    I initially read that as "How to steal a bottle of whisky". I thought "Tricky Horst"

    Thanks Horst. I inherited a couple of Bushmills millennium malt bottles with rotting corks recently and needed a way to preserve one of them as I was going to save it and drink the other. Parafilm looks like exactly what I need =)

    How about filling the bottle with small glass balls as the level goes down, thus forcing out the air? When the all the whisky is gone the balls can be rinsed and used again

    As a chemist who’s used this in the lab to seal, it’s best to stretch the parafilm as you’re twisting it round

    This is a fantastic idea. I am going to do this and stick a handful of silicone gel packets (the ones you get in vacuum sealed bags) into the fancy bottle boxes. The cardboard probably wonders work but those aluminum caps may help keep oxygen out.

    I have a question. Can you use the gases in the bottle in conjunction with the parafilm?

    I'm curious - how difficult is this to remove once you want to open the bottle?

    I enjoyed your video. I am a chemist and have used parafilm for many years. I do not make it or sell it. I use it with my initials to prevent someone from claiming more than the angels share. I guess you would call it the "devils share". Never use your own initials but alter it in a way that is unique to you and stretch it. I have a large selection of minibottles. I never thought to use the paraffin I already have on hand. best of luck from across the pond thank you and keep going with your advice. Master Chief USCG

      Is ptfe teflon safe for minibottles?

  • @kv9395
    @kv9395 4 роки тому

    U said the older the bottle is the less u have to worry about oxidation. How old are we talking about? Would a glenlivet 18 years count? Or thats considered young and oxidation will ruin it?

  • @nickfosterxx
    @nickfosterxx 8 років тому +5

    Thanks Horst. I think parafilm must be only a partial solution to stopping oxidation, as it is used in plant grafting precisely because it is permeable to oxygen.

    • @ralpha7352

      Can teflon ptfe help?

    • @nickfosterxx
      @nickfosterxx 4 місяці тому

      @@ralpha7352 I tried it and gave up within seconds. It just twists into a thread, super fiddly. I'll always go back to self sealing silicone tape, bonds on contact, easy to apply, you don't need much, but relatively pricey. I'd recommend Tuka brand, having found some silicone tapes to be pretty useless.

    Great advise! Could "cling" type SARAN WRAP be used for this purpose instead of Parafilm?

    • @kareliask
      @kareliask 5 років тому

      Cling film doesn't prevent air from passing through, I'm afraid - its primary use for food is to prevent odours.

    What about inert gas wine preservers such as private preserve ? How well do they work?

    • @pr749
      @pr749 6 років тому

      you still need to avoid the exchange of gas over the years between the outside of the bottle. I think its only useful if you have most of the bottle filled with air. then the quality of the whisky will degrade a lot over the years. Especially as Horst Lüning mentions, if the whisky has a lot of remaining oxidiation candidates(like phenols)

    Listened to you on the video very carefully. Say I seal a bottle with parafilm, and want to sell it 10 years later. Can I then emove the parafilm without affecting the original distillery/bottlers seal ? Can bottles be sold in auctions with parafilm sealing intact ?

    Mr. Luening, a question: I now do this with all bottles, as it may be a number of years before drinking. However, I have three bottles of Bowmore 30 in cermaic bottles. I understand the ceramic itself may be porous. Is there anything I can do? I feel a little silly wrapping the entire bottle in parafilm. Thank you,.

      You will lower the evaporation even further.

    Is it sensible to seal a bottle if you keep it for like 5 years? Also I hope you got paid for this

    I feel so dissapointed now. I have 35 unopened bottles of whisky for 5 years now. I wanted to collect another 30 maybe, but if this is hapenning with them even if they are unopened, damn, don't want to lose the money like this.
