That spider was an orb weaver, they look scary but are harmless. If something big touches their web they scurry away and they're not aggressive. Also some absolutely stunning scenery on that ride.
I lived in Japan for a few months and the scenery is definitely epic. You look so familiar. Just wondering if you were that guy with the Le Col hat blocking the car park at Eastbourne a few weeks ago and ushering people away from that car park...I can't help feeling like I recognised you from somewhere.

If you get the chance check out the hills and forests in the Chichibu area in Saitama. Great trails but I'm a MTB'er so biased.
