from my standpoint it’s less “death and rebirth” and more: the casket is being lowered into the ground and before it can get down there someone yells “WAIT! THEYRE STILL ALIVE” and then the person who was presumed dead (toontown in this case) just lifts up the top of it and also there have been several clones of them made and they’re all just stuffed in the casket like it’s a clown car

Toontown is such a great example of harnessing the power of nostalgia for something more than brief reminisce. It's like handing an old toy down to a cousin for them to stitch back up again. It's something I don't see a lot of people talk about, but it's quite amazing to see.

Growing up with toontown has undoubtedly shaped who I am. When the original TTO went down and everyone and their mom was making their own private servers, I taught myself Python because I wanted to make my own. Fast forward 6 years, and I started college for game design. Even as I stray from that path, the story of toontown's revival is something I hold close to my heart.

As someone who has created Toontown content for over a decade, there really is something truly special about this particular corner of the internet that has kept me engaged throughout my life. People have made lifelong connections, volunteers have learned valuable skills to carry them forward in their careers, and players continue to look forward to current and future innovations that are crafted by passionate community members. i remember i was about to be going into middle school when rewritten first came out and I met a lot of amazing people on the game just casually talking while fighting cog buildings and stuff. One was a college student I asked if middle school would be scary, and he told me not to worry and savor it, and wishes he could be in middle school again (being in college myself now im 100% agree lol). Another one was a father who remade the toon his son made for him in the original game. He would always help me with my toontasks when I asked and was very sweet. I hope they're doing well 10ish years later.

Its great to see another video focusing on the Toontown community. I appreciate having more emphasis put on servers other then Rewritten such as Clash, Realms, ODS and what not. The community has evolved over the years in terms of progress, with the last 1-2 seeming to be the upcoming of a kind of golden age for Toontown with the released 1.3 Clash update, upcoming 2.0 update for Clash, and rewritten's announcements for their huge expansions. Heck, I personally volunteer as a developer for Event Horizon and you taking about how Toontown has been a creative outlet for many spoke volumes on your the research you did on the community.
The fan servers have been alive longer then the original at this time, and i'm hoping to see Toontown just get better both in terms of tools for the community to use such as open-toontown plus more content that makes Toontown stand out as a fan project as a whole compared to others that simply keep the OG up and running without modifications (let me be honest, Toontown's core gameplay gets stale fast). Seeing people appreciate that kind of work that goes into that is a nice surprise all in all.

I'm so happy about this video!!!!! Toontown has been my primary special interest since I was 4. I remember falling into a 4th grade depression when TTO closed, and waiting hours and hours to see if I could get into the Rewritten beta testing. I'm now finishing up maxxing two of my toons on TTR and I'm maybe 1/4 of the way through TTCC after starting earlier this year. All that to say, this is such a great video! The sound effects, the music, the transition from the early 2000s gameplay to modern gameplay, it's all so high quality and interesting to watch and it just made me feel great overall!! I love that you featured fangames that aren't as popular, I've never heard of some of them before! I found Dessert Storm a few years ago and was so excited for it to be something fun and special and like a darker twist on the story, but I agree, it was such a letdown after the intro. I'm really thrilled about Event Horizon and anything and everything else that is still yet to come! I'm someone who learned to draw because of Toontown, actually. I was always so in love with the toony proportions and over the too environments that it's impacted my own style immensely! I've been toying with the idea of making my own slightly alternate universe Toontown comic, and after seeing all the fans drawn to this video, I feel more inspired than ever now!! So yeah, sorry this is so personal and long winded lol but this video was just so fantastic and I'm super glad that TT has touched so many hearts just like my own :)

Man I have such strong toontown and toontown rewritten memories, mostly since my addiction to it led to me getting grounded several times as a kid lol. I had played the game on and off for years, and had only just found out about corporate clash this year. It sucks that nowadays I’m more socially anxious and it’s hard to play and to find the motivation to keep playing an MMO alone, but I find both Rewritten and CC to be both great at keeping the toontown spirit alive

while i never played toontown during its official run, i have vivid memories of playing the beta when i was 7 years old. i remember running through donald's dock during server maintenance and seeing the entire world slowly blink out of existence around me one texture at a time as i ran in place. i also remember meeting another kid who was playing with his dad. it was one of my earliest gaming experiences, and since then i've always liked playing mmos. i used to beg my mom to get me a subscription but i guess a wow sub on top of two asheron's call subs for my older brothers was enough & she didnt want to pay any more.
in the past few years i've gotten back into the game w toontown rewritten. all the music and sounds are so nostalgic. i even had a moment while playing corporate clash a while ago that was like reliving my nightmare of running through the endless void of donald's dock. i love this game lmao

Great video! I've literally been playing Toontown basically since I was born, and I'm turning 19 in two weeks. It's probably my favorite IP of all time and it's so cool to see you talk about it!
Personally, I'm a huge fan of both Rewritten and Corporate Clash. I don't understand why people think they need to be separate. To put it in rogue-like terms, Rewritten is Risk of Rain Returns and Corporate Clash is Risk of Rain 2. Completely different but equally enjoyable experiences. Toontown Rewritten is best for when you just want a classic, quality of life Toontown experience and Clash is best if you want something fresh and new. My only issue with Clash is purely that I think way more people should play it, its so hard to find groups lol
I've never tried any other Toontown games, but I'm super interested in Funny Farms and Operation Dessert Storm (if development is still ongoing), and I'm so keeping an eye on Event Horizon's development. Thanks for the recommendations, and keep up the great work Clue!

I really want to enjoy Corporate Clash but personally I can't get past the inconsistent art design that has overwritten the original aesthetic. one thing i’ve found super interesting about toontown online is that it was an immensely popular MMO but it has so much lost media. i’ve had several people recall and debate on certain aspects and items in the game. such as people saying minnie’s melodylands spinning carousel was only in beta but i saw it after the fact when i played as a kiddo. that’s one example and there’s many more but i find it very interesting and it makes me think of all the lost media from video games and stuff from the internet that was prevalent in the early 2000s

I think I started playing around 2009-2010, and then have played Rewritten on and off since then. I have a few toons that have finished the main task line and have fairly high suit level, i could never be that bothered to grind to level 50 (although rewritten are changing that).
One interesting thing that happened in the early days of the fan servers was the initial server 'rivalry' in the 2 years after the original closed. Rewritten was very popular and so they had a booking system if you wanted to play at the start. The main competing server at the time was Toontown Infinite who also had a strong playerbase and no restrictions on play time. Unfortunately there was some controversy surrounding the developers of the game and it quite abruptly closed (which was a shame as I had made it past Lil Oldman by that point for the first time post TTO).

a family member of mine is on the corporate clash team and its always so nice to hear about updates in advance because even though i don't play toontown anymore (i did as a kid and introduced this family member to the game way back when before the og games closure) i just know every single time i hear about something new in the works, it's gonna send the playerbase (excited) hysterics

what a wonderful video! i played toontown back in the early aughts (2006? 2007? it's been a while), and i came back to it as an adult, starting with rewritten. i've grown the most fond of tooniversal studios (which i am SO glad that you mentioned), but the footage in this has me tempted to check out corporate clash for the first time... i'll have to try it out soon. thanks for the fantastic peek into this fun corner of the internet :] (also, telling people they stink wouldn't be very toony of you)

Yo, I'm super looking forward to Toontown: Event Horizon! Toontown in space is cool enough on it's own, but I saw hidden behind you when you were going over the art (and proceeded to go to the site to double check) they're gonna have *dragon toons*. That is just the coolest thing ever to me, and I feel like I'm a little kid again.

Toontown puts me in awe. As a worm my mom played a lot of Toontown and even I played a little. I never got past Toontown Central, but my mom ground through the whole game and seeing all the weird areas and cog lairs gave me major interest. Right now I'm waiting for Rewritten to finish it's new Playground and Cog Dungeons but otherwise I'm really interested in going back in!

i was always so fascinated by toontown online as a kid, but by the time i got even decent quality internet at my house, i was already obsessed with aqworlds and eventually moved on from mmos to tumblr and youtube being my main internet consumption as a teen. i vividly remember seeing the commercials for toontown as a kid and wishing i could play it, but then i realized not only did i not have internet, but i also had to pay and my hopes were swiftly crushed.

I remember trying to play toontown as a kid but the laptop I had access to wasn’t powerful enough for it. I don’t remember how old I was at the time but I remember exactly where I was: my grandparent’s kitchen table. Still, I loved the video even if the biggest nostalgia for this game I have is the ads that played on Disney Channel ❤

Just to let you know, Toontown Fellowship is 80% based on Toontown Infinite's source code, so mooost of it is not original.
While Clash has significantly more major content rewrites than Toontown Rewritten,
Toontown Rewritten has been undergoing some major gameplay updates recently the last few years.
Field Offices are a very big update with an entirely unique Cog boss that not even Corporate Clash has (non-humanoid boss fight being the Boiler), and they're revamping all the facilities to be less grindy and have new minibosses!

I was too busy playing Maplestory to ever play Toon Town, and I've never been in the TT community, so you'll forgive me for making a joke that's likely been made six million times before: it was brave of Disney to make an MMO that featured themselves as the villains.
