    Last Week Tonight team,
if you’re reading these comments: having subtitles in multiple languages (Chinese for me) for this video would be IMMENSELY helpful. I would honestly sit my parents down and have them watch this, because this is exactly how they’ve been radicalized and mislead. The tragic irony in all this is that I can’t easily find anything in their native language that goes in-depth like this about the spread of misinformation in immigrant communities via private chat apps. Best I have in my arsenal is Chinese subtitles for The Social Dilemma. It’s such an uphill battle. Beyond the awesome greeting animations, subtitles in multiple languages would be an incredible gift to help with this issue.

You can set the subtitles to any language via auto-translate. Not sure that the accuracy will be good enough.

Some of the ones they send are modified to be more Christian, but almost every example in this video I have seen from my aunts and grandparents at least once. XD

What I did in my family chat every time someone shared something clearly fake was post an article debunking it and remind everyone (again!) not to share things over WhatsApp unless they could investigate it first. I think it took over a year of doing it, but after gaining the support of other adults in the chat we don't have to deal with this anymore.

Sometimes I tried to my parents about this. My mom is kinda unsure about all of this whereas my dad won't move an inch. He will keep believing in this shit. Since my dad talks with my mom more than I do, eventually mom believes in this shit too.

      If ur seriously asking:
I just told her some few basic thing to look for when reading something on any article.
      1. Google who the article writer's name, is it just a random blogger or a professional.etc etc
      2. Google any institution name cited in the article, is it real, or does it have anything to do with what is writen etc etc.
      3. Look at if the site is reputable, someones personal blog, a real academic site, etc etc.
These 3 dont seem like a big deal, but it gives someone a general understanding if an article is based of personal opinion or real research. I told my mom other things too, these are only some of them at the top of my head.
Ps: u can also reverse search image of the writers profile picture if there are any, scammers tend to use stock image for their personal photo, using other peoples headshots.

The conspiracy theories and baseless statements that spread in WeChat groups is genuinely insane and it is practically uncheckable, especially when Chinese culture emphasizes a respect for elders that stops most younger people like me from fact checking their idiotic articles. I think it’s an extension of the culture shock. I noticed that a lot with taxidrivers that I know well. For the most part they only really associate in their own communities, they generally speak to people from their own culture at work when they aren’t driving, or when they are driving, they are either on the phone to their friends from the same culture, or on the phone to somebody back home. So literally everything they are hearing is from a friend of a friend of mine who sends them a video about something or whatever. I used to go to school with a South Korean chick who moved to Australia to improve her English, but she found the whole experience of a different culture and language so threatening that for comfort she only spoke to other Koreans in their own language, she only attended Korean church, and every day she would speak to her family in Korea on the phone for three hours. She was living in Australia but she had no idea what was actually going on in Australia unless she heard it from friends, Who are also experiencing the same thing as her. and that’s before you even broach the topic of the fact that what is being pumped out in English isn’t all that much better. So what hope do some of these people have. Ever wonder why so many immigrants don’t like immigrants? Because of this exact problem. Not being able to affectively communicate in a language that you need to leaves you blind and easy prey for manipulation. Look at the Cubans, all you have to do is say Castro Castro at them and they will get in line and do what you want out of pure Tara

Thus, students rarely questioned the opinions of their teachers or sources, as this information is considered truth.

I was working on the automated fact-checking problem for about 3 years, what I have noticed is that using fully automated fact-checking technologies is almost impossible because who would trust a softwares decision without giving appropriate justification. Therefore, the bottleneck is to find appropriate justification to the veracity of the claims made which is a very difficult and tedious task. You need to trust someone as a reference but that is simply not available in all languages due to many reasons (e.g., media censorship, etc.). This problem is too huge and difficult that I highly doubt it will be fixed in the next few years, it will probably take decades to develop automated or semi-automated methods that can help battle misinformation.

During the height of the pandemic, my Indian mother would send me a few Good Morning pics/messages and then call me to tell me about the BS she got on WhatsApp, which I then had to debunk. This was my routine every morning. Luckily she has gotten wiser now and just deletes stuff like that.

Next times reply to the conspiracy someones spread by saying. If you can’t take the time to fact check something before sending it to someone else. And I have news for you. I’ve got a business opportunity you just need to loan me $1000 and I promise you’ll make 10,000 in return.
And if they ask what the opportunities remind them that they didn’t fact check the thing they just sent you so why are you asking about it now?

If you are familiar with Last Week Tonight, then you know how much fact checking and research goes into producing these episodes. Since their brand of comedy focuses on parodying and taking down powerful people and corporations, they have to be vigilant about what they put out there. The legal team is thorough. For these reasons, we can feel confident in the information they share. LWT are the good guys.

As a Vietnamese living in Vietnam, it is extremely difficult to convince an old conservative person that considers young people's ideas are stupid or communist influence. I must emphasize wearing a damn mask is a health problem, not a political one.

I can't believe the left is attacking private messaging now.... unbelievable... you kids just eat their globalist authoritarianism right up... yal are just lining up to hand over every right you have... this entire video is about not allowing you to speak to another person without you both being monitored and censored... I can't believe the left is attacking private messaging now.... unbelievable... and you kids think this shit is "progressive"... Its a simple concept.. The left are globalist elitist authoritarians who believe their should be a one world gov and currency.. their goal is to expand the welfare and gov states to every person on the planet.. Growth and expansion of government and distribution.. that's it on the left.. there is no ideology, no platform.. the only goal is oppose the opposition, the left brings no ideas or progress to the table.. The right are conservatives that believe in the power of the individual and ones ability to capitalize on opportunity in a free market.. Less government, less federalization, more power and funding to local and smaller governments that can form to the communities that make them up.... Left is federalism and then globalism.. Right is capitalism and individual liberty with focus on merit and charity.. Not affirmative action and tax.. This is why young liberals are dismissed.. yal have never read a page of Plato's the Republic... Why should anyone trying to maintain one listen to a liberal brainwashed kid... taught by other liberal brainwashed kids who have never done anything with their lives but come back to high school and feel good about themselves teaching kids with comparable intelligences to themselves... If this wasn't the case every one of your teachers wouldn't be a liberal whos never ran a business or paid someone elses health insurance...
