This is wild. I made a bottle as per instructions, except I whisked an egg with water, added some fish sauce, bit of vinegar and a couple of salmon skins from dinner, cut holes in bottle and added the bait, then left it. Caught a few flies in the first days, but nothing to write home about. About a week later I went to look at it and..... my God.... it was like a horror show in there. Solid black. I leave the bottle on its side so it doesnt blow over, and once per day upend it so the dead flies go to the bottom, and put it back. The 2L bottle is currently about 1/3rd full of solid flies. It stinks a bit if you get close (within maybe 4m / 16ft), but damn does it work...
(we were getting pestered by lots of flies this year during bbq's, seems the neighbours were being careless with their rubbish)
I don't know why this video doesn't have more views because seriously it is the best DIY ever I wish I had this in my barn at the racetrack this would have been a lifesaver but I have a cat rescue and my animals are on wood pellets and even though there's no cat urine smell for some reason flies are just ridiculous but I'm going to give this a go thank you so very much for the share!
thanks :-)
I cannot stress enough how great this worked! I'm so glad I saw this!
Only thing I did differently was use fresh eggs. They rotted in the bottle.
Thank you for posting!
Hi MD Lady,
Does it smells ?
@@jimcsk yes, but I placed it away from my seating so the flies would go where the smell was.
I was thinking the same, why can’t I just use a good egg, mix it in with some vinegar to it can rot or curdle inside the container, and in a couple of days it should rot /curdle in the sun, and Bod’s your uncle.!!!
If you are placing this in your kitchen, would you have rotting egg smell lingering in kitchen?
@@butterflygirl69 yes. I would not use this inside any room. Strictly for outside.
I'll be trying this.
I've ordered some fishmeal powder, to that add some baking yeast and sugar.
I'm hoping to get close to the dry bait used in the original red top fly catcher as they are awesome.
I'll make some with eggs though to compare.
Your method clearly works great 👍🏻
Thanks, I will also use a plastic bottle.
In the grand scheme of things one of my greatest joys & preoccupations is to trap houseflies & wasps in jam jars. I create some holes on the jam jar covers/caps, throw in some chicken/fish remains & secure the caps. I manage to trap about 300 plus per jar every two days. This may sound revolting to you but I basically abhor irritating insects, specially when they come for the cooking & when one is having meals. Besides, there is a Chinese saying which goes that when one has achieved everything in life & nothing to do there is no greater pleasure than in swatting flies.
My uncle says light beer like Miller works really great also 👌
Beer is great for slugs and snails too 👌
That's exactly what I needed. Your the best. Thanks so much
U saved my day let me do it, and l like your English accent
thanks
I hate flies
Hell yes brother
Great trap. Thanks!
iLived 5 years in Iceland, lived and worked in Reykjavik,I am Danish so for me, it wasn't a huge culture difference, but it sure was for the amazing Nature and wildlife., sadly it's very expensive living there. I especially loved to go to "sund" in the evening and enjoy the hot pools outside while snow was falling down...OMG,I have so many good memories from my time there. Hope to go back again soonOne of the thing I remember from a month-long visit to Germany a few years ago was how I was able to find some really, really good deals on food at the grocery story. Usually it was stuff that simply had to be sold that day or thrown away, and it was marked down considerably. If you wanted to, you could simply walk to the grocery store every day, buy whatever was on sale, and just make a day's worth of meals out of that.
What does this have to do with fly traps? 😋
wow😯amazing,thanks for good advice🙂
Thanks 👍
Place it at least 50 feet away from your home so the flies are attracted AWAY rather than toward your home. And, like you said, the smell.
Seems great, but do you have a bait for indoors?
brown sugar is the best option. just put it in and on the bottle holes
Quick question, is it better to have the trap hanging up higher or is it just as effective on the ground? I live in France & our region is well known for flies this time of year & lots of goat farms!! Cheers
Ya mon good question mon
One way to tell for sure. Build two identical traps and place them at different heights!
Flies don’t care where it is.
What's an effective house fly trap for indoors?
Brown sugar, honey, and water mix
Just popping back to say thanks.
I used your design. But used yeast instead of the eggs. Working a treat.
Not as effective but not as offensive to us in our garden. And less in the house almost immediately.
Nice job. 👍
Brilliant.
Can you feed it to the chickens afterwards when you gave to empty it?
of course but be wary of what u have used for bait if doing so
You'd want a mesh cone trap. Bait on the ground, mesh cone taped into a jar, flipped upside down so the wide cone is about an inch or two off the ground, bait under the cone. You'd need a post of some sort and either a piece of PVC tube sealed at one end to slide it onto, or just tape it down. Flies gather on the bait, and when they fly off they hit the mesh. Since they fly upwards (lots of bugs naturally go upwards blindly as a reflex), they work through the mesh cone into the jar. The cone is taped to the lip of the jar so they get caught by the jar. There are videos featuring this method on youtube, the flies die and they are dry, clean, and ready to be fed to other critters - assuming you tend the trap fairly often.
Just pour onto compost heap when full 👍🏻
Anything less smelly for I side the house like it's still winter temperatures but the days warm up an they are piping out no where all throughout my home during the day it's so annoying 😒
I can smell it from my screen, mate. lol
Ok, I've set this trap up - I'll report back on how successful it is.
7 months later he died
Amazing...👍👍👍🙏
dont let this dry out. the flies will lay eggs if that happens. always make sure there is a lot of water in the bottle so the flies drown
How intense is the smell? I need to figure out something for a bbq to keep flies away but I feel like I’d puke smelling this😂
It shouldn't really smell if your more than a few feet from it, not much smell gets out of the small holes 👍 good luck with the bbq :-)
Field to Farm Awesome thank you 🙌🏼
I watched a ton of these
Doesn’t any one use a battery powered drill to do the holes
If you do it this way the flies would find it equally easy to get in or out.. The serrated edges from this dude's method creates that little more of an obstacle.. minor, but perhaps just enough to keep the flies in.. Ya don't want this method turning into a feedin station for flies...
May god be with you sir.
Good
Fruit fly can be trapped in this process?
Yes, but use cider vinegar.
omg you litraly caught like 300 flys
A did this a week ago and ave caught so Manny fly's am to feart to gan near it hahaha and the eggs turned to mushroom cheese
Utterly DISGUSTING yak! but brother it really works! Just make sure to hang this thing as far from your home as possible and to SWITCH the content regularly. But it works and I've got a house nice and fly-free now.
❤😂
Use a funnel
That's just something else to buy though 🤣
Save $60 bucks
Hello there
Haiiiiii
Why not beat the eggs by putting them in the bottle?
