I have rarely heard Haydn played with so much sensitivity and emotion. Unfortunately most of the time Haydn string quartets are played in a manner that is often very stately and dignified but also very dry and stale and somewhat ponderous to listen to after a while. What a relief it is to find a Haydn interpretation that is so full of life. This group's playing keeps your attention throughout the entire string quartet. The quartet is also miked in a very wonderfully clear way where all the instruments contribute to the whole, you can hear the parts of all separately, and no one instrument dominates.
Reading Geiringer in the attempt to understand why the Three Greats had such different trajectories for their lives. All indications appear history has neglected the deep contributions of enjoyment and genius 'Papa' provides us. Thanks for an 'illuminating' performance.
Part of the neglect can be attributed to the patronising and demeaning ‘Papa’ nickname which immediately - and falsely - taints the name of Joseph Haydn (sic) in the minds of the general listener.
