THANK YOU !!!! Years of frustration cured with that one silly washer. I can't find a repair guy in my town so I depend on you to learn :) A note for viewers - For the life of me I could not get the screw wheel back on without knocking the washer out of place. So I tipped my machine up vertical so the washer could "lie down" while I fumbled with the big nut.

Thanks! Changed the belt in a Brother VX-940, could not get clutch to work right. The disc popped off so I couldn't see how it was fitted. Found it can fit 4 ways, but there is only 1 right way! Your video is easier to understand that others. I don't want to get rid of hardy old mechanicals, especially when they were made of all-metal inside. Keep going!

Thank you so much! I fixed my vintage
Podolsk handturned machine after watching your video - turns out somebody installed the horned
washer the wrong way. I would never have noticed that this minor detail is the problem - it caused my machine to stop sewing but the handle to rotate freely. Your
    video explanation saved me!

Very clearly explained and illustrated video. I was having trouble where my Janome clutch won't stay engaged at medium to high speed. I followed these instructions and my machine works like a "finely tuned machine" !!!

I had the same problem. Turns out the washer was 180° out. I had a bad motor on the machine, but apparently someone else had been into it and flipped that part 180°. When they decided that they couldn't do anything with the motor, they just threw it back together. The brushes on the motor were worn out, so I replaced those and got it running again, but it still wouldn't catch. I flipped that washer and now the machine engages and disengages just like it's supposed to. Works just like a new machine.

That inner ring rotation is so important. It's position for usually proves when I have a 50/50 chance 80% of the time I'm wrong. The Necchi Supernova is one of the few machines you can't go wrong.

Hi Sewing machine repair guy. Thanks for your upload. I had a jammed up handwheel that needed lots of cleaning to move freely. I was able to successfully clean out the area between the handwheel and the needle bar mechanism so that it freely moved when the clutch was disengaged. Before this, everything was stuck together, so I couldn't disengage the clutch and everything moved while winding the bobbin. Now that this problem has been solved, I have another issue that I must have inadvertently created. Now the clutch knob slips when the machine is running. I have checked to make sure the stop motion ring is in the correct 180 degree orientation with the inner tabs facing outward. I am able to crank the clutch knob about a 1/6 rotation until it feels pretty tight. However, when i start the motor and the machine gets up to full speed, the clutch knob comes loose and instantly clicks over to the disengaged position, thus not allowing the motor to transfer the power to the needle bar. It almost seems as if putting some locktite in the threads of the clutch knob, it may correct the problem, almost like it needs something extra sticky, but since I have cleaned everything, everything slides too easily and that knob keeps coming loose when I accelerate the machine to full speed. I know this is the opposite problem most people have, but have you had this happen and do you know a way around it? Even if I crank the knob really hard with my hand, the speed of the machine loosens it after only a few seconds of running and will not stay engaged. Thanks for reading through my issue.

@@michaeltexeira6185 Hi Michael, thanks for the reply. I've actually since figured out what the problem is. So I bought my Singer 201 on eBay that was sold as refurbished. I knew that it probably wasn't 100% restored to perfect condition, but knew at least some things had been serviced that would make it easier for me to just hop right into. Anyways, after un-sticking the handwheel from the drive shaft, I realized that it spun in an anti-torque direction and loosened very easily. After some very careful looking around, I discovered that not only was the stop-motion ring not the correct one for my machine, but the locking knob in the center of the handwheel wasn't correct either. So when I went to tighten that knob, it wouldn't grip the actual stop motion ring because the back center of the knob wasn't the right shape, so instead it tightened up against the handwheel itself, thus providing no actual locking to the wheel. My explanation may be hard to understand without seeing the actual problem, but all in all, the lesson I learned was that when machines are sold on eBay as refurbished, or even if they're just sold as a general used machine, it should never be assumed that every previous owner knew exactly what they were doing when they were switching out parts on it.

Hi 👋 I have a model 1217 Sears kenmore. The clutch, it will not engage. I put a new washer on. Also is the clutch knob supposed to turn towards me or away from me when sewing? Bc now it won’t even see 😅

If the tabs face away from the machine, why are there notches in the handwheel that perfectly line up with those tabs? This is for my Thompson portable walking foot. I have the washer the other way, tabs facing machine and in the notches on handwheel, seems to work fine.

My machine had thread from bobbin winding all tangled and wound up on the gears of the handwheel clutch. The coil around the clutch seems to be dislodged/dislocated as it's partly sitting outside of the clutch. Please help on how I can fix the coil. Thank you.

Tried different things but even my rubber band when I turn it manually doesn’t make the needle or the arm go. It’s locked up. What can I do for this. I cleaned and oiled the clutch and the needle area but no movement at all.

I wonder if you can help me. I have 2 White (about 50 years old but in great shape) and they both have the same problem. When I disengage the clutch to make bobbins, the needle keeps going up and down. I did the procedure in the video, flip the inside ring 180 degrees, and it still goes up and down. I loosen the screw a bit but again it did not change. These machines were working perfectly until they came back from their tune-up. Also I have problems with the bobbin winders - they dont turn unless I put my thumb on the push button. I am using these machines for more than 30 years now and it is the first time they do not work as usual and strangely it is all about the bobbin winder.

Hi Guy, can you think of any other reason why a motor wouldn't disengage? I've tried the washer in both positions and micro-adjusted so that the set screw has maximum rotation... still the clutch doesn't engage enough to disengage the motor from the needle. (on vintage White with exactly the same hand wheel as yours)

i just noticed that i can hold the needle up when I have the nut loose but if i let go of the needle it will move... [scratching head]

What if the clutch will not come off at all. Screw removed and it won’t budge. Machine works like a champ however since the clutch won’t disengage I can’t use the bobbin filler.

Use a magnet to help find the screw. Or vacuum with something over the nozzle to catch the screw.😊
