Shawn, my cat Cali, after watching her brother play fetch for 5 months decided she wanted in on it too, so now she has me throw her favorite toy, which is a ball with a bell in it. Her brother is so persistent in playing with his stuffed mouse, but Cali is just occasionally preoccupied with it. Having interactive pets is fun. Growing up, we had dogs, but they wouldn't bring their toys back. Callie seems like she's a lot of fun.

I learned about rotten birches! On my way out to my tree stand one morning this year I barely touched one while slogging thru marshy ground and all 30 feet of the thing fell straight down like a slack of dominos, all of it missing me luckily. Every piece was like a damp sponge held together by the bark.

You can also hover your mouse pointer over a comment and three dots will appear on the right - these give access to several functions, one being Report, allowing you to let YT know there's an issue with that comment. Greetings Shawn. I have lots of such Birch on my property, many have grown tall and thin because they have grown in unmanaged forest (Douglas Fir, Spruce, Aspen, Vine Maple and Balsam Fir) In the last couple of years they have suffered with the drought conditions and been under attack from a boring beetle, The tops die off and very soon snap off and water gets into them after which they soon decline. Splitting large rounds can be tough as the Birch Bark created a tough girdle that holds the wood together resisting the splitting forces. When I fall Birch I split the bark down one side with my chainsaw or an axe and this makes it easier to split and also speeds up seasoning of wood. As you know the fallen Birch rot from inside quickly. Thanks for your commitment to make such interesting and informative videos.

Hi Shawn, I hope Cali has many more years to go. My chocolate Lab died two years ago, she was 17 years, 3 month old and I still miss her terribly, she was cremated and put into a teak box which I have in the living room, she was my entire life. I've been agonizing over getting a new family member and I think I've finally decided to bring a puppy home next summer, I'm torn between a chocolate Lab or a golden retriever, it's a tough decision. Anyway, sorry to bore you, I enjoyed the relaxing video, Cali has many more years to go, the ceiling looks great, thanks for the escape, take care Shawn.

It sits in front of a running creek and there is a wide open field on the opposite side of the creek surrounded by 89 wooded acres. I love it there. It is on the grid but I enjoy being there as often as possible. If I could live there full time, I would. :)

HI SHAWN, you don't have to lose your paper (white) birch trees. They may have an average mortality, but yours can live much longer if their few needs are met (water, oxygen, and organic matter availability, root expansion and sunlight). Here are their top killers and what you can do to turn it around.
    (1) Soil compaction (foot and vehicle traffic around base) ~ don't drive within 10 feet of trees and apply 3 inches deep of large wood chip mulch around tree (1 foot from base of tree to 8 - 10 feet out). Many specimen trees are killed by tourists.
    (2) Drought ~ mulch will help. Also, irrigate 1 inch of water once a week over mulch beds during extended droughts. Invest in an inexpensive rain gauge.
    (3) Peeling bark off trees ~ do not "pull" bark off living trees. If you need tinder, "cut" loose bark off living trees without peeling. A better source of tinder is plucking within reach the small dead branches in the inner crown of spruce trees
    (4) Bronze birch borer ~ look for bleeding and frass (beetle sawdust excrement), and galleries (tunnels) under the bark of dead trees ~ treat when leaves first appear in spring using a soil drench (pour over base and soil) using Imidacloprid (Merit pesticide in your hardware store). The higher active ingredient the better.
    (5) Ground fires within 10 feet of trees will kill roots and crowns
    (6) Changing natural watering patterns by nearby structures that intercept and disperse rain, adding soil and soil compaction ~ irrigate

Birches are super dangerous. The woodpeckers start punching holes in patterns and the branches randomly come down. Had about three occasions where large branches missed us by inches. I have some trees that are completely rotted still standing. Wife calls them "ferry homes". Mystical. Old rotting birch is good for smoke wood to stop mosquitoes. It turns to almost a sponge toffee and will burn like incense. Good stuff.

I saw a video in which a man used a radiator mounted behind the firebox to transfer excess heat to narrow pipes that he used for some other purpose. I can’t recall what that was, but you could get another radiator that would transfer the heat to containers for hot water for dishes and/or a shower. Another branch could go to a rack to dry wet clothing, gloves, and boots in the breezeway. You could even install underfloor heat in the bedroom.
You could use a line for de-icing the porch or stairs, or any problem areas you discover over time.
A pressure relief would be required, of course.

I love watching you on your journey. Not a criticism at all but agree that the last few videos have been dark and again this isn’t criticism, but something to be mindful of is projecting your voice more when your some distance away from the camera. But that maybe because of the environment of not having the electricity to light up the inside of the cabin or it was early morning or evening when your shooting. I did have trouble hearing you in the last few videos as well. Your voice does not carry well. (If you know what I mean). When your explaining something on what your doing or like this video when you were sharing your wisdom on birch trees, I don’t want to miss out on any of that. ❤ Thank you! Gotta agree with the consensus in this case... I'm unimpressed by the new camera.
All details within shadow are lost (to me anyway) - even viewing on a monstrous HD television.
Love every second of content, just wish I could see it better.

Shawn, does your new cam have a problem? This vid in particular is a bit underexposed.

    Dear Shawn James.
👍👌👏 2) Can't you sell the birch bark as a natural fire starter? You have lots of it. Or making birch tar out of it?
Best regards, luck and health to all of you (including great Cali 💚 of course).
