  • Searing heat is expanding on both coasts, placing 55 million people under heat warnings and advisories. In Portland, Oregon, the all-time high was just shattered for two days in a row as the temperature hit 112 degrees. NBC’s Guad Venegas reports from Portland, and TODAY’s Al Roker forecasts how long the sizzling heat will last.

      @@jzen1455 Ok, I found the Portland Int'l temperature records. So they're showing there were 15 days since 2010 that exceed 100 degrees. For comparison, from 1938 to 1948, there were also 15 days that exceeded 100 degrees, but they don't show any data pre-1938, and there would have been a lot of them in the 30s since that was the dust bowl era, (ie, extremely hot). From 2000 to 2010 there were also 15 days that exceeded 100. From 1990 to 2000, there were 12 days that exceeded 100 degrees. My point is just that an outlier outcome doesn't indicate a trend. Basically in any given decade, portland can expect about 15 days to exceed 100 fahrenheit, at least, at the airport.

Yeah the earth cooled for about 3.8 billion years, but has remained fairly normal for millions of years but does have fluctuations of ice ages, followed by warm years. But you ignored what I said because you are embracing the anti-climate change thinking set forth by religionists who are terrified of Communism. Climate change is a fact just as evolution is. These facts don't care about political ideologies, rather they are just facts.
      We have fairly accurate weather data in all of the large cities on the planet going back to the 1700's. At no time has there ever been a heat wave that shattered all time record highs by 10-12 degrees. It just doesn't happen.
      In other words, if this same hi pressure system set itself up over southern California, Death Valley would set an all time world record of 144 degrees. Phoenix would hit 132, and Vegas 127. It is important that we recognize this because if Phoenix ever hit 132, people would drop like flies.

But nowhere in Oregon were there large-scale power failures. A couple of hotels had insufficient air conditioning for conditions.
      I'd roundly criticize the Texas state government for its decisions on maintenance of its power grid. But I'd never ridicule Texans, especially for the catastrophe of that grid's failures. Texans rushed to the aid of their fellow citizens, putting themselves at risk for others. I call that commendable, merciful, and honorable.
      Let's be clear about where any fault lies. And then let's take action to fix the problems. And in the mean time, let's stop pointing fingers, middle ones or not, and stop shouting accusations. • @JohnLRice
      @JohnLRice 3 роки тому +1

      Possibly, and it's easy to look at only select data from the last 50 to 100 years and be concerned. But, humans have been around for 100,000 to 300,000 years, mammals have been around for about 200,000,000 years and life forms first emerged billions of years ago. For a vast majority of the last 250,000 years, average global temperatures have been estimated to be 10 to 30 degrees hotter than it is today. Temperatures have been on a steady rise for only the last 20,000 to 25,000 years. I think it's obvious that modern human activity contributes at least insignificantly to climate change, maybe even moderately, but the long term data suggests that significant climate change is natural (likely due to solar cycles) and while I think we should put reasonable efforts into reducing pollution and waste heat generation, I think we should put a majority of our "climate change dollars" into plans on how to survive extreme "natural" climate changes, hot or cold ones!
      Take a look at the "Grand Solar Minimum GSM News" UA-cam channel for more on this. His opinions may be a little bit biased in one direction for some people to appreciate, but I think it's worth watching at least one of his videos to provide balance on the whole climate change debate. 😎
