Nora made my first plastic backed today. Very happy. However to avoid drying out too quickly as it is very wide I added engorged water storing crystals . Have you used these before? Wasn’t sure how much to add in centre if miss, as it can’t be exposed . I have been using for years in the garden as we are always on water restrictions in summer here in Western Australia
Hello! Congratulations on your first plastic backed pole!!! 👏 I have not used water storing crystals before. I like the theory of it. I would love to try it for my next poles. I always need more poles 🤣🤣. Where do you get your crystals from?
Ok I have an alternative for folks in the states, I've been buying and using rolls of Cake collars. Bakers use these to protect cakes, it's completely clear, and it doesn't come in different thickness, so look for thicker ones. I use the 6" wide sheets with a 4" wire mesh front, and the rolls I get come in lengths of 397ft. I just ordered some 12" wide cake collars so I can make a wide "Moss wall", hope this helps some folks.
Hello Great Video Sis here in the Usa i got mine in the Dollar tree in the section were they sell cook supply it suppose to be a cutting salad mat and is clear and thick the only thing is thas is like 12 x 12 but just in case it can be found in Dollar tree 🥰🥰🥰💙💙💙💙
Yessss! I have a few packs of the clear chopping mats from $Tree. They'd be great for starting a plant on a pole! The packaging says the size is 11x14.
I used vinyl shelf protectors I had on hand. Flexible, won't give as much support, but thick enough to not tear. Can find them at almost any hardware store. Some of them have sheets they cut to length for you.
Great idea!! I was thinking this very same thing!! I saw someone use coated wire mesh for their moss pole casing. The plastic sheet can fit in and the mesh offers instant support!
I come from germany and had troubles finding a good solution for myself. i currently use transparent plastic table-cloths/-protectors with a few millimeters thickness, which work very good. You can buy them as large rolls, cut them easily to the desired size and the thicker material adds to the stability of the pole.
Thanks a lot, Nora! I was hunting for an alternative in India and couldn't find large sheets on Amazon, but what seemed to be a decent replacement was clear PVC Fridge Drawer Mats - These are 30x20 cms and fairly thick, yet bendy. Maybe even PVC table mats would work in a pinch?
I've seen vloggers from Asia use clear plastic sheets, the one they used to make clear plastic gift boxes. We don't have it here in the US. Check diy clear plastic gift boxes vids here on youtube, and maybe you can ask them where they got it.
Thanks as always Nora love your videos. I went to an Officeworks in Perth and they are going to save it for me and advise when available. they used to put it on the floor for people to take but it got messy and had little response.
I picked up some offcuts, but mostly narrow pieces, was about to discard, then realised I only needed one piece that was complete, I then layered the strips until I had 4 layers. Stapled now ready to complete process. I realised they will be covered with moss, nothing wasted!!
I am never going back to round moss poles. My next addition inserting a white plastic pole, but rather than using wicking rope own centre and twisting around outside I am going to drill very very small holes along length of pole about 15cm’s apart where I am going to lay my engorged water storing crystals. Will let you know how that works. No misting needed just fill the white pole regularly that has been capped at base - moss always moist - well that’s my assumption.
Hello, omg I absolutely love your channel! I m going from soil to leca and will start making my own tree fern fibre poles! Love you ! I live in UK and couldn't find plastic sheets that I liked (... and if I did they are quite pricey! ) I however had some laminating sheets randomly in my drawer and decided to iron them together without anything inside and they are quite sturdy for smaller poles! ( You can laminate it if you have a laminator - I don't ) , for bigger poles you can perhaps do 2 or more together. I know A4 is quite small but if you make sure you lay them correctly water will not spill out from the places they are joined. I believe you can buy bigger sizes should you need. I decided to try putting my plastic wall on the inside of the mesh for more stability plus it will make it easier to attach, reattach or change the pole for different one. What are your thoughts? Can I ask where do you get your poles or what kind are they ? Also doesn't the metal mesh and metal pole get rusty in the water ? Excuse if that's stupid question. Lastly, I'm happy to say the growing solution you use is available to buy in UK online which I'm happy about! X
Thank you for your kind words and for watching and subscribing, much appreciated! No such thing as a dumb question. See how I put a moss pole in with my plants living in leca here ua-cam.com/play/PLjZ0p9mB4l9einP6Lvz0oDHaztA9Q41mg.html

I got my translucent placemats (11"x17") at Amazon? 50 pcs for $25.99
I go to Michaels(U.S.) and use the clear poster board $1.59
@Jjjj Llll try clear poster boards where you live. They are not that expensive.
Expensive indeed!
The IKEA shelf liner with the raises dots works really well and it’s cheap too!
Thank you.
Oooooh, do the IKEA shelf liners work well? I have quite a few rolls of it but I found it a bit flimsy. How is yours holding up? TIA
@@CazSantiago I haven’t had any issues. I have pulled the zip ties all the way through and ripped the holes a couple of times.

Nora maybe make mesh in a D shape then slide thin plastic sheet in curved side just a suggestion.wire mesh would be built in support.
Fabulous idea!!!! I love it!!!! I will try it!

Thanks as always Nora love your videos. I went to an Officeworks in Perth and they are going to save it for me and advise when available. they used to put it on the floor for people to take but it got messy and had little response.
Thanks Margaret. I hope you get your sheets soon.

You’re welcome 😊

Yay, I live in Australia!!
Yay to that for sure!!!
Great video and finally from Australia as well!
You did a fantastic job at explaining the process Nora!
New subscriber here! From Adelaide.
Thanks for subbing! Great to have a fellow Aussie!
Just got into plants and love you! Dumb question, how do you attach the plants to the moss pole? Thanks so much

Beautiful sister nice video
Thank you. 😊
With the ones that are just wire and moss can I just ziptie a plastic backing over the wire on the back?
yes you can
Would black plastic or plastic that isn't transparent be suitable?
Thanks for the info & the inspiration
It would. Colour is not a problem.
…a Black Australian❤️🤗
Representing!
We were all black once upon a time...
Dollar tree clear cutting boards work perfect and you get 2 for 1.25
Where do you get your leca?
?
What if we put the stake in the middle (inside) of the moss pole?? It will stay still?
You can, problem comes when you want to chop up the plant and the roots are entangled with the stake, it is hard to disentangle.
I sent info from Amazon that I ordered you might be able to use
All the best. Please let me know how you get on.
HooTown 5 Sheets Wire Shelf Liners Fit Wire Shelving Size 24 Inch x 14 Inch, Clear Frosted Hard Plastic Protector Mats for Metal Stainless Steel Garage, Cabinets, Kitchen Shelves, Shoe Rack
How long does it take for a plant to root into the moss pole?
I want to say it depends on the plant and the moss pole being kept moist.
Yu r an amazing lady
Thank you!
