Nice video! Very thorough and yet to the point. North Yankton represents the state of North Dakota. Ludendorf most likely represents a small town in the northern part of the state close to the border with Canada, which is how Trevor comes into the picture. I would also venture to guess the fictrional town of Ludendorf is modeled after the real town of Dunseith based on the Germanic names of the towns respectively along with the physical locations. Also, Ludendorf has the beaver whereas Denseith has a giant turtle. Some elements such as the Fargo theater were added in for some extra flair since after all it is a video game.
Well we almost got something like that, a North Yankton expansion was one of 8 singleplayer DLCs cut from the game, amongst a LC map expansion, Agent Trevor, Michael in a zombie apocalypse and so on. The reason everything got scrapped was because GTA Online was a big success, causing Rockstar to shift gears and concentrate on the online mode. I'm pretty sure the small town like layout on the map above Ludendorff was a location to be added with this scrapped singleplayer DLC
If you look at the North Yankton State Patrol cars and uniforms it is very apparent that they were closely modeled after the North Dakota State Patrol.

Respectfully, for those who live in the Midwestern United States and have made your way out to rural areas, you knew the answer to this video from the very start. I’ve been to so many small towns in the midwest while just passing through that I could easily name like 20 towns that have nearly identical layouts to North Yankton. They almost all look the same just with minor differences here and there.
thank you, i grew up in Pennsylvania and even I knew as a teen when playing this game, it’s not any particular town, it’s just a town meant to looks like it was along the Canadian border and fit the vibe of anywhere in that part of the midwest. Minnesota, ND, iowa etc. all look like this in winter in small ass towns.
Otto Von Bismarck was The German Chancellor until 1890, and he died in 1898; he was not a World War I Chancellor. And also, Ludendorff can't be based off of Bismark, since the former is only a small town like Paleto Bay, whilst the latter is a pretty big city (in fact it's the state capital of North Dakota, as well as the state's most populous city (only behind Fargo)). But, on another note: perhaps the state of South Yankton has a city named Dakota in it. And, one more thing: excluding mountains, I don't think that there's anywhere in America, or even The World for that matter (besides The North and South Poles), where it's snowy all year-round like it seems to be in North Yankton.
The way Rockstar games brains work with small towns - is usually geographical similarities. So they would use the Dakota Territories Capitol - Yankton, as the basis for the name North Yankton. South Yankton, would indicate it was in South Dakota. North, in the North. Yankton, is the bridge between the two - just like how they combine car brands into one, it really helps for "alternate reality" reasons. A big plot point, is the story Trevor tells Lamar while Franklin sleeps, on the way to Paleto Bay with the cars. This is in the mission "Pack Man" - Trevor vividly describes his first job where he met Michael, and the Boss they were working for. Airports in the middle of no where, are common up here in North and South Dakota. Especially Airports that seem to move "freight" and only freight. During this encounter, Trevor talks about how he shoots their old boss in the eye with a Flare Gun. They had to "Drop him in a lake, on the way" (to Canada) "the plane never smelt the same since" - Now when we imagine North and South Dakota, South Dakota does not have lakes (that border any borders) Northern North Dakota (where I am from) has the Turtle Mountains, an Indian Reservation, that has *VAST* lakes, bushland, hills, and trees. We have a lot of unsolved murders up here, and we also have many many stories of crimes like this happening, while low flying aircraft fly over the Canadian Border and the Snow Mobiles run through the mountains at night also smuggling illicit cargo, during the Winter months. It's due to these similarities, that I believe North Yankton takes place in North Dakota, due to the vast wilderness and terrain we do not share with South Dakota. We also have to remember Trevor is a Canadian citizen, that grew up directly south of the Canadian Border. Thus, canonically connecting the dots that they smuggle freight in and out of Canada utilizing the vast Northern Wilderness. Also, when you are in Bismarck - you will look off towards the south and see the VAST hills of the Badlands - which are visible in Ludenorff as well We also have a big meth problem up here. Just like Bully, they won't be clear where exactly it takes place. That way, any small town individual from the northern midwest feels they have a "place in their hearts" with this story. Last example - ND 2004 State Patrol vehicle had a Native American headdress while the one in GTA V North Yankton, has a Buffalo head while sporting the same exact pattern and colors.

0:50 while they did patch the playlist method, it is still possible to visit North Yankton and best part about it? In actual freemode not in a job. But it is not a feasible method as that one requires you joining someone who has an account in Bad Sport. Attempting to join that person will kick you back in the session but will keep half of the North Yankton’s map loaded in (like it was the case with the playlist method)
There’s a glitch you can use it’s on some channel I forget the name you have to play bury the hatchet as Trevor and have the interaction menu open and when the screen goes black to teleport you to north Yankton you have to like close the interaction menu so Trevor dies and then you can go into director mode and north Yankton will be loaded in
It wouldn't be the first time Rockstar made a GTA game include two states kind of mashed into one. GTA 4's Alderney IS supposed to be a separate state, representing New Jersey and it's proximity to New York, however if you were casually playing GTA 4 you wouldn't even likely notice because their basically one connected city, like when Berlin was split down the middle into two countries till the 80s. They look and operate almost the exact same, LC buses don't change in Alderney along with most services from Liberty City carrying over. They basically mashed New Jersey and New York into a single state.
The very fact there are videos like this surrounding the story of the game is a sure sign of a certified hit. Only a handful of games elicit this sort of attention. 😊
The one thing that confused me with the Yankton plates are that for San Andreas, the game modeled both civilian plates and state/municipal plates. However for North Yankton both civilian and police vehicles use the same plate. I don’t know how easy it is to look up what Municipal plates looked like for either of the Dakotas in the mid 2000’s, or if that would even serve as any more beneficial context. I’d assume they only did one plate in the game for the sake of brevity and simplicity.
Just judging by the nomenclature of locations in GTA games since the turn of the century, Ludendorff, North Yankton is probably meant to be the GTA version of Bismark, North Dakota.
Y’all can remember that glitch where have a friend in a invite only session and then you start the prologue and they must invite you and once they invite you you can explore the map freely but they patched that glitch but you do the workaround glitch now
I immediately also looked up what the North Dakota and South Dakota plates looked like, because Rockstar USUALLY portrays these things quite well. It's technically a South Dakota State Trooper Plate. It looks FAIRLY similar to a North Yankton Plate if you ask me! I also believe its a mix of ND & SD because that's also something Rockstar is known to do. Shrink irl locations, etc.
I may be wrong but. The only name I could correlate Yankton to a irl place is Yukon, Canada. Idk but I feel like it could be. Yankton-Yukon, both start with a Y. And it’s also very snowy out there irl.
It's likely that Ludendorff is implied to be either ND or SD, maybe even bordering the two, but that's as close as we can really get to a definitive answer. It's fun to theorize about this stuff but I don't think there's any reason to go crazy in detail over it when the simple answer is R* found and took inspiration from multiple places (like the Fargo Theatre), put them all together and made a quick map for the prologue. Because of this there simply isn't a definitive answer as to where the town is and due to R*'s nature of parodying yet not making 1:1 copies, it's simply just a place with sprinkles of real inspiration mixed in with completely fictional elements like the beaver.
Pretty interesting video. I'd honestly argue that the state Ludendorph is in is Yankton and when they say "North Yankton", it's like saying "South Florida". Effectively, it's like North Dakota and South Dakota are one state. Though it's also weird with GTA IV's Liberty City. Alderney is in another state, yet the cops there have LC cars, and Gerry is sent to prison in Alderney rather than Liberty State. It's also like how in GTA SA, Las Venturas is technically still in San Andreas, even though Las Vegas is in a separate state from Las Angeles and San Francisco.
I’m glad I was able to do the glitch before it was patched. There wasn’t much to see since the whole map of North Yankton wasn’t loaded in but it was still cool.
Trevor is not technically Candadian,he was born in the North of America,OR..his parents were American but he was born in Canada. He also says several times he was doing stuff by the border he was also in the Canadian Air Force.I think he had American parents but was not and raised partially in Canada but also in the US near north Yankton
Trevor's mother is English (if we accept the Houser’s mother voice accent as canon), his father is very likely Canadian. Trevor himself has a Canadian accent, which he hardly got without living in Canada for a long time, especially in his youth.
I watched the whole video thinking "it has to be a mix of all three" and to my surprise I was correct! Glad that the mystery has finally been solved, although it still doesn't explain why Rockstar would constantly prevent us from going there in both freeroam and online xD
6:31 as a history fan, it hurt to hear that. Bismarck was the first German chancellor. The king of Prussia put him in charge of foreign policy and over the course of a few decades he managed to unite Germany. I’m oversimplifying though. Also the town is called that due to the large number of German emigrants that settled there in the 19th century
based on what you've said: I think "Yankton" or "North Yankton" is just the state name (like San Andreas, Liberty, and Leonida) and does not imply Ludendorff to be in SD From there, you make 2 very good cases for Ludendorff being either Bismarck or Fargo or a mishmash of both. After all, afaik, Alderney is not its own state, and Las Venturas (used to?) be in the state of San Andreas
Liberty - New York Alderney - New Jersey San Andreas - California Robada - Nevada (not canon, but very implied due to Tierra-Robada) North Yankton - North Dakota South Yankton - South Dakota Leonida - Florida Gloria - Georgia (not canon, but in GTA VI leaks there is a strange red license plate with “GL, USA”)
It's very likely that it's a mix of both, since Rockstar already did it: San Andreas is California+Nevada, GTA IV map is New York + New Jersey. Btw, based on natural landscape it seems more inspired by South Dakota, since North is almost entirely flat as a pancake
It's Bismarck. I know it's Bismarck, because if you look at Bismarck on a road map and put it side-by-side to the map of Ludendorff in the pause menu, it looks uncannily similar in its layout. In fact, the road Michael drives on in Bury the Hatchet mirrors a highway going east and west right by the town.
From a history standpoint, it would make sense to me that in the GTA universe, the Dakota territory was instead named the Yankton Territory, (since it is actually a plausible name.) So the state itself is probably the geographic equivalent to North Dakota in-universe, but borrowing some elements from real life South Dakota as well
My GF of almost 8 years - I mean years ago - was born and raised in Yankton SD. She was cool. He friends were... mostly cool. Also weird. Like, they had their own language and I was quickly bestowed the name "Scooter" with no discernible explanation. I just went with it.
I'm definitely not the first to think of this but what I came up after watching this video is that North Yankton may not be an actual state, but rather a region of a state named Yankton due to the in game license plate simply saying "Yankton". It could be a popular term to describe that portion of the state, kinda like how people say "Upstate New York" to refer to northern New York. Also if it is just one state, then it would perfectly fit into the Yankton nickname referring to when it was the capital of the Dakota territory before it was split into 2 states. So the place being a blend of North Dakota and South Dakota would make alot of sense.
North Yankton could be based off of both North and South Dakota. I wouldn't put it past R* to do this because they did about the same thing in GTA San Andreas, where Los Santos (Los Angeles, CA) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas, NV) were a part of the same state.
I would rather assume that the reason for blocking exploration is the state of the area. Only the area you are supposed to be in is detailed and has proper collision. Venturing off the path leads you to bugged areas, low detail areas or just no collision areas. I doubt Rockstar cares about the community finding out where the inspiration is for Ludendorff is from. They would probably just take down any content related to figuring it out instead of just patching glitches
It‘s like a fiction state like USA, State of San Andreas. Where the citys of Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas and other tiny towns exists: Whetstone and mount Chilliad in Flint County (or like mount Diabolo and other smaller towns south of San Francisco in real life.
One thing that made me knew that North Yankton wasn't based in Canada is how would the witness protecting Michel have worked if he did his crime in another country, and how would he have ties with the FIB.

Love the video I didnt know this until now.
I was born in Fargo ND so that's awesome I'd love to see R* do a parody HD city based on Minneapolis MN
Finally the GTA Video I've been waiting for my whole life
It makes sense since at the time, Rockstar would mishmash stuff together. Just look at any base game vehicle that came out in GTAV during launch.
The very fact there are videos like this surrounding the story of the game is a sure sign of a certified hit. Only a handful of games elicit this sort of attention. 😊
There’s tons of games that have videos like this. Jetro just focuses on gta
Red deads maps are kind of a overall amalgamation or Vibes of a certain area or areas so would be surprising if they just mix and match from real life
The one thing that confused me with the Yankton plates are that for San Andreas, the game modeled both civilian plates and state/municipal plates.
Another great video, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Just judging by the nomenclature of locations in GTA games since the turn of the century, Ludendorff, North Yankton is probably meant to be the GTA version of Bismark, North Dakota.
Y’all can remember that glitch where have a friend in a invite only session and then you start the prologue and they must invite you and once they invite you you can explore the map freely but they patched that glitch but you do the workaround glitch now
Compare the North Yaknton State Police cars from the first mission of story mode with the North Dakota State Police cars from the 1980s.
Your channel us new but its so good wow keep it up!
Thank you dude, glad your enjoying it!
It’s Fargo North Dakota, based on the major theatre in the game, but the name (Ludendorff) is a reference to Bismarck
it's exploration is a cut content, originally there are voice lines for protagonists to ask taxi driver to drive to North Yankton.
North Yankton is located in the Dakotas area of the United States.
North Dakota, there, saved you 8 minutes and 44 seconds, sorry for any offense I know if y’all wanna watch the video.
6:35 Bismarck died long before World War I.
Was hoping for some clues how to get there in the game. It looks really nice and good to explore a new place 🙂
North yankton is south and north dakota mixed while also being on the south of the canadian border INgame while also having some hints of fargo
so, it's in Fargsmarck Manitoba (it's Fargo, Bismarck and Canada all at once)
Great video!
Thanks!
Also the town is called that due to the large number of German emigrants that settled there in the 19th century
based on what you've said:
I think "Yankton" or "North Yankton" is just the state name (like San Andreas, Liberty, and Leonida) and does not imply Ludendorff to be in SD
From there, you make 2 very good cases for Ludendorff being either Bismarck or Fargo or a mishmash of both.
After all, afaik, Alderney is not its own state, and Las Venturas (used to?) be in the state of San Andreas
Liberty - New York
Alderney - New Jersey
San Andreas - California
Robada - Nevada (not canon, but very implied due to Tierra-Robada)
North Yankton - North Dakota
South Yankton - South Dakota
Leonida - Florida
Gloria - Georgia (not canon, but in GTA VI leaks there is a strange red license plate with “GL, USA”)
Alderney is literally a state and Las Venturas was only part of the state of San Andreas in the 3D era
It's very likely that it's a mix of both, since Rockstar already did it: San Andreas is California+Nevada, GTA IV map is New York + New Jersey.
Btw, based on natural landscape it seems more inspired by South Dakota, since North is almost entirely flat as a pancake
my biggest question is if its in a realistic continent sized place instead of a smal island like the rest of the places
Who would have guessed a location in GTA is made up of general concepts and ideas from a very wide area with some landmarks thrown in!?
It's Bismarck. I know it's Bismarck, because if you look at Bismarck on a road map and put it side-by-side to the map of Ludendorff in the pause menu, it looks uncannily similar in its layout. In fact, the road Michael drives on in Bury the Hatchet mirrors a highway going east and west right by the town.
Also the fact that both Bismarck and Ludendorff are names for famous German leaders
It makes sense because rockstar also makes lore friendly cars by mixing elements of many different ones
I think that as R* likes to put various types of car models in one in the new releases on gtao they did the same with north yankton
I live in North Dakota and the amount on snow that’s in Yankton is accurate to ND weather
North Dakotan from Bismarck Here. I can confirm we have patches that prevent exploring here
It's kind of wild when you think about it.
Rockstar made a whole new map/town for only ONE mission, but never released a story-mode DLC.
*two missions ☝🤓
@vinchin8486 what is the second mission in story mode?
@ idk the name of it, but when Trevor snaps and finds out who’s in Michael’s gave, then a shootout at the cemetery as Micheal
I just thought it was based off of somewhere in Canada like most people probably did. The more you know.
It would be cool if North Yankton came back in GTA IV
North Yanktan is a mixture of the locations.
North Yankton could be based off of both North and South Dakota. I wouldn't put it past R* to do this because they did about the same thing in GTA San Andreas, where Los Santos (Los Angeles, CA) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas, NV) were a part of the same state.
Aaaaaaanother banger 💥
they probably just fused north dakota and south dakota together into one state
Just like San Andreas state being a mixture of California and Nevada.
What if the prologue heist was in South Dakota, meanwhile “michael’s grave” is in North Dakota?
Maybe the real Ludendorff lies within the game files, where it should be.
They would probably just take down any content related to figuring it out instead of just patching glitches
better to play a small part well than a major part poorly. keep on keeping on
So anyone remember when you could fly there in online on gta old gen back in the day
I would strongly say North Dakota. The pollock theatre resembles the Fargo Theatre in ND, could be wrong tho
I don't think they limit access because it's not accurate, but because it's a tiny space with low-poly models at the edges and missing collisions
It's clearly an amalgamation of different states and areas within the mid-west and maybe Canada.
One thing that made me knew that North Yankton wasn't based in Canada is how would the witness protecting Michel have worked if he did his crime in another country, and how would he have ties with the FIB.
I have a feeling this would've been an awesome DLC that was canceled...
Sounds like Yankton, Bismarck and Fargo are the only places someone that would work for rockstar would fly into.
