Sing Yesterday for Me did a very good job of invoking that older look, even if it flopped due to pacing issues. It is possible to have a distinctive look with the right team, be it capturing an old look or reinvent something new like Urusei Yatsura has amazingly done.

Great video, and I would be sure to watch any new adaptation.
I think most likely would be them just continuing from where 2011 left off. However, if they did start from the beginning, Kite is a *must* to be in episode 1. IMO he was critical to Togashi's vision. Not even mentioning him for 76 episodes was the one major mistake Madhouse made for their 2011 adaptation. Heck in 1999 Nippon didn't even know who he would turn out to be, and their episode one had Kite in half their first episode.

    • @Indeeee

As much as I agree with you about 2011's visual style, I thought they paced action scenes really well and clearly. Would definitely help viewers with understanding a certain complicated fight scene in the manga. The 2011 anime was also obsessed with dutch angles which I found funny (though I like dutch angles a lot so I wasn't complaining)

I appreciate what you said about the visuals, but I honestly think the 2011 series holds up perfectly fine with modern anime as it is.
Of course, they'd add the CG backgrounds & VFX for big fights like Demon Slayer & Bleach, but otherwise the previous aesthetics still look great. It wasn't as dated as Bleach, still looks better than One Piece (though even OP has improved in its ongoing arc) and even offers superior animation to the latter.
If it just got the modern treatment of other big shounen, it would be perfect. I've honestly held off reading the existing manga arcs that weren't adapted just to see them play out for the first time in anime form as I did the original. The show was damn near perfect, and aside from Beserk, deserves to continue more than basically any other anime!

Maybe they could do something like get Togashi into the anime studio, even if he can't finish the manga he can help them plot the story or whatever for an anime "original" ending, similar to how Kubo and Isayama worked with the studios for Bleack and AoT to alter some stuff from the manga.

I'd say Kill la Kill's attempt of getting that late Showa-era anime feel is a success. Bringing over tropes from those days like repeated scrolling of a frame, harmony frame, and callback moments shaded in 1 color and 4:3 aspect ratio. The spirit is there even though they did not try to replicate it using materials or techniques of the time other than hand-painted backgrounds (not that I'm aware of any direct attempts of replications on the technical side). And oh boy ain't that show a looker.

Congrats on the finished Home Renovations! Enjoy a break while you have the chance!
My history with Hunter X Hunter isn't quite as extensive as many fans, I watched part of the 2011 adaptation a few years back, but I haven't even finished the Greed Island Arc. Part of my reasoning has always been that I find it hard to watch a series if it doesn't have a guarantee of ending. With neither Anime finishing a full adaptation of the source material, and the Manga itself being on hiatus for as long as it was, I never found the motivation to continue this series in any form -- Even if I did enjoy it while I was watching it.
Since then, I've looked into the '99 series a bit, and am of the opinion that it certainly looks better than the 2011 version. It may be that I have a soft spot for the 90s Anime aesthetic, and Hunter X Hunter's style was born in the 90s, so it certainly fits the 90s style better than the 2011 version. The Animation was cleaner, and the darker tones are a better fit for a series that's as surprisingly dark as Hunter X Hunter. It's like comparing the Evangelion Rebuild movies to the original series (The End of Evangelion released in '97, and the first rebuild movie in 2007, so there's a similar gap between these two movies and the '99 and 2011 versions of HxH), certainly there's more movement in the modern movies, but the look of the original series can't be beat -- The atmosphere of the original Evangelion can't be touched with fancy effects and modern compositing, even with Anno working on the modern movies, and many shots being completely recreated especially in the first movie, the original version still looks better to me. Again, the animation improved, the original series used a lot of still frames whereas the movie clearly had a lot more time and money to animate its characters -- And yet, the original series still has the better character design (Even if the designs were pretty much unchanged, I think most agree the characters look better in the original series than the modern movies), a more fitting mood thanks to the darker lighting, and the staff used their constraints greatly to their advantage. The still frames in Evangelion are still talked about as being unnerving, and even though they're just in the series to pad out the episode's runtime, I think the majority of fans prefer having them to a flashy sequence any day.
The biggest problem in my opinion with the 2011 version in my opinion, wasn't so much the cleaner look, but the character designs. They changed the art style, but the character designs weren't really changed to fit a simpler style, they looked like the original characters (In the 90s Version), but simpler -- Still not as simple as the Manga mind you, but still. A modern Anime should utilize what makes Anime great today, rather than what worked ten to twenty years ago. We can try and recreate the old look, but it'll always viewed as an imitation rather than a recreation. Another problem with Hunter X Hunter that may not work so well, is the pacing. It's fine to have a few episodes to explain something in your series when you're expecting a hundred or so episodes -- But if you were to move to a modern Anime production, with 12 episode seasons or coures, you can't sit around and waste multiple weekly episodes with exposition. This is why the pacing of modern Anime is a lot more punchy, and why you don't get ten episodes of training in Jujutsu Kaisen -- And because of that, it can sometimes feel like the characters aren't getting any room to breath. We've mostly cut out the idea of filler all together, and so quiet moments are far and few between.
So, between the two options: If we got a new Hunter x Hunter series, I would like to see some adjustments to the story. I wouldn't want it to go into an entirely new direction, of course. But I've heard from a few friends, that they couldn't get into Hunter x Hunter due to the length of the prologue. I don't feel like there's much they could cut out of the original series without completely changing the whole story however, they could always go the FMA: Brotherhood route, and expect that the viewer is familiar with the original Manga, and cut out many parts of the first couple arcs. But this would certainly scare off new fans -- Especially if a lot was being glossed over, and then later became important. So, if their goal was to attract new fans, I'd personally like to see them go the Trigun Stampede route with the series, where they take the characters, worlds and ideas of the original, while putting their own unique spin on the series. I personally don't think that any new Director, should be forced to replicate the style of either the '99 or 2011 versions, because I feel like a director should be given complete control over their adaptation. It's easiest for a team to work on creating their own vision, rather than try and recreate someone else's after all.
Otherwise, I'd like to see the 2011 staff continue the Anime in the style of Bleach. A modern production, that looks good, but is faithful to the original Magna, without having to go back and redo what the 2011 series did. I personally would feel motivated to continue the series from where I left off if this were the case, otherwise I may just go back and start reading the Manga now that it's left hiatus.
Regardless of which route they go, it's fun to speculate!

It's weird, because I don't mind some designs like Gon and Killua, some like Kurapika were done far better in my opinion, but others were hit really hard by the inconsistency. 2011 had this too, but 99 really dropped the ball with Hisoka.
Kind of worried what a current adaptation would look like, because his design in the Greed Adventure trailer looked a little... off, for lack of a better word. Maybe I'm being nitpicky, but he's a pretty major character in the grand scheme of things.

'Absoloutely?' That's confidence right there, and I rate it. Would be down for a shorter series, especially with studios being overloaded with work and multiple series. I don't know about Bleach either, but that new adaptation looks crispy.
Your love for the series shone through and, as a fellow HxH enjoyer, I'm here for it. The little touches like the transitions were awesome too. Was a bit scandalised that you were saying it shouldn't be like 99 or 2011, which I love for different reasons, but I get it. Really it should stand on its own as something clearly visually *now*, whether that's through 3D models or a looser aesthetic or something else.

has anyone else thought of something like that, or just me? sorry if this sounds stupid I just thought it was an interesting thought and wanted to throw it out there for maybe others to put their own thought's into it.

Great video Canipa! do you think a format like one piece currently could be a viable solution for long running anime again?

    • @TheCanipaEffect
      @TheCanipaEffect  Рік тому +5

I don't think so. I think One Piece and other long-running anime are able to exist today thanks to many years of building relationships and schedules that would make them possible. I can't imagine all too many of them would be started today (outside of easier-to-produce kids shows) when most studios are struggling to even get 12 episodes out.

Unpopular opinion, if the hunter hunter anime comes back it won’t be nearly as popular in the west because a lot of its popularity comes from this new anime wave which has a lot more simplistic viewers who were attached to the light hearted vibe the 2011 version had and could barely take the darker direction the chimera ant arc had, seeing as gon and killua won’t return in the anime for a while if ever on top of how dark the series is now with the phantom troupe background, the several sadistic kakin princes, and kurapika becoming the new main character, I don’t see it gaining the same shonen popularity in the west it once had

I mean probably not as much but it will still be over the average popular, enough that it'd be worth animating, did you see how the manga volume 37 sold?? I'd say people would actually be pleased by the animation adaptation being that the Dark Continent Arc is a whole lot of text and a lot of people can't digest it. Sounds like good deal to me.

The problem with the new Bleach anime is that it's cutting scenes. There's a lot of fights in the final arc. I don't see how they're getting it done in 52 episodes.

*There would be no meaningful difference.*
The issue is, in the twelve years between the first and the second anime, from 1999 to 2011, there was a drastic change in production. A complete transfer from analogue to digital, from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio, from 480p standard definition to 1080p full high definition. But another twelve years after, literally nothing has changed.
For now, neural networks still can not do frame interpolation from 12 FPS to 60 FPS well enough automatically, but in the next twelve years, it might be possible. This means that a new anime can be done with smooth 60 FPS animation. Even more: most animators will lose their jobs since only key frames will be enough to draw. Neural networks will draw everything else.
In regard to non-anime related things, the changes also slow down: from 1999 to 2011 we have got Siri, iPhone, iPad, Facebook, Twitter, Google, Amazon, but from 2011 to 2023 we have got true mass production of electric cars and neural networks "creating" pictures from text or making photos or videos better on your phone. In the next twelve years from 2023 to 2035, there will be way more neural networks in all fields. It is going to be a major change as lots of professions will be replaced by it.
