You will get that amazing color if you keep them outside, they need sunlight to make vitamin A and D. Lack of light also triggers the production of melatonin that limits their growth. I've notice this keeping them inside and outside. keeping them inside reduces color, size and longevity. They also need that hibernation period in the winter, as a break form the warm breeding season and it extends their lifespan. keep up the great work, I really enjoy the videos.
It is wild how much they are light dependent. I will breed them inside for a while then we will take them outside and see what happens but I’m doubting they will color up like the pics. My natural tanks are good for popping colors.
It's like they get a sun tan for sure. I put mine outside and they go from pale yellow to red and white. Then they come inside for winter and go back to pale yellow
was interested in ordering these from Japan when i saw the listings.... decided it wasn't worth the risk. I'll be a couple generations behind but will buy from USA breeders like you who bit the bullet ordering sight unseen overseas!
I would try medaka lair for the next try. They're a stateside medaka breeder the strains are true to form and match what the description is. He sells eggs too. Im about ro purchase from him soon myself.
Ricefish are so beautiful. I will get some for my tank I set up in October inspired by you. No filter, no heater, just light, sand (aquasoil under), and a bunch of plants, wood, and rocks. The snails and microfauna are loving it, and plants are growing wild already.
You need to get yourself some rice bowls or coloured plastic tubs for display and grading. Transparent tubs don't display the colour so well. Black, brown, red and white are the ones i use.
Ricefish hot new Killie in town. These gonna start getting SUPER popular in U.S. this season. I'm gonna start with the midnight, black, which are readily available and work on the lineage. Killifish Krazed, now MEDAKA HEAD!
You should have left them in the sun for 10 minutes or so to get them to fire up properly! And pretty sure tri color needs to breed with a bycolor to make a tri color again and the two gekkas u put to the side will probably be the best in my opinion!
It true though, I keep them in a aquarium with light 24/7 and they just slowly develop spin curve and die, the moment I put them outside in my haft green water mini pond they just start breeding like crazy and no longer have any issue
2:30 What is the background sound? Grasshoppers or dragonflies? Keep an eye on the ponds for damselfly/dragonfly larva and use a flashlight at night to see them (at least that works for me).
my experience ordering eggs from Japan was disappointing they arrived fine but as they grew it was clear they had extremely poor genetics and one of the strains only a single individual presented the advertised variety. not to mention few survived being kept outside while my other varieties thrived. its gonna take generations of breeding in good genetics to get the lines presentable.
Medaka are like a gotcha game. Out of 100 eggs you might get 2 that look like the parent. That’s why the ones that do look like the lineage are so exspesive.

From what I've heard is that the professional breeders do not sell eggs online. So many of these fancy expensive strains generally do not breed true. A few might work. You have to do the work of culling for that reason. My basic Miyuki's out of my second batch have a few with frilled fins and a couple look kind of pinkish to me. They are possibly mediocre or not a very pure strain. But again I hear variety can crop up. Anyone can go on to improve or develop a new strain. Best to have a direct connection to Japan or have a good importer of livestock. Check other countries too. In the USA we are just getting started. Medaka are one of the 3 most studied laboratory fish along with Plates and Zebra Danios. On lab sites I've found their books are very expensive, not for the layman. These fish do not have stomachs! For that reason it is best to not feed 2 hours before sundown. I feed mine when ever I can anyway cause I work all day. There are summer, winter and baby foods for the more intricate fancier. Good luck everyone.
What was the maturity age of the fish as that might change the color? Also, I notice a major change in the colors of the fish I keep outside in natural sunlight especially the black coloration.
They are definitely mature enough. I will breed them inside for a while then we will take them outside and see what happens but I’m doubting they will color up like the pics. My natural tanks are good for popping colors.
Im pretty sure I bought ricefish from the same person or at least a similar ebay shop, can confirm they grow ugly and sometimes stunted until they get some time outside, mine were supposed to turn gold and stayed blue until they were moved out

Thanks for this. I'm British but live in Singapore where I keep medaka on my balcony. I bought several more expensive strains here but they didn't breed...
Sounds like it’s happening probably ends at the month but you never know. They seem to have them quarterly anymore. Which is better than once or twice a year.

@LRBaquatics what are the other types you get? I got some Ryuushoushoushi from him. I got some Kouhakurame from another Japanese supplier. Both hatched well, and we will see soon enough if they match their description, lol!
The person you bought these from are importing eggs illegally to the US and has been called out on a few of the medaka groups. Ricefish change their color dramatically depending on the color of the container you keep them in. Dark tubs produce darker colors and vice versa.

Buyer beware is correct. What you don't know and should communicate with your viewers is purchasing eggs from sellers on eBay or anywhere else that come from over seas requires importation paperwork and licenses. If you buy these eggs and have them shipped to you through the mail without having these things and without filing the shipment through Fish and game you are actually illegally importing. Buying from the sellers is forcing the buyer to illegally important. Flat out. I personally know people who are being fined for these purchases. Especially from the seller that you show here in your video. Us Fish and wildlife are fining people as much as $300 per egg. That seller in general does not use his own pictures on his sales postings so I'm not surprised they don't look correct. In Japan in general the sales of eggs is looked down on and any breeder with respect for the fish will not sell them. There is no way they can control the quality. Quality is everything when it comes to Medaka. I also personally know that that seller is known in Japan and will not be served by many of the top breeders. I do not know where he gets the eggs he sells but they do not come from fish that he owns.
