Its worth mentioning this ban is motivated by US politicians funded by Israeli government trying to curtail speech that is critical of Israel's brazen genocide in Gaza. The US can't control Tiktok the away they can for Facebook and other social media. So they are trying to ban tiktok because a lot of accounts on the app report news about the genocide.
I think the perception that Tik Tok houses bad opinions or trends unique to that platform is wildly incorrect. There are the same crazy people on X or Facebook and they’re not being banned. Plenty of folks thought vine would decimate our attention span. Now I’m regularly watching 45 minutes from those same creators. I’ve never seen those trends mentioned, but I have learned about a lot of great small businesses and musicians.
Yeah seeing the perception of TikTok is wild to me. I’ve learned so much from it, yeah I’ve been on it for awhile so my algorithm is pretty good but still. Every platform has brain rot and some bad apples.
The difference is that tiktok makes viralibility more accessible and pushes harmful content more strongly. The few times I've used tiktok, no matter what kind of content I watch or how silly/harmless it is, it always starts pushing me into the anti-vax, alt-right, conspiracy theorist pipeline. Someone looking for content about healthy eating on another platform is far less likely to come across all this "buy my supplements everything else is poison" crap. People live streaming gacha-style scams is far less common on other platforms. There are far, far more "trends" that sexualize and endanger children on tiktok than anywhere else. No, this content isn't exclusive to tiktok (not even counting reels/shorts, since those only arose due to tiktok and tend to have reposted tiktoks)- but it is so much easier to find and continuously consume that content on tiktok than anywhere else.
Thank you for this! I was able to travel the world and experience other cultures in a bite-sized wholesome manner. It’s typically the fearmongers who have never used the platform who have no idea of how beneficial the app has been in fostering conversation and collaboration across cultures. Then again, lobbyists and lawmakers hate seeing money go into foreign pockets & that intel from alt sources is not regulated scares them 🤷 🦅
@christian_dg4948 Eh, while you can pretty easily hand tailor your experience on the platform since their algorithm is pretty good if you consciously manipulate it, the vast majority of popular content on the platform is mind-numbingly shitty low effort trash. It's got some diamonds in the rough, but having to sift through sewage-tier content to get some half decent stuff shown to me consistently just isn't worth it, and doesn't eliminate the garbage being shown to me outside of the platform. Vine died and the content culture never found a new home(which sucks cause it was primarily bangers), and I'm hoping the same happens to tiktok.
The whole issue the government has is that they aren’t making any money off of selling our data anymore, not that it is being collected. Otherwise they would pass data protection/privacy laws

The problem I have with tiktok is the content they prioritize pushing. Lots of negative mental health content gets pushed on people, even if they just created their account or are using a guest account. Meanwhile tiktok is actually banned in China and the app that they have bars any videos that glorify mental health issues.
i do hate how they can just lump 7 very different things to the same bill. also hate how they can just name a bill what ever. like the "kids online safety act" and it has nothing to do with kids online safety.
I cannot believe they named it that. They need to be targeting UA-cam and the awful content farms that periodically show up on the platform if they really care about kids.
Plenty of rich American guys salivating to own the means of "TikTok" production, so suddenly a bill passes forcing TikTok to sell to an approved investor? 😂
Genuinely hope it gets banned, the format in general should go. I know too many people that are just glued to that shit. My fiance wakes up and goes to bed with at least an hour of Tik Tok scrolling. We'll be watching a movie that she picked out, and she'll spend half of it on Tik Tok. That shit just consumes people worse than any social media has done before.

As much as I hate TikTok, I can't deny that this could set a fairly dangerous precedent for social media apps. Brainrot will always exist, and if TikTok gets banned, creators will just migrate to UA-cam shorts, similarly how Yahoo Answers shut down and caused the people posting there to move to Quora.
I notice UA-camrs are more logical than Tiktokers so I doubt we will let it brain rot hard because it would most likely get shut down by just pure common sense lol.
People getting concerned about data being collected haven't read a single one of the terms and conditions of facebook, twitter, microsoft or google, or even looked into where that goes.
When it comes to tik tok I'm less concerned about them stealing our data and more concerned about them clearly using different algorithms for different countries for the sake of political subversion in line with Mao's 100-year plan. Specifically, they promote things that are typically coercive to societies in Western nations and things that promote civilization building in China and their allied nations.
Charlie… tiktok isn’t the only thing killing peoples attention spans, UA-cam Shorts, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels.. they’re all the same 😭 edit: anyone says “well if tiktoks didn’t exist these wouldn’t either” UA-cam was guaranteed to have Short form content and also if Vine and Musically didn’t exist neither would Tiktok, your point is flawed, if you hate the “origin” of brain rot, blame Vine
Exactly! These sheeple need to open their brains and realize tiktok is only "bad" because they don't understand it and they only see the bad side of it. Like every single platform has a "bad side".
yea but all those things were inspired by tiktok and its popularity. not saying theyre not bad, but if it werent for tiktok, those features probably wouldntve been implemented.

Yep. And if TikTok divests to a US company, they'll just continue doing the same thing but with different goals. In fact I trust China more than I trust our own government and corporations at this point. China just wants to make our kids stupid so they can pull ahead. DC, Silicon Valley and the big CEOs want far worse.
I despise TikTok and will never use it. However, when the government starts banning things like TikTok when does it stop. They could use the same logic for UA-cam as well. Parents need to step up and be parents and make sure they know what their kids are doing online and stop making the government do it for them
This. The US government can coerce/extort/force American companies to take down things or "misinformation" they don't like. They can't do that with a foreign company. Tell me, which app have people been using to expose what's been going on in Gaza, which makes the US look very bad...?

I’ve been conflicted about this the whole time for the same reasons I hate TikTok with a passion, but I think society alone should be the judge of which platforms live and die rather than out of touch 60-80 year olds who post “how to open pdf” as a Facebook status
The impetus for this comes from 30-somethings with the Department of Homeland Security being uncomfortable with the idea of 170 million Americans being broadcast the truth according to the CCP. It's being forced to divest because the Chinese government has used it as a platform to disseminate propaganda and misinformation to American citizens.

For the love of god, stay that way. I've been trapped in this hell hole for years. T_T In all seriousness, TikTok isn't all that bad but it can be addicting, especially for someone like me who has ADHD as is
Ironic how much censorship is brought up in regards to banning the app, yet the app has the highest amount of word censorship I've ever seen, which is where creation of infamous terms like "un-alive" and "neurospicy" came into popular usage
This is like the biggest non-argument ever, and especially ironic, when you’re mentioning it on a platform that has also experienced multiple phases in which certain words were deemed not advertiser friendly. I vividly remember when some UA-camrs were using ‘game-ended’ and UA-camrs today still need to censor their curses. Tiktok is not the pioneer of restricting or punishing content that contains strong vocabulary, and to think so is really really funny.
@heyitskukii there's "advertiser-friendly"/"child-safe" censorship, and there's tiktok-level censorship where you can't say anything relating to being LGBTQIA+ or neurodivergent(beyond ADD/ADHD) because words like "autistic" and "lesbian" are censored and shadowbanned (e.g. why some people say "acoustic" or "tism/tistic" instead of autistic)
@@Ariaea11 the term acoustic was literally a meme in one of the trends on the app just because of how similar it sounds. In terms of shadowbanning, I've seen numerous neuro divergent and lesbian creators on the app, have you used it or are you judging from an outside perspective?
Glad to see Democrats and Republicans could agree on something for once. Now if they could put this much energy towards something that actually mattered that'd be great
“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me” - Pastor Martin Niemöller I personally don’t use TikTok, and am of a similar opinion as Charlie. At first I thought that this would be beneficial to the population as a whole, but then I thought of this poem. So long as this app isn’t a major danger to the U.S. population, restriction or a ban isn’t the right option.
A lot of Charlie's criticisms aren't right though. eg. Tiktok doesn't shorten attention spans. Human attention is naturally short but once you decide to you can focus on something for longer (except those of us with ADHD). What tiktok does is give people tons of short content that fits in that existing short attention span that don't require you to focus for longer which disincentives people from choosing longer content, because why would you? You get the same entertainment without the work. To be clear, I do consider this a bad thing, but it's just important to note that attention spans haven't changed, people have just been given reasons to not want to use theirs. A good example of the flaw of this criticism is the subway surfers stuff. Most videos that use Minecraft parkour/other gameplay that get popular are audio-only videos. It's just something to watch so you're not staring at a blank black screen. Imagine a UA-cam video that's just blank black with some guy talking. That would be miserable. Most of the content that you see spread around that people use as examples of to say that TikTok is causing brainrot are actually very unpopular. Content creators make good content, that takes off, and then several of thousands of bot accounts will select that video because of its view count and repost the video with subway surfer clips or whatever. These don't get nearly the popularity as the original video but there's countless of these bot accounts reuploading the same videos thousands of times. Most of them get a few hundreds or thousand of views compared to millions for the original videos. Those versions are the ones that get big on UA-cam Shorts, though, while the official channels of those content creators are usually used for longer form content and so you never see the original version of those videos, making it seem like everything that comes out of TikTok uses Minecraft or Subway Surfers. All in all, it does seem like the strategy of putting games with other content does help that content get bigger than it would, hence why the bot accounts keep using that strategy to help their reposts gain tiny bits of traction, but the content that blows up on the app is typically content that was made for the sake of the content, even if some of that content is stupid, and creators that care about their content don't use the strategy. Part of the reason this is even an issue, though, is because TikTok's algorithm is actually way more fair to small creators than any other platform. It's very, very common to get someone on your FYP that has around 10 likes an no comments on their videos because they haven't blown up, yet they still show up on your FYP. Those bot accounts get a lot of views off what they do because TikTok is willing to show videos from smaller creators and the strategies those bot accounts use is just enough to take advantage of that.
I genuinely want it gone. I'm not lying when I say Tiktok is full of P DO PILES. I've been trolling with some weirdos who want to excuse grooming with their age of consent shenanigans and how it used to be norm back in the days, and I responded like "well surprise surprise, they're still kids 💀" They don't take that fact very well
The fact that this ban only applies to TikTok and yet Wish, AliExpress, Shein and Temu are still allowed who are doing the same thing with our data says to me that there’s a different underlying reason that the government is banning it. It’s not just China getting our data, it’s something else. As someone who stays far away from TikTok, I have no way of knowing what that reason really is, but I agree that it’s definitely an attack on personal freedom.
Exactly. Not to mention, even if we banned all those Chinese sites, American companies sell our data to grey market data brokers and China could easily get it from them. No, this is 100% a cash grab for the big American social media magnates and attack on free speech, particularly the already disenfranchised younger generations
It doesn't matter. The government banned lawn darts, Four Loko, Juul and a million other things too. It's still a commerce issue and not a speech issue.
I think it's important to note that this bill is ONLY a ban if TikTok does not domesticize in the US. The corporation that operates TikTok, called ByteDance, is extremely shady with their connections directly with the Chinese government as well as their proposal that TikTok is / should be regarded as "an app for children without their parents present." Edit: TikTok is also a Chinese National Asset.
They shouldn't have allowed TikTok in the US in the first place. China doesn't allow American social media companies to operate in China, so it's only fair not to allow their social media companies to operate here.
Honestly, I would be happy about this if I didn’t know how many small businesses were kickstarted by TikTok. My own family members have been able to get traction on their business because of TikTok and let’s be real Instagram is just not good for that.
Exactly, I don’t think congress understands how vital something like TikTok is to small businesses. I’ve actually found several great businesses in my state thanks to it. I’ve even bought books from several authors. It’s just sad that US companies fail to do something better than a foreign app, which should be the other way around.
@@Dirty-Leprechaun but the thing is its harder on other platforms to get traction, Instagram is horrible for that, and X is horrible as well. There are no other apps that actually put your work out there. I'm a small business and Instagram has gotten me no traction while TikTok has helped me get some people interested.
If the app is such a security risk that government officials can’t even have it installed on any device, I feel like that speaks volumes about why it’s getting banned.
Just so people know in the United States: “Section 310(b) of the Communications Act restricts who can hold a broadcast license, and prohibits foreign-organized corporations from doing so” While this doesn’t directly apply to tiktok as it’s not fully the same concept, it’s very similar. We are allowing a foreign media to control what we see.
Chinese have more freedom of speech than americans. In China you cant critsiz: Chinese government. If you do you get a fair trail and pay the fine/go to jail. In the US you cant criticize: the goverment, women, trannies, gay ppl, black ppl, brown ppl, the jews, elections, s*x education for children, fbi, war in the middle east, ukraine and the list go on. If you do you have no right for a fair trail, you get doxed by media, and lose job.
also the way TikTok said it made it sound only Americans use the app like oh if you shut us down billions of americans will lose their voice like why are they all of a sudden pretending America is the only country? if they leave it open for other countries we have VPNs now, Americans can easily just you know switch to EU and enter tiktok
I used to think the same, and in years past I was opposed to a ban on TikTok for similar reasons as those stated here. However, I've come to realize just how awful TikTok is, so while there is real danger in doing so, I think banning TikTok is necessary. Personally, I hope they don't sell and the platform dies entirely!

I never actually thought this ban would go through tbh. Granted some of the previous bans were for government devices, but those should be expected. The banning of TikTok as a whole for everyone would’ve never been something I actually expected.
2 claims that are irrelevant about people who oppose the ban 1. “It is taking away freedom of speech.” They have 9 months to sell it, they didn’t say they would ban it, they are giving them an opportunity to give it to someone else. 2. “It hurts small businesses.” It is surprisingly easy to relocate your business to a different site like Instagram. And if your business was successful on tik tok, they should have enough money to buy real commercials. But if they didn’t get real successful, then just start from scratch atp They are not banning it, they are giving them a chance to sell it or they face natural consequences Feel free to debate with me, I’d like to hear your insight

@@gapsule2326 It's 100% because of Israel. They're upset that young people get news from Tik Tok that exposed all of the war crimes they are currently Committing. This is the only reason.
I never thought I'd be on the side of defending the ban of tiktok. It's a very true point that it's a slippery slope - like tiktok or not, it's definitely scary to think the government can just decide what we're able to do with our own devices or time. I hate the brain rot, but I too think that freedom to decide is important.
I am a teacher and while I have seen the detrimental impact TikTok has had on students, I see this as primarily a parenting issue where kids have unregulated access to the internet. Before TikTok, when I was in middle school and high school, kids were still recording themselves doing dangerous things online (like setting themselves on fire and snorting things). Kids just posted it to other sites or shared it through texts instead. Additionally, our data is constantly being used and sold through U.S. companies as well, and the amount of misinformation that is shared on other social media sites is comparable. Unfortunately, while TikTok is full of garbage, it also gives users the ability to share first-hand experiences that other platforms don't allow (like first-hand accounts of things happening in Gaza right now), and I think that's the real reason behind the ban. There has been a lot of social unrest as average people become more connected and find power in bettering their community by opposing current systems of power. If our government actually cared about our data, they would regulate other social media sites more. If they cared about children, they wouldn't be dissolving public schools and promoting unregulated access to firearms. If they cared about mental health, they would make therapy more readily available. I seriously doubt this ban is due to user data concerns.

And even in the time of peace , why do you think Chinese would collect data about AMERICAN citizens ? Knowing that China is the closest ally to Russia , and i'm an immigrant from Russia btw , and let me tell you - Russia deems the US as a NUMBER ONE enemy of theirs . And so does China ! Exactly 💯
I don't like tiktok, but I think Facebook has a lot of "brain rot" if not more than tiktok

I personally don’t use TikTok, and am of a similar opinion as Charlie.
That other comment turned out massive and I'm very sorry. XD
Just say that you don’t understand common sense or our policies

They don't take that fact very well
The fact that this ban only applies to TikTok and yet Wish, AliExpress, Shein and Temu are still allowed who are doing the same thing with our data says to me that there’s a different underlying reason that the government is banning it. It’s not just China getting our data, it’s something else.

“Section 310(b) of the Communications Act restricts who can hold a broadcast license, and prohibits foreign-organized corporations from doing so”
While this doesn’t directly apply to tiktok as it’s not fully the same concept, it’s very similar. We are allowing a foreign media to control what we see.

Chinese company talking about how Americans are losing their voice. What a wild time to be alive.
so true lol
This hurts even more for me
It's stationed in Singapore and predominantly ran by Singaporeans. China doesn't even allow tiktok on the mainland.
I don't mind if Tic Tok gets banned
I'm one of the people in my age group that never got into tiktok, even an old coworker of mine was suprised I never really used tiktok and said he would spend up to 8 HOURS straight on it, but i couldn't say anything as I'm literally on my phone/videogames as much lol
Bruh thank god I only watch on IG Reels 😇
True, all that time I'm usually reading or playing games with friends.
I really dislike short form content
I think gaming and watching TV shows are a bit hit different to tiktok. Shows and games at least engage the brain while I think tiktok has the effect of putting people on auto pilot which isn't great.
I've never liked tiktok, and have never installed it lmao
I tried it out, quit right after a few scrolls
Like most things, the problem isn't the thing in question, it's the people using it.
Fun fact: In the time it takes to watch this video (without pausing), a TikTok kid will have watched through around 20-25 short videos
the fact that the us government worked this fast to ban tiktok but not any of the huge glaring issues in our society is a complete joke.
This fast? Trump called for banning TikTok a long time ago
It has been years.
Solving complex issues takes time. Banning Tiktok, by comparison, is insanely easy.
Well, ya know. Its a little bit of national security. Just a wee. No complaints here though. Its brain rot anyway

They ban Tik tok but not twitter instagram temu discord or UA-cam shorts 🤦♂️
I think a big part of the issue is that through Tik Tok people can get direct testimonies from people; like the people in gaza, the Congo or the student protesters. They use mainly tik tok to spread awareness and seems to be the most friendly app algorithm wise for them. Without Tik Tok they wouldn't get the attention they deserve. Regulations should absolutely happen but the brainrot I see on UA-cam shorts compared to Tik Tok is like nightmarish, sending kids to youtube shorts seems like absolute hell. Still, the app needs to change but so does UA-cam and Instagram and specially Facebook and X

As much as I dislike tiktok, I think that this sets a really bad precedent. Outright banning the platform entirely shows that the U.S. government is not afraid of and is entirely capable of censoring information they don’t like.
All that being said, I sure won’t be crying over TikToks death.

It's because they are banning it so people cannot get access to news about the genocide against Palestinians. That's why you are all of a sudden seeing headlines; it's because in recent months people on TikTok have been making videos on what is actually happening over there.

I never actually thought this ban would go through tbh. Granted some of the previous bans were for government devices, but those should be expected. The banning of TikTok as a whole for everyone would’ve never been something I actually expected.
2 claims that are irrelevant about people who oppose the ban
But if they didn’t get real successful, then just start from scratch atp
They are not banning it, they are giving them a chance to sell it or they face natural consequences
Feel free to debate with me, I’d like to hear your insight
The worst thing about the tiktok ban is the inevitable influx of tiktokers on youtube

It's because of ukraine getting demolished by russia
It's cuz of that damn phone you always on
@@gapsule2326 It's 100% because of Israel. They're upset that young people get news from Tik Tok that exposed all of the war crimes they are currently Committing. This is the only reason.
Personally I think people have been stealing cars before TikTok
No way
I never thought I'd be on the side of defending the ban of tiktok.
Yes we know Republicans generally don't care about that helping kids or Americans. But that doesn't mean this isn't a great thing!!
Also don't lie and say tiktok isn't influencing kids to destroy bathrooms or steal Kias. Don't be a lair
it's probably because they don't want our biggest adversary in economics having something more successful than anything owned by the us

Yeah ? And how is your comment something to put up AGAINST that quote ? I would understand the point of your comment like 10 years ago , but if you haven't noticed Russia started a war in Ukraine and if Russia had a way to spy on American citizens , i dont think you or any other person in the country would be happy ! And you may ask - "What does Russia have to do with anything ? Tiktok is Chinese !" well maybe the fact that China is literally planning to attack Taiwan and maybe you would be aware of that information if you weren't getting your news from Tiktok , which bans any mention of Taiwan because Chinese government doesn't approve of it .
So when your enemy collects your data , believe me , its really NOT a good thing , and its insane that i even have to explain this to you...

Technically we’re always living in a moment of history.
It's about freedom of information. Tik Tok is like hijacking the world establishment of American operating systems.
Not much more is needed than the current user-base to introduce their own device and circumvent everrything.
Expecting a total boycot of China electronics and software this year.
This is far from anything new. This is just yet another tech company that will be replaced by another.
This isn’t going to take away TikTok it’s going to make China sell the app to US stakeholders.
It’s pretty plain that China controls the app either partially or fully and amplifies discourse that makes US citizens more divided than ever on purpose and pushes destructive trends. If US stakeholders get it, it will likely change and be more like how reels is, which is just regular amounts of divisive and stupid and keeps them accountable for the ways app affects us whereas we can’t really sue or punish a Chinese company operating in China.
