That was when Vegas was Vegas, not Disney land. I was lucky enough to see it all in 1978. Saw Martin, Sammy, Sinatra all on the billboard. Rickles was there, alot of old names. It was a place for adults to try their luck. No fooling around. I saw people lose tons of real money on one black Jack hand. Will always remember the old town.

Mesmerizing scene. Frank, Dean, Sammy and the boys. Sammy's facial expressions are naturally cool. Imagine sitting at a nightclub, having a cocktail and listening to them sing. Wow

Thank you posting this . This makes the whole song for Sammy. Monumental. Look close at the pack. When it came to the show down, to JFK's inauguration, Sammy wasn't invited to the inner sanctum parties because he married a white woman (Mae Britt). The stand-up guy who told Kennedy to take his inauguration and shove it was not the ass-kissing Sinatra, but Dino. Look at him close ladies and gentleman in this movie. He was world's greatest humanitarian who cow-towed to no one when Sinatra did, in support of his friend Sammy Davis Jr. He died an underrated broken man when his handsome son died in a US Airforce Jet crash somewhere in , I think, California. All the life went out of him. He was giant off the screen as well as on.

The whole Rat Pack thing was an elaborate lie; a marketing concept dreamt up by the Mob to promote their Las Vegas interests and exploited by Senator Joe Kennedy to give his son John some reflected youthful cool to launch him into the white house. The Mob were keen to get JFK elected in the mistaken belief he would halt enquiries into organised crime. Their portrayal as inseparable friends was pure fiction and the drinking and partying was PR fabrication. They were all middle-aged family men with kids.

So has anyone notice how Sammy Davis Jr. stops short at the very end. The ? is why. Perhaps the director was leaving it open for a sequel. No not another robbery but perhaps a continuation of the so called "incinerated money." Let's suppose you were the funeral director's assistant and you found the money band next to the coffin. Of course you would check out the coffins content. And remembering Saul's interest in the deceased you'd need a way to throw him and any others off. So you would plant the idea of a cremation idea into the Funeral Director's head and no one would be the wiser after assuming the money was burnt... except for Josh Howard of course.

That was intentional. The Rat Pack was actually performing at the Sands while they were filming the movie, and part of their contract was to have a block of time during the night to perform, then go straight to the set to film. They were merely showing their movie was set in the real world, where their characters would have been able to see the Rat Pack...and probably think, "Hey, those guys look just like us!"

Thanks for posting the film's ending. Lewis Milestone was a great director, and while he likely directed this overly hip action-comedy as a bit of a lark, its somber and almost tragic ending is actually quite moving, and I'm sure Milestone insisted on it.
I saw the movie in 1960 when I was "eleven" and it left a mark. Sure, the banter's formulaic and the sexist 1960's attitudes are all there, but hey, it's the original Rat Pack in all its long-gone glory, and far better the the Clooney version.

Nicky Blair is seated at the end of the row at the funeral and he's the one who tells them Conte is being cremated. Nicky was a pal of the Rat Pack, came out to Hollywood in the late 1940's with Tony Curtis when they were both starving actors just starting out. He loved to cook pasta for all of them and when his acting career had pretty much run it's course, he opened a restaurant in L.A called Nicky Blair's in the early 1970's. I met Nicky a few times, a very sweet guy. He passed away in 1998.

How come they all look so sad and disappointed, like they just saw all of their money burn up in flames in a casket or something. heh.

@TheIronhide34 They put the money in the coffin, the coffin got cremated instead of buried. They planned to dig it up when it was back home, but it got burned in Vegas instead.

it'll be a good twist if the widow knew about the money inside the coffin, and took it out of there before cremation. she gets to keep the loot and the gang is hunted by the mob that wants to recover the stolen money. in the novelization, the mob hunted and killed all the gang members, saving Danny and Sam for last.

@@teslahertz4916 Thanks. The rendition is very different though. I wonder if there is a full version in existence.

Major plot hole. The body would not have been cremated directly after the service. It would have been transferred to a cardboard box and upon opening the casket the funeral director would have become a very rich man.

They never should have torn The Sands down, though what it became by the 1980's was an eyesore and unrecognizable from the building seen here.. Or they should have rebuilt the original building (without the 1966 tower) from the original blueprints in the desert 10 miles outside of town as a shrine to an era we will never see again. I was in The Sands in 1967 when it pretty much looked like this. They paged people in the casino on a house intercom.."Jack Entratter, pick up the white phone."

@spk9grsch Because ppl would think if he was at front he would be arrogant - so the director made up for this position by giving him more camera time.
