Lugansky is the greatest living interpreter of Rachmaniniffs solo piano music. In the Etudes Tableaux and Preludes he is comparable to Richter.I wish he could get a conductor like Giergiev in the Concertos however.
this video was deleted from youtube for some time, I couldn't find it!! Thank you very much for reuploading it! In my opinion, Nikolai Lugansky is currently the best pianist in the world and the best performer of Rachmaninov! :)
Anche io penso come Lei...l'Allievo Prediletto di T.N.penso sia il più grande Pianista vivente....e sicuramente nessuno come Lui in Rachmaninov! Marco Rotondi
I personally had the opportunity to meet him 5 years ago. He came in my country and played a Brahms concerto. That was so qualitative. When the concert ended, I spoke to him and I took a photo with him. He also gave me an autograph. That was really cool.
I love the lush beauty of this first version of the Sonata, circa the 3rd Cto., as opposed to the more acerbic and shorter 2nd version. This is a terrific performance.
This guy is legit. Not a competition banger/thumper. He is completely capable of that kind of playing, but he must have outgrown that at age ten, assuming he ever played like that at all.
Many new pianist play Rach , the concertos, the preludes, but the Sonata 1 and 2 ! Something else ; Lugansky has the rapsodic and romance with the architecture of the piece; Last i heard a big sounding pianist, Lazar berman
Terrific performance. Unfortunately the piano needs a minor tuning and re-voicing. There's a funny ringing sound in the upper harmonics around the middle octave. You can hear it at 7:05 and again at 8:40 - 8:45, and again from 11:00 - 11:30 whenever he plays middle G.
You are right. Something resonates there which schould'nt resonate, but I don't think it has to do with tuning or re-voicing. I think that some small part of the instrument is'nt fixated properly and resonates whem he hits the middle G-string.
It may not even be in or on the piano itself. It could be a loose microphone mount or something else close to the piano. It is hard to tell without actually being there.
The sound is super compressed: not much difference between piano and fortissimo, and all the lower notes are muted. A Bösendorfer does not sound like this. Bösendorfer Official, you might want to change your sound engineers, and remaster this recording.
Glad he played the 1st (hard) version of this piece. Great sound and virtuosity but (IMHO) nowhere near the incredible Van Cliburn live version. He really made the piece "sing" with all those long phrases and inner melodies and above all the melody. But then, he was at the height of his powers
Man ... I wish I could play like that..
If only the camera was of the quality of the piano.
If Sergei heard Nikolai, he would probably learn how to listen to his own masterpiece with intrigue.

Lugansky is nothing short of awesome...
The ending still gives me goosebumps years later.
I have a deeply emotional, almost spiritual connection (and reaction) to 15:32 - 15:53. It reminds me of tolling bells. Just beautiful.
Where do you even start to get something so impossibly virtuosic both under your fingers and into your memory? Stunning performance.
Unfassbar schön Nikolaij🙏🙏
Overpoweringly wonderful. Much thanks to Bosendorfer, Sion Festival, Sergei and Nikolai.
Incredible! Such a master of the most difficult art!!

+geuros You are right!
Absolutely.I love this original 1913 version of the Sonata more than the 1936 revised version.Lugansky breathes life into every note.
Absolutely right !

I think the imperial grand adds such a great effect to the tone with the added deeper overtones.
This is what $300,000 dollar pianos were made for!
What a monster! I was expecting the crowd to roar in applause at the end.. then noticed their age group . :)
Wonderful performance, and a fine piano.
Rachmaninoff was a maniac lol Lovely rendition
Staggering pianism. Wow, to play this fiendishly difficult work from memory! Kudos.

He plays a hybrid version using the same idea that Horowitz used but with his own blend of the original and the revised one.
@@andreamyob9458 thanks, I was just wondering about the changed places

So unbelievable🙌

Apparently Lugansky will perform with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 2019. I hope to be there.
Wtf this footage is from 2012? It looks and sounds like something out of the 90s
Hardly surprising when you consider the microphones are under the lid of the piano. Ridiculous.
I love Nikolai Lugansky's play. I just wonder what the pin/clip behind his neck was for.
Price -tag of his talls ?
Unique🙏🙏🙏wonderful Nikolaji

have now words, but WOW

It's a bit ironic to hear that noise in a video uploaded by Bösendorfer themselves ^^
You're right, though I probably wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out. I suspect it's a simple unison tuning issue.

Ah, is that what that is? I assumed it was an artifact of audio compression.
Bravo. Maestro

agreed. It sounds like it was recorded on a mobile phone
Big sound and technique.
Lugansky : Let me show you how to play piano like a real Russian 😎🔥
Rachmaninov's in the right hand is superb👌

?
отлично
great !!!
I tried looking for someone who could Interpret the same way on how I interpret this piece and so i found lugansky.
Ok
Yeah we all trust and believe you can play this piece and at this level 😂
There is a slight difference in difficulty between yiruma and rachmaninov
He's having the best pianorgasm
👍
Which version of the second sonata is ? I have both of scores and it's neither 1913 version nor 1931
It's the 1913
Evidence: 4:02
Lugansky plays the difficult version .
It’s basically the 1913 version with a few 1931 elements thrown in.
Glad he played the 1st (hard) version of this piece. Great sound and virtuosity but (IMHO) nowhere near the incredible Van Cliburn live version. He really made the piece "sing" with all those long phrases and inner melodies and above all the melody. But then, he was at the height of his powers
Wonderful Wonderful. But the recording is very poor quality or the piano is lacking in Rachmaninov levels of sound
13:00
太陽の風
Piano e intérprete soberbios, pero pobre la calidad del sonido, una pena.
Lugansky >> Ashkenazi (especially for Rach). :)
10:30 non allegro
👍
