I really just like big twist living yarn texture but i agree that the pride collection isn't the most accurate. I think they might be trying to make it more "subtle" pride themed than the straight up correct flag color order like how they dont name them after the flags also. Who knows tho 💚
I made a hexagon cardian with the lesbian yarn and my mom told me it was "nice fall colors" 💀 she means well, she just doesn't know the flag colors. But yeah, it's definitely more "subtle" than a literal flag.
I like the abstractness of it! it is great for those who want to rep their colors who possibly live in/around unsupportive people since it doesn't present as a pride flag upon first glance. Happy Pride everybody!
I’m very happy that Big Twist did the pride collection. I don’t even care that the colors aren’t “accurate” to the flags; I’m happy for the representation. It also helps folks who are not out or are not in a safe place to be out. I bought the ace colors not knowing it was a pride collection but thinking it “hey those are ace colored!” It wasn’t until I saw another video talking about the yarn that it clicked. It’s subtle. It’s good yarn. It’s good representation. It doesn’t need to be literal to the flags. They got the colors right. I’m using the ace yarn for a hexagon cardigan and it looks so good. I wish people wouldn’t nitpick on the order of the colors.
I was the same! At the time when I first saw them, they had trans, pan, and gay/rainbow, so I chalked it up to coincidence. But when they restocked with ALL of them, I was like, okay, this is definitely on purpose LOL. I love it :) And the subtleness works! I've had family members compliment the bags I've made with them who would definitely not if they knew otherwise x'D
I feel like these skeins are MADE for scarves. Like when you work up a nice long scarf, it implies all of the colors and has this weird feathering into the other colors. Not a dedicated flag, but still has the spirit... Probably best for skinny long projects, anything too wide might lose the pattern entirely.
Exactly. Depending on what you’re making, the color changes will probably look better in a more random way. If you wanted to make an actual flag stipe it would be easier to use different skeins of the solid colors.
I wish the colors were a bit more even at least, even if not the exact flags. I made a bucket hat with the trans flag yarn and there was so little white, it almost looked like there was an issue with the yarn dyeing. The white didn’t feel intentional because it was about 5% of the hat with the rest of it pink and blue. Noticing the same issue as I use the yarn based on the ace flag, hardly any white at all.
Aw darn I'm sorry they weren't a bigger hit with you. I somewhat like that they aren't so literal. It's like someone who sees it (and knows the colors) will clock it, but random strangers won't think "hey is that a flag?" Thanks for your video and happy pride! Now I have to go buy some for myself!
I'm currently using the bi yarn to make a wee pouch thing and honestly I kinda like that it's not super obvious bc I'm not fully out to everyone yet so for people who don't know it's just a nice pouch but for the people who do they know it's bi pride
As someone who has used all their Pride yarns, I was very hype to hear your thoughts! I love how soft and stretchy it is, and the colors are so vibrant. I don't mind so much that the colors go back and forth. But I DO mind that the color amounts are inconsistent. With every skein, one color always shows up less than the others, and it's frustrating. And for the ace and enby, the white and yellow parts have a lot of dye stains, which I don't like either. I still really like them though, but if they could touch them up a little, put a little more effort and care into them, they'd be perfect. Cheers for the video! ❤ Happy Pride! 🌈
I like how big twist makes their color changing yarn. It's almost like hand dyed but you can till tell the way the colors are it not hand dyed but the random bursts of color is cool. I used a skein of just regular 4 weight acrylic and made a hat and it looked amazing
I mean, to me, of course the yarn isn’t going to work up into the exact look of the flag, if you buy “American” red white and blue yarn, it doesn’t work up into the flag. The whole thing is about the colors included not the fact that they straight up turn into a flag. If someone wanted that they could setup their own pattern to do it. It’s not on the yarn. Not everyone wants to have a flag. This has more subtlety and therefore appeals to a larger audience and therefore might sell more. Some people might buy that yarn just for liking the colors in it. I don’t think the way these work up is a problem imo.
I just comment this same thing! Well not the American flag analogy but that it is flag colors not the literal flag. Also they named it generic names so it could appeal to more people. ❤
Yeah, and if the yarn did follow the flags in the proportions and order the colours were in, most ppl would still make projects that dont actually result in a flag pattern. I think the expectation of the dye following the general order and proportions of the flags is pretty reasonable. And how would you make yarn that would work up into a flag that has stars in the top left corner? That would be the most specific yarn for one set of instructions to be followed perfectly, the American flag is not a good comparison when we're talking about simple striped flags. Anyway, expecting the yarn dye to actually follow the flag they're inspired by =/= wanting a flag in your final work
Hi Kelsie. I bought all the colors this came in and made bandanas. I love all these yarns. I never thought of them as literal flags just the colors of the different flags so how the colors come out of the skein doesn’t bother me at all. They are perfect for bandanas in my opinion. Even small scrunchies might be good. Anyway I love the
hey Kelsie, loving your videos as usual! Just an idea for your “How many in a day series”- maybe you can try to see how many of your own UA-cam patterns you can do in a day!
I have made so many slippers out of all of those except the rainbow and had no idea they were representative of the different pride flags. Anywho they make lovely slippers! Happy Pride month!!
Bought the bi yarn for myself. I personally don’t like how similar the blue is to the purple color. Ended up making a granny cardigan for someone else. I don’t mind that the flag isn’t followed though.
Dang just noticed you added a new video I got to pause it to go get my kids but wen I cook supper I'm watching ya. And I watch your ads even thought I don't on no one else ✌️💖🙂
Personally I love these yarns as they are subtle. For people who aren't out yet, but want something in their flags colors these yarns are perfect for that.
So I bought almost all of this collection and I LOVED it. I kinda figured it wouldnt be in flag order since dying yarn is a pain. The pan flag one I purchased had a TON of yellow in it. But the only finished project I have of it so far is with the rainbow; I made a lantern sleeved shrug out of it and some white yarn!
Hey! Just wanted to let you know that the cotton yarn is on sale and the Big Twist cotton is .97 with 25% off of that! I really enjoy your UA-cam channel. And I love your tutorials! You do a great job explaining things!
I was the one that mentioned the color situation 😅 i wanted to let you know since there were reviews about it and Tony of TLYC mentioned issues with the yarn, love your vids ❤
referring to a vlog from 3 months ago (binge watching currently). With not having a friend to test trying the pattern (when u wrote the rainbow bucket hat one), Try having Ceaser(?) read the pattern out loud to you, because sometimes that is a good way to find mistakes. I did that with my Essays in High school and College, and it amazing how much your own eyes can miss because you're reading on auto pilot, and you know what it is supposed to say, so u might not see the mistakes!
i really like these yarns, they feel really nice for an acrylic, but there’s some very real critiques to be had! i’ve had a lot of fun working them up into things like rectangular cat ear hats. it looks really good held together with a plain color! i used the trans yarn held together with white since there’s a ton of blue and pink in the trans pride yarn. BUT they definitely do not directly translate to the flag. for example you would expect the rainbow flag to be a 6 color repeat. however for this yarn, it’s a 12 (or i guess.. 11? 10?) color repeat, because it does the rainbow forward, and then backwards, with a longer purple section in the middle, and then the red section at the beginning/end is also longer. IN ADDITION to it going down and back up the flag, the colors aren’t in direct color order. you get long red, short orange, short red, long orange, short yellow, short orange, long yellow, short green, short yellow, long green, etc. down to the long purple, and then repeats backwards. so, there IS a repeated pattern, however it isn’t directly like the flag, and it’s a REALLY really long repeat. i think the other ones also have some type of pattern of repeats, but it’s such a long time before it repeats after jumping back and forth and back and forth that it doesn’t feel like a, like, meaningful repeat. the rainbow looks pretty good with a mesh stitch though, so that the jumping back and forth isn’t as weird-looking
the video didn't turn out as i expected buuuuut i loved the colors anyway. i'd love to see you making the same top with the other colors as well, i'm sure they'll turn out great. 🩷💙💜 happy pride kelsie!!
I made some scrunchies with this yarn, and I had to be very particular about the sections I used to make sure I got the colors represented. I have a lot of little balls missing some of the colors now
I bought the rainbow one in bulk last year and can’t stand it for anything really, I have finally figured out what to do with it so I’m making a king size blanket to use as a picnic blanket when out in the back yard.
Hi Kelsie! I usually don’t comment but I just wanted to say how I love your videos. Watching you has become a comfort while I crochet, keep doing what you’re doing cause you’re awesome😊 Also happy pride month!🌈
JoAnn was literally trying to gaslight the ‘phobes with this line. Putting Pride stuff out without putting Pride stuff out😂 Edit to add: I’m really glad you did this video. Now we know this won’t work at all for color pooling😢
I think flat pieces leave a good opportunity to just color change for the flag to be exactly as the flags. But I used these for amigurumi and the people In our Pride Festival loved them. Yes they're not exactly but they're inspired by the colors and I picked a cool weird zombie kitty pattern and I think it worked. For pieces like you make I understand why this doesn't really work. I'd like to continue to make fun amigurumi in this yarn. Thanks for the review. I love your videos
I just picked up a couple skeins of the bi pride yarn today to make a bucket hat and a bandana for my sister 💗💜💙 I also work better with something on in the background, which is sometimes Smosh reddit stories but often your videos now
I kinda like the abstractness of it, but I hate how some colors have way more or less than others. I use the trans yarn to make a bucket hat and maybe 10% of it is white, half is pink, and the rest is blue. I also noticed there was very little white while using the ace yarn, so maybe it’s intentional if they think the white looks boring in the mixture? I’m not sure.
Im currently working on a school project (outfit out of unusual materials) and my dumbass decided to cut up t shirts and crochet pants with it. I swear its so hard but im almost done with the tshirt part (ill change material) and watching your videos keeps me motivated!
that shirt kinda looks like it has a seam on the back, kinda cool. i like the subtle representation better, people who know can tell, and creeps won't know.
I mostly like the back and forth of the colors cus I think when it does abruptly change it looks like I chose to do a color change halfway through the row and it doesn't make much sense when you're looking at it, even though it would make sense for the flag
i've been on the fence about trying this yarn but this solidified it for me, not getting it. i need the stripes to be consistent, i can't stand the color shifting that often. thanks for the review
“Gay people love tote bags” Me in the middle of getting ready while this was playing and I was grabbing my tote bag😭😭 Thanks Kelsie for calling me out like that🩷💙💜
I have the nonbinary yarn. The color definitely hops around in order like the ones you showed and the black dye bled alot. The yellow and white sections have lots of black blotches on them and it doesnt look too great. it definitely looks like I put the yarn in wash with darks and thats what I ended up with. I do really like how it feels and its not super frizzy. I'm using it to make an arimagarumi bat and its workng out pretty nicely. I also like how the names of the shades don't say the flag they are so its accesible to peopke who live in unsafe environments or teens whose parents are buying the yarn that might say no if they knew what it was.
Last fall I got a couple skeins of their pride colors, too. I made a few bandanas with your granny stitch pattern bandana pattern, Kelsie, and I agree with you, I found it disappointing how the color changes were random and irregular and had dye transfer back and forth to an annoying degree. I think bandanas are the most I'd make with it, but your cropped raglan came out really cute!
im currently making myself a bi pride top using the aboc studios crop shirt pattern :) the colors dont line up its moreso little sections of each color and mostly pink…but its a more subtle design and i wasnt expecting it to look exactly like the flag so im still happy with it. its kinda a bit rugrats colorblock 90s vibes. also my yarn goes from pink to purple to pink to blue to whatever…it doesnt really make the classic flag
i agree with you when it comes to these yarns! LOVE the texture and concept, but i wish the color changed more quickly and consistently. i bought it hoping to make scrunchies to hand out at pride, since i hate using individual yarns for each color on small projects. however, it’s impossible to get all of the colors for the rainbow and trans flags onto one scrunchie due to the inconsistent changes ;-; that being said, if you’re looking for a quieter way to show pride (like in circumstances where people around you are less accepting), the subtle names and color changes could definitely be helpful! :)
I used "life" to make a trans pride flag inspired blanket. I think the way the colors are work up nicely if you work them up in a circle or a granny square instead of solid straight rows
i used the nonbinary colored yarn from that collection for a hexagon cardigan! there was definitely not enough yellow and sometimes there was green because of the dye mixing 😅
I'm so glad you made this video! I agree that it feels like a waste if the yarn doesn't follow the pattern of the flags, at least for me. I understand wanting it to be mixed up for those who are stealth/in the closet, but it's a little too inconsistent for me. And now I dont have to waste money finding that out! 💙🩷🤍🩷💙
I bought the spirit and community last October. I didn't pay attention to the names and I thought it was for Halloween. 😂 now I know. It made a gorgeous Halloween blanket
I think they give *vibes* rather than *flag* and I'm okay with that. I think they're pretty I don't know what I'd use them for, probably a cardigan lmao.
Happy Pride month. Definitely just the flag colours. Looks a good yarn. For my bi hexy cardigan I did 4 rounds pink, 2 purple and 4 blue then repeated the colours. The top looks great
I really just like big twist living yarn texture but i agree that the pride collection isn't the most accurate. I think they might be trying to make it more "subtle" pride themed than the straight up correct flag color order like how they dont name them after the flags also. Who knows tho 💚

Fun fact The names are based on the original meanings for each of the stripes on the OG pride flag, namely Life, Serenity, and Spirit!

I’m in AZ coming down from AB and as soon as I saw that yarn at the Joann’s I immediately grabbed it
Im currently working on a school project (outfit out of unusual materials) and my dumbass decided to cut up t shirts and crochet pants with it.
I’m going to my local Joan’s today, let’s see if I can find some of this yarn!
Oh yay you like smosh too!
i've been on the fence about trying this yarn but this solidified it for me, not getting it. i need the stripes to be consistent, i can't stand the color shifting that often. thanks for the review
“Gay people love tote bags” Me in the middle of getting ready while this was playing and I was grabbing my tote bag😭😭 Thanks Kelsie for calling me out like that🩷💙💜
the lesbian color skein is my favorite color. i like the top you made with it.
Would you be able to use the yarn to make your knit hats?
One of the first ones here!!! 😀 I'm so excited
Happy pride month everybody❤❤🎉🎉
I think bandanas are the most I'd make with it, but your cropped raglan came out really cute!
joanns didnt have them all but you did still get the classic acronym lol, l+g+b+t
im currently making myself a bi pride top using the aboc studios crop shirt pattern :) the colors dont line up its moreso little sections of each color and mostly pink…but its a more subtle design and i wasnt expecting it to look exactly like the flag so im still happy with it. its kinda a bit rugrats colorblock 90s vibes. also my yarn goes from pink to purple to pink to blue to whatever…it doesnt really make the classic flag
i agree with you when it comes to these yarns!
I heard that these look good and work up well on the knitting machine
I thought they would! They are so soft I bet they’d run really smooth on the sentro
i used the nonbinary colored yarn from that collection for a hexagon cardigan! there was definitely not enough yellow and sometimes there was green because of the dye mixing 😅
Stoping everything and watching this now 🎉❤
Happy Pride Month, Kelsie!!
Kelsie, what should I crochet on my flight for vacation?
I think they give *vibes* rather than *flag* and I'm okay with that. I think they're pretty I don't know what I'd use them for, probably a cardigan lmao.
Happy Pride month. Definitely just the flag colours. Looks a good yarn. For my bi hexy cardigan I did 4 rounds pink, 2 purple and 4 blue then repeated the colours. The top looks great
I bought a 6 pack of the Lesbian pride colorway. I haven't used them yet, but they are really soft.
