How is the weather balloon retrieved after launch, or is it not retrieved at all?

The actual balloon pops and ends up as a bunch of small pieces that fall back to earth. The box with the instruments will also fall back to earth. It is likely given the location that the box ends up in the ocean or in some other hard to reach spot. Sometimes people on svalbard do find the boxes and they can be sent back to the station in Ny-Ålesund for a small reward.
