While a bit on the simplistic side, I **love** this movie. They had the very 50’s aesthetics in the bodices & makeup/ hairstyling, **but** they also did a lot of things that many historical dramas don’t bother much with these days; men in breeches & hose instead of trousers, men wearing shoes, rather than boots indoors - headwear (maybe not as frequent as would be accurate, but certainly more than many a modern production)- & Diane was in a dress for that fencing scene, when they could have taken the easy way out, & put her in pants. I think in some ways it’s a fairly accurate portrayal - Catherine didn’t have a lot of power while her husband was alive- Diane was considered an ‘uncrowned queen’- someone that even the Pope of the time could not ignore - & her relationship with Henri caused Catherine a great deal of jealousy, but she also had cause to be grateful to her, because Diane not only approved of the marriage due to Catherine’s heritage**- & encouraged Henri to fulfil his marital obligations to her, ensuring the rumoured repudiation that was being bandied about- due to concerns over infertility- never happened, but she also nursed Catherine back to health when she fell ill. **One thing never mentioned, is that Catherine & Diane were actually distantly related (their grandmothers were sisters)- Catherine’s mother was French; Madeleine de la Tours d’Auvergne - & Diane was present at her marriage to Lorenzo II.
I watched this earlier today for the first time. It's a charming film, not flawless but one of those old Hollywood epics I love just for the atmosphere, mood and style.
First time hearing about this movie called "Diane"...I read it was a flop movie, didn't do well at the boxoffice..I'll have to check it out myself and watch this movie...Lana Turner was a beauty and Roger Moore so handsome..How bad could this movie be!??
