This is how Haydn should be performed ! Alive and vibrant and big sounding. With wit and charm and energy too. Great performance.

This music is nearly 250 old and it is as fresh and satifying as ever it has been. Mr Tost must have been delighted with this C major gem. The Danish Quartet do it justice in spades. Well done and thankyou.

that's because pretty much everything that came after it has been a regression compared with this high point in the western musical tradition.

The beauty and passion of this piece is wonderfully portrayed by this quartet, Bravo!

The slow movement is smashing, totally revolutionary.

Almost nothing in music is ‘revolutionary’ (clickbait), but is in nearly all cases ‘radical evolutionary (not clickbait); this magnificent quartet is as you rightly point out, the latter (as is everything in Beethoven often loosely and carelessly described as the former).

Their is no evolution in music or art or there would be something better than this, or art better than the Lascaux Caves.@@elaineblackhurst1509

The 1st violin parts for Op. 54 are very tough -- harder than some concertos. But never virtuosity for its own stake -- there's always wit, good taste and some real emotional depth. The Danish have been one of the world's best quartets for a while now -- play with precision, verve and sensitivity.

A year later, they are even more wonderful, The slow introduction to the finale is one of the most beautiful Haydn, or anyone else, ever wrote.

The cleanest playing of any quartet I've ever heard.

Très belle interprétation, pour une des plus belles œuvres de Haydn, un rien sous-estimée à mon humble avis !

Op. 54 # 2 is one of the few Haydn quartets I never knew until this week. The form is extraordinary in every way. As usual, you guys tickle me with elegance in every movement.

oh for a cd of them performing this - truly sublime. I already delight in their ECM recordings of traditional Danish music, and am now even more impressed by their versatile musicianship.

What a wild ride this quartet is! It seems to be a stream of conscious improvisation all the way through! And so very serious: And it's Haydn! ?What the heck was happening in his life at this moment of composition - Opus 54...?

Now that I've listened to FJ's Op 54 #2 more than 15 times, I think that Beethoven might have learned from Haydn what to accomplish in his own Op. 127-135.

I am here for the 2. 4:30 . My god, it is like the healing hand of mother earth cupping around the wounded souls of mankind.
If I can't compose something more fitting, this will be my 'Trauerfeierlied' (death ceremony song in english I suppose).

      You misunderstood my reply…
It wasn’t a good idea to leave out the repeat - I’m agreeing with you 100%.
In the music of Mozart and Haydn, then Beethoven as well, it is totally wrong to ignore the composers’ da capo instructions as it unbalances both the movement, and the work as a whole.

    • @geoffreykeen3989
      @geoffreykeen3989 2 роки тому +1

@@elaineblackhurst1509 Many thanks for the clarification - obviously a big difference between agreeing that it wasn't a good idea and saying it wasn't left out. I don't know why even the best ensembles think it's OK to play fast and loose with repeats. Of course the music still works - it's great stuff - but it's always reduced. My golden rule: always do all repeats. Kind regards.
