These new stations are just so remarkable. It's an exciting labyrinth of corridors. I wish we had such nice public transit in the States. The multi level platforms, open spaces, and classic tube white panel corridors remind me of something from Star Wars.
If I remember correctly, this is one station where the Overground line passes beneath the Underground line. So the Over is under and the Under is over. It’s like a scene from ‘Airplane!’ 🎞

Came down from Edinburgh last night, spent the day having a look around The Elizabeth Line, taking photos, riding weird lifts, and weirding out at how eerily quiet the Northern Line connecting tunnel was at Liverpool Street😬 now on my heavily delayed train home. It’s brilliant!
Always amuses me how Londoners spend so much thought about which exits to use to save a few seconds here and there on their commute. And yes, when I lived in London I was exactly the same. Now I have two car trains which make those considerations irrelevant and the knowledge that if I miss my train I'm waiting an hour for the next one.
People do the same here in Toronto with the subway. Most people who ride it often know exactly which car and set of doors on the train is closest to the exit on the platform they want.
On the Tokyo underground network there are signs that tell you which part of the train is best depending on where you are going. LU have resisted that because it could cause local overcrowding of trains.

I went to London Comic Con on Saturday and at every stop they announced that passengers traveling to Custom House for Comic Con should use the rear of the train.
Whitechapel Station is well worth a visit, its not boring, its my favorite Elizabeth Line station. The Elizabeth Line, the Overground, District Line and Hammersmith & City Line are all in the same gate line and the walkway above the Overground platforms is just awesome.
It's good that you point out the small things that could be done better (like inside the lift, or that pink oyster touch pad) cause we know Tfl will watch this :D
In Singapore, we have a programme called 'Art in Transit' for all the new MRT lines and stations where they integrate artwork by local artist that's related to the area around the station so each new station has a unique public artwork or even 2 if it's an interchange

It’s amazing what the Elizabeth line has done . Before this line was opened , it would take almost and hour to get from Whitechapel to abbey wood . Now it takes just 15 minutes . The definition of money well spent
Love the artwork at this station. In the Netherlands, when a big public project is being built a certain % has to be spent on art as part of the project.
That was a dramatic ending when Ian said 'what channel' but do like how the dramatic ending made the video ended differently which had me gasping at the end feels like all was needed after was the EastEnders drums or duffs duffs at the end of the video (But sadly video wouldn't be monetised as it copyrighted which honestly is a shame) lovely tour of Whitechapel Station as well

Great review. You noticed that no one is walking to the eastern end of the platforms however there is anticipated to be quite a few people who will be interchanging between the eastbound and westbound platforms, or getting off the train and waiting for another, when the Shenfield branch is connected in to the central core. This is the last station before the lines split so expect it to be busier when this happens. You may also notice platform signs indicating "to westbound platform" and vice versa which is unique to Whitechapel and in anticipation of passengers interchanging.
As an Edmontonian, this is making me jealous! We've got a 13-stop 14KM Valley Line that's been sitting in an Elizabeth-line state of flux/nearly complete testing for years as well and its opening keeps getting pushed back. Nice to see some cities are getting to enjoy their shiny new commuter services already while all we can do is take scenic shots of ours still shuttling slowly back and forth running trials...

Will have to go and see this and all that impressive artwork, the piece you were in front of at the end is the home page for the TFL Go app at the moment The stations are very impressive and huge, certainly have to be prepared for a long walk when entering/exiting/interchanging at them, but what could be better than walking through those amazing stations and inspiring artworks.
Geoff: interesting to see you there at Whitechapel - it's my main interchange. You easily found the Overground Northbound from the mezzanine, but I was hoping you'd also try to find the Southbound Overground from there, because that route isn't signposted. I just happen to know where it is, and it's not obvious.
on that corridor that links the exit to elozabeth line, northbound on the left, elizabeth line and southbound on the right (i think the lift to southbound and elizabeth line is the same lift, im not sure). from the subsurface lines (im fairly sure this is the fastest route from the exit), there is steps leading directly to northbound and next to it, more steps leading to southbound
My sister was down from the frozen north ( Lower Peover ( I kid you not )) for the purple 1 weekend. For a treat we traveled Whitechapel to Paddington on crossrail, en rte to Waterloo. We were both very impressed with both the architecture and the trains.
Agree about the need for more art along those blank platform walls and passageways. The lack of advertising is surprising - compared with the amount in tube stations
Maybe you have said this in another video but Whitechapel is the only place where the Underground is over the Overground! Great series of videos Geoff!
I think another somewhat interesting aspect of Whitechapel (that I don't think was mentioned in the video) is the fact that when the line is fully operational in its intended configuration, this station could be used by passengers switching between the Shenfield branch and the Abbey Wood branch. I'm not sure how many passengers there will be doing this but considering Whitechapel is in Zone 2, it will cost the same fare to interchange here as it would to go through the faff of using the Jubilee or DLR between Stratford and Canary Wharf. I suppose if your destination itself is Canary Wharf then maybe the Jubilee would remain preferable, but it is a very crowded section and more hassle to interchange than what will be possible at Whitechapel so I'm sure this route option will become the default for quite a few passengers once it becomes possible to do it.

First thing I noticed about Whitechapel was the platform artwork - definitely gives the station the most "character" of all the central stations in my eyes.
Geoff I’ve had an idea or two for another video(s) to add to your can you walk faster/which is faster series: - H&C vs Elizabeth line. Whitechapel to Liverpool Street/Moorgate/Farringdon/Barbican which is faster? - Can you walk faster than the H&C/metropolitan line? In the circumstances that you come out the wrong exit. Is it quicker to: A - go one stop on the tube B - turn around and go to the other Elizabeth line exit back along the other end of the platform. C - walk via street level
A few extra non-boring bits about Whitechapel: - the golden Wall at the top of the escalator. - the buildings outside the station: one can be seen in the shot on Durward street (there is a story about its dot pattern), another one is next to Sainsburys (ventilation? But also the emergency exit) and then of course the building over the cavern where the line splits a short walk away. The gold/bronze makes multiple appearances and apparently is a reminiscence to the brewing equipment in the East End Breweries (though shouldn’t it be copper?)
As a non-Londoner, I really appreciated Ian acting as my representative, asking the awkward questions about things that London veterans probably take for granted.

As you are a big rail enthusiast, would you be able to kindly film driver's cab views for the Heathrow Express line, all of the London Overground and all of the Croydon Tramlink and DLR networks? Great point about the art. Whitechapel looks great. They should retrofit more art to the other stations as the London Underground has a bit history of doing so with the famous tiles etc. Bit of a missed opportunity there. And I don't think it spoils the smooth and consistent look at all because it's fairly subtle. Also great points about user experience/wayfinding. They've generally done really well on this line, but there's always room for improvement. Someone high up at TFL needs to watch this.
I remember meeting my first pink touch point and nit knowing what it was. Guilt for not tapping thru though I am sure TFL got their premium payout when I finished my trip
Geoff, it would be good if you could assess how many cross passages there are between the platforms at Whitechapel, given this station will primarily be used for commuters coming from Essex who need to change onto an Abbey Wood train to reach Canary Wharf. This might determine if people use more of the middle of the trains to interchange rather than the ends. I’d like to see the practicalities of this and how this marries up with exits at Canary Wharf.
But those coming from Essex will likely go into Liverpool Street for Canary Wharf or Abbey Wood, or they will go into Stratford and take the DLR or Jubilee line to Canary Wharf

When the full integrated service starts, it will be much faster for people commuting in from Essex to alight at Whitechapel, walk across to the opposite platform, then catch a train one stop to Canary Wharf. Why would you stay on the train past Whitechapel to get off at Liverpool Street then go back again, past Whitechapel, to Canary Wharf? Sure, while the integrated service has not started yet, you would go all the way to Liverpool Street (main station) then take the long walk down to the Elizabeth Line platforms, because that it is all you can do, but this is not the permanent state of the Elizabeth Line; services will eventually enter tunnel after Stratford and stop at Whitechapel. Elizabeth Line full service is not intended to terminate at Liverpool Street mainline station. Regarding Stratford, when the integrated service starts, it will likely take longer to walk from the main platforms down to the Jubilee Line then travel four stops to Canary Wharf rather than stay on to Whitechapel and change there as I explained above. Again, until the full integrated service opens, then sure, changing at Stratford is more convenient… for now.
Given how much was spent on the whole purple thing I wouldn't have thought it would have been too much extra for an east entrance which I'm guessing would be pretty good for the Genesis Cinema & Stepney Green Asda

There's definitely a problem with not enough explanation notices for people who don't use the system all the time. I remember wondering what the pink readers were for when they first appeared.
I was in London last weekend, and on the Elizabeth line! From Canary Warf to Woolwich. I also made several rides on the DLR. I like the cabride view. But I also noticed when the DLR reaches the max speeds it gets very unstable and shakes violently from left to right... The Elizabeth line trains are very comfortable and quite.
@@mushy3424 O really? It could be one or two specific DLR trains, or a stretch of track. I traveled between London City Airport and Bank. And Pudding Mill Hill and Canary Warf. And Greenwich and Canary Warf. And Woolwich Arsenal and London City Airport. It was not constantly shaking, but several times during the ride.
If you need a train to go round tight curves it won’t be too good at speed; if you want it to be good at speed it won’t be that good going round extra tight curves such as the DLR has.
It surprises me that Whitechapel only had an exit at one end of the platform. I thought that since the King's Cross fire, any stations underground were designed with more than one exit from the platform to give an alternative way out in the event of fire.
Not the biggest fan of that artwork but I'll take it over advertising any day. I'm glad efforts have been made to incorporate artwork into these stations.
I tested out getting to my office at Canary Wharf from my front door in Forest Gate - via Whitechapel. I was very fortunate with the interchanges and it took 40 mins door to door - 28 mins time on the TfL network. The interchange between district and Liz was 2 mins, no I wasn’t running (but I did ensure I was in the right part of the District train so that I alighted by the stairs up from the platform). So it may be quicker than either the DLR or Jubilee when the full route is open (my office at CW is very close to the DLR, but Liz via Whitechapel was still quicker) - cost £2. Plus with DLR there can be random long gaps at Stratford, longest I’ve encountered is about 13 mins.

Heh. I live in woolwich and work in Whitechapel/Liverpool St. There always seats everwhere and it's so quick there's no point sitting anywhere but by the door you got on at.
Went from Stratford to Liverpool Street then to bank(was I pressed with the size of the new platform) to join the northern line to Clapham South, decided to see if it was easier going to Moorgate on the way back, no I got lost coming out of the lift, if you don’t realise your at Liverpool Street station and one way wasn’t signed to the Elizabeth Line, another gentleman did the same as me….this is a learning curve. I only need to know this as I normally use the Victoria line to Stockwell and join the Northern line there, but we have rail works on the main line route from Rainham Kent to Victoria some times so if that happens I have another 2 option’s 1 from Maidstone or 1 to Stratford International…
Geoff, how about comparing London's two cross London lines (Elizabeth & Thameslink) through the core area? How they are run, systems used and where they are controlled from?
The 'back entrance' into Durwood Street must make the transfer to Bethnal Green (mainline not tube) station a few minutes quicker. This 'secret' transfer route is not an official OSI, but Google Maps recommend it for journeys between the 'West Anglia' Overground stations (Enfield/Cheshunt/Chingford lines) and stations in SE and S London (Elizabeth and O-G). TfL website says change at Liverpool Street, but the Google Maps journeys seem to be several minutes quicker. Maybe a chance for a 'race' video?
Just found out u can buy lizzie line tickets on trainline, although you have to collect them at the station.....don't know how that would work bc you can't collect them on tfl ticket machines.

I live in Washington, DC and do exactly the same thing on our Metro. I've also passed it on to my son who uses the Metro to commute home from school

One of the reasons why I went to London this week was to ride the Elizabeth Line, really is a great achievement!
A pity the same cannot be said for the North-South Cross Rail line (Thameslink)!!

I was a bit baffled as to why the exit level seemed to be -3 or -2 and yet you were above the level of the trees outside!

Geoff I’ve had an idea or two for another video(s) to add to your can you walk faster/which is faster series:
- H&C vs Elizabeth line. Whitechapel to Liverpool Street/Moorgate/Farringdon/Barbican which is faster?
- Can you walk faster than the H&C/metropolitan line? In the circumstances that you come out the wrong exit. Is it quicker to:
A - go one stop on the tube
B - turn around and go to the other Elizabeth line exit back along the other end of the platform.
C - walk via street level

A few extra non-boring bits about Whitechapel:
- the golden Wall at the top of the escalator.
- the buildings outside the station: one can be seen in the shot on Durward street (there is a story about its dot pattern), another one is next to Sainsburys (ventilation? But also the emergency exit) and then of course the building over the cavern where the line splits a short walk away.
The gold/bronze makes multiple appearances and apparently is a reminiscence to the brewing equipment in the East End Breweries (though shouldn’t it be copper?)
As a non-Londoner, I really appreciated Ian acting as my representative, asking the awkward questions about things that London veterans probably take for granted.

Great point about the art. Whitechapel looks great. They should retrofit more art to the other stations as the London Underground has a bit history of doing so with the famous tiles etc. Bit of a missed opportunity there. And I don't think it spoils the smooth and consistent look at all because it's fairly subtle. Also great points about user experience/wayfinding. They've generally done really well on this line, but there's always room for improvement. Someone high up at TFL needs to watch this.
I remember meeting my first pink touch point and nit knowing what it was. Guilt for not tapping thru though I am sure TFL got their premium payout when I finished my trip

Geoff, it would be good if you could assess how many cross passages there are between the platforms at Whitechapel, given this station will primarily be used for commuters coming from Essex who need to change onto an Abbey Wood train to reach Canary Wharf. This might determine if people use more of the middle of the trains to interchange rather than the ends. I’d like to see the practicalities of this and how this marries up with exits at Canary Wharf.
But those coming from Essex will likely go into Liverpool Street for Canary Wharf or Abbey Wood, or they will go into Stratford and take the DLR or Jubilee line to Canary Wharf

When the full integrated service starts, it will be much faster for people commuting in from Essex to alight at Whitechapel, walk across to the opposite platform, then catch a train one stop to Canary Wharf. Why would you stay on the train past Whitechapel to get off at Liverpool Street then go back again, past Whitechapel, to Canary Wharf?
Sure, while the integrated service has not started yet, you would go all the way to Liverpool Street (main station) then take the long walk down to the Elizabeth Line platforms, because that it is all you can do, but this is not the permanent state of the Elizabeth Line; services will eventually enter tunnel after Stratford and stop at Whitechapel. Elizabeth Line full service is not intended to terminate at Liverpool Street mainline station.
Regarding Stratford, when the integrated service starts, it will likely take longer to walk from the main platforms down to the Jubilee Line then travel four stops to Canary Wharf rather than stay on to Whitechapel and change there as I explained above. Again, until the full integrated service opens, then sure, changing at Stratford is more convenient… for now.
Given how much was spent on the whole purple thing I wouldn't have thought it would have been too much extra for an east entrance which I'm guessing would be pretty good for the Genesis Cinema & Stepney Green Asda
Didn't realise Whitechapel was so massive. I mean the district platforms are pretty big anyway but didn't realise everything was so big even before Crossrail

There's definitely a problem with not enough explanation notices for people who don't use the system all the time. I remember wondering what the pink readers were for when they first appeared.
In their defense, if you don’t use the system much, you wouldn’t care about going a longer way to get your journey cheaper

I was in London last weekend, and on the Elizabeth line! From Canary Warf to Woolwich. I also made several rides on the DLR. I like the cabride view. But I also noticed when the DLR reaches the max speeds it gets very unstable and shakes violently from left to right... The Elizabeth line trains are very comfortable and quite.

I go on the DLR every day and have never noticed such violence. I will need to be careful from now on!
@@mushy3424 O really? It could be one or two specific DLR trains, or a stretch of track. I traveled between London City Airport and Bank. And Pudding Mill Hill and Canary Warf. And Greenwich and Canary Warf. And Woolwich Arsenal and London City Airport. It was not constantly shaking, but several times during the ride.

If you need a train to go round tight curves it won’t be too good at speed; if you want it to be good at speed it won’t be that good going round extra tight curves such as the DLR has.
It surprises me that Whitechapel only had an exit at one end of the platform. I thought that since the King's Cross fire, any stations underground were designed with more than one exit from the platform to give an alternative way out in the event of fire.
Not the biggest fan of that artwork but I'll take it over advertising any day. I'm glad efforts have been made to incorporate artwork into these stations.

I tested out getting to my office at Canary Wharf from my front door in Forest Gate - via Whitechapel. I was very fortunate with the interchanges and it took 40 mins door to door - 28 mins time on the TfL network. The interchange between district and Liz was 2 mins, no I wasn’t running (but I did ensure I was in the right part of the District train so that I alighted by the stairs up from the platform). So it may be quicker than either the DLR or Jubilee when the full route is open (my office at CW is very close to the DLR, but Liz via Whitechapel was still quicker) - cost £2. Plus with DLR there can be random long gaps at Stratford, longest I’ve encountered is about 13 mins.
Great video as always, but I wouldve liked to see the way up and down to the elizabeth line platform on the escalators, the way the majority of us will go!

There always seats everwhere and it's so quick there's no point sitting anywhere but by the door you got on at.

Went from Stratford to Liverpool Street then to bank(was I pressed with the size of the new platform) to join the northern line to Clapham South, decided to see if it was easier going to Moorgate on the way back, no I got lost coming out of the lift, if you don’t realise your at Liverpool Street station and one way wasn’t signed to the Elizabeth Line, another gentleman did the same as me….this is a learning curve. I only need to know this as I normally use the Victoria line to Stockwell and join the Northern line there, but we have rail works on the main line route from Rainham Kent to Victoria some times so if that happens I have another 2 option’s 1 from Maidstone or 1 to Stratford International…

Why don't pink Oyster pads have better signage? Cause TfL make more money if people don't tap them ;)

Geoff, how about comparing London's two cross London lines (Elizabeth & Thameslink) through the core area? How they are run, systems used and where they are controlled from?
The 'back entrance' into Durwood Street must make the transfer to Bethnal Green (mainline not tube) station a few minutes quicker. This 'secret' transfer route is not an official OSI, but Google Maps recommend it for journeys between the 'West Anglia' Overground stations (Enfield/Cheshunt/Chingford lines) and stations in SE and S London (Elizabeth and O-G). TfL website says change at Liverpool Street, but the Google Maps journeys seem to be several minutes quicker. Maybe a chance for a 'race' video?
Just found out u can buy lizzie line tickets on trainline, although you have to collect them at the station.....don't know how that would work bc you can't collect them on tfl ticket machines.
You may be able to collect them on other toc machines
This video got me thinking about TfLs strategy for advertising in Elizabeth Line. Might make up for interesting video!
