This entire Album is Brilliant. A harrowing song cycle chronicling the death throes of a relationship. If you've only listened to this song, you missing the rest of the story.
How this band did not become a long term major band is beyond me. Very talented line-up. Just goes to show some times it's better to be lucky than good.
Because their from my home town, Cincinnati and we can't do anything right or get noticed for the large amount of talent here for some reason. Always treated like a second rate town even though we have professional sports teams on a nation level, one of which won a championship in 1990 and the other has never won and lost to the same team both times they made it to the super bowl....
This song still makes it for me, over 20 years later and it's still as fresh today as when I first heard it. Especially the power in some of the verses that stand out: "I stayed in too long But she was the perfect fit And we dragged it out so long this time Started to make each other sick" and "Let me in I'm cold All messed up but nowhere to go You got indecision, and indecision is my enemy Well, unlock the cabinet, hey I'll take whatever you got, got, got Now I'm on it, now I'm on it And you're done" Wow! Fuckin' brilliant.
For me it captures that feeling of aimlessness of 20-something relationships that was very prevalent in Gen Xers who didn't know what the fuck we were doing. Add in drugs to the mix, and it's a recipe for despair and chaos.
The single most underrated band of the 1990's. Greg Dulli's stage act was phenomenal.(I saw them in 1993 at the Roxy in LA)...they blew me away.Funk alternative with true class.
I love the way they changed out the singer for other dudes of different ages and races in parts. That's a very interesting idea I've never seen implemented that well.
i discovered this band when i was in highschool in 2005 and never stopped listening. I thought i was late to the party back then i cant even begin to understand how kids feel when they discover this music today
Amazing how this song crept into my mind after not having listened to this album in about 20 years. It still holds up incredibly well. Gotta dig up this CD. From start to finish its a great listen.
One of the most underrated bands of grunge era music besides screaming trees and both are awesome oh and when Greg isn't doing afghan whigs he moonlights as page Hamilton of helmet 😂😂😂😂 and available for childrens birthday partys
I've recently found Greg Dulli's work. I'm happy that I did. It's amazing how everytime time that today's music dissapoints me, I take a look at older stuff and get smacked in the face with awesomeness like this. The '90's surely rocked! :D Wish I was born 10 years earlier.
Gentleman is a fantastic album highly recommend their album Black Love quite a different feel to to it bus still fantastic. Also if you like Greg Dulli the lead singer he had band after Afghan Whigs called The Twilight Singers which was quite good as well.
I heard of them along time ago, but never really listened. 120 minutes threw them right in my face a few nights ago. Late bloomer, but, wow. Blew me away.
I found this band to be the "thinking man"s alternative. Just like Tool is the thinking man's metal. Book T is the thinking man's funk, etc. This whole album speaks so strongly to what it is to be a man in our society and all of the conflicts that go with it. I absolutely LOVE this band and this was my first album of theirs I picked up. So much respect for them and for the material! This album STILL holds up.
Lyrics: Your attention, please Now turn off the light Your infection, please I haven't got all night Understand, do you understand? Understand, I'm a gentleman I'm a gentleman I stayed in too long But she was the perfect fit And we dragged it out so long this time Started to make each other sick But now I've got time for you For you, you, you and me to Well, come and get it, come and get it Cause I'm done Understand, do you understand? Understand, I'm a gentleman I waited for the joke, it never did arrive And words I thought I'd smoke Let me in I'm cold All messed up but nowhere to go You got indecision, and indecision is my enemy Unlock the cabinet, hey hey hey I'll take whatever you got, got, got Now I'm on it, now I'm on it And you're done I waited for the joke It never did arrive And words I thought I'd choke I hardly recognize
Always remembered the "morphing" for lack of a better term to a black man and then an old man. The old man absolutely nails his singing parts and his expressions are priceless.
I remember we took a family trip to Pensacola for a skate meet my sister competed in and I'd just picked this album up - on tape - and walking through the hotel lobby and seeing the OJ Simpson white Bronco car chase playing on every tv in the place... Quite some memory right there.
Dayton, Ohio. Hara Arena. The Breeders and Afghan Whigs. The only thing missing was Guided By Voices. For a far too brief moment in time, SW Ohio was the real deal in alternative music. Long live WOXY 97.7 as well.
Hey, Nik Fowler. In answer to your question. The band formed just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. In the little college town of Oxford. The school is Miami U. of Ohio. I'm not positive Greg was attending there, but that's kinda the origin. Greg's had success in other area's, but the "Wigs" are his passion. If you listen to all their stuff, you can always find "that one song" that just knocks you back ! For me, the album "Black Love" is just perfect, start to finish. The song "Faded" is the killer though. When I hear it, I'm flooded with a million thoughts and emotions. I wish they would tour through this area. Maybe someday. "Wigs Rock" ! ! !
So I mentioned in a work meeting that I’d gone to a show for the first time in forever, “a band called The Afghan Whigs,” and a coworker asked if they’d done anything she might recognize. So I was going to send her a YT link to one of their old videos, and realized that sending any one of these videos to a coworker would, at minimum, get me a tense meeting with HR. 🤣
Fucking hell, this came out more than a year before I was born and I'm discovering it now?! What the actual fuck? I mean, I was basically raised on grunge-y alternative stuff (and post-punk/goth rock, but let's not get sidetracked xD), so it makes me super sad to think that I missed moping to this in highschool
This band was awesome, what happened to them. The songs were freaking brutal, they would wake you up.... I got their CD one it first came out.... Good shait mate.
Yeah sure. That is why all the critics rated it with 4 out 5 stars or 9/10 ratings by Rolling Stone, NME , Q etc mentioned in the book 1001 albums you must hear before you die, in top 30 'grunge' albums etc. Sales were under par , yes.
what does this song make you nostalgic for? subscribe for more: uproxx.it/mrln2hd
The Buzz coffee house in Cincinnati. Alas, no longer there, but nostalgic just the same.
being little again
Working at the Tower Records store in NY.
Making playlists for my ex girlfriend who was a stripper. And the douchebags in the club looking around as if to say "What the fuck?"
White America.
One of the most underrated alternative bands...this song will never get old
so true
true
Amazing tune
Yeah these guys took off when Kurt was dead and Mudhoney sucked
Its a shame that they didnt become more famous. They deserved far more recognition. Super talented group

Twilight Singers was another band that was great
I've always felt Greg Dulli's voice and style are an acquired taste. I certainly love his singing, but it's just not for everyone.
Because their from my home town, Cincinnati and we can't do anything right or get noticed for the large amount of talent here for some reason. Always treated like a second rate town even though we have professional sports teams on a nation level, one of which won a championship in 1990 and the other has never won and lost to the same team both times they made it to the super bowl....
they did ..huge band
"I waited for the joke, it never did arrive..."
Yeah.
That's a gut punch put to perfect words.
those lyrics never left me. why I'm here, lol
Dont ask me why, but this video have strong David Lynch vibes. I love it.
Phil Harder directed the hell outta this video. Combines voyeurism with pure angst.
What a song,what a band..long live 90's
This song still makes it for me, over 20 years later and it's still as fresh today as when I first heard it. Especially the power in some of the verses that stand out:

This one and "Debonair" just... wow!
Gentleman album is a Timless masterpiece..... from the cover to all the songs......still love it after all these years, my kids love it too!.
The single most underrated band of the 1990's.

Best break up album of all time.
I lived every second of it.
I'm late to their party, but I'm so glad I came.
I know. I had Debonair for years before I realized how deep it really was. And that "quiet-screaming" is good vocals.
@@rjonboy7608 You are so correct!
27 years today this album changed my life. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
What a song..savage & video matches it perfectly
This whole album is a how-to guide of exactly what steps to take to ruin a relationship. Pure brilliance.
It's a tried and true process!
And as such, it served as somewhat of a guidebook for my relationships in college!
Great comment!. Very true
eh. I manage doi gthst quite well on my own, sir :)
i discovered this band when i was in highschool in 2005 and never stopped listening. I thought i was late to the party back then i cant even begin to understand how kids feel when they discover this music today
I saw them 95 and 2016, Can you believe they even got better??? No more underrated band
Back in the day they were to become the next stones. What heppened next was a joke! Glad they came back. In spades was good
I discovered them recently. Awesome band, can't believe how unknown they are
Man what a clip. Awesome.
I Love These Guys!!!! One of the MOST underrated Bands EVER!!!! Way ahead of their time!!!
How can something be SO good?!?!
Brilliant.
Amazing how this song crept into my mind after not having listened to this album in about 20 years. It still holds up incredibly well. Gotta dig up this CD. From start to finish its a great listen.
I listened to this album so much I think I wore out the shine on the CD. Takes me back...
One of the most underrated bands of grunge era music besides screaming trees and both are awesome oh and when Greg isn't doing afghan whigs he moonlights as page Hamilton of helmet 😂😂😂😂 and available for childrens birthday partys
Only Whigs weren’t grunge any more than the Stones were grunge.
Utter genius. Floored by this album when I first heard it two years ago and it hasn't let go of me since. Best CD I've ever heard.
can't get enough of this piece
I've recently found Greg Dulli's work. I'm happy that I did. It's amazing how everytime time that today's music dissapoints me, I take a look at older stuff and get smacked in the face with awesomeness like this. The '90's surely rocked! :D Wish I was born 10 years earlier.
Today's music has only gotten worse since you wrote your comment.
I just heard this album last night thanks to a friend. Mind was officially blown. 😍
Gentleman is a fantastic album highly recommend their album Black Love quite a different feel to to it bus still fantastic. Also if you like Greg Dulli the lead singer he had band after Afghan Whigs called The Twilight Singers which was quite good as well.
So happy for you, This band has an incredible discography! I am so happy they are still at it today :)
every time i hear this song it sounds more amazing than the last.
Love this song. The Afghan Whigs from Cincinnati, Ohio! A big hit for a hometown band, with heavy rotation on MTV.
+KPEC3arrival those were the good old days man mtv use to play videos
Late to the post but... 97x... Bam The future of rock and roll.
Greg 's from Hamilton ohio pretty sure he went to Ross high School
@@toddsparks5413 Hamilton? There is a really big high school up there, I went to camp with their marching band. Their band is massive. Or was.
Everything Greg does is a masterpiece!
I love this band!
Great music from the 90's....
This song never gets old...RIP David Rosser
I heard of them along time ago, but never really listened. 120 minutes threw them right in my face a few nights ago. Late bloomer, but, wow. Blew me away.
One of the best 90´s singles and videos! Awesome!
One of my all-time favorite videos and song. This was my song in the 90's when I was in the Army. So many ladies.
I found this band to be the "thinking man"s alternative. Just like Tool is the thinking man's metal. This album is a fucking masterpiece.
In the US whatever crap showed in MTV and be a high school crap is an underrated masterpiece… long live to social media and nostalgic assholes
This song is exciting like the opening of a great movie, pumps you up for something else to come...
24 years and I still remember every line
This is a great rock 'n roll song

Yep. That was the one moment in life I was cool.lol
Lyrics:
Your attention, please
Now turn off the light
Your infection, please
I haven't got all night
Understand, do you understand?
Understand, I'm a gentleman
I'm a gentleman
I stayed in too long
But she was the perfect fit
And we dragged it out so long this time
Started to make each other sick
But now I've got time for you
For you, you, you and me to
Well, come and get it, come and get it
Cause I'm done
Understand, do you understand?
Understand, I'm a gentleman
I waited for the joke, it never did arrive
And words I thought I'd smoke
Let me in I'm cold
All messed up but nowhere to go
You got indecision, and indecision is my enemy
Unlock the cabinet, hey hey hey
I'll take whatever you got, got, got
Now I'm on it, now I'm on it

I waited for the joke
It never did arrive
And words I thought I'd choke
I hardly recognize
Best album ever

What a fucking masterpiece of a song.

Quite some memory right there.
The bomb also in 2022
that never gets old.... F'n A
love music videos from the 90s
Great song by an amazing band!
30 years later and this song is still terrifying.
This is the most 90s song.
This video rules. I have loved the song for 30 years, but seeing this I begin again my lov3e.
Top 10 songwriters and albums of my life.
Same 🖤
This belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of '90s videos....
Been a fan since I saw them live when I was 16 and have never actually seen this video before, and, well, Mr Dulli...
Stumbled on this song from " USA Up All Night" And So happy since then. Also look up Martin Bisi " Bava". Be surprised.
unbelievable tune!!!
Cincinnati baby! Saw them in '93 at Bogart's. Excellent show
It never will get much better and greater than this...
That black dude is the true star of this video.
I like the old dude
Along with Blackie Onassis of Urge Overkill,....possibly the most underrated 90s drummer ever.
Blackie is very underrated. I never him referenced.
Greg was so hot 🔥
I stayed too long but she was the perfect fit = greatest lyric ever.
These guys, they dressed well. Great band.
Always loved this song.
this song is so fucking awesome ,,,,uuuuuuggggghh hurts so good to listen
the afghan whigs ladies and Gentlemen
Dayton, Ohio. Hara Arena. The Breeders and Afghan Whigs. The only thing missing was Guided By Voices. For a far too brief moment in time, SW Ohio was the real deal in alternative music. Long live WOXY 97.7 as well.
True FACTS!!! From Cleveland's own NIN, The Pretenders and Chrissy Hind! Ohio definitely had it's foothold on the Alt Scene for a long time!!
91X and Steve West brought me Social D in 1990. Forever grateful...let's say Grateful Dead!

Reds and bangles sucks but yea I hard there from there
Went to High school in Oxford and Miami U.
Sadly 97x ain't around anymore.
I'm just hearing this March '24....digging it!
Man, that is a very 90's video.
That’s what makes it cool.
Much better than a 2000s video of waving money, and riding jet skis eh? lol
These guys were REAL!!
Fucking hell, this came out more than a year before I was born and I'm discovering it now?! What the actual fuck? When MTV stilled played videos. One of favorite songs of this era.
this album defined my teenager days
Wow! I forgot how this songs kicks butt!!
This band was awesome, what happened to them. The songs were freaking brutal, they would wake you up.... I got their CD one it first came out.... Good shait mate.
Great tune....forgot about these guys
and the award for Best 4th Wall Break!
Listen to Greg's vocals- it's more true, and relevant today (2024) than ever.
Right up there with "Buffalo Tom",in the bleeding angst stakes.
I'd throw in early Everclear as well...
@@kitoyobeni1 World of Noise, and Sparkle & Fade for sure.

I would love if Greg Dulli came to Austin Texas, Boo. We need you here!
Greg Dulli looks like a hero and a villain
greg was a handsome bastard back in those days, huh?
Along with Gavin friday and the singer from Therapy?
absolutely perfect album to put on while you curl up and hate yourself
I cannot remember the Baltimore Orioles' player, but this was his intro song walking up the plate to bat. It was awesome!!!!!
No idea who?
Afghan Whigs, Dramarama and Sunny Day Real Estate......all amazing bands but heavily underated.....45243
Sunny Day Real Estate 🤙👌
I first heard sunny day on this obscure compilation and then became obsessed. I think they were the pathway to emo
I think you mean Bananarama
Remember MTVs ;;Big 80's '' Show back in the 90's anybody?
I was searching for this song for the longest time!
I miss grungy '90th!
Who knew discovering this album at 13 would be the biography of my love life for the next 30 years! LOL
ikr?
So Great.
love the part at 0:47 where he fogs up the window ;)
