At the point of this video he had global aphasia. As of now he no longer has global, "just" aphasia. He struggles with his words, thoughts, names, can't write or read well, etc. but it is much better then this video.

Amanda West I hope your dad is still improving, Amanda. I can only hope to have such obviously patient and loving people around me should I ever have to struggle with something like this. Your kindness really touched me in this video, and I do hope your family is doing well and staying strong. :)

Rest of the cognition is intact
Then him to smile and respond to questions by his facial Expression
That would make it even more better

I came across this video after learning about this in my doctor of physical therapy program. I know it's an old video, but I hope you and your family are well. It's so enlightening to see how strong of an individual you are to remain so positive during such a tough time. This is so scary but so real. God bless you and your family. Thank you for sharing this.

+Amanda West could you tell me how long after the stroke this video was filmed? does he remember life events from prior to the stroke? my brother's was a week ago and he has barely been conscience since... was your father the same way immediately after stroke? sitting here not knowing is the hardest part...I know there's is different severities so it's hard for doctors to guess the extent of his ability to recover....hopefully he recovers as good as your dad

    • @amandawest825

+dwight baldwin this was a week later. Honestly he was almost comatose until this. He woke up & physically was good. He slowly started feeding himself & getting back physically. This was in July of 2015 & today (May 2016) he is driving, and fully taking care of himself. He can't read & struggles with aphasia still but he is happy! I will say that his recovery did seem kind of amazing. He required TONS of patience & was very depressed & frustrated for a long time.

From this video, one week following the initial cerebrovascular accident (CVA) (per the daughter's description in the comment section), this man's communication appears to be more in line with a Broca's aphasia. Typically, global aphasia is severe and there is little functional communication. You don't often see someone regain that level of consciousness and alertness 1 week out unless the stroke was not as severe or more likely a TIA (transient ischemic attack) which is a warning sign to watch the blood pressure and/or cholesterol to minimize a stroke.

Thank you for posting. Good while ago, Maria Shriner said, as her father Sargent Shriver had dementia, he had trouble like this.
    He said...oh, your pretty.
I'm your daughter, she said. He was pleased.
Maria said she would ask if he wanted a drink of water. She'd come back with it and say...hi Daddy, it's Maria, here's your water.
Never forgot what she said. I used it and it works. Orient the person. They see 360 degrees, you're asking for one word out of one book, and we have dozens of shelves ----with books on them.
Fewer questions. Fewer fill in the blank questions. Train them less. Train us more.
I learned that toddlers think in pictures. They have limited experience. When they coughed, I would say, cover your mouth.
Stare blankly....then I said...put your hand on your mouth, they'd all but slap themselves. Cover is a concept.
    Think like your audience.

My mom has global aphasia since the spring of 2016. I wonder what there will be much more improvement or if it's too late for that. She gets very frustrated and upset if people try to help her sound out words or anything like that.

This is not global aphasia, as the definition is, "Global aphasia is a severe form of nonfluent aphasia that affects both receptive and expressive language skills. Specifically, global aphasia leads to severe impairment of production, comprehension, and repetition of language.[1] Patients with global aphasia are unable to speak much; they may be able to say a few short utterances, but their overall production ability is very poor.[1] Furthermore, patients with global aphasia have an extremely impaired ability to understand what others say.[1] Lastly, those with global aphasia are almost fully incapable of repeating words and utterances." Your dad is displaying fairly good comprehension, some grammatically complete sentences, and can repeat some utterances. I am glad to hear that he is better.

You have no idea what he's doing as he meets ALL of your criteria. He doesn't understand my questions, isn't answering correctly & can't speak in full sentences. I'm fully aware of his diagnosis & im sure his doctors know what they're doing. Thanks though!
