It is the N47 engine. My brother has a BMW320d Msport with the earlier and better M47 engine. He has remapped his one to about 210bhp. Initially it was 163bhp. My brother is a mechanic with 20 years in the trade and deals with many cars and hates the 1-series and even tells me that people that own 1-series don't like them. I've never liked the 1-series or X-series. I'd love an M4 or a 5-series. I nearly bought a classic E28 525i recently.
Definitely feel you on the floormats, I‘ve had the same problem with rubber mats. But I‘ve just screwed them down pretty far back with the screws that are already in the floor and it stopped the problem :)
ashley s I agree- and if you follow up in Web They call a price for such kind part which is horrible. Alpine Hungary should shame on it. If someone know where I can get a new display for this Alpine CD73 for a fair and acceptable pricing - let me know.
Tobias Herrmann its not the display, its the flexi-cable that connects it to the board. Pull it apart and examine the cable; it can either be refitted so the conductors align, or be replaced for a few quid.
I own an e87 118i. My chain was loose, it was easily replaced with my valve stem seals for very cheap. It can be easily solved and you'll have a very nice driving, pretty reliable car.
You must code the cluster with ncs expert to display the cruise control data, and yes, the radio is a problem, be careful when buying a second hand unit, some have Bluetooth, some don't, great vid, goodluck.
My 120d also suffered from the failure. Yet the dealer told me it had been fixed. But I don't know how long it will last. So far so good... This car is hitting 170k miles... So fingers crossed for that.
My mum bought me a 2008 BMW 116i as my first car a month ago, and my car works perfectly fine so far. I've been watching lots of reviews on the e87 after I got it, and I was actually wondering why so many e87s have a manual transmission. My e87 has an automatic transmission, but it seems like the majority of reviews on the e87 all have a manual transmission. I've watched all of your videos on modifying the e87 btw and I just wanna say that you did an excellent job. My car has already had the m-package so I don't need to worry about modification.
Great work Mate, keep up the nice video's about the BMW E87. I love them and your modifications are awesome! Really nice you can keep up with the video's with a full time job besides it. Stay strong and I'm looking forward to the next video.
Love my 116d, striaght piped an mapped, just had a clean as reconditioned engine put in! Runs like a dream got 133k outa my factory chain, serviced ever 9/10k, love me 1series
My experience with a BMW 123d (200hp and 400nm) 1. when i turn cruise control on it shows me on the small window 2. my car still has original mats and they dont get stuck on the clutch pedal 3. the radio disappears once heated up slowly 4. i have the m sport version and the ride is harsch but perfect when you are driving fast 5. on the 123d the gear ratio is fucked up and 6th gear will have higher rpm than the 120d resulting in lower mpg (they did this to achieve the 7 second from 0 to 60) 6. there is literally no space for the rear passenger but boot is decent size 7. around 130 000 miles i had to replace front shocks and top mounts and injector copper seals 8. you havent mentioned the swirl flaps problem which can cause engine damage but when i took mine out i was lucky as they were very loose and they would have fallen in the engine very soon, also the inlet was very gunked up from the egr so gave it a good clean I think those car do have a share of problems like pretty much any car, its more for the people who care about the care, if you havent got any clue about this car you should stay away
@Aris Alpha i mean all the gearings are short obviously yoi dont use 6th gear for 0 to 60 but when you are doing 70 on motorway on 6th gear you end up with 2200 rpm instead bof 1900 or 2000
Hi Mat, congrats on the channel, and keeping it interesting! The 1 series is a fantastic car, but I have to mention a few points about what you covered (in no particular order): - As far as I can tell, those aren't OEM BMW floor mats. - The DPF regeneration process requires the glow plugs to be operational, or it won't work (I have a UA-cam video about this if you are interested in the technical reasons). - All N47 engines will terminally self destruct, and you are getting close to the upper end (mileage) of when that happens. If you get the engine out and fix the issue then it will be expensive, but your engine will be saved (there are cracking issues with the timing sprocket as well on some N47 engines - which is integral to the crankshaft, so a new crankshaft is needed too). If you ignore it, then you will be up for an engine replacement as a broken timing chain will destroy all of your valves and pistons. Not BMW's finest engine...
@@danieldixon3604 I have heard of cars with as low as 60k miles self-destructing, but more usually double that. That engine should have been recalled. In the US there was a class action lawsuit about it, but I didn't keep an eye on it to see if it was successful.
I have seen 200k mile N47's without problems. It depends on luck and how well you maintain it. A specialist told me the rockers break if the piston hits the valves. BMW only recalled N47 engines upto the very start of May 2009. Cars made after this got a revised crankshaft pulley and crankshaft so it wouldn't stretch the timing chain.
Had the 118d in this model the windows used to creek when driving I had to have a new radio display lucky done on warranty there are specialist company's that will do the timing chain on the n47 but still going to cost over a grand it's engine out to do good luck love the vlogs
Annoying thing is also the front windows when it gets cold and they stick due to the seal getting frozen. Running a card between that and the window usually sorts it though :) I had an issue with the ABS rings on the rear of the car which was causing the ABS to kick in randomly sometimes making it undrivable. These can be replaced independently though. I bought them online and got them fitted for £80. Another garage was wanting over a grand for a driveshaft replacement so was a good saving lol. BWM's of this era also get an issue with the light coming on that says that you have a faulty light even though you dont. That on mine is to do with a faulty contol module which is located in the driver footwell. £600 to get this replaced apparently and the guy at my local BMW specialist has said its fine to just leave it. Hope this helps a few people out :)
Same engine on my 09 118d, 133k miles and going strong, spent the first year in paranoia listen to the chain every second, as you said if it goes it goes
M47 does not have cam chain failures. They are strong engines. N47 is more prone to chain failures. If your chain is rattling, I would advise you get it sorted. Bmw 1 series owners page on fb - few mechanics on there who can advise you further
Pretty much bought a BMW E82 2010 123D Coupe because of this, the car has not long had it's Timing Chain and parts replaced which is a massive win before i purchased it. Funnily enough was a secondary school friends car just before me, weird how things play out. 96K Miles, Full CIC Display, Combobox which i've yet to completely code however will probably scrap it as it's mostly for Iphones... Rip out the Sound System and Amp in the boot and replace it with a dual amp setup potentially which will control all the front speakers - rear deck speakers which i'll be switching to 6x9's and potentially a boot based subwoofer. Need to rip the wheels off though! Need to take a steel brush to the Break calipers and plate due to rust, then to paint! :D Hopefully all goes well!
We have 120d m sport 2006. Got 118000 on the clock. Had a new turbo and also a new bcm I also installed new locks all round been a brilliant car and for the size it ain't half a cracking motorway cruiser
Very harsh, I’ve been driving the 120d M for three years and not had any problems. It been a good and pleasant car to dive. The only problem I find is that it invokes a unhealthy rage from other road users of all ages sometimes. If you keep it clean 🧽 this stops this. Why! I do not know! Can not understand why because if you wanted to show off, you would get a more powerful model. Overall I’m glad I purchased it compared to other brands I could have chosen from.
So my 1series is actually automatic transmission and I'm also the infotainment/radio display tends to do the exact same thing as yours(it starts to fade away after the car is on for quite some time), all in all Nice and very helpful video 🔥💪
WOW! I had no idea that your pedals are the same way as our left side drive cars are! That should make things easier incase I had to drive a right side drive car.
I even get this on my 2016 F21 116d. Between 6 - 13mph is a dead spot where you just cant seem to have a correct gear. I can either lug the engine severely in 2nd, or try to rev match into 1st gear but usually even at 2.5k revs I get a judder.
n47 engines are a ticking time bomb. my 120d just costed me a engine rebuild due to the swirl flaps getting sucked into engine. i will strongly advise getting them removed before it happens. a engine rebuild (timing belt+swirl flap delete) later it now works lovely, very economical too (70mpg on motorways stock).
Yup, clutch pedal catches the mat, Professional head unit display distorts in heat, and auto wipers don't work properly. She grinds going in to gears when cold, other than that its a ace lil car. 118D on 133k
E87 is a good car! Friend of mine has got one. It has covered 350K and still going. That equals 14 times around the equator of the Earth. He had to replace the timing chain though
He replaced it at 190k approximately. I would recommend to replace it before it starts rattling when you have a chance to find a good and reliable mechanic
damn 350k! I've got one for a bit over a year now with 160k. Just got some work done on the engine (not very cheap). Hopefully it can go for at least another 100k.
haha my BMW 118D did that with the screen & them the timing chain destroyed my engine. Had it 2 years no problem, no signs then one cold morning just went bang. worth it for the 2 years though! you literally had every problem i did haha but loved it the car
The torque has nothing to do with the rpms and speed, except that more torque will make you reach a certain speed faster. The speed which you are going is determined by the gear ratios in your transmission and differential. You can have both 250 and 500 Nm but the rpms will stay the same for 30 mph.
Having a bmw one series at 70000 miles and spending 820 this week to get the chain fixed I can tell you that this is the most common issues with these cars no matter if the chains at the back (n47 engine) or the front like my 2009 116i ( N43 engine). Made me lose faith in BMWs as a first time buyer.
If you are in the States, ignore this video. The E82 coupe and E88 conv. models were sold in the USA. Engines were 3.0L sixes in turbo 135i and non turbo version 128i.
Got the chance of buying a 2006 120d sport for 3k, 26k miles, it’s not moved for 5 yrs as been in storage. Seems a great buy should I be worries that it’s not moved for so long.
kinda but not too much just get it moving and do the oils etc shud be fine. I recently got 2007 118d for 1.5k with 113k miles did about 1k miles and loving it so far hopefully no chain problems soon
The DPF has a fuel injector which clogs, change that and it will be able to do the regen. It’s way cheaper than a new DPF and the economy will return.I had that problem with my DPF.
I owned a 120d SE coupe (07) then a 123d msport coupe (10) then a 320d msport with the full auto sport box. Recently had a 320i from new and just picked up a 2010 120d e87 as my motorway mile munching commuter. As soon as you mentioned the mats I knew you'd say that. It constantly happened and with the new 320s if it doesn't butt up exactly to the foot rest then your heel slides off the accelerator on this weird bit of plastic. As for the gear ratios, never a problem in the auto's, the 2l diesels always felt made for automatic gears. One thing you didn't mention - the auto open boot that doesn't actually open!! it's the most irritating thing ever....
Yea mate, the samething is happeningwith my radio. It has been so frustrating changing stations, inputs etc. Sucks to see it might be a common problem.
Lol not many people know how to service a BMW properly even the garages it is a lot more than a oil, fuel filter change because of how the engines work - the parts you cannot see that clog - the hose pipes that crack at the back of the engine - the oil diaphragm on top of the rocker cover sealed and what happens when the EGR is pushing dirty oil and contaminants intot the engine bay - plummets on fuel economy - pressure leaks - and et, all.
@@spencerhulme1203 Agreed, this is why my BMW goes to a BMW specialist, the indy I've used for years didn't know what the fuel filter interval was so I binned them off
The chain problem is only on N47, not m47. And in that case isn´t a chain failure its a failure from differents parts of the motor, that makes a chain failure. If you change those parts before, is cheaper, you´ll don´t have that chain problem. If you don´t change oil in the time, you too have that problem. It´s esay if you make a correct manteinance the problem probably will not appper.
I have the same car and the chain got loose and "jumped off".. luckily the car didn't start and the engine stayed unbroken. We didn't need to change the chain, just the "tightener".. ? Idk something like that, but now I'm worried how long will it stay tight untill it goes too loose. Love the car tho! I wish it was as cool as yours.
I have a bmw 116i 2005 and my timing chain popped off over night lol parked up after work and next morning engine dead. Managed to replace the timing chain for less than £200 and car drives fine now.

Its not a "120d Problem" its a Problem of the n47 Engine. The cruise Control "Problem" is easy done with coding (Carly can do it). If the cruuse control came from factory it shows your speed for 3 sec.
I had a 120d m sport as a company car. Good speed but you know what with the hard suspension, heavy low geared steering and also heavy clutch, I preferred driving my ford fiesta zetec 1.25. The reason nobody choose these beamers for company cars is they are just not very comfortable cars. Much sooner have a focus or golf.
Mate... all those issues that you are experiencing are also related to the age and mileage of your car, and specific to you :). I have an 116d eff dyn from 2015 which is in good condition, although when I bought it I had to replace the batery and the wiper motor, but that's it!
Yep, the radio problem is common on these. Youre lucky you have the box in the top of the dash as you could kill two birds with one stone and get an iDrive style android head unit that mounts where that box is. Looks properly smart.
@Mat Armstrong dont let it blow up get that chain done that car has loads of life in it. Dont do bumpers and such before the engine you have a good car there 👍
i have the same issues with cold startups. kinda lumpy but after a few seconds it clears and runs sweet all day. Could be glow plugs , glow plug relay or dodgy injector. No fault codes show up though, also have the issue with the head unit when its cold its fine but when its warm it fades until you cant see it any more. Really hope you sort that cold start issue so i can figure mine out lol.
At 100k+ you expect the chain to go with these apparently but changing the oil 7-10k rather than 20 as BMW suggests should keep the problem at bay apparently The radio thing seems to only be an issue with you
That’s why I bought mine from a BMW main dealer with 2 and a half years warranty as I knew they were problematic xD Within the first year the chain began to rattle only for the DPF to fail at the same time. The following year one of the tensioners in the chain randomly failed and it was back in again for another chain replacement. All this was covered by the warranty which added up to about €5000 in parts and labor including the two rear drive shafts. Great car, nice engine, absolute insanity to buy one privately lol.
If the chain is rattling in the interval where you should be changing gears (1800 rpm - 2000 rpm on petrol) then it means that it's not tensioned properly. I had this issue on my 1 series 2011. After paying several times and going around trying to get away from changing the transmission chain in the end I had to do it at around 50k. Due to the fact that the car is rear wheel drive it's not worth changing just the tensioner as the piece can not be found separately therefore the whole transmission chain assembly had to be changed. cost me around £700 - £800. Got 67k on the clock now and nothing serious to complain about. The car has several design flaws one can learn to live with and I love driving it. - I have the "part leather" seats version - after wearing some jeans with metal studs on the back pocket the top layer came off revealing that its actually faux leather, (bought the car second hand so don't know if the car was advertised part leather or just faux leather) - window buttons placed in clumsy position. - door handles placed uncomfortably towards the front of the door, looks nice but they are rather clumsy but one gets used to them, - as other reviewer pointed out, you can't fit tall cups in the cup holder as it gets in the way of the gear shift stick - small glove box, small door compartments, - I wish the car would lock windows automatically when locking doors, twice I left my windows open and had the car flooded with rain, - don't buy the car if you would need to often have people in the back as the space is very limited (more recent models are much more spacious though)
Long life services add to chain wear. I had afew n47 engines in different models afew years back and serviced them every 10k or 12 months MAX. Never had an issues. Earlier model n47s used crappy Mitsubishi turbos which always failed early, 08/58 these changed to Garret turbo which where much stronger but again regular services keep the turbo healthy
peter mackay chances are it’s already been changed at some point or rebuild by now, if it hasn’t and still running fine then I wouldn’t worry. If it does go it would be a straight switch, or a good turbo place can rebuild with upgraded bearings which are much cheaper
It was a nightmare really, the timing chain apparently skipped and somehow the engine seized but I was 4 days out my warranty so I had to pay for an independent investigation to prove the damage would of been there at the time of the finance being taken out luckily he saw enough to determine it would have been and the finance was settled, I didn't wanna pay for a new 116i engine because it wasnt that admirable to me to be worth a 2k engine plus mine had only done 68k I'd done 2k miles in it before the issue. I'll look at the report I have and get back to you
@@richbillany2795 that does sound horrible. Lucky you were able to proof it! I hear both good and bad things about the 116, more good than bad though. A problem that always comes up is chain tensioner failure. I suppose that was also what you're describing.
Yeah that's pretty much what was the problem, I will say though I removed the backbox and popped very nicely on startup and sounded nice when rev match downshifting
Not just the 120d. Its all both petrol and diesel between I believe 2007-2012. Dont have the issue with the floormats and ive got official mats still. RPM is RPM, gear ratios can be changed on a map but I dont see how this is an issue, if youre cruising you should be in a high gear.
All e87 120ds have a slight “chuffing noise” this is due to something to do with the diesel injection or something if you research it a little more. Not always the timing chain.
How would this car go off-road? Nothing crazy but just curious because of how low it looks? PS I know nothing about cars so please don't hate 😧 My partners about to buy the 2005 118i and I'm trying to learn as much as I can 💩
My wife's always wanted a 1 series and we're now in a position to get one for our next car. I have a 2010 Astra atm and can't help but think the BMW interior looks a bit dated in comparison.
Is a 1 series going to be expensive to insure with only 1years No Claims Discount? Almost about to get my 1years NCD and want to upgrade from a 1.2l corsa to a 1 series🙏🏼 all replies are greatly appreciated I’m 18 but will be 19 in January (when I get my NCD)
If you think the gears are a nightmare you should try my 123d it’s horrible how short the gears are, I’m in 4th doing 30 and by 55 it’s in 6th and if you want to be steady 70-80 on the motorway it’s 2700 RPM-3200RPM it just feels like you are burning fuel off for the sake of it, I miss my old 118d it was so much nicer to drive
Cool trick 4 you mate get in the car shut the doors turn the engine on by pressing button then turn it off pull key out the put foit on clutch and prest the start button with out the key in
Them matts are ebays finest not oem bmw. In my bmw I’ve got original ones and they fit perfect not catching as well as don’t have that like additional resting piece. They are much more plush oem matts
thought they looked different from mine. but i do have the same problem and its a pain in the arse. they stick to the floor with velcro pads which are glued onto the mat (and floor). after a while the ones on the mat basically come off so the mat slips forward and the clutch pedal catches it. my biggest gripe is that there is no cupholder!
My mrs 120d sport is a fun little car, nice to drive at 10/10ths and will go sideways at ease, but she cant get 55mpg out of it.. 50 at best unless gliding down a hill with the wind behind you.
I have heard recommendations of WEEKLY long drives to clean the DPF. This was for like a mazda or something. They're just not built for short run trips although MOST smaller cars DO smaller trips, because many cheaper small cars have seats too crap to do long drives. I had a boss who told me how bad long trips in his mitsubishi mirage were.
Is DPF delete legal in UK? I had to sell my Audi a3 8p 2.0tdi 170bhp because the bloody DPF filter was playing up... When warmed up on motorway it was pretty much silent miles muncher so comfy and 50mpg no problem.. Wanna get the 2.0tfsi but again this engine is also troubles😭😭😭 In my eyes the a3 8p sportback before face-lift in the right "black' colour still looks amazing even today... But the only reliable engine is the 1.6 16v 100bhp which is just SO SLOW!! the car itself its the best hatch from its era by far but let down by the DPF or the TFSI problems.... And I don't own petrol station to run the 3.2 quatrro😢😢 the cherry on the top❤️
Everything is fixable and preventable, even the cam chain stuff, just change oil every 10k km. But the gear ratios, THE GEAR RATIOS! How did bmw mess up so bad. I always find myself doing 10kmh over or under the speed limit because of the dumb gear ratios. Btw, anyone looking for a manual bmw look into clutch delay valve beforehand. It's the dumbest thing, makes you feel like you don't know how to drive a car, for me it took good couple of weeks to get used to it. Otherwise very nice daily car, pulls good (7.5s 0-100), comfortable for a hatch, but handles well, m package suspension is great, just fun to drive around. Much, much better than any daily hatch from this era.
2000rpm at 30mph is right if your under that's good but not to under. car in motion needs to be around 2k... you should be in 3rd at 30mph.... change gear every 10mph rule of thumb.... to get my van moving with full load I have to force it 30mph in 2nd doing about 2700rpm lol.... if change gear it don't like pulling at 2000rpm... but that's a van... all my cars I've had some sound loud but 3rd gear at 30mph is fine
i had two bmw 116i sport on my 2nd the cam chain snapped and went into my oil sump cost £1500 to fix at bmw and that was with a good will gesture due to all the complaints
bought an e87 120d used in 2015, fast forward to 2019 I've changed distribution chain, turbine, and removed dpf... now it's perfectly fine but I spent 4.500euro. If I just knew this before...
@@rafaeljimenez197 specifically for the chain I don't remember sorry... If you search for catalogue online you can find it but it's not a big deal...
Lol 😂..too watch this now after getting to know the Matt we all grown to love…you have come so far bro well done.
Definitely feel you on the floormats, I‘ve had the same problem with rubber mats. But I‘ve just screwed them down pretty far back with the screws that are already in the floor and it stopped the problem :)
Definitely a common problem with the LCD. Same with that compartment

I agree- and if you follow up in Web
They call a price for such kind part which is horrible.
Alpine Hungary should shame on it.
If someone know where I can get a new display for this Alpine CD73 for a fair and acceptable pricing - let me know.
Yep i agree, same problem on my E82
Tobias Herrmann its not the display, its the flexi-cable that connects it to the board. Pull it apart and examine the cable; it can either be refitted so the conductors align, or be replaced for a few quid.
I own an e87 118i. My chain was loose, it was easily replaced with my valve stem seals for very cheap. It can be easily solved and you'll have a very nice driving, pretty reliable car.
Everyone here are saying its very expansive to change the belt (1-1.5k euro) how much did it cost you
VERY CHEAP ?? HOW MUCH DID IT COST U ?? , IM THINKING OF GETTING MINE DONE IF THE PRICE IS FAIR , THANKS IN ADVANCE
HAHAHAHA My floor mat also gets the clutch stuck
as soon as you showed the mat I knew what you was going to say because it does my heading aswell on mine
My parents got me a 2008 116i too but in manual lol its a great first car and would probably last me a couple years since it has under 40k miles
Any problems so far I want to get one as well but I see so much slander on it?

Great work Mate, keep up the nice video's about the BMW E87. I love them and your modifications are awesome! Really nice you can keep up with the video's with a full time job besides it. Stay strong and I'm looking forward to the next video.
Love my 116d, striaght piped an mapped, just had a clean as reconditioned engine put in! Runs like a dream got 133k outa my factory chain, serviced ever 9/10k, love me 1series
Hi, i bought 116d and i want to know did you have any problem with engine?
Hp after remapping?
@@giovanni9402 I read they can have 190hp with stage 1
Always kept it real from day, been here since 20k
My experience with a BMW 123d (200hp and 400nm)
1. when i turn cruise control on it shows me on the small window
2. my car still has original mats and they dont get stuck on the clutch pedal
3. the radio disappears once heated up slowly
4. i have the m sport version and the ride is harsch but perfect when you are driving fast
5. on the 123d the gear ratio is fucked up and 6th gear will have higher rpm than the 120d resulting in lower mpg (they did this to achieve the 7 second from 0 to 60)
6. there is literally no space for the rear passenger but boot is decent size
7. around 130 000 miles i had to replace front shocks and top mounts and injector copper seals
8. you havent mentioned the swirl flaps problem which can cause engine damage but when i took mine out i was lucky as they were very loose and they would have fallen in the engine very soon, also the inlet was very gunked up from the egr so gave it a good clean
I think those car do have a share of problems like pretty much any car, its more for the people who care about the care, if you havent got any clue about this car you should stay away
The 1 series is a fantastic car, but I have to mention a few points about what you covered (in no particular order):
- As far as I can tell, those aren't OEM BMW floor mats.
Would you say theres a common mileage for when its most likely to occur?
I had the same radio screen fault on my Mini Cooper s before I sold it for my one series. So far so good on the bmw🤞🏻
Jake Sparrow I’ve got it on my e87 once its warmed up
Minis are basically BMWs anyway. You'll even find a compliance tag somewhere saying it's made by BMW.
Happens on my 3 series as well
Radio screen problem is really common. You can change the screen or the entire radio. Nowadays you can get those radios from a junkyard for like 50€.
Lube with Vaseline - fixes that , not loads , just a smear
Same engine on my 09 118d, 133k miles and going strong, spent the first year in paranoia listen to the chain every second, as you said if it goes it goes

M47 does not have cam chain failures. They are strong engines. N47 is more prone to chain failures. If your chain is rattling, I would advise you get it sorted. Bmw 1 series owners page on fb - few mechanics on there who can advise you further
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a lot for the upload mate
Hopefully all goes well!
I personally love the 1 series and the TT
Best comment I heard all year
WOW! I had no idea that your pedals are the same way as our left side drive cars are! That should make things easier incase I had to drive a right side drive car.
Appreciate you doing this man! 🤜🏾
Love my 118d but I get into situations where I’m going too fast for 1st gear but too slow for 2nd gear, it’s so annoying
Damn, I thought I was the only one
Tom Hornsey and then you put it in 2nd and there comes the wiggle.
I even get this on my 2016 F21 116d. Between 6 - 13mph is a dead spot where you just cant seem to have a correct gear. I can either lug the engine severely in 2nd, or try to rev match into 1st gear but usually even at 2.5k revs I get a judder.
Yeah I had the same problem but you need to be gentle with the clutch when changing 1st -> 2nd
Omg this 👌
n47 engines are a ticking time bomb. my 120d just costed me a engine rebuild due to the swirl flaps getting sucked into engine. i will strongly advise getting them removed before it happens. a engine rebuild (timing belt+swirl flap delete) later it now works lovely, very economical too (70mpg on motorways stock).
Do you know if the 118ds have swirl flaps?
@@danieldixon3604 im also inter3sted in this

Yup, clutch pedal catches the mat, Professional head unit display distorts in heat, and auto wipers don't work properly. She grinds going in to gears when cold, other than that its a ace lil car. 118D on 133k
E87 is a good car! Friend of mine has got one. It has covered 350K and still going. That equals 14 times around the equator of the Earth. He had to replace the timing chain though
At what mile did he change the chain?
Yup bmw have different gear ratios apart from other cars, just get used to break speed limit 😝🤫
Loving vids on the 1 series. Give us more bro !!
Can you try do some mods on the interior 🙏🏼
Keith scovell what is DPF is just doing research on my Bmw issues
Took the mats out they drove me mental! Kept catching the clutch aswel
I love your videos, I cant wait to get my own bmw 1 series and get it modified too
Thank you!!! 👍👍
Yea mate, the samething is happeningwith my radio. It has been so frustrating changing stations, inputs etc. Sucks to see it might be a common problem.
If you don´t like change your radio. My E82 has the same in the radio, but it doesn´t matter..it sounds well.
Way to avoid the timing chain failure is to have a car that's been serviced properly
I have a remapped e87 120d. 4th gear at 30mph is fine and it has enough torque to pull away.
Just change the tension bolt 20 quid part - it is pressurized and mark down and keep records of the parts you have changed for the future.

Im considering a 123D for track abuse. The stock sequential turbo setup gives alot of room for a big single turbo setup😏
Doesn't the 123d have two turbos stock from factory?
Yep, the radio problem is common on these. Youre lucky you have the box in the top of the dash as you could kill two birds with one stone and get an iDrive style android head unit that mounts where that box is. Looks properly smart.
@Mat Armstrong
dont let it blow up get that chain done that car has loads of life in it. Dont do bumpers and such before the engine you have a good car there 👍
Yep, the display for the radio turns to fade as the temperature in the car rises. It’s advisable to set your radio station first thing in the morning.
i have the same issues with cold startups. kinda lumpy but after a few seconds it clears and runs sweet all day. Could be glow plugs , glow plug relay or dodgy injector. No fault codes show up though, also have the issue with the head unit when its cold its fine but when its warm it fades until you cant see it any more. Really hope you sort that cold start issue so i can figure mine out lol.
Greaat video. I have literally subscribed today. Keepnit up. Did u have any issue at mot with dpf delete
At 100k+ you expect the chain to go with these apparently but changing the oil 7-10k rather than 20 as BMW suggests should keep the problem at bay apparently
The radio thing seems to only be an issue with you
Muhammed Patel that radio issue is massively common across all e8x e9x models
@@philld7500 interesting didn't know that! Well guess a dab replacement is something I'll have to look into
Timing chain timing chain and timing chain. All I hear on the Facebook groups for N47 engines 😂
Cruise control is probably retrofitted and not correctly programmed in the Kombi unit
- I have the "part leather" seats version - after wearing some jeans with metal studs on the back pocket the top layer came off revealing that its actually faux leather, (bought the car second hand so don't know if the car was advertised part leather or just faux leather)
- window buttons placed in clumsy position.
- door handles placed uncomfortably towards the front of the door, looks nice but they are rather clumsy but one gets used to them,
- as other reviewer pointed out, you can't fit tall cups in the cup holder as it gets in the way of the gear shift stick
- small glove box, small door compartments,
- I wish the car would lock windows automatically when locking doors, twice I left my windows open and had the car flooded with rain,
- don't buy the car if you would need to often have people in the back as the space is very limited (more recent models are much more spacious though)
Long life services add to chain wear. I had afew n47 engines in different models afew years back and serviced them every 10k or 12 months MAX. Never had an issues. Earlier model n47s used crappy Mitsubishi turbos which always failed early, 08/58 these changed to Garret turbo which where much stronger but again regular services keep the turbo healthy
interesting. mines an 07 so presumably the mitsi turbo? can this be swapped for a garret one? or is it just not that simple?
peter mackay chances are it’s already been changed at some point or rebuild by now, if it hasn’t and still running fine then I wouldn’t worry. If it does go it would be a straight switch, or a good turbo place can rebuild with upgraded bearings which are much cheaper

@@richbillany2795 that does sound horrible. Lucky you were able to proof it! I hear both good and bad things about the 116, more good than bad though. A problem that always comes up is chain tensioner failure. I suppose that was also what you're describing.

Not just the 120d. Its all both petrol and diesel between I believe 2007-2012. Dont have the issue with the floormats and ive got official mats still. RPM is RPM, gear ratios can be changed on a map but I dont see how this is an issue, if youre cruising you should be in a high gear.
Gear ratios can’t be changed by getting it mapped mate, only by changing the diff.
Matt, put your VIN number into BMW recall information, you might get it sorted for free, many have!
My 116i sport has the close ratio box,it’s great 👍
Camchain failure is down to poor maintenance and incorrect oil. The Camchain guide is plastic and breaks up. The later 2012 upwards is way better.

All e87 120ds have a slight “chuffing noise” this is due to something to do with the diesel injection or something if you research it a little more. Not always the timing chain.

Wanna get the 2.0tfsi but again this engine is also troubles😭😭😭
In my eyes the a3 8p sportback before face-lift in the right "black' colour still looks amazing even today...

The drivers side mat should have felcro discs on it this stops it sliding forward and preventing the annoying issue with the clutch pedal catching
Good video. Great location too looked nice👍
i had two bmw 116i sport on my 2nd the cam chain snapped and went into my oil sump cost £1500 to fix at bmw and that was with a good will gesture due to all the complaints
bought an e87 120d used in 2015, fast forward to 2019 I've changed distribution chain, turbine, and removed dpf... now it's perfectly fine but I spent 4.500euro. If I just knew this before...
Yikes :/ you still have it? How much did you pay for the chain?
@@rafaeljimenez197 specifically for the chain I don't remember sorry... If you search for catalogue online you can find it but it's not a big deal... Turbine is very expansive yes, but the distribution is fucked, it's behind the engine... So much work, this is why costs a lot, you must take out the entire engine... Otherwise the distribution kit it's not pricey.
BTW I still have and except for minor broken stupid stuff, the car and the engine are perfectly fine :)
@@shakymc i think i am gonna pass ): tremendous looking car but that turbine and maintenance stuff puts me off big time ): i currently have a 14' fiat 500c and it just needs brakes and springs. Thought of getting a manual one or one of those bimmers (2007)
@@rafaeljimenez197 from 2015 it seems they fixed the problem on the new model... But the old models, yeah, not worth it today
