I loved Dawn and Spike's friendship! I was disappointed that their bond pretty much disappeared once Buffy came back form the dead. After that, they hardly had any scenes together at all!

True, that explains season 7. But they barely spoke for the rest of season 6, either. Because Spike was too obsessed with Buffy. It made me sad to see his and Dawn's friendship fade during that season.

Joyce was his first human friend, true, but that is mainly due to the fact that she spoke to him like a person. This was prior to him liking Buffy.

Dawn and Spike's friendship is one of the greatest highlights in this show. Dawn's trust, respect and loyalty was crucial for Spike becoming a better person.
Spike's character arch is what made me realize that redemption is in fact possible.

One thing everyone needs to remember, Spike would NEVER hurt Dawn (At least not on purpose, he did crush her since she was into him and he was into Buffy. but that is not really his fault. He emotionally hurt her but it was not intentional)
Physically, he would never harm her, even without a chip Dawn would be 100% safe around him.
