Indian railways should reconsider their decision to shift trains from Howrah to Shalimar/ Santragachi. It is causing enormous problems for passengers because these stations are far off from most parts of the city and are offbeat and isolated places. Moreover these stations have no requisite infrastructure, no proper lighting, stations ate not even covered under shed adequately, flooring is not yet complete and therefore platforms are uneven and cause difficulty in walking, no lift for aged and senior citizens, no security in the adjoining areas, place gets totally deserted after 8 pm in the evening and not at all safe for women, no display boards for displaying coach positions, which causes panic and chaos amongst passengers once trains arrive on the platform, most importantly, they are locates at far off places and reaching these stations is a difficult and terrible journey in itself, which would force people to avoid trains originating from these stations. These stations were never meant to be primary stations and no matter how much infrastructure is even developed, their location and distance from most parts of Kolkata would never make them comfortable for people to commute from. This decision has forced most people to skip trains originating from Shalimar and Santragachi, which must be affecting revenue for the railways as well definitely. It is a strange decision that long distance trains and passengers traveling on long distance trains, who would naturally have more luggage with them have been forced to commute from Shalimar and Santragachi, which are difficult to commute from. Whereas, Howrah, which was the primary station, since pre-independence era and rightly so, given that it is centrally and conveniently located, is being used for or proposed to be used for sub-urban railways. In every major city, the city's primary station is located centrally and at a convenient location, for ease of commuting, and Howrah was rightly the primary station for Kolkata, but this strange decision to shift trains from Howrah to Shalimar and Santragachi has put passengers in great difficulty and trouble. Strangely, though Bengal media has never bothered to cover this important issue and know the opinion of people. They are busy covering political dogfight between TMC and BJP. Media should cover this, visit Shalimar and Santragachi stations and see the ground reality and ordeal of passengers. People, like us, who are regular commuters should also unite and lodge a strong protest with the railways to reverse this decision. Situation is so grim that we regular commuters are forced to get down from an express or superfast train at Santragachi and take a local train to reach Howrah with so much of luggage and amidst tge crowdsin local trains, since there is dearth of transport connectivity from Santragachi and Shalimar and cabs charge so high from thesestationsthat it is not possible for the common man to bear such expenses and in fact cabs charge several times mirectgan your whole train fare as the stationsare located at far off places. This strange and stupid decision of Indian railways has been forced on people, who are already troubled by exorbitant fates and deserve to travel conveniently.
