venerable and elderly reside!

I visited a high end aged care in North Ryde, NSW during lunch time to visit a resident friend. She was immobile and they brought lunch to her room. A boiled egg, a little can of Tuna turned over straight from the can to plate and two slices of canned beetroot. This was served in a very sophisticated way covered with a shiny silver dome cover. My friend has saved a slice of bread from breakfast as she need some bread at least for lunch. However she didn't even eat two mouthfuls.
    This is a sad situation.
However, food served at wedding receptions in Australia are equally bad. I wonder the chefs here know how to cook or they're down under isolated from the rest of the world and still have a mindset of serving to the POW!
Australia's aged care is now multicultural. I understand they cannot serve to individual needs. Yet we need chefs who can cook and understand what taste is. People who ate steak with no salt or pepper are long gone now. At least make the elderly looking forward to their meal times!

As a society we wonder why we can't get enough people working in aged care but they all get berated no matter what they do.......I only watched 5 mins od Maggie Beers the other days and she said that the oatmeal wasn't good because it was quick oats and whole oats has more texture. My aging mum who is not in a retirement village says she cooks quick oats because the normal oats get stuck in her throat.......Older people are much like young kids and you have to be careful what you serve that it can be swallowed easily.......Personally I think nursing homes are doing are doing an awesome job and I think staff in them should be thanked more often.

In rehab, after knee surgery, the food was so awful that you wouldn't feed it to a dog. After ten days, I saw one piece of fruit, a mandarine, for a diabetic. A mother of a staff member had food brought in for her every day. It was appalling, absolutely inappropriate in a hospital setting to assist with nutritional healing. From NSW, Australia.
